Mainz expect a positive answer from the Reds this week and should bring the centre-back into their side to add some invaluable experience next season.
The Netherlands Under-21 international joined the Merseysiders in 2019 from Zwolle.
The Dutchman has since only managed a total of four senior appearances for Liverpool.
That is why Van den Berg was sent out on loan by Klopp’s side three times.

However, the versatile defender admitted he gained invaluable experience from those loans, such as at Preston.
Van den Berg said last year: “I needed it, to be fair – game time again.
“Now I’ve got something to come back here and show what I’ve learned and try to impress everyone.
“It’s definitely something I needed. I was there one-and-a-half years. It was a long time. It was great there.

“I played a lot of games; I think especially for a centre-back it’s important to have game experience.
“I played against some good teams, a tough league. I have definitely grown – in size, that’s one thing.
“But just everything really. It has been a great loan but now I’m happy to be back.” More

Man Utd fans facing summer of misery with boss Erik ten Hag’s transfer plans already looking shaky

OH, what joy it is to be a Manchester United fan at the moment — and not because of those three trophies at the Etihad, either.Even the most diehard Red knows their FA Cup final loss was a 2-1 hammering and no one can argue Manchester City, the best team in the world, aren’t worthy European champions.
Manchester United’s transfer plans are uncertain amid the ongoing takeover sagaCredit: PA
But, while a Sky Blue Treble didn’t help, it’s not the reason every United supporter I’ve spoken to looks like they’ve found a quid and lost a tenner.
It’s the prospect of another transfer window opening to a chorus of bold  promises only for them to prove as empty as Tottenham’s trophy cabinet.
Fair enough, we’re only four days in, so there is plenty of time. But there is already a feeling of gloom at how it’s going to pan out.
This is the summer, remember, when Erik ten Hag’s rebuild really takes shape. When a host of deadwood — and there’s plenty  — is replaced by men fit to wear the shirt.
    Read More on Man Utd
Because for all his first season was better than expected, with a third-placed finish and the League Cup, there was still a sense of make do and mend with a lot of the players.
Seeing Jude Bellingham holding up a Real Madrid shirt was no real kick in the teeth. He was never coming to Old Trafford — why would he? So no major disappointment there.
But then the news was leaked that United were no longer pursuing Harry Kane. Oh, and they wouldn’t be in the bidding for Declan Rice either.
Even the deal for Mason Mount — supposedly all but signed and sealed — had failed and the Chelsea star wouldn’t be heading north.
    Most read in Football
Instead just a growing realisation that, Champions League football or not, nothing much had changed in the transfer stakes.
When Sir Alex Ferguson retired, the shrewdies warned at the time that David Gill’s departure would have just as devastating an impact. How right they were.
Gill, for all he was often an easy target for fans, knew how to get transfers done. Very rarely did they fail to get a target over the line when he was doing the negotiating.
Nowadays no one seems to know with 100 per cent surety who’s actually responsible for sealing a deal.

Oh, and don’t forget there is still no sign of the “it’s close to being agreed” takeover going through any time soon. So not even the optimism of knowing a decent kitty which new owners would bring is on the horizon either.
The reality is increasingly and painfully clear: Ten Hag’s only chance of spending serious dough is going to come from sales. And that’s easier said than done.
United would be delighted to offload Harry Maguire, who the manager just doesn’t rate, simple as that. Fair play to him for keeping schtum, by the way, for all his disappointment.
But where does he go? Another season of splinters in the backside from sitting on the bench looks likeliest. Certainly more than the England centre-back finding an acceptable new home.
Will they find a buyer for Fred, for Scott McTominay, for Anthony Martial? For David de Gea if he doesn’t agree to the reduced-terms deal on the table?
That’s before we even get to the players still on the books who haven’t been near Old Trafford for 12 months.
Anyone remember Eric Bailly and Alex Telles? The way it’s going, you’ll see a lot more of them again soon.

Maybe United’s money men will suddenly surprise us all. Maybe they’ll pull a rabbit out of the hat and there he’ll be, a shiny new superhero ready to lead the revolution.
But then again, maybe not. Still, they can always bring Wout Weghorst back for another season… More

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag left fuming with Declan Rice transfer plans in limbo as takeover saga rumbles on

ERIK TEN HAG is angry that his plans to sign Declan Rice are being foiled by Manchester United’s takeover saga. The Red Devils boss feels West Ham skipper Rice would be a perfect addition and has been desperate to make an offer.

But United’s protracted takeover drama has let Arsenal move into pole position for the England ace, 24.
Ten Hag’s spending is restricted while the Glazers decide whether to sell or stay put —  particularly as United are yet to offload any of the expensive dead wood in their squad.
Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is edging closer to winning the takeover battle.
But Prem chiefs would still have to complete the Owners’ and Directors’ Test which takes around ten days — meaning Ten Hag’s hands may be tied for at least another two weeks.

Arsenal’s initial bid of £90million plus add-ons for Rice was rejected.
But they are expected to up their offer with Manchester City also preparing to hijack the deal.
This comes as Marcus Rashford is prepared to become United’s top earner with a new £375,000-a-week deal.
Rashford earns a basic £200,000 per week and has another year left on his contract after the Red Devils triggered their 12-month option to extend.

