Daniel Levy deserves credit – his Postecoglou gamble has Spurs in title race and he’s even making early January signings

SOME Tottenham fans would sooner name their kids Bukayo, Arsene or Thierry than praise Daniel Levy. But others must be feeling a little conflicted about the man so many love to hate right now.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has played a big part in this season’s successCredit: Getty
Things have changed so much in N17 that the calamitous end to last season, when Antonio Conte metaphorically set fire to the place on his way out, feels like a lifetime ago.
But during those dark days it was Levy who was the target, with some justification, of the supporters’ ire via relentless taunts, match after match.
They had had enough of the perceived lack of investment in the team, historically at least, increased ticket prices and silverware famine during his 23-year reign – and they wanted him out.
How might they feel now, though, with Spurs suddenly looking like one of the most upwardly-mobile, sustainable and easy-on-the-eye clubs in the Premier League?
    Read More on Football
There will be those that refuse to give Levy a shred of credit under any circumstances.
They would argue he stumbled onto the jackpot that is Ange Postecoglou, who they see as single-handedly reversing their fortunes.
The Aussie has undoubtedly been the critical factor in the transformation, and it is true that other candidates were pursued, such as Julian Nagelsmann and Arne Slot.
But ultimately Levy got it right by appointing Postecoglou, which may look an easy choice now but at the time it looked risky.

The 58-year-old had not managed in any of Europe’s major leagues. Other owners would not have taken the leap, even with the treble at Celtic.
Postecoglou himself told journalists in a plush Perth hotel during Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia in July how he had been rejected by multiple Championship and Premier League clubs previously.
Even Huddersfield were one of them – albeit back in 2019 – and the gruff boss likened his failed meetings with prospective English employers to that of a depressing set of Hollywood auditions.
Now Postecoglou, by his own admission, has Spurs in a title race – and playing the kind of football that even the most ardent Arsenal fans would admit is thrilling.
Levy took part in a fans’ forum in September and owned up to his mistakes in hiring ill-fitting, “trophy managers” like Jose Mourinho and Conte.
He said he felt a lot of “pressure” after those misfires and needed to appoint someone who could take the club “back to its roots” of playing sexy football, even if it took longer to achieve success.
Postecoglou has proved to be that man, masterminding Spurs into a position few could have dreamt of at that stage – and has been backed by Levy in the process.
    KEY SIGNINGS
It was the Aussie who pushed for unknown goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario – dubbed this week as the Premier League signing of the season by Robbie Keane – and he got him early.
James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson were all signed for considerable fees – even if the first two now look like huge bargains.
Yes, Harry Kane was sold and there will be some fans who will never sway from the opinion that you should never sell your greatest-ever player.
Flogging him to the relatively inoffensive Bayern Munich for £104million, given he was going for free in a year’s time, was probably the most palatable exit going.
Spurs had not signed a player before January 12 in the winter window since the forgettable capture of Bongani Khumalo in 2011. This year, they signed two.
In fairness, that was more due to how gettable Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin were at the time.
Werner was out of favour at RB Leipzig and Genoa were happy to do a quick deal for Dragusin, though Spurs would have held on for longer for the Romanian as Postecoglou wanted him so much.
But Levy still bucked a personal trend and signed them up quickly.
Keeping scandal-hit Fabio Paratici on as a consultant after his resignation in April was controversial – but some will say worth it given his transfer prowess, as cynical as that is.
Those close to Levy have noticed no particular difference in his demeanour this season.
His poker face remains inscrutable whether things are going swimmingly or desperately.
He continues to split his time at the training ground and the Spurs’ Lilywhite House office by the stadium in the same way as he did last season.
And he treats Postecoglou in the same way as he did Conte, Mourinho and all the other bosses he has hired and fired over the years.
In the age of clubs being owned by countries and hedge funds, he represents more of an old-school owner.
And one whose consistent belief in self-sustainability, however annoying it may be to fans, is proving to be the correct call given the Prem’s new-found regulatory teeth.

Levy claimed at that fans’ forum that “I want to win as much as anyone else”; those close to him emphasise how much he cares. Some fans may never be convinced that he does.
But to deny Levy has played some part in Spurs’ success story this season would be as short-sighted as it is to deny his failings in the past.

Hammers’ technical director Tim Steidten is pushing for the massive swoop and could pull it off before the window shuts.
Boniface has been a huge hit in the Bundesliga since joining in the summer from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.
Steidten is trying to set up a deal with his former club Leverkusen.
West Ham have the cash for a splash and manager David Moyes is behind the idea of going big for a proven striker.

