However, Klopp was their first choice for the dugout and were even willing to let him continue at Liverpool until June when he would take on the new role full-time.
According to The Telegraph, the German tactician was approached earlier this month to lead his national team ahead of the Euros which take place in his home country this June.
But the 56-year-old ruled himself out of the race as he remains committed to the Reds.
That led to Germany swooping in for Nagelsmann, who was sacked by Bayern Munich last season.

But the 36-year-old’s deal runs out after Euro 2024, which means the German FA could still go back for Klopp.
However, the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss appears determined to honour his contract with the Merseysiders, which runs out in 2026.
The Liverpool boss is focused on leading the club’s major rebuild amid an all-time high relationship with club owners the Fenway Sports Group.
The former Mainz manager also praised Nagelsmann’s appointment as a “great solution”.

Everton hope to renegotiate Dele Alli transfer deal with Tottenham with brave star working towards return

EVERTON will attempt to renegotiate the deal with Tottenham that brought Dele Alli to the club, says boss Sean Dyche.American firm 777 Partners are currently trying to take over the Toffees, who are enduring difficult times on and off the pitch.

Everton are yet to win in the Premier League this term while the financial situation at the club has left Dyche with a threadbare squad to choose from.
The potential return of England international Alli, 27, would no doubt provide a boost to the Blues’ attack after his recent struggles.
However, Dyche has admitted that director of football Kevin Thelwell will probably have to speak with Spurs to try and adjust the terms of the package that brought him to Goodison in January 2022 before he plays again.
Alli, who bravely opened up about being sexually abused as a child and his sleeping pill addiction this summer, has only made 13 appearances for Everton.

The Merseysiders will have to pay Spurs £10million once he plays 20 times – which could cause issues with money tight until the potential takeover is completed.
Alli recently suffered a setback in his attempted comeback from a groin operation when a stitch broke open in training seven weeks ago.
And offering an update on the whole situation, Dyche said the Everton chief will attempt to thrash things out with Spurs that will benefit everybody involved.
Speaking ahead of today’s trip to Brentford, he said: “He is not ready yet, when he’s fit and well I am sure Kev will go to Tottenham and say: ‘Right, how can we make this work for everyone?’

“It has never been at that stage so we have to wait for it.”
On his injury, Dyche added: “He was training with us, warming up and doing the drills, and he strikes the ball and is knocked back to square one. It was a real blow to him.
“He’d had an operation on his groin, they internally stitched it like an anchor inside his body, and one of them popped out having a shot and that was it.
“It was incredibly frustrating because he was feeling great. He is still a bit away yet, nowhere near training with us but is beginning to work with the sports science people.”
Alli checked himself into rehab after excessively drinking and consuming sleeping pills following his nightmare loan spell with Besiktas last season.
The former Mk Dons ace, who scored 51 top-flight goals in 181 matches during his six-and-a-half years at Spurs, said: “Now is the right time for me to tell people what’s been going on.
“It’s tough to talk about because it’s something I’ve hid for a long time. I’m scared to talk about it.
“When I came back from Turkey, I found out I needed an operation. I was in a bad place mentally and I decided to go to a modern-day rehab facility for mental health.
“They deal with addiction and trauma. I felt it was time for me.

And he will link up with Liverpool legend Gerrard for the next month on a training basis.
Fabrizio Romano adds that if Lingard impresses during his effective trial, he could end up joining Al-Ettifaq permanently.
Lingard, 30, remains without a club despite his Forest contract ending in June.
He scored twice in 20 appearances for Steve Cooper’s side.

And Lingard has since been training with former loan side West Ham, where he previously netted nine times in 16 games.
However, an offer to rejoin David Moyes’ side has not materialised.
And Lingard could now become the fifth ex-Premier League star to link up with Gerrard, who has settled into his new life by wearing traditional garb on Saudi National day.
Former Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum, ex-Everton winger Demarai Gray and one-time Fulham star Moussa Dembele all ply their trade under Gerrard.

Al-Ettifaq have enjoyed a strong start to the new Saudi season, winning five of their opening seven matches.
Lingard will now train with them for the next month in a bid to prove his fitness.
And should all parties come to an agreement, the 32-time England international could end up penning a contract to join the Middle Eastern giants permanently.
Should a transfer arise, Lingard will be hoping to finally recapture his previous form at United.
Working his way up from the academy, the versatile midfielder ended up scoring 35 goals in 232 games before departing for free in 2022.
Lingard’s last international appearance for England came a year before that.
But a wildcard spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad at next summer’s Euros seems unlikely, despite Al-Ettifaq’s Henderson continuing to turn out for the Three Lions.
Earlier this month, Hammers boss David Moyes admitted he was giving Lingard every chance to get himself fit.
He said: “Jesse has trained with us for three weeks and he’s improved greatly from when he first came in.
“He’s in really good condition – much better condition than he was when he first came in.
“I have to say, when Jesse joined us two years ago I think he scored nine goals in 15 games and was probably the difference between us getting into Europe for the first time.

“I want to give him every opportunity to get himself back in condition and see how he does.

Vincent Kompany denied Man Utd transfer as Sir Alex Ferguson became ‘smitten’ with little-known star on scouting mission

VINCENT KOMPANY missed out on a transfer to Manchester United because Sir Alex Ferguson became “smitten” with a little-known star. The Belgian former defender, 37, became a hero across town at Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouting mission for the Belgian defender was distractedCredit: PA
In 11 years at the Etihad, Kompany won ten major honours including four Premier League titles to etch his name into the club’s folklore and cement his legendary status.
But it could have been very different indeed.
That is because Ferguson had identified Komapany as a transfer target all the way back in 2004 when he was still at Anderlecht, four years before his £7million move to City.
A list of wanted defenders, published in Fergie’s Leading book, showed Kompany’s name alongside Gabriel Heinze, Gerard Pique and Philippe Mexes.

Heinze and Pique both joined while Mexes snubbed United to go to Roma instead.
However, a swoop for Kompany collapsed when Ferguson got distracted on a scouting mission.
The legendary Old Trafford boss said in 2018: “When I went to the Celtic vs Anderlecht Champions League tie in Glasgow in November 2003, it was to watch the Belgian defender Vincent Kompany.
“However, my attention soon gravitated to Celtic’s energetic young midfielder, slight of stature but with an assured, calm way about him.

“What I witnessed was a player with a tremendous set of midfield fundamentals — his movement off the ball, his penetration of the Anderlecht midfield.
“I came away smitten by his performance, not least the timing of his runs.
“Leaving Parkhead I was totally determined to get Liam Miller to Manchester United.”
Irishman Miller completed a switch to United in the summer of 2004 and made 22 appearances, including nine in the Premier League.
He headed to Leeds on loan in 2005, though, before a journeyman career in England, Scotland and Australia.
Miller played for hometown club Cork City in 2015 and spent the final year of his playing days at Wilmington Hammerheads in 2016.
Tragically, the former midfielder died in February 2018, four days before his 37th birthday, after receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Kompany, meanwhile, stayed with Anderlecht for another two years and then signed for Hamburg.
The 89-cap ace, who faces United as Burnley manager on Saturday, said in 2015: “United asked about me, but I had other priorities at the time.
“I was studying for my A-levels and my mother made me finish my education before I could concentrate on football.
