Under-fire West Ham boss Moyes REJECTED chance to sign Man City striker and World Cup winner Alvarez from River Plate

UNDER-FIRE West Ham boss David Moyes TURNED DOWN Julian Alvarez while he was at River Plate due to Michail Antonio’s red-hot form.Moyes revealed he had the chance to sign Manchester City striker Alvarez before he joined the Sky Blues a year ago.

Alvarez was brought to the Scotsman’s attention by a scout and Moyes has admitted he liked what he saw.
But Antonio’s ruthless streak in front of goal saw Moyes pass up on the opportunity to sign Alvarez – a fatal mistake that could’ve changed the trajectory of his West Ham tenure.
Antonio led the line for the Hammers on his own for the best part of 18 months but Moyes’ men gassed out in 2022, limping over the finishing line in seventh, as well as losing a Europa League semi-final to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Moyes told the Diary of a CEO podcast: “I think it’s the ones I’ve missed, the ones where you say ‘Nah, I don’t think he’s quite good enough.’ I’ve had hundreds of them.
    Most read in Football
“Just recently, because we’ve been talking about it, Alvarez who has just played for Argentina in the World Cup, I bought in a new scout who says ‘Look, you should go for Alvarez at River Plate’.
“I watched him and I thought he was a very good technician and done so many good things as a centre forward but I thought [he’s] maybe not quite the one we want, we had Micky Antonio who had been doing very well and I thought I don’t know.
“You see sometimes the players change in six months but I have to say there are other players like that who you don’t take and don’t go on to be a real success, but that one at the moment is just one where probably because it was only a year ago where I decided ‘Nah, he’s not one I’m going to take’.”
Fast forward a year and Alvarez is a World Cup winner, starring alongside Lionel Messi in Qatar last November-December.

Alvarez netted four goals at the winter tournament, helping the South American country claim their third-ever world crown.
The 22-year-old is also at Premier League title-chasing City, where he effectively plays back-up to star man Erling Halaand.
And despite playing limited minutes, Alvarez has eight goals across all competitions so far this season.

West Ham, meanwhile, sit in the relegation zone on 15 points from 19 games.
The East London club’s last league win came in October against Bournemouth.
And David Moyes is on thin ice as he struggles to change his team’s fortunes.
It is believed the under-fire Hammers boss is now operating on a match-by-match basis and potential replacements are NOW being looked at.

Newcastle looking to offload Ryan Fraser and Karl Darlow this month as Eddie Howe looks to get wages off books

Despite the wealth of the club’s Saudi owners, the club is wary of the top-flight’s Financial Fair Play rules and will not be splashing the cash this month.
However, Howe wants to bring in a defensive midfielder before the end of the transfer window to bolster their push for Champions League football.
He already has 27 senior players at Newcastle and is only able to register 25 of those for the second half of the campaign.
Therefore in order to ease the wage bill and make room for a new addition they realise there must be outgoings.
    READ MORE TRANSFER NEWS
The Athletic are reporting that Scottish international winger Ryan Fraser, 28, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow, 32, are the two they are hoping to offload.
Fraser is allegedly viewed as Newcastle’s “most sellable asset” and he asked to leave during the summer.
Both Southampton and Bournemouth were keen on him but the failure to sign a replacement wideman scuppered his hopes of departing.
Fraser has only started three top-flight matches this term, with his last outing coming in October.

Howe is now reportedly “reluctant to risk him” for the remainder of this month in case he picks up an injury that jeopardises the prospect of a sale.
It also adds that even though they would prefer a permanent transfer, they would also consider a loan deal.
Meanwhile, Darlow is now one of five senior goalies on the books at St. James’ Park after Martin Dubravka returned from his loan at Manchester United and is free to leave too. More

“I have never made it a secret that my dream is to win European trophies. This means that players like Mudryk should be invited to our club, to our Ukrainian championship, and we should win European trophies with such players, rather than root for them, even when they play in the world’s top clubs.
“Unfortunately, it is impossible now, as Ukraine is fighting the horrendous and unjust war waged against us by the Russian Federation. But I am confident that we will win.
“And we will play a friendly against Chelsea at Donbass Arena in a Ukrainian Donetsk.”
Akhmetov added: “That is why I have made a decision to launch the Heart of Azovstal, a project designed to help Mariupol defenders and the families of fallen soldiers. Their acts of bravery are unparalleled in the modern history.
“I am allocating $25 million [£20.5m] today to help our soldiers, defenders, and their families. The money will be used to cover different needs — from providing medical and prosthetic treatment and psychological support to meeting specific requests.
“To ensure transparency, the project will have a professional independent team that will be in touch with the Azovstal defenders, their families, care providers, and volunteers.”
After signing on the dotted line, Mudryk said: “I’m so happy to sign for Chelsea.
“This is a huge club, in a fantastic league and it is a very attractive project for me at this stage of my career.
“I’m excited to meet my new team-mates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff.”
Mudryk held a Ukrainian flag as he was officially unveiled on the pitch on Sunday – less than a year since Russian Roman Abramovich’s reign in charge ended after his country’s invasion of their neighbours in February 2022.
