Newcastle join transfer chase for Diaby with Arsenal ‘struggling to compete’ with Magpies for £62m-rated Leverkusen star

NEWCASTLE have reportedly joined the race for Bayer Leverkusen star Moussa Diaby and look set to challenge Arsenal with their financial muscle. The Magpies’ Saudi takeover at the end of 2021 means they can now compete at the top end of the market, which is far cry from the tight-fisted days under former owner Mike Ashley.

But the club have been fairly restrained with their spending so far as they look to break the Premier League’s established order.
On the pitch the north-east club have made a genuine assault on the top four places this season.
And now, in the boardroom, the club are also looking to show their Prem rivals what they are capable of.
90min report that Newcastle are looking to move in on long-term Arsenal target Diaby.

The winger has been linked with a summer move to the Emirates after another impressive season in Germany.
But Newcastle are set to get involved in the transfer hunt as they look to add some cutting edge to their goal-shy attack.
They are reportedly set to spend this summer with £62m-rated Diaby among the targets.
The Toon are also reportedly interested in the 23-year-old’s team-mate Mitchel Bakker, the Leverkusen left-back.

Arsenal are unlikely to be able to compete financially with Newcastle and sporting director Edu has consistently looked for value in the transfer market and tried to avoid bidding wars.
In January the Gunners had to watch their long-term target Mykhailo Mudryk depart for Chelsea as it became clear the Blues had more financial heft on their side.
But the London side quickly pivoted and found themselves landing a great deal to sign Leandro Trossard, who has been a hit so far.
While money could be a disadvantage in the Diaby chase, Arsenal can offer the Frenchman guaranteed Champions League football next season.
Newcastle’s wobbly form over the last few weeks makes their position at Europe’s top table less certain. More

But Palace will be on the hunt for a new head coach in the summer after the ex-England manager attempts to steady the ship at Selhurst Park.
Vieira’s sacking – which came after a 12-game winless run – meant Palace sought a quick solution and Hodgson, 75, was readily available as he was enjoying semi-retirement.
But according to The Mail, a long-term appointment is being considered in the form of Nottingham Forest manager Cooper.
Palace are aware he will not be available until the end of the season as he attempts to keep The Tricky Trees from relegation.

But the Eagles are hoping talks can begin in the summer assuming Hodgson prevents them from dropping out of the Premier League.
They sit three points above the relegation zone in 12th place, one point ahead of Cooper’s Forest.
Tottenham have also been linked with Cooper as a replacement for Antonio Conte.
Conte, 53, is expected to be sacked this week after a scathing rant about his players and club.

But the former Arsenal star’s return to London has quickly developed into a nightmare.
He has fallen well out of favour since Thomas Tuchel was sacked days after his arrival and has since only managed 123 minutes of football without starting a single game this year.
The Gabon international was also axed from Graham Potter’s Champions League squad after Chelsea’s huge January spending spree.
And all of this has led to Spanish publication SPORT claiming that “everything indicates that he could be released this summer” by the Blues.

Aubameyang is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2024 and currently earns £160,000-a-week.
We reported yesterday how Barcelona are keen on bringing him back.
That was after Aubameyang was pictured celebrating with his former team-mates in the dressing room after their 2-1 triumph over Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico.
The forward still has an excellent relationship with the Blaugrana stars, especially Ousmane Dembele with whom he played at Borussia Dortmund.

Man Utd target Victor Osimhen at centre of investigation into Napoli after joining in bizarre swap transfer

NAPLES hosts its first senior Italy international for ten years when England visit for a Euro 2024 qualifier on Thursday. But Estadio Diego Armando Maradona’s atmosphere will be nothing compared to a few weeks’ time if Napoli win a first Serie A title since 1990.

But their acquisition of the Nigeria international is set to be investigatedCredit: REX
Napoli are 19 points clear but there are nerves off the pitch over star Victor Osimhen .
It is no surprise that both Chelsea and Manchester United want to sign the Nigerian, 24, who has 25 goals this term.
There is concern the move which brought Osimhen from Lille in a £70.1million deal in 2020 could give the club a major problem.
Juventus suffered a 15-point penalty for false accounting to inflate player transfer values and falsify FFP.

It looks as though Napoli may have done something similar. The Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office has asked for a six-month extension to an investigation into the transfer and will make a decision in the summer.
And it is because £17.5m of that Osimhen transfer was made up of four players who went the other way to Lille.
These were keeper Orestis Karnezis and three youth-team players, Luigi Liguori, Claudio Manzi and Ciro Palmieri.
None of those four players, including Karnezis, who was 35 at the time, ever played for Lille.

Some of them have never been to the French city as their deals were soon cancelled and the younger players are in non-league.
It seems obvious that the actual deal was about Osimhen and a way of spending money on young players which are not included in FFP rules.
Napoli could be in trouble. But by the time they are dealt with, Osimhen may be in the Premier League.
The Nigerian recently aid of his future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium: “When you are doing so well, top clubs around the world are watching, mostly in the top five leagues.
“And to be able to be attract interest from these top clubs shows that I am doing great and it gives me the motivation to do even more for myself and my team.
“But I am focused on Napoli right now and they have the final say. I just want to help my team to win matches and win trophies.
“At the end of the season, we will see what is going to happen, but that is not up to me. It is for the club to decide.”

Barcelona LOSE appeal to register wonderkid Gavi as first-team player putting Man Utd and Liverpool on transfer alert

BARCELONA’S second attempt to register wonderkid Gavi as a first-team player has been REJECTED in court. The Nou Camp giants had their original effort turned down by LaLiga back in January as the club were also banned from adding to their squad.

However, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that the club’s appeal against overturning the first-team registration of Gavi has been rejected.
Barcelona registered Gavi as a first-team player on January 31 after obtaining a precautionary measure from the court.
However, LaLiga filed an appeal against the same as they cited the fact that Xavi’s side had missed the deadline.
The court allegedly ruled in favour of the Spanish league earlier this month but no concrete verdict was reached as Gavi was allowed to continue as a first-team member.

But this fresh update states the financially troubled club appealed against the ruling last Wednesday but had their appeal rejected by the 10th Commercial Court of Barcelona.
That means that Gavi, who is a full Spanish international, will no longer be counted as a first-team member and must revert back to his youth contract until the end of the season.
And in what could be a huge boost for Manchester United, the attacker will also be deregistered for the next season as Barcelona have exceeded their salary limit.
As we reported previously, the Nou Camp club had thought the departures of Memphis Depay and Gerard Pique would allow them to register Gavi.

Gavi has been a key player for Barcelona this season
Barca have a negative balance, which is largely due to their Champions League exit in the group stages, and so LaLiga did not validate Gavi’s extension.
Barca will now have to significantly reduce their wage bill in summer, or find new sponsorships to register contracts.
We revealed how they could be set to unload some of their biggest stars as the troubled club look to raise £178m.
The Spanish giants face a summer of no incoming signings after wild spending left the club struggling to reign in their costs.
Player sales appear the most likely way to get the situation under control and Premier League clubs are among those who could be circling.
United and Liverpool have been joined by Bayern Munich in the race to sign Gavi.

But he is not the only one that could be going out the exit door.
Ex-Leeds star Raphinha, who only arrived at the Nou Camp a year ago, and fellow United target Frenkie de Jong are among 10 players who could also be sold to free up funds. More
