Chelsea have identified Gusto, 19, as the successor to iconic right-back Cesar Azpilicueta.
Todd Boehly has already signed six players this month in a bid to back under-fire Graham Potter.
But the American chief wants more incomings before a new Uefa rule banning long-term contracts kicks in.
And Gusto is top of the list for Chelsea along with a new central midfielder.

The teenager is rated as one of the brightest young talents in French football, prompting the Blues to launch an £18m bid yesterday.
The offer was turned down by Lyon, who are desperate to keep Gusto despite additional interest from Man United.
However, that could prove hard as Foot Mercato claims Gusto is desperate to join Chelsea regardless of United’s presence.
Potter is equally keen to sign Gusto as competition for injury-prone star Reece James.

And it’s reckoned Chelsea are now preparing a new bid for the young defender worth between £27m and £35m.
Should he move to Stamford Bridge, Gusto would become the latest French star to be snapped up by Chelsea.
The Blues currently boast three Les Bleus aces in N’Golo Kante, Wesley Fofana and new centre-back Benoit Badiashile.
Before them, attackers like Olivier Giroud, Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda lit up west London.
And there have been further fan favourites in Claude Makelele, Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf.
But there have also been several French flops at the Bridge, including Tiemoue Bakayoko, Loic Remy and Lassana Diarra.
Others like William Gallas and Kurt Zouma evoked mixed feelings when they respectively joined rivals Arsenal and West Ham.
And Chelsea fans will be hoping Gusto is nothing but a sure-fire hit should he make the switch. More

TalkSport claims the Red Devils must sell before they can invest heavily in new recruits due to Financial Fair Player rules.
United have no intention of shaking up their squad this month, with just a week remaining in the window.
But Ten Hag has made it clear he intends to sweep away the dead wood to bring in some of his own signings this summer, with Chelsea target Malo Gusto on his list.
And one player in the firing line is axed captain Maguire.

The centre-back has started just four Premier League games this season, and is now fifth-choice in his position after Luke Shaw’s switch from the left.
West Ham are known to be keen after failing with a loan bid for Maguire last week.
And his exit would open the door for Ten Hag to appoint a new skipper.
As for McTominay, he too finds himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are hoping to take the Scot off United’s hands.
But after starting in Sunday’s narrow 3-2 defeat at Arsenal, McTominay could yet convince Ten Hag he still has a future at the club.
Indeed, Ten Hag hailed the anchorman ahead of the game, hinting the ace still has a chance of staying.
United’s boss said: “Scott can do the job, he’s a great player for our squad. He’s a great player for this team and I think he’s also making a good development.” More

Winger Leandro Trossard joined Arsenal in a £27million deal from Brighton and made his debut during the 3-2 win over Manchester United on Sunday evening.
Mikel Arteta’s team then confirmed that they had bought Poland international defender Jakub Kiwior from Spezia for £21m last night.

Now transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Arsenal are plotting a swoop on Brighton again.
However, they face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool for Ecuadorian midfield star Caicedo, who has recently employed a new agent.

Romano tweeted: “Official. Moises Caicedo has picked Futbol Division as new agents — it’s now confirmed by agency statement.
“One to watch in the final days of Jan window — Brighton want to keep him but Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are well informed on Moises situation.”
The 21-year-old Ecuadorian has taken the Premier League by storm since stepping into the Brighton set-up initially under now-Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
Under current manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is desperate to keep the ace, Caicedo’s development has continued at a rapid pace, with Brighton continuing to march up the table.

Brighton have become serial recruiters of top talent which is then flipped for a huge profit margin, as evidenced by sales such as Marc Cucurella, Ben White and most recently Trossard.
Trossard arrived at the Amex Stadium in 2019 for £18m, but is now an Arsenal player having been sold for £27m.
The respective fees they got for Cucurella and White saw Brighton receive more money than what it cost them to build their stadium.
And Caicedo is set to be the next name on that list of profitable acquisitions by the club after he cost them just £5m. More

The former Chelsea boss replaced Rafa Benitez last January but has failed to stop the rot.
And the disappointing 2-0 defeat to relegation rivals West Ham on Saturday proved to be the last straw.
Former Burnley boss Sean Dyche and ex-Leeds gaffer Marcelo Bielsa are the two favourites to succeed the Chelsea legend.
Everton legend Wayne Rooney and former chief David Moyes, currently at West Ham, are also in the running.

However, Marca are claiming that the Spaniard Marcelino is on the shortlist of managers on the shortlist too and has been contacted by the club.
The 57-year-old has enjoyed spells in charge of a number of LaLiga clubs.
He led Villarreal to three successive European finishes during his three years at the helm until 2016.
He then went on to Valencia, where he secured the Copa del Rey back in 2019.

Marcelino then had a short stint in charge of Bilbao in the 2020/21 campaign, losing the Spanish cup final, before departing at the end of the season.
He has not managed since, but now this report claims that he could be heading to Merseyside for his first taste of the Premier League.
Defeat at the London Stadium has left the Merseysiders with a record of just one win in their last 12 league matches.
Everton registered a mere 15 points out of a possible 60 this season.
The Toffees face the daunting prospect of welcoming league leaders Arsenal to Goodison a fortnight on Saturday.

And the following week, they’ll travel across Stanley Park to face bitter rivals Liverpool in what will no doubt be another fiery affair.
Paul Tait and Leighton Baines will take training until a new manager is found. More

Juventus were slapped with a 15-point deduction last week after being accused of inflating transfer fees in dealings with other Italian clubs over three seasons to create millions of pounds in “capital gains” for tax purposes.
According to Italian outlet Il Mattino, authorities now want to take a closer look at Napoli’s dealings.
Under the microscope will be their signing of Osimhen, although the Naples prosecutor will require six months to complete their probe.
In particular, investigators will consider the potential falsification of financial documents.

In Juventus’ case, prosecutors were able to use leaked phone conversations and email exchanges as evidence.
This is not expected to be the case for other clubs.
Osimhen, 24, has performed well since joining Napoli.
His performances on the pitch have attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United.

Chelsea have offered the rising star a contract longer than five years and haven’t been shy with splashing the cash under owner Todd Boehly.
Boehly has signed off on nearly £400million pounds worth of transfers since buying the club with £151m of that coming in this month alone.
However, RMC Sport report that Man Utd are hoping to hijack Chelsea’s move for Gusto and have told the right-back to “not to rush” a decision.
It is not clear whether United would make a late January move or hope that Gusto holds off on a mid-season switch in order to swoop in the summer.

The latter could be more likely if the words of director of football John Murtough are to be believed.
Murtough said at a fans’ forum in December: “While we will be exploring options, I don’t expect it to be a busy January window.
“January is a difficult time to find players that teams are willing to let go.
“It’s no secret that we’re looking for a new centre-forward.

“We’ll see what’s possible in January but we only want to bring in players who are good enough, and who will make the squad stronger.
“We’re not going to sign players for the sake of making signings.
“You also need to remember that we invested over £200million in the squad last summer and, as a club, we need to remain financially disciplined and compliant with FFP rules.
“As always, the main focus remains on the summer window, and we’re already well under way with our planning for next summer.”
United did follow through on their pursuit of a new striker following the bitter departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Old Trafford club made a cost-effective signing by loaning Burnley striker Wout Weghorst. More
