Man Utd terminate Sergio Reguilon’s loan transfer from Tottenham after just 12 games

SERGIO REGUILON has returned to Tottenham after having his loan spell at Manchester United cut. United signed for full-back in the summer on an initial 12-month deal to help cover their backline.

But he never managed to make a consistent breakthrough in Erik ten Hag’s line up with just seven starts.
And following only 12 games in total, Reguilon will return to parent club Spurs.
According to The Athletic, United triggered a break clause in the contract that allowed them to terminate the loan move.
Reguilon was initially signed to provide back up to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

But Shaw has returned from injury and Malacia is also nearing full fitness.
And with United out of Europe and the Carabao Cup, the decision was made to send Reguilon back to Spurs as fixtures have thinned.
Ten Hag in December confirmed that the 27-year-old Spaniard did have a break clause in his loan contract.
He said: “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.”

Spurs currently have Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies occupying their left-back position.
And Udogie – signed from Udinese in 2022 for £18million – has been one of manager Ange Postecoglou’s finest performers this season.

His form saw Spurs reward him with a bumper new six-and-a-half-year deal in December.
Udogie said: “I’m really happy because I think to be here at this club is a big joy for me, so I’m really happy for this opportunity and it’s a pleasure.
“From the first day I came here, I’ve felt at home with the players, the coaching staff and the club. I feel so welcome and I’m happy to be here.” More

Despite a host of injuries across his squad, Ange Postecoglou’s side go into 2024 sitting fifth in the table with 39 points and just three behind leaders Liverpool.
However, they are set to lose captain and top scorer Son Heung-min to Asia Cup duties for a number of weeks this month.
And they suffered yet another injury blow after striker Alejo Veliz was spotted leaving the Tottenham Stadium on crutches yesterday.
The 20-year-old Argentina U20 international joined Spurs in a £12million transfer from Rosario Central in August.

Postecoglou has so far only used him sparingly while he settles into life in England.
But the hotshot, who got his first goal for the club in last week’s defeat at Brighton, looked set for his big opportunity over the coming matches due to the absence of Son.
But any hopes he had of making an impact appear to have been dashed after Veliz was helped off the pitch in tears by medical staff during the closing stages against Bournemouth.
He was in pain within minutes after coming on as a substitute and looked to be visibly distressed as medics and team-mate Richarlison helped him off the pitch.

The ace was then spotted wearing a boot on his right foot after the game – and he is not the only new casualty for Postecoglou.
Senegal star Pape Matar Sarr’s Afcon dream is in tatters after he was also forced off through injury.
And with the likes of James Maddison and Cristian Romero among the long-term casualties, Spurs fans were cursing their luck.
“We can’t catch a break ffs,” wrote one on X.
Another said: “We’re cursed, there’s no other explanation at this point. It’s a player a game.”
While third added: “Football can be so cruel, this would have been his opportunity.”
Postecoglou said afterwards: “Alejo, it’s hard to say. He was in a lot of pain.
“I don’t know the extent of it, obviously it’s disappointing for him as well. We’ll see what the outcome is.
“Sonny leaves today (for the Asia Cup with South Korea) with Biss (Yves Bissouma, to the AFCON with Mali), so, more challenges for us, but nothing we haven’t faced before.

“Pape felt his hamstring. He’s obviously very disappointed because he’s going away with his national team, and he doesn’t want to miss out on that.
“We’re hoping it’s nothing too serious that would keep him out for the whole bit.” More

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou fired Celtic transfer warning: Hands off Matt O’Riley

NEIL LENNON has pleaded with Ange Postecoglou to stay away from Celtic’s Matt O’Riley this month. The Spurs boss brought the Dane to Parkhead in January 2022 from MK Dons for £1.5million.

Neil Lennon is a big fan of the midfielderCredit: Kenneth Ramsay
Now the playmaker is rated in the £25m bracket but former Hoops boss Lenny hopes he’s not a Tottenham target.
He told Ladbrokes Fanzone: “I think Ange will want to bring some strength in depth in next month, whether that’s a couple of loans or them spending more money.
“His recruitment has been brilliant up to this point.
“The players he’s brought in have been great — Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, they’re top quality players who have all impressed.

“He missed a couple of them in that dip, there’s no question about that — but I just want him to stay away from Matt O’Riley for the time being, please and thank you very much!”
Lennon has been impressed at the Aussie’s transition from the Hoops to Spurs.
He said: “The job Ange did at Celtic was great.
“The fans loved his style of play, the all-out attack, the rotations — and you can see that style being implemented at Tottenham as well.

