Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs offload record transfer signings.. no wonder Europe talks of ‘stupid English money’

AFTER Arsenal agreed to farm out Nicolas Pepe on loan to Nice, an extraordinary pattern of transfer activity was completed this summer. It meant that Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and the Gunners have all allowed their club-record signings — who cost a combined £313.5million — to depart without a single penny being recouped in transfer fees.

There is little surprise that those four members of England’s ‘Big Six’ have been left trailing in the wake of Manchester City and Liverpool in recent seasons, with such haphazard and shambolic recruitment.
And no wonder that clubs on the continent talk of ‘stupid English money’, knowing they can fleece filthy-rich Premier League sides in the market.
First, United’s £89m man Paul Pogba was allowed to leave Old Trafford for Juventus on a free — for a second time — after a largely miserable six-year spell for the French World Cup winner.
Then Chelsea sent £97.5m Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan, after a single season at Stamford Bridge, for a modest loan fee of £7m — so desperate was Thomas Tuchel to get the big Belgian striker out of the building.

Last week, Spurs loaned their most expensive recruit, Tanguy Ndombele — a £55m buy from Lyon in 2019 — to Napoli. There is an option, but no obligation, for the Italian club to buy the French midfielder next summer.
And Pepe’s loan move to Nice completes the set.
The Ivory Coast winger was a £72m purchase from Lille in 2019, even though Unai Emery insisted he wanted to buy Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace instead.
Nice are paying only half of his £140,000-per-week wages and, again, there is no compulsion for a permanent move.

He made just five Premier League starts last term and it was clear that Mikel Arteta wanted rid of a player who was a relic of a previous regime.
Arteta, unlike predecessor Emery, is in tune with the club’s hierarchy, including recruitment chief Edu, and his side boasts the top flight’s only 100 per cent record.
Spurs can also argue that they are doing things differently — and more effectively — under Antonio Conte and his fellow Italian, football director Fabio Paratici.
The deals for Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic were decisive and early, with boss Conte unusually content with life and Spurs currently unbeaten.
Ndombele is a gifted player but, under four Spurs managers — Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte — he has shown his talent only fleetingly.
His final Spurs appearance, before he was loaned to Lyon last January, saw the Frenchman substituted — and loudly booed — with his side 1-0 down at home to Morecambe in the FA Cup.
Across town at Chelsea, the expensive, scattergun approach continues under new owner Todd Boehly.
This summer’s £62m deal for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella, in particular, suggests the Blues are still willing to gamble big.
United’s long-term status as transfer market mugs is well-documented — 31 different players were signed for £10m or more during Ed Woodward’s eight-year reign and not a single one has been a cast-iron hit.

The arrival of defensive midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid is exactly what United need. Yet the Brazilian is 30, so a fee of up to £70m is staggering.
No wonder they continue to talk of that ‘stupid English money’.

Reguilon, 25, is not part of Antonio Conte’s plans and has been available for transfer all summer.
Spurs were hoping to sell him permanently but are now open to a loan with the end of the transfer window fast approaching.
They are in negotiations with Lazio who would like to borrow him with an option to buy.
SunSport understands newly-promoted Fulham are yet to begin talks but they are keen on the ex-Real Madrid defender.

Reguilon, who has six Spain caps, joined from Real two summers ago and has played 67 times for the North Londoners.
But he has fallen down the pecking order behind Ryan Sessegnon and new arrival Ivan Perisic.
Reguilon was left behind from the club’s pre-season trips to South Korea and Israel along with fellow outcasts Tanguy Ndombele, Gio Lo Celso and Harry Winks.
The quartet were all training away from the first team and not involved in any of the matchday squads this season.

