‘Me and Ange try to do the same stuff with how we play’, says Tottenham Women’s boss Robert Vilahamn

ROBERT VILAHAMN believes he and Ange Postecoglu have much more in common besides both being in charge of Tottenham teams. The Spurs women’s boss, 40, sees himself and the Australian as being brave about getting their teams to play good football.

Vilahamn’s Australian counterpart has brought the feelgood factor to the club.
Postecoglu’s Premier League aces are currently fourth and unbeaten after two draws and four wins.
And the team’s free-flowing attacking football has left Spurs fans drooling after the turbulent end to Antonio Conte’s two-year reign.
Vilhahamn, who was appointed in July after two years at the helm of Swedish side BK Hacken, hopes to cultivate more flair in his side’s style of play

His aces will face a stern WSL season-opening test from a team renowned for winning games in style.
They play title-holders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday with the Blues having won all seven of their previous league clashes .
Vilahamn said: “Tottenham want to play a style with the men’s team and the women’s team, academy.
“I think me and Ange try to do the same stuff with how to play.
    Most read in Football
“Not the same formation all the time but trying to be brave enough to play good, offensive football and in the long run, win games.
“The men’s team is already winning games. Hopefully we can have a good start, make some good results.
“But I also need to have respect against the top teams in the league so in the beginning it might be a mixture of the game model, and how to actually try to win against Chelsea.
“But in the long run you’re going to see a Tottenham that dictates games, presses high and wants to lean forward and try to score a lot of goals.
“We shouldn’t expect Tottenham to win the league this year, but we need to make sure we show the supporters, the board members and everyone that we play better football.”
Last year Tottenham entered the 2022-23 campaign with the hope of building on their fifth-place finish the season before.
While striker Rachel Williams departed for Manchester United, experienced talents including Ellie Brazil and ex-Blues star Drew Spence joined the side last summer
However they suffered some fitness blows last with Brazil sidelined by an ACL rupture last October and midfielder Ria Percival and forward Kit Graham out with knee injuries.
And they found themselves dragged into a relegation battle which they survived but one that led to the club parting company with former gaffer Rehanne Skinner.
For Vilahamn the aim this term is a top-six finish for the team who were seen as dark horses for a top four finish two seasons ago
He adds: “They (the club) don’t want to push me to win the league the first year.
“They want to push me to make sure we have this identity and of course they want to be better than last year and hopefully be in the top six of the table.
“But the most important thing is to show you guys we play Tottenham football.”
Spurs’ WSL survival was partly fuelled by the club making the bold move of signing Lionesses star Bethany England from Chelsea for a £250,000 fee in January .
The league’s most expensive British player repaid their faith by netting 12 goals in 12  top-flight appearances, helping them avoid relegation by finishing tenth.
This summer saw England given the captain’s armband before the start of the new season.
However her team will be without her services with the striker currently recovering from hip surgery.

Vilahamn added: “When you lose that kind of real superstar as a player you need to find something else – you cannot find a new Beth England.

The former Inter Milan midfielder is out of contract in North London next year – but has been linked with a departure sooner than expected.
Perisic had appeared as a substitute in each of Spurs’ opening five Premier League matches so far this season.
He joined the North London side from the Spanish giants in 2022 reuniting with former manager Antonio Conte.
The Croatian starl has since made 46 appearances and scored one goal.

But according to Sportske, Spurs are ready to let Perisic go for free to Hajduk Split.
The move is in place as the Lilywhites built good relations with the Croatian giants after snatching dream-signing 16-year-old Luka Vuskovic.
Perisic is a lifelong supporter of the Croatian side and played in the youth ranks for the club from 2000-2006.
The report claims Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has only verbally agreed to let the winger return to Split in January.

Even with his injury Hajduk “plan to bring him” to Split anyway – and the decision was easier for Levy as Ange Postecoglou’s squad are no longer counting on him this season.
Meanwhile, several Premier League clubs sent scouts to watch Vuskovic in action last season, including Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester City and Chelsea.
But according to the report, the youngster only wanted Spurs meaning Levy secured a £9.5million deal for Vuskovic.
The exchange for Vuskovic to North London will not take place until 2025.

