Tottenham defenders quick out Dream Team’s blocks but are clean sheets sustainable under Ange-ball?

JUST six defenders have 20+ Dream Team points to their name right now.And three of them play for Tottenham: Micky van de Ven (£3.1m), Destiny Udogie (£2.6m) and Cristian Romero (£3.7m).
Spurs fans have every reason to feel optimistic for the season aheadCredit: DREAM TEAM
On a similar theme, Guglielmo Vicario (£3.1m) is currently the only goalkeeper to have breached the 20-point mark, thanks to his second consecutive clean sheet.
Spurs’ 2-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday has established them as the team of choice for gaffers who like to block-pick several defensive assets from the same squad.
Such a tactic would have worked wonders to date with Vicario (20 points), Van de Ven (20), Udogie (20) and Romero (25) combining for 85 points with a Carabao Cup fixture against Fulham still to play before Gameweek 3 concludes.
Dream Team bosses will now be wondering if such returns are sustainable – a worthy question.
Vicario has 20 points to show for his efforts so farCredit: GETTY
The first thing to note is that Ange Postecoglou’s side can perhaps count themselves a tad fortunate to have registered two clean sheets in their first three outings.
They’ve been excellent value for their goals going forward with James Maddison (£4.1m) acting as the centrepiece of a dynamic, entertaining unit but the Greek-born tactician’s approach risks conceding more than a fair share of chances.
For example, Manchester United registered 22 shots against Spurs in north London but poor finishing meant the hosts ultimate kept their sheet clean in Gameweek 2.
The stats boffins reckon Spurs have allowed their opponents over five expected goals (xG) this season, meaning their actual tally of two conceded goals is a somewhat fortunate outcome.
    Most read in Football
Of course, Vicario’s 13 saves have been a factor in his side outperforming the xG figures in this regard but they have relied upon their opponents’ wastefulness as well – something that can’t be depended upon consistently.
However, while clean sheets are important they are not the only factor to consider when analysing defenders through the lens of Dream Team.
Van de Ven has earned bonus points in every fixture so far while Udogie has been a prominent threat going forward – the 20-year-old provided the assist for Dejan Kulusevski’s (£3m) goal against the Cherries.
    The numbers don’t lieCredit: GETTY
Spurs’ current defensive record may not be sustainable but their attacking output should be and if Udogie – who was substituted late on as a precaution at the weekend – continues his promising start to the campaign then he will tick over with attacking returns.
The former Udinese left-back is excellent value at £2.6m right now.
As for Romero, he has a goal to his name already in 2023/24 and his combative style helped him secure two additional points on Saturday through his tally of five tackles.
However, the World Cup winner’s natural aggressiveness can cause headaches for Dream Team bosses.
Even when he’s at his best, the Argentine centre-back feels permanently on the cusp of a yellow (or red) card.
Saying that, only Joachim Andersen (£2.9m) has produced more points than Romero among Dream Team defenders this season.

While the long-term viability of Spurs’ defence is still to be decided, there can be little doubt that now is a great time to back Postecoglou’s troops.
They face Burnley in Gameweek 4 and then host Sheffield United in Gameweek 5.

Bayern shared snaps of Kane wearing a khaki Lederhosen and grey jacket to their official website and Instagram page on Tuesday.

Bayern’s new No.9 has found the back of the net three times in three appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s side, scoring once in their season opener against Werder Bremen and bagging a brace against Augsburg on Sunday.
Kane took to Twitter on Sunday night to say: “A great game today. Obviously to score two goals in front of new fans was a special feeling.
“So, yeah, I’m feeling good. Lots of improvement to come, but to start the season with two wins is, obviously, a really great start.”
Kane and his Bayern team-mates will be back in action on Saturday evening, travelling to Borussia Park to take on Borussia Monchengladbach.

Tottenham ‘desperately looking to offload FIVE flops including Eric Dier before this week’s transfer deadline’

TOTTENHAM are desperately looking to offload FIVE players before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline. Eric Dier, Sergio Reguilon, Davinson Sanchez, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could all be shown the exit door by the end of the week, report the Daily Mail.

