Newcastle 6 Tottenham 1: Spurs suffer humiliating first-half capitulation as Toon take giant step towards top four place

TOTTENHAM sunk to a new low as they were blitzed by top four rivals Newcastle in a nightmare opening 21 minutes. And now Eddie Howe’s side are dreaming of a return to Europe’s top table after thrashing hapless Spurs in front of a rocking St. James’ Park.

Billed as a battle for the Champions League, Newcastle would have been given a tougher game by local ninth-tier side Heaton Stannington.
Even for shambolic Spurs’ standards, this was a horrifying new low.

Some of their shell-shocked supporters started making the 280-mile trip back home after the Magpies’ third just nine minutes in.

Given how high they are housed in the Leazes End, it would have been 5-0 by the time those on the slow side made it to the bottom.
Howe’s Mags were exceptional as they took a giant leap towards securing a top-four finish, but they weren’t 5-0 up inside 21 minutes brilliant.
For that to happen you need a willing partner to roll over, and Tottenham were more than happy to oblige.
Starting with a four-man defence for the first time in 15 months, nobody had a clue what they were doing.

Not for the first time, Antonio Conte was proved right about this hopeless rabble. Three, four, or five, it makes no difference when they’re individually as bad as this lot.

No shape, no urgency and certainly no commitment or fight.
At half-time on Sky, ex-defender Danny Rose – who hasn’t kicked a ball for 16 months – laughed: “All I’ve been thinking all half is how am I unemployed!”
Forget about the Champions League – they are now six points off fourth – there’s a good chance they’ll miss out on Europe altogether now.
Despite not finishing below seventh since 2008/09, nobody who watched this car crash would bet against that happening now.
A broken football club from top to bottom, this will sting for a long time.
For the Geordies, life doesn’t get any better.
Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak both bagged braces, with the £60million Swede taking his season’s tally to 10 in his 11th start.
Joelinton and Callum Wilson scored the others, leaving Howe’s side third and six points ahead of the chasing pack as they look to seal Champions League football for the first time in 20 years.
Just 59 seconds were on the clock when the rout began.
Joelinton picked it up on the left wing before cutting inside past two hopeless challenges.
Harry Kane pulled one back for Tottenham just after the restartCredit: Getty

The Brazilian’s low effort was saved by Hugo Lloris but he could only parry to Murphy, who buried into the roof.
Spurs fans immediately started chanting ‘We want Levy out’ – yet it was about to get a whole lot worse for them before long.
Joelinton made it 2-0 six minutes in, darting in off his left wing to pick up Fabian Schar’s raking ball  before taking it around Lloris slotting into an empty net.
A great goal but what on earth was right-back Pedro Porro and Cristian Romero doing allowing him in like that?
Next up was Murphy’s second three minutes later, a 25-yard thunderbolt beyond the rooted Lloris.
A brilliant strike leaving the winger genuinely shocked he had it in him but it was woeful from Eric Dier Son Heung-min this time.
The ball into him was poor and the South Korean was weak, allowing Fabian Schar to nick it off him with ease.
By this stage the Spurs players were arguing everywhere you looked.
Interim boss Stellini was ranting and raving, pointing here and there – not that anybody is listening to him anymore.
The North Londoners had never been 3-0 down inside 10 minutes in the Prem before.
The heavens then opened, and it was raining more goals before long.
Callum Wilson added more misery as he grabbed a sixthCredit: Getty
To be fair to Tottenham, they held on for another 10 minutes before it was four.
Dejan Kulusevski lost on the left of Toon’s box, with Joe Willock driving towards halfway and releasing Isak in behind Eric Dier with a gorgeous pass with the outside of his boot.
The Swede buried into the bottom corner – and he did exactly the same TWO minutes later.
Some neat play down the right had Spurs chasing shadows before Sean Longstaff’s backheel teed Isak up to shoot across the hapless Lloris.
It was about keeping it to single figures now with 70 minutes remaining, so Davinson Sanchez – mercilessly booed by his own fans last week – was on for Pape Sarr to shore things up.

Skipper Lloris was hooked at the break for Fraser Forster and the supporters still inside St James’ celebrated ironically when Harry Kane made it 5-1 in the 49th minute.
Yet any hopes of damage limitation were ruined when sub Callum Wilson diverted Miguel Almiron’s wayward shot home with his first touch, 65 seconds after replacing Isak.  More

Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim is also now seen as an outsider for the Chelsea role.
But Luis Enrique has NOT been placed among the top candidates for the position.
The Spaniard, 52, flew to London for talks with club bosses two weeks ago, but things have not progressed since then.
And that could leave the door open for Spurs – who are keen on the ex-Barcelona man despite Daniel Levy previously holding reservations about his lack of Premier League experience.
Poch has also been linked with a return, and some supporters that are desperate to have him back are fuming with the Chelsea speculation.
One wrote: “Why would you want Poch if he’s been talking to Chelsea? No thanks.”
While another said: “Please Poch, don’t go to Chelsea. Please. That will be the finisher, I can’t take any more hits…..”
Pochettino is one of Spurs’ most successful and popular managers in recent history – despite failing to win a trophy with the club.
He averaged 1.89 points per game – the most for any Tottenham boss in Premier League history with a minimum of 38 Premier League games in charge.