David de Gea already earns the amount being offered to the forward but is now out of contract.
United have offered De Gea a new deal at a vastly reduced £200,000-a-week — and told him they will not go any higher.
Should the goalkeeper sign, it would effectively see him and Rashford trade salaries. More

His contract was due to expire next summer, but Real Madrid made the decision to TERMINATE his deal at the beginning of June.
Following the announcement of his departure, many reports suggested that Hazard would retire from professional football.
However, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims he could join his brother, Kylian, at RWD Molenbeek in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
Tavolieri tweeted: “At first sight improbable, the possibility of a return [to the] Belgian Jupiler League has been considered by Eden Hazard.

“In this context, the ‘financial’ factor would be considered incidental if he decides to continue his career. Playing with his brother Kylian at RWD Molenbeek is part of the thinking.”
Hazard scored just seven goals in 76 appearances for Real Madrid after joining the club in a huge £125million transfer from Chelsea in 2019.
He now has just one other transfer offer on the table – from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.
The winger retired from international football in December after Belgium were knocked out of the World Cup at the group stages.

Mikel Arteta is now determined to bounce back, but he will have to make some significant improvements to his squad in order to compete with Pep Guardiola’s side again.
Several players have already been linked with a move to North London, including two European champions.
And with the upcoming Premier League season looming, here are five players Arsenal could sign this summer to help mount another title push.
    Declan Rice

The midfielder made over 2000 passes for West Ham this season
The 24-year-old midfielder has been Arteta’s top transfer target since January.

West Ham have already announced that he will be leaving the club this summer, but club chiefs are demanding around £120million for their captain.
The Gunners had a £90m bid rejected earlier this week, but they are expected to launch a second offer worth £100m in the coming days.
A number of other clubs – including Manchester City and Manchester United – have expressed an interest in signing him, but Rice has his sights set on a move to Arsenal.
Should he join the club, the England international would slot straight into Arteta’s core starting line-up with Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard in midfield.

He would significantly strengthen Arsenal’s spine, offering a high level of composure both defensively and going forward.
    Ilkay Gundogan

The midfielder scored eight goals for City this season
Fresh from winning the Treble with Man City, Gundogan will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this month.
He has been linked with a move to both Arsenal and Barcelona, but the Gunners could have the edge in a transfer race thanks to Arteta’s links to City.
Gundogan would add some much-needed experience to Arsenal’s midfield, especially if they find themselves in another title race.
And despite his age, the 32-year-old proved last season that he is still one of the most gifted players in the Premier League.
No matter what team he signs for, he will undoubtedly be viewed as one of the bargains of the summer.
    Kai Havertz

Havertz scored seven goals last season
The Gunners have also been heavily linked with a move for Chelsea ace Havertz in recent weeks.
Arteta views him as a priority target, along with Rice.
Arsenal had their opening bid for the attacking midfielder rejected on Friday, but they are set to table another offer next week.
Chelsea want to keep Havertz, but the Germany international reportedly wants to join the North London side.
Havertz could prove to be an excellent addition for Arteta as he can play in several positions.
Chelsea have regularly used him as a striker, but he also has the ability to play in midfield or on the wing.
    Joao Cancelo

The full-back has been linked with a move to Arsenal
With Kieran Tierney expected to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, Arsenal will need to sign another full-back.
Like Gundogan, Cancelo would offer a winning mentality along with plenty of experience.
He has already won three Premier League titles and the FA Cup, so he would be a huge asset to the Gunners in a title race.
    Rasmus Hojlund

Hojlund has been hailed as the ‘next Erling Haaland’
Arsenal lacked goals at some crucial moments towards the end of the 2022-23 campaign, so Arteta could call in a new striker in order to push for the title next season.
And who better to sign than someone that’s been hailed as the ‘next Erling Haaland’?

The Gunners have previously expressed an interest in signing Hojlund from Atalanta.

Chelsea OUT of transfer race for Inter star Onana and focus attention on three-man keeper shortlist instead

Here’s how Onana played in Serie A last season
David Raya has been named as one of Chelsea’s alternative targets
Mauricio Pochettino is looking to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Edouard Mendy appears destined to leave.
Onana is expected to cost at least £50million.
But with the Evening Standard reporting the Stamford Bridge outfit have pulled out of the race, they will now switch their attention to a shortlist of three other stars.
Tottenham-linked Brentford goalie David Raya is one name on the shortlist.

He is then accompanied by Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Mamardashvili is said to be their second choice target.

Manchester United have now swooped into pole position to sign Onana following Chelsea’s withdrawal.

Arsenal look to pair Declan Rice with Chelsea transfer target in dream midfield with Partey and Xhaka set to go

Arsenal could face competition from Manchester City for Lavia, who included a buyback in last summer’s £10.5m move to the Saints.
Arsenal remain locked in talks over Rice – as Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey are linked with moves away from North London.
West Ham want more than the £106m British record Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.
It is expected that the two clubs will agree on a £100m compromise, with the potential for a further £10m in bonus payments and add-ons.

Rice is on England duty but will be on standby to confirm personal terms and undergo a medical from next week.
He believes he fits perfectly into Mikel Arteta’s policy of building a team around hungry young players who can grow together for the next five or six years.
And the opportunity to play Champions League football is another huge incentive for the midfielder, who has been told he can leave West Ham after rejecting a new £200,000-a-week contract.
