Andy Carroll hoped he would FAIL his medical before whirlwind £35m deadline day transfer to Liverpool

Liverpool needed a replacement up front and turned their attention to Carroll, who was in fine form for Newcastle.
And as Torres completed his switch to Stamford Bridge, Carroll moved to Anfield for £35m.

But in an interview with L’Équipe, he reflected: “From the moment Liverpool made this incredible bid on deadline day, I found myself in a helicopter, without really understanding why.
“As I was injured, I remember hoping to fail my medical.

“This helped me grow up by taking me out of my comfort zone. Because I knew nothing about life and football, apart from Newcastle.“
Carroll struggled in Merseyside and managed just 11 goals in 58 games before moving to West Ham after just two seasons with Liverpool.
The England international would struggle with injuries over the years and he now plays his football in France’s second division for Amiens.
Carroll, now 34, did return to St James Park in 2019 but he only scored two league goals before leaving two years later.

He said: “Nothing happened as I hoped it would.
“The team wasn’t playing well, I wasn’t featuring much and, because of the pandemic.
“We played games in an empty St James’ Park, which was sad because the club draws all its strength from the fans.”

Man Utd eye Everton star who nearly quit because his ‘knees were gone’ in shock transfer after Lisandro Martinez blow

MANCHESTER UNITED are monitoring Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they hunt for a replacement for injured Lisandro Martinez.Martinez had a second operation on his injured metatarsal on Monday after tests revealed it had not healed correctly.

The Argentina defender, 25, had returned to action after initial surgery in April.
But he experienced pain in his foot against Arsenal last month.
Martinez then played against Brighton and Bayern Munich before realising it wasn’t getting any better – as United confirmed he would go under the knife again.
Martinez is now set to be sidelined until the New Year as he tries to overcome the problem once and for all.

But, even if Martinez returns before then, his injury woes will force United into the market for a new centre-back in the January transfer window.
Toffees star Branthwaite is reported to be on Erik ten Hag’s radar, according to the Daily Mail.
But the defender, 21, has had his own share of injury concerns.
Branthwaite earlier this year opened up about suffering from a growing pains condition called Osgood-Schlatter.

And he admitted that he almost quit football at 16 as “his knees were gone.”
Harry Maguire’s future at the club remains in doubt while Raphael Varane’s fitness record means more depth is required.
The Everton ace will join Antonio Silva of Benfica, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba on the Red Devils centre-back shortlist.
Branthwaite had a stellar season on loan from Everton at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven last term.
PSV wanted to buy him in a permanent deal this term, while Manchester City have been among the English clubs also keeping an eye on his progress.
Branthwaite is in talks with Everton over a new contract, but that is unlikely to deter interest in the player if he continues to shine. More

Jamie Carragher says Chelsea’s best XI still needs another FOUR players.. despite ‘flabbergasting’ £1BILLION spend

JAMIE CARRAGHER insists that Chelsea’s starting XI still needs another FOUR new players – despite Todd Boehly’s “flabbergasting” £1BILLION transfer outlay.New manager Mauricio Pochettino secured a much-needed victory on Monday night, which he hopes will finally kickstart their season.

Mykhailo Mudryk, a £88m arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk in January, finally opened his account for the Blues before Armando Broja celebrated his return from injury with the other in the 2-0 win over Fulham.
That was only Chelsea’s second victory from their opening seven Premier League matches and leaves them sitting 11th in the table.
There is no disguising it is a disappointing return for owners Boehly and Clearlake Capital after they have forked out over a BILLION quid on new players over the past year.
And, Liverpool legend Carragher is adamant that they squad are still way off being able to compete at the top of the table.

After seeing the starting line-up last night, Carra believes Poch needs at least four more players in his team in order to have any chance of challenging Manchester City.
The pundit told Sky Sports: “You rarely get your best 11 on the pitch, they have injuries but if you get their team on the pitch regularly I believe they are fighting for top four.
“If you tell me that is their best team after spending £1billion, they still need four players to make them capable of catching Man City.
“Centre forward (Nicolas Jackson) isn’t good enough, goalkeeper (Robert Sanchez) isn’t good enough, centre-back and another midfielder. To think Chelsea have spent £1billion and still feel half a team away from competing for the Premier League is flabbergasting.”

Jackson, 22, joined from Villarreal for £35m this summer but has only scored one league goal and missed last night’s game through suspension after amassing five yellow cards.
Meanwhile, Sanchez cost £25m from Brighton, despite finishing last term as third-choice at the Seagulls.
He has found himself No 1 under Poch following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s departure to Real Madrid.
With no European football this term, Chelsea are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Burnley before facing Arsenal in a London derby after the international break on home turf. More

Mitchell started out as a footballer cutting his teeth at Manchester City and Wigan’s youth set up but spent his senior career playing for the lower leagues, mostly on loan from the Latics and MK Dons.
The Mancunian was forced to prematurely retire in 2009 at the age of 27 due to injuries but then found success as a sporting director.
It all started in 2010 at former club MK Dons where he carved his famous philosophy that sees him only signing players under the age of 24, starting with Dele Alli.
After making a name for himself with the Dons he moved to Southampton two years later and pulled off a string of great signings, like Maya Yoshida, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle.
That led to a job at Tottenham in 2014 and he landed Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Son Heung-Min and of course Alli.
Mitchell resigned in 2016 and went to RB Leipzig in 2018 where he was quickly promoted to Chief Technical Director overseeing all the Red Bull teams.
The Stalybridge native signed Dani Olmo, Christopher Nkunku, Ademola Lookman, Patrik Schick, Dayot Upamecano and Matheus Cunha during his time at Leipzig.
He then moved to Monaco in 2020 but had less success even though he still managed to bring in the likes of Axel Disasi and Breel Embolo.

Chelsea hoping to raise staggering £500MILLION as Todd Boehly seeks loan to keep up with Premier League rivals

CHELSEA are looking to raise up to £500million from US financial institutions. The big spenders of Stamford Bridge are seeking a loan — something other Premier League clubs have done in recent years.

It comes amid a remarkable period of transfer spending from new owner Todd Boehly.
The American, 50, has spent £1BN across the last three transfer windows.
Yet the unprecedented level of spending has done nothing to improve Chelsea on the pitch.
Managers Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard all left in difficult circumstances last season.

And Mauricio Pochettino is now struggling to get a tune out of his inflated squad.
The Blues have won just one of their opening six Premier League games.
That dreadful start leaves them 15th in the table ahead of a West London derby with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday night.
They have been linked with a number of signings in the January transfer window.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are two strikers mooted as possible targets for the Blues.
But former player Frank Leboeuf feels Boehly’s ownership of the club could prove fatal for Chelsea.
He told CasinosEnLigne.com: “Let’s be realistic – Chelsea are a mid-table club. Attracting players will be tough and players like [Kylian] Mbappe won’t want to come.
“The big players want to play in the Champions League. Arsenal had that problem for years, and so did Manchester United.
“Top players won’t come to Chelsea because the club has fallen.
“It’s unbelievable what the club has become just two years on from their Champions League win. I’m disgusted with it.
“I have nothing against Todd Boehly, but they need to change things quickly or else they’ll kill the club.” More