The Irons have long-term doubts over Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, who could both be shifted out if Boniface is landed.
They are both on big wages so it would help to balance the books.
West Ham could also be selling Said Benrahma later this month amid reported interest from French clubs.
Boniface only joined Leverkusen last summer but they could be prepared to sell at a big profit and then go and find a replacement.

The powerful frontman has scored ten times so far in the German top-flight and is the young and exciting type who would also keep his value.
Boniface misses the Africa Cup of Nations with injury but should be fit soon and the lay-off is not a problem for West Ham.
The Hammers have also made a surprise inquiry for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.
The Colombian, 20, wants more game time and may fancy a move.
However, Villa are unlikely to do business for Duran, who has other admirers including Chelsea, unless there is a big offer rather than a loan deal on the table. More

Chelsea willing to let Armando Broja leave on a ‘sweet deal’ this month as Premier League rivals eye transfer

Slough-born Broja, 22, is on several hit-lists, with Wolves and Fulham among his admirers.
But a lot of Prem outfits are finding this window tricky because of the financial restrictions.
Therefore, a loan with an obligation to buy for £35m at the end of the season suits the Blues.
Chelsea did a similar ‘sweet’ deal with Newcastle when they sent Lewis Hall to them on loan with a view to a buy in the summer.

The Hammers are set for a busy second half of the season, as they compete in the Premier League and in Europe.
Following Lucas Paqueta’s recent calf injury, Moyes is eager to recruit a new attacking midfielder.
Arsenal star Smith Rowe would fit the bill, having struggled for game time during the last 18 months.
The 23-year-old did not start a single Premier League game last season as he battled injuries.

This term he has started just once in the Prem, being limited to just 137 minutes in the league.
According to The Guardian, the Hammers have enquired about Smith Rowe’s availability.
The attacking midfielder has earned three England caps, but has not featured for Gareth Southgate’s side since March 2022.
West Ham are also keen on Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips.

The East Londoners tried to sign the midfielder in January 2022 during his final season at Leeds.
Moyes, 60, remains a fan of the 28-year-old, whose regular England squad spot could be under threat.
City are claimed to be demanding a £7million loan fee for Phillips, who they bought for £45m in July 2022.
The Hammers are hoping to negotiate the loan fee down as the window nears its conclusion.
But they could face competition from the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.
Phillips has played just 89 minutes of Premier League football across four cameos this season.
Last month, Guardiola said of the out-of-favour midfielder: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel so sorry for my decision for him. I’ve said that many times.
“He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him and I’m so sorry.
“The only thing I can say about him is I am asking for good personalities and characters and he is a perfect example. And after that I have to give him something and I didn’t do that.”

Three reasons why Ivan Toney would be better January transfer for Chelsea than Karim Benzema as Blues hunt new striker

IN the January transfer window almost every team in football wants to add the same thing – a striker to score goals.Given the spending at Chelsea in recent windows, it should come as no surprise that they are actively pursuing a new forward.