In that time, Spurs made it to the Champions League final – in large part thanks to Moura bagging a hat-trick in the semi-final against Ajax – and League Cup final but lost on both occasions.
He penned an emotional exit from Spurs before the 31-year-old returned to boyhood club Sao Paolo.
And having won the Copa Sudamericana back in 2012 during his first spell there, he did not have to wait long to land his second trophy.
Last Sunday Moura added the Brazilian Cup to his cabinet of silverware as Sao Paolo defeated Flamengo 2-1 over a two-legged final.

Upon realising the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star was another who had won a trophy after leaving Spurs, some fans were left in hysterics online.

While a fourth reacted: “Really couldn’t make it up unbelievable 🤣.”
However, his spell at Sao Paolo could be over quicker than expected with his contract expiring at the start of 2024.
As quoted by ESPN, former Sao Paolo star Diego Lugano said after the final: “It’s going to depend a lot on the market he (Moura) has, too.
“United States is paying very well, window opens in January… São Paulo has to make an economic effort, there is no team that has a star without effort.
“What you can’t ask for is the effort of the player, Lucas is a São Paulo, he creates from the base, but he’s a professional, he’s 30 years old, there’s still a market.

Spurs need cover for ACL-injury victim Ivan Perisic and boss Ange Postecoglou knows Jota well after their successful spell at the Hoops.
Jota joined Al-Ittihad for £25million but they are only allowed eight overseas players in their squad and he has been cut.
His representatives have asked the Saudi giants to terminate his contract.
This means Jota, 24, will see his minutes limited to AFC Champions League or Club World Cup games.

But Jota saw this request rejected.
Al-Ittihad boss Nuno Espirito Santo wants to keep the Portuguese for the long-term, with the former Wolves and Spurs boss saying the issue was an “internal matter”.
Regardless, Jota will weigh up his options in January.
Jota has a strong working relationship with Postecoglou.

Upon being appointed Spurs manager, Jota said: “To a man who gave me a life opportunity, never lost belief in his philosophy and marked an era.
“I’ll forever be grateful for every moment. Best of luck gaffer!”
With Perisic potentially out for the season, a reunion between Jota and Postecoglou in north London may be on the cards to remedy the situation.
On the loss of Perisic ahead of the North London derby, the Aussie tactician said: “It’s disappointing for us because he’s been a really important part of what we’ve done so far.
“We don’t have a great experience in the group and he’s one that does have that level head and he’s been pretty significant in our games so far and in big moments.
“So like I said, disappointed for him and disappointed for us in terms of what we’re trying to build.
“He’s very strong willed and I’ve got no doubt he’ll come back for club and country and get back to the levels he showed before he got injured.”
Perisic had featured off the bench in all of Tottenham’s five Premier League games prior to the Arsenal clash.

Ange Postecoglou told me I could be a leader at Tottenham… then I turned up late for training the next day

SPURS action man Yves Bissouma cuts out danger as well as anyone in the Prem nowadays — and he is always first into training. And the Mali midfielder’s revival is down to a telling-off from his new boss Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs gaffer told Bissouma on the first day of pre-season he could be a leader — only for the star to turn up late the very next morning!
Bissouma said: “That day I had a little problem with my car. I had a flat tyre and there was a lot of traffic, too.
“It’s not an excuse, every player knows you have to be on time. I arrived late, he caught me. I said sorry and I told him why.
“He said, ‘If you want to be a leader or a big player you need to be on time and respect all the details of the club’.

“It’s about respect, that’s really important. We fixed it. I told him and the players I was sorry. And now I’m always the first at training.”
Bissouma is joint-top in the Premier League rankings for interceptions, along with Everton’s James Tarkowski.
The ex-Brighton star is also highly ranked in many other stats and is the heartbeat of Spurs’ early season success.
Bissouma said: “The gaffer said a lot of positive things about me. He had the confidence in me and showed this from the first day.

