Petit moved to Chelsea despite two calls from Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger urging him to return to Arsenal.
The midfielder blames his decision on his then-wife wanting to live in London and not Manchester.
And having picked up no silverware in his one season with Barca, he had equally-mixed fortunes at Chelsea before retiring in 2004.
Petit famously helped Arsenal win the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1997-98 then moved to the Nou Camp in 2000.

And he explained how a year later he was once more a wanted man in England.
Petit, 52, told FourFourTwo. “Arsenal approached me but so did Manchester United.
“I spoke to Arsene. He really wanted me back, but I was honest with him.
“I said, ‘I appreciate it and it’s very tempting, but I didn’t feel that you wanted me to stay when I signed for Barcelona a year ago’.

“It’s like divorcing somebody. When you don’t feel desired by them, what’s the point of going back?
“I should have gone to Manchester United, because Sir Alex Ferguson called me twice.
“We had a very good conversation and it was tempting, but once again I listened to my wife.
“She wanted to go back to London – she didn’t want to live in Manchester – so I made the same mistake twice in one year.”
However, the anchorman’s affections clearly still lie with the Gunners.
And he’s backing Emirates manager Mikel Arteta to make further progress next season after being certain of finishing runners-up this term. More

But according to the Independent, the Blues are demanding a staggering £55million for the academy graduate.
And the report insists the Old Trafford side are not even close to matching that sky-high valuation – especially amid uncertainty over the club’s ownership and transfer budget.
Erik ten Hag is prioritising a new striker and a centre-back when the transfer window reopens.
Liverpool and Arsenal have also shown interest in Mount.

But it is understood the 36-cap England ace would favour a move to United, where he would link up with a host of Three Lions team-mates.
And the report adds that if a transfer fee can be agreed on with Chelsea, United would be in pole position and expected to complete the signing of Mount.
That could even see the former Derby loanee link up with best pal Declan Rice again, although the West Ham captain is more likely to join Arsenal.
Mount has refused any new contract offers put on the table by Chelsea.

Frank Lampard dismissed talk of the star’s future and said: “That’s not my answer to make. That’s between Mason and the club.”
Incoming Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be keen to have Mount as part of his set-up when he takes over.
Should Mount join United, SunSport revealed it could trigger a transfer merry-go-round including Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and Rice. More

Shakhtar chief Sergei Palkin has criticised Fifa’s decision to allow their players to move abroad for nothing.
He said: “The over-reaching measures applied by Fifa led to massive loss of player transfer income and a depletion of essential Club revenues.
“We believe the extension of Annex 7 continues to place clubs like FC Shakhtar in Ukraine in a seriously disadvantaged position with zero protection and threatens our very existence.”
Fulham have defied expectations that they would be in a relegation battle this term following promotion.

Man Utd want to land him, with manager Erik ten Hag said to be “obsessed” with Kane.
However, Spurs will not be an easy club to negotiate with, owing to chairman Daniel Levy.
According to the Manchester Evening News, one source who has worked with Levy joked United would need to “kill him” in order to land Kane.
But after securing Champions League football after a 4-1 win over Chelsea, the Red Devils are reluctant to be drawn into a prolonged saga to land the 30-goal star.

Instead, they will turn towards a shortlist of six frontmen if Kane proves to be unattainable.
MEN’s report states Napoli ace Victor Osimhen is top of this list.
The Nigerian’s 23 league goals fired Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990.
However, a £130million price tag could prove to be too hefty a fee for the Red Devils’ liking.

Keeping in the Italian top flight, United are said to be keeping tabs on 20-year-old Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has eight league goals from 18 starts this season.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani is another star on their radar.
The 24-year-old scored in the World Cup semi-final in Qatar, and has enjoyed a strong season in the Bundesliga, netting 14 goals and adding 13 assists.
Ten Hag is also said to be an admirer of Ajax star Mohammed Kudus, 22, and Benifca’s Goncalo Ramos, 21.
Both have hit double figures in their league campaigns, though Kudus has enjoyed his most prolific period coming off the right flank, so represents a versatile option.
Finally, Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson is wanted, but a transfer for the teenager seems highly unlikely given the contract extension he signed last month.
This being said, with the Irish ace admitting his idol growing up was Wayne Rooney, there may be room for a transfer in the future.
While striker will be a position Ten Hag is desperate to address, other positions such as centre-back and midfield will need additions if the club are to fulfil his aim of fighting for the Premier League title.
In these terms, Prem stars Declan Rice and Mason Mount have both been linked with a move to Old Trafford, along with defenders Kim Min-jae and Jermaine Frimpong.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich also remain interested in the midfielder.
However, the Mirror report Rice is ready to make it clear he favours a move to the Emirates – in a major boost for the North Londoners.
Rice, 24, will likely be allowed to leave the London Stadium if a Champions League club comes in and matches the Hammers’ £100million asking price.
But it is Arsenal who have been working hardest, with boss Mikel Arteta devising a plan to rebuild his midfield this summer around Rice.

That could see both Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka exit the club, with Rice and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo top of the transfer wish list.
And the West Ham academy graduate – who was released by Chelsea aged 14 – appears keen to join the project.
Rice has publicly insisted he remains fully focused on the Hammers for now, especially as he prepares to lead his team out in Prague for the Europa Conference League final on June 7.
However, once the season is over, speculation will no doubt ramp up with Rice such an in-demand star.

Chelsea and Liverpool ‘looking to raid Southampton’s £40m midfielder Romeo Lavia’ after relegation to Championship

The midfielder has shone on the South Coast during his 33 appearances despite Southampton being relegated from the Premier League.
Those displays also brought international recognition with Lavia winning his first Belgian cap earlier this year.
With Euro 2024 on the horizon, Lavia is unlikely to want to drop down into the Championship with Saints and seems one of the players certain to leave St Mary’s once the transfer window re-opens.
The Times claim that Southampton see him as “their most valuable asset” as they plot a rebuild and are likely to demand at least £40m for him.

And they also state that both Chelsea and Liverpool are in the running to sign him.
However, despite a clause that says he can be brought back to the Etihad if Man City match any bid made for him, his former club are not believed to be keen.
Jurgen Klopp is planning his own overhaul at Liverpool over the coming months with long-serving stars such as James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain due to depart Anfield with replacements needed.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s director of recruitment Joe Shields signed Lavia for Southampton before he made the switch to Stamford Bridge.
