The 31-year-old was replaced by Martin Dubravka in the 86th minute of Newcastle’s 1-0 win.
Dubravka, 34, spent the first half of last season backing up De Gea while on loan at Old Trafford.
He could now play the role of deputy to the Spaniard once again, with Newcastle interested in signing De Gea on a free transfer as cover for Pope.
The 33-year-old has been without a club since being released by Man Utd at the end of last season.

When players return from injury, this could be Newcastle line-up after January deals
Eddie Howe is set to rely on Martin Dubravka between the sticks until the January transfer window opens.
But with backing from mega-rich Saudi owners, Newcastle could splash the cash again with several players on their radar.
Extra numbers are needed at St James’ Park amid an injury crisis that sees ten first-team players in the treatment room.
And the fixtures are coming thick and fast with the Toon still going strong in four competitions.

They are eyeing a second successive top four finish in the league, remain in the Carabao Cup and face a derby against bitter rivals Sunderland in the third round of the FA Cup.
Meanwhile, they hope to be in the Champions League, or at least Europa League at the turn of the year.
Both David De Gea and Aaron Ramsdale have both been linked with replacing Pope.
The ex-Manchester United stopper is still a free agent after ending his 12-year stay at Old Trafford.

Newcastle could also try to sign Aaron Ramsdale and Kalvin Phillips
Speculation suggests Newcastle will consider making De Gea an offer if Dubravka fails to impress in December.
Reports also claim that Ramsdale could be keen on leaving Arsenal after losing the No1 spot to David Raya.
The Gunners do not want to let him go in January, but England boss Gareth Southgate has already stressed his place in the Euros squad could be in jeopardy if he’s not playing regularly.
Further up the pitch, Ruben Neves looks set to join the Magpies on loan.
Premier League clubs failed to ban sides signing players from teams they share owners with.
And it makes Neves’ move to Newcastle straightforward as he is at fellow PIF-owned club Al-Hilal.
Another option to allow for rotation in midfield amid Sandro Tonali’s ten-month ban is Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips.
With the Euros on the horizon, he could want to leave the Etihad as he has only played 89 Prem minutes this season.
But Juventus are supposedly ahead of Newcastle in the race to sign him.
With Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy both injured, the club may also want a new winger to improve squad depth.
Reports from Spain claim the club could make a £35million bid for Ferran Torres.
The Barcelona star could be sold amid the Catalan giants’ financial difficulties.
He could compete with Miguel Almiron and the on-fire Anthony Gordon, who has scored six goals and notched three assists this season.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have long-term interest in PSG striker Hugo Ekitike.

A loan deal has been proposed in January although the French club would rather sell the 21-year-old permanently with him surplus to requirements in Paris.
Newcastle’s interest in Ekitike dates back to 2022 and he has been linked with other Prem clubs like West Ham.

Italian giants Juventus hold a concrete interest in the winger as they look to challenge Inter to win the Serie A.
In terms of a transfer fee, there is reportedly no fixed price tag – and Sancho not playing for the club since September is only diminishing his value.
Sancho is playing a waiting game, however, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment in United set to be completed soon.
Ratcliffe is understood to be a big fan of ten Hag, but the manager is coming under significant pressure following a string of poor results.

Sancho and ten Hag remain in a standoff dating back to September when the winger was left out of the squad for the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal.
Sancho took to social media to claim that he had been made a “scapegoat” after ten Hag revealed he’d left him out of the squad for training poorly.
Although he has since deleted the posts, ten Hag is refusing to include the winger in his squad until Sancho apologises for his comments.
The winger has been axed from United’s WhatsApp group after already being barred from training with the senior side or using any of their facilities, including the canteen.

The goalkeeper was limited to just 16 appearances across all competitions last season due to a horrific leg injury sustained on a ski trip in December.
He returned to competitive action in October and has since made seven appearances.

And he was handed a new deal as a result, with back-up keeper Sven Ulreich also extending.

Discussing Neuer’s new contract, manager Thomas Tuchel said: “As long as he feels as good and keeps it as he is. We’re not giving it any limits. Then he can stand in goal for as long as he wants.”

AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan, Switzerland international Gregor Kobel and on-loan Alexander Nubel are being considered.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Chansiri ready to spend big on striker loan transfer as he U-turns on Scrouge-like pledge

With the hunt now on, the Championship side may even pay around £30,000 a week for the right man.
A remarkable turnaround for Chansiri, who recently asked fans to help subsidise the club.
Last month SunSport revealed the Thai owner would not sell the up even if they were relegated back to League One.
In a shock statement in September, the 55-year-old refused to commit more money to the club.

He said: “Hello to all Sheffield Wednesday fans.
“I have thought about making this statement for some time and it is extremely difficult for me to do something that I never thought I would have to do.
“But in the end, I think it is the time to say some things that I feel I have to say before it is too late.
“First of all, I would like to thank all the fans who have supported the club so well over the past nine years or so since I came to Sheffield Wednesday.

“There has been joy and sorrow, the joy we have shared together and in times of sorrow we have supported each other.
“Right now, we are not in a good situation in the table and I believe that supporters have every right to voice opinions, speak from the heart and say anything you wish about the football.
“That is the nature of the game, which I always respect. But I also believe there are limits to balance for the benefits of the club and all other stakeholders as a whole.”
He added: “We all love Sheffield Wednesday and I am a supporter as well as the owner who must love and care for the club more than anyone else because of the position I am in as chairman.
“I must take responsibility for everything at the club, including the financial support which is something I always do. But from now, I will not put additional money into the club.
“If you say you are the owner and I am the custodian, then show me how to be the good owner and help save your club. You want me to leave but you want me to spend money?
“If you want me to leave, then show me how to run the club and invest the money before I do that.
“You have no right to ask me to leave. I am the one who saved the club and spent the money for the club, I am the one who needs to pay around £2m on average every month.
“Some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club.
“This is not acceptable and as a result I am not willing to inject more money while I am being treated unfairly by those fans.
“The club needs support from everyone during difficult times. In football, there are good times and not so good times.