England defender Dier has reportedly told the club he wants to see out his contract which ends next year and leave as a free agent.
Dier joined Spurs back in 2014 from Sporting for £4million and has made a staggering 270 appearances for the club.
However, the 29-year-old has since fallen down the pecking order under Agne Postecoglou due to the arrival of Micky van der Ven.
The Dutchman, 22, joined the Lilywhites from Wolfsburg in a £43m deal and has signed a six-year deal.

Premier League rivals Fulham have made an enquiry for Dier ahead of Friday’s deadline.
Meanwhile, Paris Saint-German are creeping up again to reignite their interest in midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
This is the third transfer window the French champions have asked about the 26-year-old as they consider another attempt to snatch the former French international.
Club-record signing Ndombele has had loan spells at Lyon and Napoli while being at Spurs.

The North London club are keen to offload more players from their squad.
Left-back Reguilion is on the cards for a departure amid alleged interest from Fulham, Nottingham Forest and to a lesser degree Manchester United.
Forest and Fulham again have also had their eyes on centre-back Sanchez as well as French giants Monaco.
Lo Celso’s situation at Spurs has attracted Italian side Napoli to try and sign the Argentine on loan with an option to buy.

Ange Postecoglou says he only picks ‘winners’ when asked if Richarlison will play in Carabao Cup to break goal-drought

ANGE POSTECOGLOU will only pick Richarlison at Fulham on Tuesday for the right reasons — not just  to give his goal-shy ace a pick-me-up.The straight-talking Aussie says he only selects “winners” for  Tottenham and is not one for sentimental decisions.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou won’t start Richarlison just to help him scoreCredit: Reuters
Postecoglou hauled Richarlison off an hour into Spurs’ 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday after he missed two sitters.
And asked if he would start the 26-year-old in the upcoming Carabao Cup tie to help him bag his first goal of the season, Postecoglou replied: “No, I pick teams I think will win games.
“I am not going to put him in to try and help him in some individual  pursuit.
“I will put Richy in the team if I think we can win with him in, not because I am trying to get him into a certain space.”

Spurs face a Fulham side bossed by Marco Silva, the man who gave  Richarlison his big break in English football by signing him when he was Watford manager back in 2017.
Despite his tough start to the season,  Silva says the forward has what it takes to replace Harry Kane.
Richarlison has played more games under Silva — who also signed him from the Hornets  for £40million when he became Everton chief — than any other boss, scoring 26 goals in 82 matches for the Portuguese tactician.
Silva said: “Richarlison is a very good player but it is going to be tough for him.

“He is a good lad and a really hard worker.  He has worked really hard to achieve what he has and get to this level. I know because I was responsible for bringing him to England and to another club in England.
“To be at Tottenham and No 9 for his national team, I know he has the talent to get to that level.”
Postecoglou says he has not had much luck in Cup draws but is looking  forward to travelling across London.
He said: “I love winning. I don’t care what it is. I love winning and the players know that.
“I don’t care if it is a cup, playing in the car park or on a rooftop.
“I haven’t had great luck with draws in my career. I expect them to be challenging.

Man Utd consider shock transfer for Tottenham outcast Hojbjerg but fans fume ‘that’s enough’ as they clock Ten Hag link

According to The Telegraph, United are keen on signing Hojbjerg from Tottenham and the North London club have offered them the chance to open talks.
The Danish international looked as if he was going to be on his way to Atletico Madrid earlier in the window after Spurs accepted a £30million bid.
But the deal collapsed after Hojbjerg was unable to agree personal terms with the Spaniards.
Now it’s Ten Hag who is after the 28-year-old as he looks to add depth to his midfield which has already taken a hit through the injury of Mason Mount.

