Ex-Man Utd star Chris Smalling hits back at Jose Mourinho in defiant statement after fallout with former Roma manager

And he was criticised by Mourinho in November and his ability to play through pain was questioned.
But Smalling returned fire at his former boss in a defiant statement.
He replied: “Since signing for AS Roma in 2019, my commitment and loyalty to the club has never wavered.
“The minute I stepped foot in Roma, I instantly felt at home. Roma is my home, and the relationship I have built with AS Roma fans is something I cherish dearly.

“For that reason I wanted to jump on here to address some of the rumours that I have seen circulating over recent months.
“Let me start by clarifying that I have never asked to, nor even contemplated, leaving this great club.
“Speaking openly, the last few months have proved to be some of the most frustrating of my career.
“There are things in this game and in life that we can control, and others we simply can’t. This injury has been one thing that we couldn’t.

“No footballer wants to spend their days in a treatment room, and this period of time away from my team-mates has challenged me, with setback after setback.
“I have, and will always, put the needs of my team-mates first, but the absolute priority for the medical team is to guarantee that I can play a significant role in the latter part of the season and for seasons to come.”
Mourinho’s outburst led to speculation that Smalling was ready to leave Italy in the winter window.
The Special One said at the time: “Regarding Smalling, the injury is very much there.
“There are also regular people like us, who aren’t high-performance athletes, who have a greater pain threshold.
“Maybe I can sleep fine with toothache, maybe you struggle. That’s how it is. Smalling isn’t capable of playing through pain.”
But the centre-back – who also worked with Mourinho at Manchester United – may now get the last laugh.
The Portuguese was sacked by Roma earlier following a poor run of results. More

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star warns clubs they would ‘be thick’ to sign Ivan Toney in £100m transfer

CLUBS would have to “be thick” to fork out £100million on Ivan Toney this month, claims William Gallas.Brentford star Toney, 27, is eligible to play again after serving his eight-month betting ban.

The £100million-rated one-cap England international has been linked with a move away from the Bees, with Chelsea and Arsenal interested.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank recently claimed that he was “99 per cent sure” that Toney will stay for the rest of the season.
But the striker himself has refused to rule out a move, instead admitting that he’s eager to play for a “top club”.
Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Gallas would be unimpressed if either of his former clubs matched Brentford’s £100m asking price.

Speaking to Gambling Zone, the Frenchman said: “How much would Arsenal or Chelsea pay for him?
“Some clubs are thick. They don’t realise that there’s too much money in football so they’ll pay £100m for Toney.
“That means the player has to be an international player. He has hardly played for England.
“How can you explain to me that his price is £100m? If you buy a player for £100m, he has to be a young player.
    Most read in Football
“Spending £100m on a 27-year-old is too much. Either you spend £100m on an international player or a young player that a team can invest in for the long-term.”
Toney could return for Brentford in their Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest this Saturday.
Prior to his ban, Toney had scored 20 goals in 33 Prem outings last term.
Speaking to Sky Sports about his future this week, Toney said: “I don’t know. You can never predict when’s the right time to move elsewhere.
“But it’s obvious I want to play for a top club, everyone wants to play for a top club and fight for titles.
“Whether it’s this January that is the right time for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows.”
Pundit Gary Neville has admitted that he hopes Toney stays at Brentford until at least the end of the season.
Speaking on his podcast, the 48-year-old said: “I hope Brentford keep him for the rest of the season and I hope Ivan Toney plays at the highest level as well at some point in the near future.

“But I think for Brentford to keep him for the rest of the season will be really good.
“I mean, there’s talk of Chelsea and Arsenal sniffing around him, but I hope he does stay at Brentford to give them a really strong finish to the season and I am delighted that he is back.”

Arsenal urged to make three major signings in £150million spending spree amid faltering Premier League title bid

ARSENAL legend Ray Parlour insists Mikel Arteta should sign three new stars – even though they might cost a staggering £150million.The Gunners’ Premier League title bid has faltered after three defeats in their last five matches, which has left them in fourth.

Parlour advised Arteta and sporting director Edu to move for a midfielder – possibly Everton star Amadou Onana – a striker and left-back to rekindle the team’s championship bid.
However, the Arsenal hero hinted these sort of additions could be impossible in January as they would cost at least £150m based on the stars that are being touted.
Parlour told SunSport on behalf of NetBet Online Casino when asked which areas need reinforcement: “Well, I certainly believe the midfield area definitely if Thomas Partey does leave because he’s an important player when he plays.
“He’s a dynamic player in that midfield, he’s very good at sitting back and getting back into the back-four and probably Declan Rice can push forward a little bit more.
    Read More on Arsenal
“Onana’s been mentioned from Everton who’s having a good season, I like him he is quite a good player in that midfield area.”
Parlour added that a striker is in order as there is a serious lack of firepower up front for Arsenal.
The Romford Pele believes that is a far cry from his playing days when he looked at the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Sylvain Wiltord and Nwankwo Kanu leading the line.
He said: “The striker is the most important place probably because goals win you games. I always go back to my team. We had four great strikers in our team.

“I mean sometimes five with Kanu, Wiltord, Henry, Bergkamp and Francis Jeffers one year who could bang you a goal when he played.
“So I do believe that they’ve only got two really at the moment, (Gabriel) Martinelli can play up there or (Leandro) Trossard as a false No9 but they’re not out-and-out strikers. So that is certainly the areas for me.”
And the 50-year-old added that another left-back would boost Arteta’s backline following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s injury and some unconvincing displays by Takehiro Tomiyasu as well as Jakub Kiwior.
He added: “Tomiyasu struggled a bit at times, I know he’s a right-footed player. At this point in time Zinchenko is injured but he will hopefully be back very soon.
“So I would always look at central midfield and the spine on this team is so important.
“So I think central midfield is a vital place to strengthen at this present time and obviously a striker, but the players we’re looking at they’re gonna cost you at least £150m to fully fill those gaps.” More
