I’m an Arsenal legend who was head of Gunners academy that let Harry Kane go to Tottenham – the buck stops with me

ARSENAL legend Liam Brady has admitted that it was his decision that led Harry Kane to being released from Arsenal’s academy aged eight. The England captain would go on to play for Sunday League side Ridgeway Rovers before being picked up by Spurs and the rest is history.

Despite a hugely successful spell as Arsenal’s academy manager, Harry Kane left the Arsenal academy under Brady’s watchCredit: Alamy
In an interview with The Daily Mail, Brady, 67, says the buck for the decision to release Kane stops with him.
Brady was Arsenal’s academy manager between 1996 and 2014 after spells in charge of Celtic and Brighton.
The former Ireland international said it was a job he was incredibly passionate about and “the most rewarding part after my playing days.”
He would nurture talents such as Ashley Cole, Jack Wilshere and Bukayo Saka to come through the Hale End academy but Brady knows that Kane was the one that got away.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
On the talents of Cole and Wilshere, he said: “With Ashley, in my opinion he became the best left back in Europe. I’m sorry Arsenal fans feel so indifferent about him.
“I was sad about how it went for Jack Wilshere with injuries because, in my opinion, he was too brave for his own good. If it was a 50-50 with Graeme Souness, he would have it. Jack went into every tackle.”
When asked about Kane, Brady said: “I didn’t have anything to do with the decision, but the buck stops with me. That’s football.’ Win some, lose some. It is a brutal, brilliant, ludicrous game.”
Kane would go on to join Spurs where he rose through the academy to become the club’s all-time highest goalscorer and captain of the England national team.

With Arsenal in the market for a striker this January and Ivan Toney top of the list, it’s fascinating to imagine what an alternative history would have looked like if Kane did not leave Arsenal’s academy.
Instead, he’s flourishing at Bayern Munich with 12 goals and five assists in nine appearances and scoring goals from his own half following his £100million transfer.
On Arsenal’s chances of winning the title this year, Brady said: “I like the way Mikel Arteta has them playing. But it gives me a nervous breakdown when they play in their own box.”
Unfortunately for The Gunners however, he can’t see past Manchester City for the title: “Anybody that knows anything about football would say Manchester City. I think we’re all hoping as fans, Arsenal fans, Liverpool fans, that they might just take their eye off the ball this season. But…” More

Five clubs Dele Alli could transfer to as Everton look to renegotiate Tottenham deal to avoid £10million payment

EVERTON are looking to renegotiate their £10million fee for Dele Alli with Tottenham as Sean Dyche prepares to reintegrate the midfielder back into his side.A clause will kick in after Dele makes 20 appearances for The Toffees and he is currently on 13.

Earlier this summer, Dele Alli sat down with Gary Neville to bravely open up about his childhood trauma which caused an addiction to sleeping pills while he was playing.
After spending this summer in rehab, he has been looking to make a return to the Everton first team, but that was thrown off track by a groin injury that required surgery last month.
It’s understood that Everton would like Tottenham to waive or bring down the £10m fee to allow Dyche to help the player find his feet again – without the financial pressure that will build with every appearance.
Everton are already facing a points penalty for financial fair play breaches so will do what they can to avoid paying the £10m sum to Spurs.

Steven Gerrard has shown that he is keen to bring British players over to the Saudi league and already raided Everton for Demarai Gray this summer.
A high-profile player like Dele would be attractive to Saudi owners and he would no doubt be well renumerated were he to make the move.

He would also be linking up with Jordan Henderson, who he has experience of working with in England squads of the past.

A move to the MLS could provide a safe landing spot for Dele to regain his form.
David Beckham could look to add an English player to his Inter Miami side and the tenacity and guile of Dele would be an interesting prospect.
LA Galazy is another option and would allow him to move closer to his girlfriend Cindy Kimberley.
    MK Dons

Dele tore up League One as a youngster for MK Dons before making his big move to Tottenham Hotspur.
A product of the Dons academy, he is Milton Keynes’ most famous boy-done-good and a return would certainly be a romantic one.
But with The Dons 12th in League Two, a move there certainly seems below his level.
    Rangers
Fellow former Spurs star Jermain Defoe enjoyed a late career renaissance when he made the trip north of the border and there is no reason why Dele couldn’t do the same.
New manager Philippe Clement is currently experiencing an injury crisis and the injection of Dele could give the team a much needed fillip.
Former team-mate Joe Hart has also seen his career go from strength to strength at Celtic so the example is there for Dele to follow.
    Spurs?
A move to Spurs would only continue the good vibes Spurs are experiencing under PostecoglouCredit: AFP
With the complicated nature of Dele’s transfer to Everton it has been speculated in the past that he could be sent back to Spurs.
This is not a realistic possibility as Dele’s transfer to Everton is permanent despite rumours to the contrary.
    Read More on The Sun
But if Everton were to let Dele go, there is a scenario where he might at least train with his former club for fitness.
His style of play when he’s in his pomp is similar to players Ange Postecoglou has preferred in the past and most Spurs fans would certainly be up for a romantic reunion. More

Everton ‘trying to renegotiate Dele Alli transfer with Tottenham’ with £10m bonus payment nearly due

EVERTON are trying to renegotiate the deal they struck with Tottenham for Dele Alli, according to reports. The 27-year-old joined the Toffees in January 2022 but has featured just 13 times for the Merseyside club.

