Chelsea give Benfica transfer ultimatum over Enzo Fernandez as they draw up two offers including player swap deal

CHELSEA have reportedly handed Benfica a transfer ultimatum over Enzo Fernandez – despite the Blues trying to sign the midfielder. The Stamford Bridge club failed in their pursuit of the 22-year-old World Cup winner earlier in the January window.

Benfica have been strong in their stance, demanding the Premier League side meet the £106million release clause if they want Fernandez.
However, according to TyC Sports, Chelsea have drawn up two different offers in an attempt to convince the Portuguese giants to sell.
The first suggestion would see the Blues offer £88m up front with Benfica then getting to choose a player to receive as part of the deal, subject to approval from West London.
The other offer would see Chelsea agree to pay the full £106m – but only in a series of instalments.

The report adds that Fernandez will not force through a transfer and Benfica are still determined to hold out for the full £106m.
The Athletic add that super-agent Jorge Mendes is continuing to negotiate between the two clubs and has moved the discussions forward in recent days.

Chelsea are aware plenty of clubs are likely to go in for Fernandez in the summer so want to pip their rivals to the Argentine holding midfielder.
But should Todd Boehly manage to get a deal done before tomorrow’s transfer deadline, that would take his spending beyond £300m including add-ons and loan fees.

The 21-year-old joined high-flying Newcastle despite an on-field bust up with a number of Toon stars earlier this season.
Gordon was involved in a heated exchange with Trippier during Everton’s 1-0 loss at St. James’ Park in October.
The row was sparked by Gordon going down softly in the penalty area under a Dan Burn challenge, which left Trippier unimpressed.
He also had an altercation with Nick Pope and Fabian Schar.

But it doesn’t look as though Gordon will be in for an awkward reunion with Eddie Howe’s stars.
Instead, Magpies striker Wilson was quick to hilariously troll Gordon after his move.

Full-back Malo Gusto, 19, became the latest addition to Graham Potter’s squad this weekend after penning a deal that runs until 2030 following a £31m move from Lyon.
We reported earlier in the week how Boehly is ready to get his chequebook out again to try and secure 21-year-old midfielder Fernandez.
A Chelsea bid worth £112m – £6m more than his £105m release clause – was turned down this month as it was structured to be paid in three £37.3m yearly instalments.
That led many to believe that they had given up on their pursuit of the South American, at least until the summer.

But The Telegraph have now reported that the Stamford Bridge side have started negotiations again with Benfica as they are determined to land the Argentina World Cup winner before the deadline closes at 11pm on January 31.
And transfer guru Fabrizio Romano echoed those claims as he offered his own update on the situation.
He tweeted: “Chelsea are back in direct talks with Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.
“They want the player at all costs — Chelsea would be prepared to pay €120m fee.”

However, he added: “Benfica president Rui Costa has still no intention to accept — but Chelsea will insist to get the deal done now.”
Benfica have already issued a statement regarding Fernandez, who appears desperate to move to Stamford Bridge, stating he would not be old.
Fernandez only arrived at Benfica from River Plate last summer and is under contract until 2027.
He played the full game as they secured a 2-0 win at Pacos Ferreira on Thursday. More

Caicedo put in a transfer request to force the switch and missed Sunday’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Liverpool, having been told to stay at home until after the window closes.
But his manager’s comments following that fourth-round victory hinted a deal could still be done, with the Gunners ready to bid again.
And while De Zerbi does not want the midfielder to leave, the Albion boss will want reinforcements if he does, having sold Leandro Trossard to Arsenal earlier this month.
De Zerbi said: “Caicedo is a very, very good guy.

“I can understand him because when you are 21, and you receive the request of a big, big team that are playing in Europe, I can understand.

“I think we need some players in some positions.

“We lost Trossard, if we lose also Caicedo it can be a problem for us. If we want to fight for Europe, or the maximum on the table.
“If we want to stay like this (at our current level), we can. But I don’t like.”
Caicedo posted an open letter to the club on Instagram late on Friday night pleading for them to grant his move.
The Ecuadorian wrote: “I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest and help the club continue to be successful.
“The fans will always be in my heart so I hope they understand why I want to take this magnificent opportunity.”
His comments were put to De Zerbi who intimated that he felt the player’s actions had been influenced by his representatives.
The Italian said: “I was surprised (by Caicedo’s social media post.
“But I can understand where it started. I don’t know if you understand, but Moises is a good guy.”
Albion owner Bloom has a history of being a tough negotiator, having exacted fees of £50m from Arsenal for Ben White and £62m from Chelsea for Marc Cucurella.
De Zerbi feels if Caicedo stays, and Brighton add to the squad ahead of tomorrow’s deadline, then Europe is a possibility for his sixth-placed side.

The ex-Shakhtar Donetsk chief added: “I think if we don’t lose Caicedo, we are ready to fight.
“I’m not angry (scared) to say my team can fight for Europe. The most important is the way, the improvement. In transfer market window, always you have the possibility to improve.” More