“He said, ‘Just be you and play the football we want to see and the football everyone wants to see because you have a lot you can do. I give you all my confidence and the rest is up to you’.”
The mood around Tottenham could hardly be more different to last season.
Former boss Antonio Conte, beset by personal tragedy off the pitch and problems on it, finally lost the plot after a 3-3 draw at Southampton in March and never returned to the Spurs dugout.
Bissouma was midway through a long spell out with an ankle fracture but Conte rarely picked him anyway, claiming he was not tactically astute enough.
Bissouma said: “If he said that then maybe it’s because of the way he wanted me to play — I didn’t play like that.
“I respect him because he’s a great coach so I wish him all the best but I have to follow my way and stay focused on what I have to do here.
“I think every season has its reality and last season wasn’t my season.
It’s about respect, that’s really important. We fixed it. I told him and the players I was sorry. And now I’m always the first at training.Yves Bissouma on being late for training
“You can see from the start, I had Covid in Korea. I came back and got injured. A lot of things happened.
“To be honest, I tried but I wasn’t myself. I wasn’t feeling confident.
“This season is completely different, I’m more confident. The coach has told me what he wants and talks with me.
“I have to do what I have to do to show him he can have even more confidence in me.”
Tottenham seem to have a collective self-belief if last week’s incredible stoppage-time turnaround against Sheffield United is anything to go by.
Sub Richarlison equalised in the 108th minute then teed up Dejan Kulusevski for a 110th-minute winner that sent the home fans into delirium
Bissouma said: “When I saw the added time I thought, ‘I know we can win.’
    ‘The stadium was on fire’
“I cannot lose this sort of game. I respect Sheffield United a lot but to lose when you create so many chances as we did, for me, is unacceptable.
“Then Richi comes on and . . . wow! A feeling like this is why we play football.
“We win it in the last minute and the stadium was on fire.”
The atmosphere should be red hot again today at the Emirates as the North London rivals — level on 13 points after five games — go head-to-head in the first real test of either team’s credentials this season.
Bissouma famously had a great match for Brighton in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal back in 2019 which all but ended the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four.
He added: “Of course I remember that day, it was good — especially as I played very good.
“I really like to play big games and any game against Arsenal is always a really big game.

Everton hope to renegotiate Dele Alli transfer deal with Tottenham with brave star working towards return

EVERTON will attempt to renegotiate the deal with Tottenham that brought Dele Alli to the club, says boss Sean Dyche.American firm 777 Partners are currently trying to take over the Toffees, who are enduring difficult times on and off the pitch.

Everton are yet to win in the Premier League this term while the financial situation at the club has left Dyche with a threadbare squad to choose from.
The potential return of England international Alli, 27, would no doubt provide a boost to the Blues’ attack after his recent struggles.
However, Dyche has admitted that director of football Kevin Thelwell will probably have to speak with Spurs to try and adjust the terms of the package that brought him to Goodison in January 2022 before he plays again.
Alli, who bravely opened up about being sexually abused as a child and his sleeping pill addiction this summer, has only made 13 appearances for Everton.

The Merseysiders will have to pay Spurs £10million once he plays 20 times – which could cause issues with money tight until the potential takeover is completed.
Alli recently suffered a setback in his attempted comeback from a groin operation when a stitch broke open in training seven weeks ago.
And offering an update on the whole situation, Dyche said the Everton chief will attempt to thrash things out with Spurs that will benefit everybody involved.
Speaking ahead of today’s trip to Brentford, he said: “He is not ready yet, when he’s fit and well I am sure Kev will go to Tottenham and say: ‘Right, how can we make this work for everyone?’

“It has never been at that stage so we have to wait for it.”
On his injury, Dyche added: “He was training with us, warming up and doing the drills, and he strikes the ball and is knocked back to square one. It was a real blow to him.
“He’d had an operation on his groin, they internally stitched it like an anchor inside his body, and one of them popped out having a shot and that was it.
“It was incredibly frustrating because he was feeling great. He is still a bit away yet, nowhere near training with us but is beginning to work with the sports science people.”
Alli checked himself into rehab after excessively drinking and consuming sleeping pills following his nightmare loan spell with Besiktas last season.
The former Mk Dons ace, who scored 51 top-flight goals in 181 matches during his six-and-a-half years at Spurs, said: “Now is the right time for me to tell people what’s been going on.
“It’s tough to talk about because it’s something I’ve hid for a long time. I’m scared to talk about it.
“When I came back from Turkey, I found out I needed an operation. I was in a bad place mentally and I decided to go to a modern-day rehab facility for mental health.
“They deal with addiction and trauma. I felt it was time for me.

But Spurs placed a clause in the forward’s contract to extend his stay with them for an additional 12 months whenever the choose.
And according to The Telegraph, the Tottenham brass plan to exercise that clause in the coming months.
It’s claimed, however, that they’re “so relaxed over” Son’s future that they might wait until the end of the season to do so.
The 12-month extension means Son will be at the club until 2026 at the earliest and gives them an insurance policy that they didn’t have when it came to former skipper Harry Kane.

Spurs were all but forced to sell their former talisman to Bayern Munich this summer as he entered the final year of his contract.
