SON HEUNG-MIN was mocked for a horror cross at Crystal Palace – but silenced his critics with a goal in the 4-0 win. Before Wednesday’s game, the 30-year-old has had a poor campaign for Spurs, scoring just three and assisting two in the Premier League.

Spurs have also been notoriously slow starters under Antonio Conte this term, and found themselves fifth in the table and five points behind fourth-place Manchester United before kick-off.
Son’s hopes of helping his team score the opener went up in flames in the first half after his horror cross went so high the ball needed an “oxygen mask”.
Son cut a dejected figure afterwards and it has fans all saying the same thing: It was the worst cross EVER.
One fan said on Twitter: “Son cuts a dejected figure after ballooning a cross so high the ball needs an oxygen mask on its return to earth.

“Yep, it just ain’t happening for him right now. The guy needs a break (both meanings).”
Another tweeted: “That cross from Son sums up where he is at the moment. Really feel for him.”
A third quipped: “Nah man. What’s happened to Son. That cross.”
While a fourth reported that Son’s cross landed in his back garden.

Bethany England ready to ‘embrace’ Tottenham challenge after breaking British transfer record with move from Chelsea

BETHANY ENGLAND is relishing the challenge of helping Tottenham attempt to fulfil their ambitions after calling time on her seven-year Chelsea spell. The Lionesses striker’s stunning Spurs move, reported to be for a fee of around £250,000, is thought to have seen her become the WSL’s most expensive British player.

Today the Blues confirmed England, 28, who has made more than 150 appearances for the Kingsmeadow giants, would be departing for their London rivals.
Her move sees her become the second Chelsea star in the past seven months to seal a Tottenham transfer with former Blues ace Drew Spence joining Spurs last June.
And the WSL star is determined to help her new club and boss Rehanne Skinner to reach new heights.
England said: “I’m excited to get going and the club’s got a lot of ambition so I’m hoping that I can add to that and hopefully get the club where it wants to be.

“When you look at the facilities that you’ve got, it’s coming up.
“In the women’s game there’s not many teams that have got such great facilities to start with and speaking with Rehanne – she has been a big part in this.
“Her drive and what she wants to achieve out of this club (shows) she has got great aspirations like myself.
“The club has got a nice homely feel and it makes me want to come and do a great job here.”

Skinner’s side, who take on Aston Villa in their first game of 2023, have at times struggled with finding the back of the net this term.
This is despite the team smashing eight goals past Brighton at the end of October in one of their biggest ever top tier match wins.
However Spurs, who are currently eighth after losing six of their first nine WSL matches this term, have scored just once in their last four games across all competitions.
And that goal, netted by Nikola Karczewska, came during a 1-0 defeat of Championship outfit Southampton in a Continental Cup group stage game in December.
Reflecting on her North London switch, England added: “Moving from the other side of London is again very different for me but it’s an amazing chapter for me.
“Hopefully I can bring a lot of goals to the club, my experience and just a bit of leadership in the front line, and I am quite driven, I’m quite a strong person and can be a loud character.
“I do want to do my best and I’m extremely competitive even in a game of cards or bingo.
“I have no doubt they’ll figure that out quite quickly.
“I’m not shy about saying how I feel about making sure everyone’s achieving the same goal and wants the same things.”
In England, Tottenham, who finished fifth last term, have acquired one of the most clinical finishers in the WSL in recent years.
Her move comes a week after the Daily Mail reported the striker’s Spurs transfer would see her become the most expensive Lionesses player in the league.
The forward was named the PFA’s Women’s Player of the Year in September 2020 after netting 14 goals in 15 WSL games in the 2019-20 season.
However the Lionesses striker has at times struggled  to secure a starting spot in Emma Hayes’ star-studded Blues side making just two starts in her eight WSL appearances this term.
One of her most famous strikes for her former club came during Chelsea’s opening game that term at Stamford Bridge

In September 2019 she walloped home a stunning left-footed long range effort in a 1-0 defeat of Spurs.
The striker began her senior playing career at Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2011 before joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan later that year.
She then joined Chelsea in 2016 with one season spent on loan at Liverpool from 2017 to 2018.
During her time with the Blues England netted 74 goals in 163 appearances.
And she helped them to win four league titles, two FA Cups, a league cup trophy and a Community Shield.

Antonio Conte reveals he is forgoing sleep in a bid to turn around Tottenham’s flailing season after two wins in seven

And with a tricky period coming up starting with Crystal Palace away on Wednesday, followed by the North London derby and two matches against Manchester City, a turnaround needs to happen fast.
Conte is well aware and appears to be working all hours to sort it out.
He said: “I don’t sleep for Tottenham. This has to be very clear. I don’t sleep.
“Because when I go into a situation I go 120 per cent and I’m not sleeping for Tottenham to try to improve the situation.”