A third commented: “I can’t go through the pain of another ten Hag Alumni!”
One other fan simply pleaded that it had to stop, posting: “Please, that’s enough.”
It is unknown whether United will progress talks with Tottenham over the deal, but Ten Hag is said to be keen on bringing in a midfielder before the window shuts on Friday.
Hojbjerg may not be the only Spurs player to make the move to Old Trafford in the remaining days of the window either.
Following the injury to Luke Shaw, reports are suggesting that United are considering a move for Spurs full-back Sergio Reguilon. More

It was another impressive display that saw Postecoglou’s Spurs team adapt effectively to their new manager’s philosophy.
Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro both impressed in the inverted full-back role, a position that Gary Neville criticised last week.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Gary Neville said: “I think these coaches have taken a Pep Guardiola idea and made it quite ineffective. There is no doubt there… It is a balance between risk and reward but Spurs need to adapt.”
Neville’s analysis came after he consistently criticised Spurs’ right-back Porro throughout Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

Postecoglou was clearly aware of the comments when he sat down with TNT Sports pundits Joe Cole and Peter Crouch in the studio.

To which Postecoglou cheekily replied: “Nah, nah, nah, I’m just copying Pep mate.”

Spurs legend Darren Anderton impressed with Aussie chief Ange Postecoglou – and sees Terry Venables comparison

ANGE POSTECOGLOU’S fatherly approach to revitalised Yves Bissouma is reminding Darren Anderton of his own experience working with Terry Venables.Bissouma has looked like a man reborn this season compared to his injury-hit nightmare of a campaign under Antonio Conte last term.
Yves Bissouma has been sensational so far under Ange PostecoglouCredit: Getty
Abrasive and defensively-minded Conte never really took to the £25million signing from Brighton, making the Malian play safe when he did select him.
But Postecoglou – whom Bissouma described as like “a dad” when speaking to SunSport in Perth this summer – has encouraged the midfielder to use his creative instincts.
Bissouma had more touches than any other player in the Premier League during the opening weekend and was sensational in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Manchester United.
Spurs legend Anderton sees similarities to his own difficult early days when he first arrived from Portsmouth in 1992, only for man-manager expert Venables to get the best out of him.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
The 51-year-old told SunSport: “Terry was like a second dad to me.
“I struggled when I first came to the club. He made me believe that it was OK.
“I came off in one game and the game was still going on, but he came into the changing room and had a chat with me. He put his arm around me and told me it was going to be all right. To this day, I’ll always remember it.

“I read what Bissouma said about Ange being like a dad and that was really good to hear.

“Especially for a player who has been there for a year and not played enough. He’s had an injury, he’s having a tough time. He was probably excited to come and then was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’
“Now he has that belief and you see it in the first two performances. It’s amazing to see.”
Postecoglou’s friendly manner was summed up by new signing Micky van de Ven this week who described the ex-Celtic chief as “a sweet and lovely guy”.
The Aussie is still capable of giving the hairdryer treatment though, as was proven at half-time against West Ham and Shakhtar Donetsk in pre-season.
But overall his approach by all accounts seems to be much more cordial than that of predecessors Conte and Jose Mourinho.
Anderton, watching on TV from his home in California, can tell a difference.
He observed: “As a footballer, you can sense when you watch games that things aren’t quite right and people aren’t happy. Fans do as well. You can tell by body language.
“The start they’ve had under Ange has been really positive. Players have a new lease of life and are now playing well.
“Players are not all the same. We’re all young men who are all very talented and have come from being the best from wherever we were from growing up.
“You put them in the dressing room and have to somehow bring it all together. That’s the most difficult part of being a manager.
“From what I hear from the club and from listening to some of the players speak, it seems Ange has that (ability).
“That’s really refreshing, after watching what’s happened over the last few years where the managers have been more, ‘It’s my way or the highway’. It’s almost been a certain form of bullying at times.”
Ex-England star Anderton said he was bored watching Conte’s Spurs but now is excited to get up early to watch his beloved Spurs play under progressive Postecoglou.
Cherries have picked well in AndoniDARREN ANDERTON reckons old club Bournemouth will steer clear of danger this year – even if the sacking of Gary O’Neil was “unfair”.
O’Neil, who has since taken over at Wolves, was replaced by Andoni Iraola.
It was a shock appointment but Anderton rates the Spaniard highly.
The 51-year-old, who ended his 18-year career at Bournemouth in 2008 and still owns a house in the area, told SunSport: “The decision was pretty unfair on Gary O’Neil. I thought he did a great job and really pleased for him that he’s now got a job at Wolves.
“The new owners have taken the opportunity to get a top, top manager, in my opinion, which might take time which you don’t get in the Premier League.
“I thought they played well in the first two games. It’s early days.
“I don’t think Bournemouth will be in relegation danger. They’ll be OK and he’s a manager who can take the club forward.”

