Wayne Rooney linked with shock managerial return to England with Man Utd legend unsettled in MLS

WAYNE ROONEY could be set for a shock return to English football as Birmingham reportedly eye up a move for the Three Lions legend. The DC United boss, 37, cast doubt over his future with the MLS club earlier this week with his contract set to expire in December.

And now he could be given a way out as Championship side Birmingham emerge as a possible destination for the Manchester United icon.
The Blues, part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, have made a strong start to the season under John Eustace – who has a contract until 2025.
SunSport understands the club are preparing for the eventuality of Eustace leaving the club.
There is no indication he will be sacked after three wins and two draws from their opening five league games.

However, he has been mooted as a possible successor to Michael Beale at Rangers should the Scottish giants seek a replacement.
Rooney last coached in England during the 2021/22 season when he took charge of crisis-stricken Derby.
The Rams had a 21-point deduction and were relegated from the Championship despite him doing an impressive job under the circumstances.
He then took the DC United job last year – who were also struggling and finished bottom of the Eastern Conference.

They sit ninth out of 15 teams in the 2023 campaign, with Rooney recently vocalising his discontent at his own situation as the club prepare for the final six weeks of the regular season.
Earlier this month, he told the Washington Post: “I am slightly disappointed and frustrated there has been no contact for two months.

“We asked about a new deal. We can sit down and talk about it. We haven’t heard back.
“Either way, I can take whatever the situation is. I was hoping we would have, either way, at least spoken about it. That hasn’t been the case.
“That’s frustrating because, either way, I’d rather know what’s the plan because we have to plan for next season. We need to do it earlier rather than later.
“The fact we haven’t heard back is probably signalling one thing, but I’m sure they’ll have their reasons for that. So I’ll wait and see.” More

Demarai Gray completes Al-Ettifaq transfer after ugly Everton exit as club release blunt parting statement

DEMARAI GRAY has joined Al-Ettifaq in an £8million transfer from Everton. The 27-year-old penned a four-year deal with the Saudi Pro League side earlier this week after falling out with Sean Dyche.

He took to Instagram on Thursday morning to bid farewell to Everton fans.
But he also fired a parting shot at club chiefs.
In an official statement, Gray wrote: “After two years with Everton, it’s time to say goodbye.
“I wish everyone at the club the very best and will be forever proud to have played for this great team.

“To the fans, you were always incredible – thank you for your support. You made it a privilege to wear the shirt.
“There has been a lot of speculation about my situation all summer. The truth is, I gave my all to this club on and off the pitch through good and bad.
“I was ready to play as much football as possible this season but it felt like this was not going to happen.
“It’s time for my next chapter. I am match fit and excited to get playing.”

Everton also released a blunt statement to confirm Gray’s departure.
It read: “Everton have sold Demarai Gray to Al-Ettifaq on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.
“Gray moves on after the Blues opted to sell the 27-year-old forward to the Saudi Arabian club. It brings an end to his two-year spell on Merseyside, having signed from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
“Gray made 75 appearances and scored 12 goals for Everton. The Jamaica international started his career with hometown club Birmingham City before joining Leicester City in 2016.”
The winger hit out at Dyche last week after falling out of favour at Goodison Park.
He said: “Everton fans have always been great with me. But it’s so difficult to play for someone who doesn’t show you respect as a person.”
However, the Everton boss hit back at the comments, claiming: “Demarai made it clear that he felt he was getting a move and he told us a move was done, which was interesting to hear from a player.
“We reminded him of the truth of the fact that no moves are done without this club’s say so.”
Gray is now set to join Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson at Al-Ettifaq.
Gerrard was appointed as manager of the Saudi side at the beginning of July, while Henderson completed a £12million transfer from Liverpool three weeks later.

Al-Ettifaq announced the winger’s arrival with a video game-inspired clip on social media.
The video appeared to poke fun at the club’s Saudi Pro League rivals Al-Ittihad, who have so far failed to sign top transfer target Mohamed Salah.

Forgotten man Philippe Coutinho on brink of leaving Aston Villa after club agree to send him out on loan transfer

ASTON VILLA’S forgotten star Philippe Coutinho is on the brink of joining Qatari side Al-Duhail, according to reports. The 31-year-old has accepted a loan deal with the Middle Eastern team after rejecting offers from European giants.