Spurs salvaged a 2-2 draw at Brentford on Boxing Day having gone two goals down.
But things turned ugly on New Year’s Day as they lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa, where they conceded the first goal for the TENTH game in a row.
Some fans directed their anger towards chairman Daniel Levy after Villa’s second goal went in, with chants ordering the supremo to “Get out of our club”.
Conte said he did not hear the taunt but claimed the best thing for everyone at the club was to stay together.

And while he himself has admitted to being in a dilemma over whether to commit to Spurs’ long-term, building project or leave when his current contract is up in the summer, he praised the club’s hierarchy for the work they have done in the transfer market during his tenure.
The Italian said: “Honestly, I didn’t hear this (chant).
“But it’s important to stay to together. In my life, my family also taught me that the truth is always the best solution, even if this is a bad truth.
“In this moment we are trying together to create a base. I understand that fans want to win, to lift trophies, to be competitive. I understand that very well.
“But to take this step, you need now to create a base, to have patience.
“And I can’t tell you something different or I’ll have to tell you good lies and I don’t like to tell good lies. We’re working very hard for the best of the club.
“We’re working together. We’re in a position where everybody is giving 100 per cent, the players, the staff, the medical department, the club.
“Everybody. But you know, now we have to try to build. It’s important to have patience.
“Then to win a trophy can happen. But in mind the best targets are the Premier League and the Champions League, not the Carabao Cup or FA Cup with the greatest respect for these trophies.
“We’re trying to create a base to become competitive for important targets and be strong. “Now in this moment, we are not almost ready for many situations because we started from such a low point.
“But we’re working. The club in this period tried to sign good players – we signed Romero, Kulusevski, Bentancur, Richarlison.

The Lilywhites have fallen five points off the top four, having been beaten 2-0 in dismal fashion by Aston Villa last Sunday.
According to the Mail, Tottenham chiefs will hold talks with Sporting TODAY regarding moves for Porro and Spurs old boy Edwards.
The Portuguese side are battling on multiple fronts and don’t want to sell in January for anything below their star players’ release clauses.
Porro, 23, has a £40m release clause in his Sporting deal.

The one-cap Spain international signed permanently for Sporting from Manchester City earlier this year for £7m following a two-year loan.
He has made 21 appearances at right wing-back this term, laying on ten assists.
Spurs have struggled in this position, with Emerson Royal in particular having been booed on by his own fans against Villa at the weekend.
Edwards, meanwhile, has a £52m clause inserted in his contract.

But due to the terms of his 2019 exit, Spurs possess a 50 per cent sell on clause in his deal.
The talented winger played just once for Tottenham’s first team, a League Cup cameo against Gillingham, before being shipped off to Vitoria three years ago.
He excelled enough to earn a transfer to Sporting, where he has continued to go from strength to strength – scoring nine goals and laying on nine assists in 24 appearances in all competitions this season.
Both players impressed against Spurs in the Champions League earlier in the campaign.
They both played a starring role in Sporting’s 2-0 win in Portugal, while Edwards scored in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on his homecoming.
Speaking yesterday ahead of tonight’s trip to Crystal Palace, Conte again refused to commit his future to Tottenham.
He said: “I signed when I found the club in a difficult position for many reasons.
“Now my task, I understood it very well, is to try to help the club go in the right direction or to come back in the right direction about the choices of the players, about the work, to organise and to create a foundation.
“Now this is my big challenge here. If I want to stay, then I have to accept this.
“Otherwise, if I do not want to accept this then I have to go.”
Following the defeat to Villa he claimed that he needed expensive new signings to compete, saying: “To become title contenders, to become a team ready to fight to win something, you need to have a solid foundation, which means to have 14 or 15 strong players, with quality, and the other young players to develop.

And he has been explicit in his belief that Spurs are some way off being able to challenge for  the title.

He also believes that repeating last season’s “miracle” of finishing in the top four will be even harder, given the number of competitors with far deeper pockets.
Conte, who won four Serie A titles in charge of Juventus and Inter Milan, added: “If you ask me, ‘The challenge for you is to win the Premier League, to win the Champions League’, this is not the task here in this moment.
“My big challenge is this: To continue to work so strong with my staff and the players, to improve the club, to create a solid foundation.

