Man City planning shock transfer swoop for Brentford wonderkid Aaron Hickey but will have to pay £30m fee

MANCHESTER CITY plan to swoop for Brentford’s Scotland full-back Aaron Hickey as part of a Pep Guardiola shake-up.The City chief wants a couple of new and ‘modern’ wide defenders as he looks to review those areas in his squad.
Hickey has long attracted attention after starring for Scottish side HeartsCredit: Getty
Hickey, 20, has proved he can play at the top level on EITHER side despite starting out as a left-back for Hearts.
Brentford know City are hot on his trail following his successful switch to the Premier League from Bologna in Italy.
City are still keen on Fulham’s American left-back Antonee Robinson, 25, but have put it on hold because of the big fee.
Hickey would be a similar £30million price but is younger and more adaptable.

Arsenal had been in for the star last summer before Brentford swooped.
He has made 20 Premier League appearances for the Bees this season.
For all of their success this season City have issues at full-back with Kyle Walker at the senior stage of his career and doubts about Joao Cancelo’s future.
Guardiola is very particular about his full-backs and suggested earlier this month that Walker “cannot” do the inverted full-back role that City have often employed.

How Chelsea could line up under Mauricio Pochettino with bold new formation and super-fast forward line

MAURICIO POCHETTINO is the new favourite to take over as Chelsea manager ahead of next season.Pochettino now poses as the likeliest candidate after Julian Nagelsmann pulled out of the running.

Mauricio Pochettino could introduce a 4-2-3-1 formation at Chelsea
The Argentinean tactician tops a three-man shortlist, which also includes Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou.
Former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique has also been linked with the top job at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino would introduce a new attacking style at the Blues, just like he did at Tottenham.
That means the West Londoners would probably have to ditch their signature 3-4-3 formation, which they have been preferring since Antonio Conte’s arrival in 2016.

Therefore, Pochettino could opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation with a focus on youth.
Kepa Arrizabalaga could start in goal with Reece James at right-back and Ben Chilwell on the other side.
Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly may have to make way at centre-back for the much younger pair of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
N’Golo Kante proved he can still go after finally returning from injury and could team up with Premier League record signing Enzo Fernandez.

Noni Madueke could finally return to Chelsea’s line-up to cover the right wing with £88million signing Mykhailo Mudryk on the other side.
Christopher Nkunku is set to join from RB Leipzig and would feature behind the striker.
And Chelsea will have to make a major addition up front as Romelu Lukaku looks set to leave and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has failed to deliver.
Owner Todd Boehly has splashed the cash ever since taking over last summer and could do it again to land Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen.
Pochettino could try and sign Tottenham superstar Harry Kane at Chelsea
But Pochettino could be keen for a reunion with Tottenham star Harry Kane, with whom he enjoyed a stunning partnership at Tottenham.
Kane may also want to join forces with Poch, as he was the one that turned the England captain into a global megastar.
However, the ex-Southampton boss would have to change the formation to a 4-3-3 as the star striker thrives with two forwards next to him.
That would see Mudryk and Nkunku playing next to Kane while Mason Mount would come in to replace Pulisic and team up with Kante as well as Fernandez in midfield. More

Newcastle planning £30m transfer swoop for out-of-favour Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney

NEWCASTLE are confident of landing Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney with Eddie Howe on the lookout for a new left-back.The Magpies manager fiercely defended Dan Burn who has come in for stinging criticism from fans.

Natural centre-back Burn, 30, has kept full-back Matt Targett out of the side but has struggled in recent weeks.
Howe wants an upgrade with more attacking threat and Tierney tops the list.
The injury-plagued Scot, 25, is behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the Gunners’ pecking order but would still cost £30million-plus.
Sources close to Tierney believe a summer Tyneside move is increasingly likely.

That could spell bad news for Targett, though the ex-Aston Villa man is pushing to start against Tottenham on Sunday — given Burn’s poor form.
Yet Howe was quick to praise the 6ft 7in Geordie, saying: “I’m surprised if Dan’s getting criticised because that’s a severe underestimation of what he brings to the team.
“He has been incredible. We didn’t plan the season with him at left-back — it happened through injuries and he got an opportunity.
“He’s a slightly unusual presence there but his attitude and application have been the highest level.

“Sometimes you can’t measure what he gives.
“We value Dan very highly in whatever position he plays and his versatility is important as well.”
Howe has big calls to make after Toon’s 3-0 loss at Aston Villa last weekend.
Although Newcastle still have the Prem’s tightest defence, conceding just 24 goals in 30 games.
Barring the Villa capitulation, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman and Burn have been a rock in front of Toon keeper Nick Pope.
Howe added: “I’ve no problem changing it but I don’t want to make wholesale changes and lose the balance and solidity of a settled back four.
“You have to believe it’s the right moment to make a change.
“This back four has been outstanding. Does one bad day constitute a change? I’ve got to make that call.”