Sampdoria are offering him a way out of England, but it seems that Winks prefers to stay in the Premier League, as reported by the Evening Standard.
Everton and Leicester are amongst the clubs to have shown interest in the England international, but there have been no concrete negotiations.
As the last week of the transfer window approaches, Southampton and Nottingham Forest are potential options for Winks.
Clubs from LaLiga, including Valencia, have also shown interest in Winks, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 26-year-old lost his place in the Spurs first XI following the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma and has been training alone throughout pre-season.
Winks has spent his entire career playing for his boyhood club so far, making his debut with the Tottenham senior team in 2014 in the Europa League clash against Partizan Belgrade.
Since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from the club, successive coaches – Jose Mourinho and Espirito Santo – have not made good use of the midfielder’s talents.
His playing time halved when compared to the 2019/20 season, in which he played 31 Premier League matches.

The following season, he only had 15 starts, and was benched for most matches or was even left out of the squad entirely.
Under Antonio Conte, he started 17 matches in the Premier League and was left on the bench for most of the matches without coming on to contribute.
In this year’s first three Premier League matches, he did not make part of any squad which has recorded two wins and a draw so far. More

Tanganga, 23, is on their radar as they look to recruit cover for the injured Moussa Niakhate – himself a new arrival from Mainz.
Niakhate, 26, is set for months on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury during the 1-0 victory over West Ham.
According to the Mail, Tanganga has emerged as a serious target to replace Niakhate.
They claim that Spurs are demanding £17m for their homegrown defender.

Tanganga hasn’t featured in a competitive match since January after suffering a knee injury.
He returned to action during pre-season, and has been an unused substitute for matches against Chelsea and Wolves.
The Mail add that a move to Forest is unlikely unless Tottenham drop their asking price.
Tanganga has also received strong interest from AC Milan.

Spurs are reportedly in talks with the Italian champions, who are keen to team Tanganga up with England international Fikayo Tomori at the back.

James, 24, joined the Yorkshire club last summer from Manchester United in a £25million deadline day deal.
The Welshman penned a five-year contract with Leeds but now Antonio Conte wants to bring him to London.
Spurs are preparing for life in the Champions League and are considering a loan offer for James with a £20million obligation to buy.
James played a part in both of the last two Prem games for the Whites, despite missing out on the opening day win at home to Wolves.

It was his cross that led to Jack Harrison’s goal in the 3-0 mauling of Chelsea on Sunday.
Spurs are focussing on reducing their squad, hence waiting for Gil to leave before shifting the focus on James.
Gil was shipped out to Valencia on a temporary deal last January without making a single Premier League start.
The winger joined the La Liga side until the end of the season.

And the 21-year-old wants to return.
He says his family told him to quit Tottenham and return to Spain last year.
When the loan move was finalised, Gil said: “It is a special day for me. I wanted to be here.
“My family is also very happy. They wanted me to return to Spain and now it’s time to enjoy the team and the city.”

But they were also not keen to let him go unless it was a permanent move.
And it now seems the Rossoneri are prepared to meet Spurs halfway by taking the 23-year-old for a season with an eye to a long-term switch after “restarting” talks, according to Calciomercato.com.
However the two clubs will still need to thrash out a deal over his eventual price.
Milan are not willing to match Spurs’ £21million valuation unless the player excels at the San Siro.

Tanganga had looked like a future star when he broke through under Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham in Ruslan Malinovskyi transfer boost as Atalanta star’s Marseille move ‘is on verge of collapse’

TOTTENHAM have reportedly received a major boost in their pursuit of Atalanta forward Ruslan Malinovskyi.Antonio Conte was interested in bringing the Ukrainian attacking midfielder to North London earlier this summer.

The Atalanta star has netted 30 goals in 130 appearances for the Serie A outfit.
And he has also contributed an impressive 27 assists for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
But Spurs looked set to miss out on the 29-year-old when Marseille closed in on an agreement for him earlier this week.
However, according to Foot Mercato, a deal with the Ligue 1 side is now on the “verge of collapse”.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Malinovskyi is said to be unconvinced by the project at Marseille – who have taken seven points from their opening three league matches.
That could leave the door open for Tottenham – with Conte considering him an alternative to Dejan Kulusevski on the right of his front three, according to Corriere.
Spurs have a good relationship with Atalanta having previously agreed moves for Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini.
An offer from the Lilywhites would likely be a player and cash bid – with left-back Sergio Reguilon going the other way.

