‘It’s very worrying’ – Carragher tells Alexander-Arnold to ‘have a long think’ and urges Liverpool to buy new right-back

JAMIE CARRAGHER insists Liverpool need to buy a new right-back to give Trent Alexander-Arnold “serious competition” as his “defending is not good enough”.The defender, 24, was criticised again as the Reds were dumped out of the Champions League with 6-2 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold played a key role in Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning side and has also lifted the Champions league, FA Cup and League Cup.
His set-piece and crossing abilities have won him plenty of plaudits, but his defensive frailties have been exposed numerous times in what has been a disappointing campaign for both him and Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold has played regularly for the past five years, but Anfield legend Jamie Carragher has urged Klopp to go out and buy him “help” this summer.
He told CBS Sports: “It’s very, very worrying. Not just for Liverpool as a team, but for him.

“And what I mean by that is, this can’t continue, what’s happened this season and the amount of times he’s been lacking defensively.
“The problem they’ve got in that position is, they’ve never had real competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. And one of the reasons for that is because he’s been so good.
“You’re then thinking ‘Who do you buy?’. How much do you spend for someone who’s not really going to play every week?
“I think Liverpool are at the point now where they have got to go buy a right-back.

“It’s Jurgen Klopp’s decision how good that right-back is, how much he costs, but that lad needs serious competition.
“He’s been playing now at the top level every season, week in week out with no rest.
“He’s won everything, he’s been fantastic and he’s done everything I could ever dream of.

“I’m so proud of him, a local lad coming through the ranks. But he needs help.
“At the end of this season, he needs to have a long think about where he is as a right-back.”
Alexander-Arnold was forced to do plenty of defending in Madrid
Carragher added: “I’ve always defended him because he plays for one of the best teams in the world.
“So you do a lot more attacking than you do defending. We all know his defending is not good enough. And I don’t think it’ll ever be good enough.
“We’re talking about a player who has played 260 games – it’s not going to massively improve.
“When Liverpool drop off and aren’t one of the best teams in Europe, then you’re doing more defending and less attacking.
“We’re seeing the worst traits of Trent and not his strengths going forward. And that is a massive problem.
“I thought this problem would rear its head when Klopp left, and Liverpool went back to how they played when I was a player, where most seasons we were trying to qualify for top four.

“But if Liverpool are trying to qualify for the Champions League on a yearly basis, I am not sure Trent is your man at right back.
“If Liverpool go back to being one of the best teams in Europe, which they will try to do next season, he is your man. But right now the lad needs help.” More

‘He deserves better’ – Tottenham fans ‘feel sorry’ for Harry Winks as he gives update on club situation

That led to a season-long loan switch to Serie A side Sampdoria in August – but it soon turned into a nightmare.
Midfielder Winks suffered an ankle injury that prevented him from making his debut for the Italians until January.
Now he is back and looking to help fire Sampdoria from the foot of the table to top-flight safety.
And he admitted that he feels “indebted” to them for their support through his rehab as he revealed that he had not heard a single thing from his parent club.

Winks told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I feel indebted to Sampdoria, if I had been available from the start I would have given my all.
“The club has always supported me, it was important for my ankle to fully heal.
“No one from Spurs has contacted me, not even the coach.”
And that has left supporters raging.

One tweeted: “Feel sorry for him yes not been great the last few season but probably another player getting mistreated by the club which a sad as Winks has passion for us.”
Another wrote: “I’ve always thought Harry Winks seemed like a top bloke and he’s definitely Spurs through and through. To see that he’s been treated like this by the club is disheartening.”
While another added: “He deserves better.”
Winks, who is under contract at Spurs until 2024, has been with the North London club since he was five-years-old.
Sampdoria are believed to have an option to buy him permanently, but when quizzed on his future, the ten-capped Three Lions ace said: “I have a loan contract until June, I’m satisfied with this experience.
“I don’t know what my future will be after June and I don’t even think about it now.” More

According to Corriere dello Sport, the centre-back wants a two-year contract with the exact same salary he currently earns.
Roma initially offered the 33-year-old a one-year extension and have yet to raise their proposal after he laid out his demands.
However, the same report suggests “white smoke” is likely to come out at the end of the negotiations.
This poses as quite a U-turn by Smalling, who attempted to force a move away from Roma in January.

Inter Milan have been named as potential suitors for the former England international.
Inter are facing financial issues and are likely to lose key defenders in the summer, with Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij both out-of-contract.
The Nerazzurri’s manager Simone Inzaghi sees Smalling as the perfect replacement after a series of impressive performances under Jose Mourinho.
The defender joined Roma in 2019 initially on loan from United and earned a permanent contract a year later.

Manager Graham Potter has struggled at Stamford Bridge since taking over from Thomas Tuchel in September.
Three wins in a row have alleviated some of the pressure on the former Brighton head coach.
But Chelsea remain down in 10th in the Premier League table, with European success their best hope of Champions League qualification next season.
Several names have been linked with replacing Potter if he was to be sacked by owner Todd Boehly.