The move can still go ahead as Qatar’s transfer window does not close until September 18th.
Coutinho joined Villa initially on loan from Barcelona in 2022 to work under former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard.
He made the switch permanent last summer for around £17million.
But he managed just one goal and no assists in 2022-23, not featuring after February 18, with just one appearance on the bench in that time.

With the summer arrival of Moussa Diaby, and his recent hamstring injury, Coutinho has dropped further down the pecking order of Unai Emery’s squad.
Now, Fabrizio Romano says Coutinho looks set to join Al-Duhail.
He tweeted: “Al-Duhail are now closing in on Philippe Coutinho deal!
“Agreement being sealed with Aston Villa on loan move with salary covered.”

Coutinho previously received interest from Turkish side Besiktas and Spanish giants Real Betis.
Doha-based Al-Duhail have made a perfect start to the new season with two wins from two to sit top of the table.
There are no real household names in the current squad, with Portuguese defender Ruben Semedo arguably the most famous star.
Brazilian international Coutinho made a name for himself at Inter Milan and signed for Liverpool in January 2013.
He shone at Anfield for five years before a massive £145m transfer to Barcelona.
It did not work out as planned at the Nou Camp, though, leading to a loan to Bayern before returning to England to play at Villa Park. More

Prior to joining Las Palmas he spent four years with PSG, but was limited to just 18 first team appearances in total.

He completed a medical and even had his picture taken with the shirt before refusing to sign on.
However, the striker claimed that a “higher power” stopped him from giving the green light.
Former Aston Villa defender Micah Richards recalled the day Adebayor sensationally snubbed the move while speaking to Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on The Rest is Football podcast.
He said: “There’s a story at Aston Villa. When we got rid of (Christian) Benteke – he was always going to go, he was on fire at the time – we got Adebayor.

“He came, he did his medical. All-but signed the papers. There’s even a picture of him with the shirt.
“The reason why he didn’t sign that day – so he’d done a picture with the shirt and was going to sign in the morning – he had a dream that night that he was making the wrong decision.
“This is no nonsense! He had a dream that the higher power or someone told him it was the wrong move to come to Aston Villa, so he didn’t turn up the next day.”
Shearer then joked: “Are you sure he didn’t have a nightmare that he had to play with Micah Richards again?”

And he’s been joined on the nominations list by countryman Jude Bellingham, who bagged a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid this summer thanks to 14 goals and seven assists in his final season for the Germans.

Karim Benzema and Mohamed Salah have, unsurprisingly, been nominated for the gong.

The most predictable nomination, unsurprisingly, came in the form of Inter Miami new boy Lionel Messi.

They have compared the amount the buying club paid to their market value at the time of the move.
Chelsea signed Brighton star Moises Caicedo for a staggering £115million as they smashed the British transfer record.
The Blues beat Liverpool to bring in the midfielder and handed him an eight-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
However, the study claims that Chelsea overpaid by a huge £50m.

They believe he is worth just £64m.
Saudi Arabian clubs also splashed the cash this summer, especially Al-Hilal, who overpaid by £26m each in the deals for Malcolm and Neymar.
The top ten additionally shows Manchester United overspent in their moves for Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana.
Erik ten Hag signed the Danish striker for a whopping £72m from Italian side Atalanta despite his inexperience, with him having only scored 27 goals in his club career.

    Numbers from Spin Genie UK
The statisticians think United paid £26m too much for Hojlund and £15m for goalkeeper Onana.
Arsenal bolstered their squad by spending over £210m to sign Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber.
The Gunners’ £105m deal for the ex-West Ham captain was £23m too high compared to his market value and Chelsea pocketed £17m more than they should have for Havertz.
RB Leipzig were the big winners of the summer window despite losing key players Dominik Szoboszlai and Josko Gvardiol to Liverpool and Man City respectively.
The German side received a combined £30m more than expected for the duo.
And another transfer that was overvalued saw Matheus Cunha making his initial loan move from Atletico Madrid to Wolves permanent. More