Two of the others – Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso – have subsequently secured loan moves to Napoli and Villarreal.
The fourth player of the forgotten quartet, Harry Winks, is yet to find another club but has been linked with Everton and Southampton. More

Harry Kane reckons Tottenham’s ability to handle high-pressure situations bodes well for season – as Ronaldo watches on

HARRY KANE rose to the occasion once again in front of the ultimate big-game player.Two-time World Cup winner Ronaldo – the Brazilian one – was watching on from the stands as Kane edged a tight game against Wolves with a predatory header for 1-0.

It is testament to Kane’s abilities that he can even be mentioned in the same breath as El Fenomeno, who many see as the greatest centre-forward of the modern era.
Ronaldo, now 45, was outrageously talented and his ability to perform when it really mattered most put him a cut above the rest.
That was certainly the case at the 2002 World Cup, where he finished top-scorer with eight goals including a double to down Germany in the final.
Kane is yet to win any team prizes in his career.
    READ MORE ON TOTTENHAM
But his haul of 185 Premier League strikes is now the most of any player in the division’s history for one club, going one clear of Sergio Aguero.
Spurs’ talisman is desperate to end that trophyless run and many seem to think this year, under Antonio Conte, could be his best chance yet.
The fact that Tottenham have taken seven points from their opening three games against Southampton, Chelsea and Wolves without even playing that well bodes well.
The expectation has gone up too after last season’s qualification for the Champions League, the good business in the transfer market and the fact Conte is known as a born-winner.
    Most read in Football
Yet Kane has no problem with the heat cranking up on him and his team-mates – because thriving in it is what winning teams do.
England’s captain said: “I think that if you want to do something important in the season you have to be able to handle those high-pressure situations.
“In the big games, in the tight games like Wolves, you have to be able to come out on top and build those points throughout the whole year.
“We’ve started the season well. Obviously the first game (against Southampton) we played really well and the next two we know we can improve but we’ve got good results.
“That’s pleasing to see. But also we know you can’t keep that up the whole season, we have to be better, especially in the first half.”
Spurs were poor in the opening 45 against Bruno Lage’s side, as they were against Chelsea last week.
But what mattered most is they dug out a result, thanks to Kane’s goal which was teed up by Ivan Perisic flicking on Son Heung-min’s corner.
Perisic, 33, was making his first start for the club since his summer freebie move from Inter Milan.
The Croat looked to have the quality, mentality and tactical awareness that a Champions League winner should possess.
He was the club’s first signing of the close-season, followed by Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie, who has been loaned back to Udinese.
Kane added: “We’re just building a good squad. Players who have the passion and desire to win every moment, every game.
“That’s what creates a good environment.
“You see it in training, you see the competition for places and everyone ready to go at it and try to impress the manager. That’s really important.
“We’ve definitely strengthened. The mentality was starting to change towards the back end of last year.
“To get Champions League in the way we did and performing in high-pressure situations at the end of the season was really important.
“And of course we’ve added to the squad, we’ve got better, we’ve improved, we’ve had a good pre-season with the manager.
“He demands a lot from us on the pitch, off the pitch, (with the) mentality.
“But also it’s still really early on in the season so time will tell. But we’re in a good place.”
Kane had not spoken to Ronaldo by the time he chatted to reporters after the game.
Though he was excited to see the great man’s presence having been made aware he was at the game through social media.
The 29-year-old added: “We’ve got a few Brazilians in our team now so I’m sure he was watching some of those.
“Ronaldo was one of the greatest strikers of all time. I loved watching himon You Tube as I was growing up. It was great to see him here.”
One day, a top Brazilian striker may be saying the same thing about Kane long after the Three Lions skipper has hung up his boots.
    Read More on The Sun
By then he will have hoped to have finally won some silverware.
If he and his team-mates can continue to come out on top in these “high-pressure situations”, there is a very good chance that will be the case. More
