I trained with Mount, Rice and Pulisic but last played in the 8th tier of English football, it’s hard seeing them thrive

A FOOTBALLER who was on Chelsea’s books with Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Christian Pulisic admitted it is hard to watch their success. Tom Carlton, who was with the Blues until the age of 14, played with Mount and Rice at academy level.

And a picture of Carlton with Mount and Pulisic – on trial with Chelsea at the time – went viral on social media.
He told Kent Online: “I didn’t even remember Pulisic being at Chelsea at the time until I saw the picture.
“Apparently, he was there on a 10-day trial and he obviously didn’t get signed at the time.”
Carlton suffered heartbreak with Rice as teenagers when they were released by Chelsea.

He said: “It was hard to take. It was heartbreaking.
“For a week after I was really upset; I didn’t go back to school for the next couple of days because my head was all over the place.
“But two or three days later my dad was receiving phone call after phone call from different clubs, like West Ham, Charlton, Millwall, Fulham, Birmingham, West Brom – a lot of clubs.”
Carlton was signed by West Ham – alongside Rice – but he suffered setback again when he was not offered a professional contract.

He did later join Football League side Colchester before eventually playing semi-pro for Herne Bay in the eighth tier.
Carlton has not been left envious of his former team-mates but admitted it was difficult to watch their rise.
He said: “It’s hard, to be honest.
“It’s not because of jealousy or anything like that – fair play to them for making it that far – but it could have been me and that’s why it’s so hard to watch.”

And personal terms are also said to have been agreed with the Cameroonian international.
Facing the prospect of losing Onana, Inter have opened talks with Bayern Munich for Yann Sommer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Sommer signed for Bayern in as an emergency replacement for Manuel Neuer, who broke his foot on a skiing holiday a month earlier.
The Swiss stopper made 25 appearances in the second half of the season and helped Bayern win the Bundeliga title.

But with Neuer back training again ahead of the new season, Sommer faces an uncertain future in Munich.
He joined the German giants for £8.3m from rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
And he is believed to have a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for the same fee should it be matched.
United’s pursuit of Onana is set to rumble on with Inter holding out for a little more than £50m.

But the Italians could reduce their asking price to £47m to get the deal done as they look to raise funds to sign Romelu Lukaku permanently.
United will hope to have the Onana deal wrapped up by the time they head off on their US tour on July 20.
It comes after David de Gea’s contract expired and forgotten man Dean Henderson readies for talks with the Old Trafford brass.

Thuram – son of French World Cup winner Lilian – turned up at the San Siro in 2020 ahead of a Champions League clash to represent Borussia Monchengladbach against Inter Milan.
However, the tight security blocked his entrance, leading him to google himself.
And the club’s official Twitter account tweeted about the exchange with photos of Thuram searching his own name online, before later deleting the post.
The mix-up is likely caused by the fact Thuram, 25, was sporting a face mask amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, the Frenchman was eventually allowed in to take his place alongside boss Marco Rose for a press conference before the match.
Gladbach missed out on the chance of getting some cash for Thuram in January as they decided to keep him until the end of the season.
The forward was a transfer target of Manchester United following his impressive performances in Germany.
He starred for Gladbach last season, netting 13 goals and providing six assists in his best season to date.

His performances saw him called up for the France national side for the World Cup in Qatar.