Saturday’s lunchtime clash at Bournemouth, another of Anderton’s old sides, will kick off at 5.30am on the west coast.
Yet it will be no chore to tune in as Postecoglou puts together the most attacking Spurs side since the one Anderton played in under Ossie Ardiles.
That side in the early 90s involved a quintet dubbed the ‘famous five’ of Teddy Sheringham, Jurgen Klinsmann, Nicky Barmby, Ilie Dumitrescu and Anderton.
He recalled: “Defensively we weren’t good enough but we were very close to being a very good team.
“We had Teddy and Jurgen Klinsmann up front, Nicky Barmby in behind, Ilie Dumitrescu out left, me on the right. But then on top of that we had full-backs Ossie wanted to bomb on as well!
“It literally was Sol, Stuart Nethercott and Colin Calderwood who would sit there as a central midfielder holding the fort.
“I was a team player, I would run up and down all day and help. But, to be fair, Ilie Dumitrescu on the other side was not so willing to do that sort of thing!
“The balance wasn’t right. The balance in this team will be better. They will be better defensively, although still a little bit open like we saw in the Brentford game.
“But we’re going to dominate games and be entertaining to watch and that’s what you want.”
Postecoglou’s revolution is, of course, happening without Harry Kane who was sold to Bayern Munich for £104million.
Richarlison is still to score this term in the England man’s absence, but Spurs have not signed a new forward yet despite interest in Gift Orban and Brennan Johnson.
Anderton added: “Richarlison will come good and he will score goals.
“I like him as a player, he would be a pain to play against. It’s not the be all and end all to see a top, top striker come in.
“I believe there’s a really good chance of us getting back into the Champions League again.
“We’re only two games in, it will only get better. That’s the exciting part.
“Harry has gone to Germany and I’m chuffed for him, he’s going to play in the Champions League and win the Bundesliga and score tons of goals.
    Read More on The Sun
“But as a Tottenham boy he obviously loves the club. I wonder how he’ll feel watching that style of football at the moment.
“I’m sure he’s happy where he is but I bet he wishes this style of football had been played the last four years.” More

Pochettino and Kane enjoyed success together at Spurs, but he’s now embarked on a new journey in the dugout at Chelsea this season.
The 51-year-old has a big job on his hands, tasked with turning around a team who finished 12th in the Premier League last term.
But when speaking in a recent interview with The Athletic, Pochettino took the opportunity to poke fun at the England captain.
In a hilarious move, the Blues boss pulled out his phone and told Shearer that he wanted to record a quick video message for Kane.

Of course, Pochettino was referencing that Shearer’s goalscoring record is now safe with Kane moving to Bayern Munich.

Kane was hot on his heels and closing in fast after reaching 213 in 320 appearances with Spurs.
But following his £100m move to Bayern, many believe that he may never get the chance to close that 47-goal gap and surpass Shearer’s tally.
Kane enjoyed a scoring start on his Bundesliga debut last week for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Before leaving Spurs this summer, Kane ominously hinted that he still had plenty of time left to snatch the record from the Match of the Day pundit.
It was reported that Chelsea could reunite Pochettino with Kane, but Daniel Levy was not interested in selling his frontman to a Premier League rival. More