And now they are looking to change the terms of the complex transfer they agreed.
Everton completed a deal that involved several performance-related clauses.
Dele was signed on an initial free transfer, but the deal could reach as high as £30million.
Tottenham are set to receive £10m when Alli plays his 20th game for Everton, although he has not featured for the Premier League side since August 2022.

But, as Alli prepares to return from injury in the near-future, manager Sean Dyche has revealed the club have opened discussions with Tottenham about the make-up of the original deal.
He said: “[Director of football Kevin Thelwell] has had a couple of phone calls, just lightly in the background. ‘Look, where do you see it?’
“But nothing has changed at the moment.”
Alli spent some of last season on loan at Besiktas but struggled to re-discover his form in Turkey.

Back in July, he bravely opened up about being sexually abused as a child.
He also revealed he went to rehab for six weeks after suffering an addiction to sleeping pills.
Meanwhile, Everton’s financial crisis could see them deducted 12 points.
The Premier League has called for the punishment after the club recorded heavy financial losses over the past three years.
The Telegraph claims the Toffees are down £371.8million over that time period.
The Prem’s permitted amount is £105m – less than a third of Everton’s losses.

The North Londoners have been flying high this season and are top of the table thanks to a ten-match unbeaten streak, which has seen them win a staggering eight times along the way.
The West Londoners, on the other hand, have been struggling significantly with only three wins out of ten league matches, of which they have lost four.
That has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s side left languishing in 11th place.
However, Merson still doesn’t believe Tottenham can beat Chelsea next week.

During his latest Sky Sports appearance, the pundit stated Ange Postecoglou’s side will “have a go” and that will suit the visitors as it will allow them to find space for the counter-attack.
Merson told the panel: “Chelsea fans would rather play them teams [who come at them].
“Teams that come to Chelsea and sit back, it’s a struggle. I go and watch myself. Ten behind the ball.
“I am more confident about going to Tottenham on Monday than playing Brentford at home. I am.

I thought I was signing for Arsenal or Tottenham when I heard transfer offer had been accepted – but I ended up at Luton

LUTON legend Paul Elliott thought he was joining Arsenal or Tottenham before moving to Kenilworth Road.Elliott stood out in the 1980s playing for Charlton and turned a lot of heads during a time that saw the Addicks dealing with severe financial difficulties.
Paul Elliott joined Luton in 1983 after shining bright with Charlton
That meant the club had to sell some of their best and most valuable players in 1983.
Among them was their star centre-back, who was linked with a move to the Gunners at the time.
And the then 19-year-old was informed by Charlton manager Lennie Lawrence that a deal had been struck with a club from the First Division.
Lawrence drove the defender to meet his new employers and he thought it would be Arsenal due to the intense speculation.

The youngster also reckoned he could be moving to Tottenham as his manager drove towards north London.
But, upon their arrival, Lawrence finally spilled the beans and revealed he will be playing for Luton.
The now 59-year-old wasn’t disappointed as a discussion with then Hatters boss David Pleat convinced him this was the right move.
Pleat really believed in him and promised he would be in his starting line-up despite his young age.

Elliott told Luton Today: “The club hit financial problems and went into receivership.
“They sold Paul Walsh the year before and I remember there were lots of rumours that Arsenal were very interested and had made a bid. I remember reading the Evening Standard that Arsenal were going to make an offer for Elliott, they really want Elliott.
“When the deal was done, I remember the day I was leaving, Lennie said to me, ‘Big man, go home and put on your best suit, we’re going to sell you. Meet me back at the Valley, I’m going to take you to meet the manager.’
“He didn’t tell me who the manager was, so we drove up and he’s driving north London, A6, towards the Cockfosters Hotel and I was thinking it’s either got to [be] Arsenal or Tottenham. Then he’s pulled up at the West Lodge Hotel and I was thinking, it’s got to be Arsenal!

Elliot thought he was joining Arsenal or Tottenham before his move to Luton
“He turned round and said, ‘There’s a great manager inside, a really progressive club,’ and I’m just thinking, just tell me, and he said, ‘It’s David Pleat from Luton Town.’
“I thought, oh, right, okay, I went into the hotel, and let’s just say I had 15 minutes with David Pleat and I knew that Luton was going to be a great move for me.
“He said, ‘Listen Paul, you’re top class, you’re an outstanding youngster. You’re 18 years of age, played over 80 games in the first team, you’ve got a lot of game time, you’re an outstanding prospect, we’ve just got promoted from the Second Division, you’re going straight into the first team, you’re good enough to play in the First Division, you’re going to be a great player for Luton Town and for me, do you want to come?’
“I remember saying, ‘Of course I want to come,’ and it ended up being a fabulous move. David is a great man, a great friend, we’ve always been close, even after my time at Luton.”
Elliott became a Luton legend with two goals in 39 appearances across a two-year stint before moving to Aston Villa and later Pisa, Celtic and Chelsea. More

If there are no talks with the LaLiga giants by Christmas, he could be available as early as the January window.
Kroos, 33, wants to continue playing in the Champions League, and his representatives will sound out Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and both Manchester clubs.
He previously worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, and champions City lost an experienced head when Ilkay Gundogan left last summer.