They include Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and even a return for Tuchel.
But 2010 Premier League winner Malouda, who Chelsea signed during Mourinho’s first stint at the club, has touted the Portuguese head coach to return for a third spell.
Speaking to DAZN Bet, he said: “I could definitely see a third spell for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.
“It’s home for Jose. He knows the club, the identity and he knows football and the fans love him.

“He belongs to Chelsea, and I think he still has his house close to Chelsea. It’s close to his heart.
“He’ll always be the Special One. Football has changed but he has a love for the core of football.
“You associate Mourinho most with Chelsea. I don’t think anyone would complain if he came back to Chelsea to get them back to a competitive level.”
Mourinho won the Premier League title in each of his first two seasons in West London after taking over from Claudio Ranieri in 2004.
He then departed in 2007 – shortly after Malouda joined – but returned six years later.
After finishing third in the first season of his second stint, he won the league in the 2014/15 campaign, before being sacked midway through the following term.
Since then, Mourinho has gone on to manage Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma – where he is still in charge.
The Italian club sit fifth in the Serie A table, one point adrift of the Champions League places.
They are also in the last-16 of the Europa League and take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their tie against Real Sociedad on Thursday. More

Italian outlet Gazzetta Della Sport claim that the Gunners have stepped up their interest in him after finding out Lazio have lowered their demands.
Milinkovic-Savic was on the market for £88million last year with some rumours even suggesting the Serie A side wanted over £100m for the midfielder.

His price could further decrease with his representatives looking to bring the figure down to £31m.

But while the French giants remain keen to secure a deal, Saudi chiefs are hoping they can lure the Barcelona legend to the Middle East.
They are set to offer him the same deal Cristiano Ronaldo, 38, agreed when he joined Al-Nassr in December.
Earlier this week, Messi’s dad, Jorge, was spotted in Riyadh meeting Professor Abdullah Hammad, – head of the Mahd Sports Academy and a close associate of sports minister Prince Abdulaziz Al-Faisal.

But Marca are reporting the Saudis are also set to propose a £194m-a-year offer to the superstar forward.
And his dad’s presence in the country has added further speculation surrounding a potential move to the Saudi Pro League – with Al-Nassr’s rivals Al Hilal the most likely destination.
However, there are a number of other options on the table for Messi.
One of those is a return to Barcelona – where Jorge flew to following his trip to Saudi.

He is understood to want at least one more year at the top level of the game.

And his performances for Argentina at the World Cup proved he remains one of the best players in the world.

Former Germany boss Joachim Low planning return to international management with huge rivals

FORMER GERMANY boss Joachim Low is reportedly eyeing a shock return to the international game. The 63-year-old is sniffing out opportunities to get back into the game after taking an extended break following 15 years in his previous job.

Low guided his home nation Germany to pinnacle of football in 2014 with World Cup glory in Brazil.
Now Bild are claiming that he is interested in taking charge of the South American country that he enjoyed his greatest success in.
Brazil sacked manager Tite after they were eliminated from the World Cup on penalties by Croatia in the quarter final.
Carlo Ancelotti has been heavily linked with leaving Real Madrid to take charge of them.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
However, this fresh update states that Low is also ready to throw his hat into the ring to become the next boss of the five-time world champions.
Low quit Germany and was replaced by Hansi Flick after a number of underwhelming tournament performances with his last match in charge being the 2-0 Euro 2020 defeat to England in June 2021.
Low now finds himself hungry to return to the profession he loves… after he has attended the World Cup in Qatar as a fan.
Speaking to German publication Kicker, the coach recently said: “I already have the intention of taking on a task in football again.

“The fun in this sport is too much for that.
“I feel motivated again when I watch football now – that wasn’t the case for a few months.”
He then added: “If I feel a task appeals to me, I’m ready and attack again.”

Low hasn’t worked in club management since a stint with Austria Wien during the 2003-04 season.
Prior to that, he coached FC Frauenfeld, Stuttgart, Fenerbahce, Karlsruher, Adanaspor and Tirol Innsbruck.
Low then assisted Jurgen Klinsmann as Germany boss between 2004 and 2006, before landing the top job himself.
Low hit the headlines as Germany started their Euro 2016 campaign with a 2-0 win over Ukraine in Lille, France.
Rather than Bastian Schweinsteiger or Shkodran Mustafi’s goals, the match is better remembered for Low sticking his hand down his pants, then having a good root around his crotch on the touchline.
Just when fans thought it was safe to look again, with Low having returned to his seat, they were made to recoil for a second time, as he gave his sweaty hand a hearty sniff.

And it is something that he has developed quite the history in as back in 2008 he had fans borking on the sidelines at the Euros.
To the horror of TV viewers, he appeared to start rubbing his sweaty armpits.
And to cap it off, he delivers what will become a trademark, flat-palmed finger-sniff. Yuck.
Then, two years later, the constant hum of vuvuzelas drove most of us bonkers back at the World Cup in South Africa… but it didn’t drive most of us to do anything like this.
Sat in the dugout, his face a picture of steely concentration, Low was spotted digging deep in his nostril.

After what seemed like an eternity, he appeared to have finally dug out the bogey that he had been craving – but then his pesky assistant Flick (yes, the same one who replaced him) seemed to interrupt him to talk about the game.