Ian Dawes has been in caretaker charge since Rovers split with Micky Mellon last month but landing Fowler would be a boost for the Wirral outfit.
Fowler would not need  a lucrative deal as he is independently wealthy.
The legendary striker spent nine years at Liverpool across two stints with spells at Leeds and Manchester City in between.
The former England international retired in 2012, a year after taking over at Thai club Muangthong United as player-manager.
    Read More on Football
The 48-year-old then tried his luck in Australia seven years ago as the head coach of Brisbane Roar.
Fowler only stayed a year until he decided to step down and return to England to be close to his family after the coronavirus pandemic broke out.
The Liverpool legend then took over at Indian club East Bengal in 2020 but left a year later.
The ex-Cardiff star is still looking for his first managerial job in the UK, where he stood out as a player.
    Most read in Football
Fowler has previously applied for the manager’s job at his old club Leeds, and was linked with the Swindon post.
He also threw his hat into the ring for the top job at Bradford City last year but to no avail.
Tranmere are in 11th place in the League Two Table with 15 wins and 17 losses out of 44 matches. More

Shocking stat shows why Man Utd must not give De Gea a new contract after calamitous performance vs Sevilla

De Gea was at fault for all three goals on Thursday at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
For the first goal, the goalkeeper and Harry Maguire got into a mix-up, which allowed Youssef En-Nesyri to open the scoring after just eight minutes.
The Spain international was then beaten by a looping header from Loic Bade just after the second half started, in which TV pundit Robbie Savage claimed he could have done better.
The 32-year-old then followed this up with some bad control allowing En-Nesyri to net his second of the game in the 92nd minute.

This comes amid ongoing contract talks between De Gea and United, with the Spaniard’s deal running out in June.
Reports suggest the two parties have agreed on a new four-year deal that includes a major pay cut.
But there’s also a catch in the agreement as it involves highly-incentivised terms for the keeper.
However, shocking stats reveal no Premier League player has made more mistakes leading to a goal across all competitions than De Gea.

Mystery third name in Chelsea shortlist revealed as Blues lean towards naming ex-Tottenham boss Pochettino as manager

A SHOCK name has reportedly been included on Chelsea’s shortlist to become their new manager.Mauricio Pochettino appears to be the frontrunner to take over at the Blues from the axed Graham Potter.

Mauricio Pochettino still appears to be favourite for the jobCredit: Getty
That was after Julian Nagelsmann pulled out of the race for the job following a series of talks with the club.
Poch has been out of work since he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.
Chelsea contacted him over the job and now several reports are claiming that he has boosted his chances of landing the gig after “a series of positive talks” between him and the West London club.
Vincent Kompany, who has led Burnley to instant promotion back to the Premier League, is the other man on Chelsea’s three-man shortlist.

And now The Guardian have revealed the identity of the mystery third candidate – and it is Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian, 57, looks set to win a second consecutive Scottish Premiership title and has impressed with his attacking style of play.
The Hoops are currently 12 points clear of Rangers and have also won consecutive League Cups since his arrival in 2021.
He also has experience of the Champions League after guiding Celtic into the competition this season, although they were eliminated at the group stage.

Postecoglou, who managed Australia at the World Cup in 2018, has also worked in his homeland, Greece and Japan but has not managed in any of Europe’s big leagues.
He remains an outsider at the moment with Pochettino still firmly in the driving seat.
Chelsea are also believed to have considered Feyernoord’s Arne Slot.
Pochettino is one of Tottenham’s most successful and popular managers in recent history – despite failing to win a trophy with the club.
He averaged 1.89 points per game – the most for any Tottenham boss in Premier League history with a minimum of 38 Premier League games in charge.
The ex-Southampton chief capped off his five-year stint at White Hart Lane by leading Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool.
But he was sacked just months later following a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign before eventually taking over at PSG in January 2021, winning the Coupe de France and Ligue 1 prior to his departure.

He departed North London to join Valencia where he has begun to impress for the Spanish outfit on a regular basis.
Born in New York, Musah played for England at every age group level up to U18.
He then declared for USA in 2020 and has won 25 caps for the Stars and Stripes.
Musah was also one of USA’s best-performers at the World Cup as they drew with Wales and England and beat Iran before being eliminated by Holland in the second round.

Now a host of clubs are plotting a transfer swoop for the midfielder this summer, with the Gunners among the frontrunners to snap him up.
Valencia knew interest was mounting in their star and attempted to tie him down to a new long-term deal, but no agreement has yet been reached.
90min are now reporting that Musah “is ready to move on from Valencia” and Arsenal have already been in “contact with the player’s representatives”.
However, Mikel Arteta faces stiff competition from elsewhere in the Premier League for his signature.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both been keeping tabs on him all season.
They have both also reportedly been in discussions with Musah’s representatives.
And both Newcastle and Brighton are also keen on bringing him back to England from Spain.
However, Musah also appears to have plenty of options from abroad.
Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg all could swoop to try and persuade him to head to Germany.
But Atletico Madrid are also allegedly interested in trying to get him to stay in LaLiga.
Musah is under contract until 2026, and it remains to be seen what asking price relegation-threatened Valencia place on his head, although he does have a release clause in his deal of £89m. More