“It’s never dull, put it that way! And I think he’s building something there to make Spurs real contenders for the top four on a regular basis.
“He’s having a fabulous year, and I’m delighted for him because he’s a great guy.
“I always tune in to watch because you just can’t take your eyes off his team!
“Being the first Spurs boss in ten years not to have Harry Kane available to him, that’s a huge loss of goals he’s had to account for.
“But I think he’s recruited well.”
O’Riley has attracted links to West Ham and Inter Milan – with the Serie A giants said to be keen on a loan and permanent deal in the summer.
But Lennon has already warned the Hoops they should be staving off interest in January and holding out for £30m in the summer.
He said: “Under Brendan he’s scoring a lot of goals, and creating so many opportunities for the team.
The midfielder required treatment for a nose bleed throughout the second half of the Old Firm clashCredit: Willie Vass

“He’s always a threat, and he’s got a real knack of making those late runs into the box, undetected.
“He’s a fantastic talent — and he’s been a brilliant bit of business for the club.
“The priority, for the club, is to keep hold of him. Particularly in January.
“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of offers coming in for him — but I think the club are in a position to stay strong in the January window.
“I do think that Brendan will want to trim the squad in other areas. But I’m sure O’Riley will stay to the end of the season.
“At least that’s what I’m hoping for, anyway!
“But you can’t stop the progress, so I would imagine selling him will be something that Celtic will look at in the summer.
“He’s proven himself at the highest level, in the Champions League.
“He’s been the best player in Scotland this season — so you’re looking at £25-30m for him, at least.”
He added: “I think he’s a top, top player and I believe he could play at a very high level in the Premier League.

Viewers were quick to point out the Warrington wonderboy is a Manchester United fan.
But his relaxed look showed his mind was more on his own remarkable achievement the previous day than the Red Devils’ latest misfortune.
Soon after United slumped 2-1 at Nottingham Forest, Little crushed his idol and four-time world title winner Raymond van Barneveld 4-1.
And while Barney took defeat like a “gentleman” his fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag is under far more strain – with his Red Devils’ boss job reportedly under threat.

Littler is racking up nicknames faster than shot-shy United score goals – with Luke the Nuke and the Kebab Kid two of the newest as he soars to second favourite for the PDC crown behind Michael van Gerwen.
Arsenal’s England aces Aaron Ramsdale and Declan Rice posed with him before last Thursday’s shock 2-0 home loss against West Ham.
And there was an excited murmur when Littler was spotted by Sky Sports cameras as well as supporters at Tottenham on New Year’s Eve.
Fans online joked he could be turned off United and onto Spurs.

When some pointed out he was not a Spurs supporter, they attracted comments like: “He will be” and “he will now”.
Tottenham YouTuber Chris Cowlin grabbed a selfie “with the man of the moment Luke Littler”.
But after sharing the snap Cowlin himself added: “I’ve been told – he DOESN’T support Spurs. He is James Maddison’s guest.”
Littler saw Pape Matar Sarr drill Tottenham in front early on.
But the Londoners will enter 2024 in fifth place whatever the result against the Cherries.
In contrast, Littler’s life could change spectacularly in the next few days – as he eyes the world title and a £500,000 jackpot.
After beating Barney he said: “I fancy myself. I do fancy myself.
“Barney said to me at the end, ‘you can go all the way. I hope you go all the way’. I said: ‘Thank you’. He is a true gentlemen.” More

Lloris has not played for the club since April after being exiled by new manager Ange Postecoglou.
However, after failing to secure a summer transfer, he has remained with Spurs and is part of their Premier League squad.
The 37-year-old is now finally on the verge of sealing a move away from North London, though.
Fabrizio Romano reports that a verbal agreement is now in place between all parties for Lloris to join LAFC.

He will sign a one-year deal with an option to extend, the report adds, with the transfer set to be finalised soon.

But he has not featured at all this season following the signing of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli in June.
He had options to leave in the summer but snubbed interest from Lazio, Newcastle, former club Nice and Saudi Arabia.
Yet Lloris looks close to ending his stay in North London by moving Stateside to LAFC, the club where former Spurs team-mate Gareth Bale finished his career.
Lloris’s deal is up in the summer but him moving now would be a boost to Tottenham’s wage kitty as he is on more than £100,000 a week.

He racked up a whopping 447 appearances for Spurs although sadly his last one was the infamous 6-1 defeat at Newcastle in April, when he came off injured at half-time having shipped five goals.
Injury-hit Spurs will lose captain Son Heung-min to the Asian Cup next month as well as midfielders Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr to the African Cup of Nations.
Yet more players could still leave with Eric Dier regularly overlooked by boss Ange Postecoglou, who has prioritised signing a new centre-back in January.
Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg could also leave having fallen down the pecking order under Postecoglou, but would likely be replaced.

Postecoglou recently heaped praise upon Lloris, saying: “[His future] is not my decision. It’s a decision for Hugo and the club. I don’t have that power and don’t want that power.
“Hugo is a member of this squad and how he trains every day is important to me. If he wasn’t then I’d be dealing with it but I haven’t had to, he has been absolutely first-class.
“As a manager, I don’t take that for granted because that could be a problem for me. For most managers, it is the ones who aren’t playing who give you the biggest headaches. It’s his decision to make.”

However, with star man Son Heung-min set to temporarily leave Spurs in January to represent South Korea at the Asia Cup, the forward has been recalled by Ange Postecoglou.
Son will miss up to six Tottenham games, so Scarlett could step in to replace him if needed.

Scarlett was limited to just 13 appearances off the bench at Ipswich, totalling 190 minutes.

Discussing his loan spell, Postecoglou said: “Good to get Dane back and obviously the loan didn’t work out for him at Ipswich, which is disappointing for him and disappointing for us because the reason we sent him out on loan was to get some game-time, rhythm and develop.
“It hasn’t worked out that way so made sense to bring him back.
“He is back training with us and becomes available from January 1st again.

But Spurs have leapt to the front of the queue as they fancy a deal similar to the one which brought Destiny Udogie to North London 18 months ago.