Harry Kane is ‘too old and expensive’ for Bayern Munich claims club legend in boost to Man Utd transfer hopes

Bayern Munich and Manchester United are believed to be the frontrunners for the Tottenham star.
But the German giants have been urged to swerve Kane by one of their former players.
Matthaus, who won the league five times in his two spells in Bavaria, believes Kane is not worth the cost at the age of 29 and prefers 24-year-old Victor Osimhen of Napoli.
He also believes that Spurs’ record top scorer, who will likely command a fee north of £100m, is too expensive.

Writing for Sky Deutschland, the 62-year-old said: “I’m excited to see if a new striker comes along.
“Everyone is talking about Victor Osimhen for his sensational performance at Napoli. You never know if he can do that in Munich, but I think he would be a good fit.
“Randal Kolo Muani may need a little more room and space than a Bayern striker usually has, but he’s also good in the box and could work in Munich. Harry Kane would be too old and too expensive for me.
“The price-performance ratio could speak for [Werder Bremen striker] Niclas Füllkrug. He would probably be available for €20-25 million [£17.6m-£22m] and score 25 goals in Munich.”

Well, Jamie Carragher seems to think all of those in the frame would choose Chelsea over Spurs.

“The fact that they put Frank Lampard in tells me they may already have someone lined up, but that person will come in the summer.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes out in the next few weeks that Julian Naglesmann has agreed to join Chelsea, but he wanted some time out and to get ready for the summer and have a pre-season.
“I might be totally wrong, and they might not have anyone and are still working on it, but to sign Frank straight away and not give it another week to get someone in for a couple of months, makes me feel they have something already lined up to the summer.”
But is Carragher right? SunSport have taken a look at the pros and cons of taking over at both clubs.
    Chelsea
Todd Boehly has already sacked managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham PotterCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Owner Todd Boehly’s arrival at Chelsea less than 12 months ago has sparked a chaotic period at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have axed Thomas Tuchel and Potter since the American assumed control of the Blues.
And after one game with assistant Bruno Saltor in charge, Lampard has now taken interim charge until the end of the campaign.
The managerial merry-go-round has coincided with a £600million spending spree.
But the swarm of new players has only seen Chelsea drop further and further down the Premier League table – where they now sit 11th.
It is evident Boehly has great ambition for the club given he has already sacked two coaches in his first season.
And that may well be a daunting prospect for any coach coming to West London.
Under Roman Abramovich, managers were expected to win trophies quickly or face the chop.
And Boehly has shown little sign of changing that outlook in his first year – averaging a new appointment less than every four months.
The transfer budget may also concern incoming managers as Chelsea have spent so much money in recent windows and are required to stay within Financial Fair Play regulations.
Players are also set to depart in the summer in order to comply with these rules.
And Chelsea have plans to build a new £1.5billion stadium which will need to be budgeted for over the coming years.
But it is a squad brimming with talent – with more than 30 players at the new head coach’s disposal.
The Blues also have a history of winning trophies.
Many of the squad still at the Bridge were there when Tuchel helped them win the Champions League in 2021.
And that winning mentality is something that Boehly has over his rivals across London.
Managers are also handed generous compensation packages when they depart Chelsea – with Potter receiving more than £20m – another plus for interested candidates.
    Tottenham
Daniel Levy is searching for a 12th managerial appointment since becoming chairmanCredit: Alamy
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was given little choice but to sack Conte following his outburst in the wake of their 3-3 draw with Southampton last month.
The Tottenham chief, who had to fork out over £15m to Conte, assumed control of the Lilywhites in 2001 and is now searching for a 12th permanent manager in 22 years.
It is a relatively high number of coaches, but Levy has shown he can give managers time with the likes of Martin Jol, Harry Redknapp and Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs’ downfall under Levy has been their lack of trophies – with the club still waiting for their first piece of silverware since 2008.
And they have also shown a reluctance to spend like some of their rivals.
Eight of Chelsea’s current squad were brought in for more money than Spurs’ club record transfer fee of £53.8m.
So it is evident any incoming manager will be working with a smaller budget than Chelsea.
And they may also lose their most important player in Harry Kane.
The Spurs talisman’s future remains up in the air as he enters the final 12 months of his contract – with Manchester United heavily linked with the England captain.
However, Tottenham fans’ expectations are – at least at the beginning – likely to be lower than that of the Chelsea faithful – who have seen their club win five Premier Leagues, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups and three League Cups over the past two decades.
Spurs supporters wish for a return to the attacking style Pochettino provided – after defensively-minded coaches in Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte.
So while success may be tougher to achieve than at Chelsea, the fans will almost certainly be more patient.
    Verdict
Ultimately there are major concerns for any manager taking both jobs.
Chelsea have big goals and demand success immediately, but are unable to guarantee the finances or time in order to achieve it.
    Read More on The Sun
Tottenham hold a more attainable level of perceived success – even if getting there may be a challenge – but funds, past failures and Kane’s potential departure could make it an almost impossible task.
When it comes to the likes of Enrique and Nagelsmann, it might just be easier to hold out until the Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain job comes up. More