Karim Benzema is being linked with a move away from Saudi ArabiaCredit: Getty
The decision to spend £32million on Nicolas Jackson has not worked out despite the 22-year-old Senegalese star scoring seven and assisting two in 19 Premier League matches.
While these numbers are respectable, it is not enough for a side with ambitions of finishing in the top four.
And two names surfacing as potential targets for the Blues are Brentford man Ivan Toney and Al-Ittihad’s Karim Benzema.
Both forwards come with an element of risk.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Toney is yet to play for Brentford this season having just served a long term ban for betting offences.
And Benzema is very much in the latter stages of his career having left Real Madrid in the summer to move to a far less competitive and intense league.
Yet despite those negatives, Toney and Benzema represent excellent options for Chelsea in the January window.
Here SunSport takes an in-depth into which of the two would be the better signing.
    Most read in Football
Presence and movement in the area
While there is no doubt Jackson is an excellent physical striker – standing at 6ft 2in with a powerful build and good pace – he still lacks a presence in the opposition area.
The best strikers in the world are capable of positioning themselves in spots that occupy two or three defenders.
Both Toney and Benzema are excellent penalty area strikers, albeit for slightly different reasons.
Toney uses power and speed to gain an advantage and create space, while Benzema’s movement is more subtle as he makes clever runs that attack space when defenders lose concentration.
Toney reads the space and is quick to attack and exploit the area
While both have top movement, both are also proven goalscorers at a high level.
Toney has had more of a long route to the top level having started his career at Newcastle before establishing himself as a first-team player at Peterborough.
He then moved to Brentford when they were in the Championship.
But last season saw Toney score 21 goals in all competitions, while Benzema bagged 31 in his final season at Real Madrid.
There is no doubt the skill set of the pair means they would score goals at Chelsea.
As the defenders focus on the near post, Benzema pulls off to curve his run and attack the back post
It is difficult to separate Toney and Benzema when considering their effectiveness in front of goal.
Both are proven strikers and Toney has an excellent profile for the Premier League.
The key thing, however, is that Chelsea find a way to create chances for the striker they end up looking to sign.
    Creativity in the final third
If you ask Cristiano Ronaldo who is the best striker he has ever played with he will always says Benzema.
The French striker adapted his own game to become more of a creative presence for Real Madrid when Ronaldo was at his peak.
Indeed, Benzema has long been one of the most underrated creative forwards at the top level.
The same, however, could be said of Toney as he has real vision and creativity when he receives the ball in the final third.
Chelsea have players who are capable of breaking the lines and getting forward to support the striker within their system.
If they add a striker who has the ability to receive the ball and break the defensive line with through balls then they will create more opportunities.
As Toney receives possession and turns, he has the vision and ability to find the runner
Part of the issue that Chelsea have faced this season is that they have ended up playing attacking midfielders as strikers.
And while Jackson struggles, there is an argument the London club need to add a more well-rounded striker to their squad.
Other than Erling Haaland, who is something of an outlier, all top strikers in the modern game need to be able to involve themselves in the build-up play.
If Chelsea are able to recruit a striker who can find runs and drop into space to drag defenders out of position then they will become much more difficult to play against.
Benzema sees a team-mate on the break and plays an accurate pass to release them
While both Toney and Benzema are strong in terms of receiving and creating threat through their passing in the final third, Toney has the edge here.
He is more mobile and aggressive in his movements to drop and receive the ball in tight areas.
    Playing with back to goal
One of the biggest strengths that Chelsea currently have in their squad is their ability to play progressive passes from the midfield.
Both Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are progressive passers with the ability to break lines of pressure.
The problem that Chelsea have at the moment is they do not have a forward player that is effective when receiving those passes.
Toney and Benzema are effective at coming towards the ball and receiving it with their back to goal.
They are both strong when providing their teams with a platform from which they can build their attacks.
They will take possession and then link the play around the final third before moving forward.
Toney drops in to receive a pass, drags his marker out of position and creates space for others
Once again Toney is more mobile and aggressive in his movements than Benzema and he will look to drop into the midfield on a regular basis.
Neither are strikers that rely on pace to run in behind the defensive line, with both thriving more in possession-dominant systems.
Chelsea should always be expecting to dominate the ball against their opposition given the quality in their squad.
At the moment, for all of the money that Chelsea have invested in their midfield unit, they are not getting the best out of these players because they do not have the attacking players to receive and link the play back to goal.
Benzema drops into midfield and finds runners going beyond him
Once again, in terms of the ability to receive and play with their back to goal, Toney is more favourable over Benzema given he is fresher and more mobile.
    Conclusion
It is easy to make the argument that for a top club like Chelsea you could flip a coin between Toney and Benzema.
Both are top centre forwards that would improve Pochettino’s side.
But Toney is nine years younger with a more mobile and dynamic style of play.
And if Chelsea were to sign Benzema then they would need a player to replace him with again in the summer.
    READ MORE SUN STORIES
Toney would solve their problems for several seasons, so he seems like the most viable option.

Despite his strong start at the Stade Vélodrome, Tavares fell down the pecking order under Igor Tudor.
He was kicked out of a training session at the end of the campaign for an alleged lack of effort and returned to Arsenal in the summer.
But despite the misdemeanour, Marseille officials want him to return.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, the Olympians are in the market for a new left-back and Tavares is on their list of targets.

The striker failed to stand out at the Toffees and was sent out on loan twice to Paris Saint-Germain and Juve, who signed him back on a permanent deal last year.
However, the 23-year-old has fallen down the pecking order in Turin with the emergence of 18-year-old wonderkid Kenan Yildiz.
And according to Sport Mediaset, the Italy international is now moving to Atletico on a surprise loan move during the January transfer window.
Kean is “very close” to completing the move and joining Diego Simeone’s side.

In fact, the two clubs have already reached an agreement and are working on the final details to complete the deal in the next few days.
Kean is looking for more minutes and Atleti could offer him Champions League football as they are set to face Inter Milan in the Last 16.
And the LaLiga giants can also help him seal a place in Luciano Spalletti’s Italy side ahead of Euro 2024.