Spurs fans slam Levy but he’s built world-class stadium, hired elite boss and led club to first Champions League final

SO what has Daniel Levy ever done for Tottenham?Apart from building a world-class stadium and training ground, appointing a world-class manager, reaching a first European Cup final in the club’s history and constructing a squad which boasts a World Cup-winning skipper, a World Cup-winning centre-half, the captain of England, the centre-forward of Brazil..?
Daniel Levy has been criticised by certain sections of the fanbaseCredit: Dan Weir / MatchDay Images Limited
As Spurs’ faithful demand Levy and bankroller Joe Lewis ‘get out of their club’ and as Antonio Conte stages one of his ‘woe-is-me’ rants to increase the heat on his chairman, it is worth stating those recent achievements.
Because it is grossly unfair to depict Tottenham’s ENIC owners as some ruinous Mike Ashley-style regime.
Conte is a demanding workaholic and a multiple title-winning boss, he is also a professional agitator and an arch blame- deflector — a turbulent manager for any chairman to endure.
Levy knew that when he appointed him. Spurs were the sixth richest club in the Premier League when Conte took over and now they are the seventh.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Seven English clubs expect Champions League qualification and only four will succeed. Managing Spurs is not an easy gig but Conte also knew that when he accepted the job.
Meltdowns like that which the Italian staged after Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa, will happen.
Conte performed a similar rant after defeat at Burnley last February and it had a galvanising effect on Tottenham’s season.
But for Conte to claim it was a “miracle” for him to guide Spurs into the Champions League and that he will need another miracle to do it again, is nonsense.

Guiding Arsenal to a seven-point lead at the top is bordering on miraculous, getting Spurs to fourth is a good effort, no more than that.
Conte — a man who claimed Roman Abramovich didn’t spend enough money at Chelsea — has been backed to the hilt by Tottenham’s standards.
Last summer represented Tottenham’s best transfer window in years as Levy ripped up his own playbook to spend £147.5million on proven class and experience.
Spurs recruited early and decisively on Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Clement Lenglet — this after last January’s excellent signings of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.
It is not fashionable to defend Levy — a remote man who cherishes his image as a ball-busting Bond villain.
But his reign has been a qualified success. Yes, only one League Cup in two decades. But also a club which consistently punches above their weight and have an elite infrastructure to safeguard their future.
During the early part of Levy’s reign, English football had a roped-off top four of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Manchester City wrecked that status quo with vast nation-state financing and Newcastle are now doing the same.
Yet Levy’s Spurs have achieved regular Champions League football without anything like such spending.
Conte was content at the start of the season and so, remarkably, was Harry Kane — just a year after demanding a move.
Antonio Conte gave a passionate speech to the fans after the Villa defeatCredit: Getty
He was impressed by Conte’s appointment and heartened by a return to the Champions League, where Spurs will face AC Milan next.
Now, Kane is about to break the club’s all-time scoring record but must be wondering if he will ever win a major trophy.
Kane looked lost against Villa, dropping into midfield — where he lost possession in the build-up to the second goal.
Will he want out again next summer?
He has 18 months left on his contract and Conte has just six months on his.
Sure, Spurs could do with even more investment — Hugo Lloris is past his best, they are light at full-back and need more creativity in midfield.
But injuries to players as good as Richarlison, Kulusevski and Bentancur would hinder most teams.
This squad has not been starved of investment in the last two years — despite the cost of a magnificent new stadium, swiftly followed by the pandemic.
Sure, any football fan without regard for human rights wants an Arab nation state to own their club.
But until a Sheikh or an Emir turn up, Levy and Lewis are no bad alternative.
    POTT’S ON HIS TODD
CHELSEA are reigning Club World Champions but are currently not even the leading team in the postcode of SW6, with Fulham above them in the Premier League table.
Graham Potter’s side were lucky to draw 1-1 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday and have one win in their last seven league matches.
There is a belief that, having made the call to poach Potter from Brighton, owner Todd Boehly will back his manager for the long haul.
We don’t know for sure. It’s just that we haven’t heard of many billionaire American venture capitalists who believe that patience is a virtue.
    PREM DE LA CREME
ARSENAL have finished the past two seasons in eighth and fifth, Newcastle in 12th and 11th. Yet as they prepare for a face-off tonight, Arsenal might well be champions this season and Newcastle next.
There should no longer be any debate that the Premier League is the most competitive and unpredictable of all major leagues.
    SAU ABOUT THAT?
NOW Cristiano Ronaldo has signed for the Saudis, with Lionel Messi already an ambassador for that vile regime, it seems nailed on that celebrity- obsessed Fifa will hand them the 2030 World Cup.
    MATURE UNITED
WHEN striker Marcus Rashford combined his job as a Manchester United star with the role of social-justice campaigner and unofficial Leader of the Opposition, we wondered how he ever managed to catch up on sleep.
    Now we know.
When Erik ten Hag dropped his in-form forward but Rashford came off the bench to score the winner at Wolves and admitted his ‘crime’ of missing an alarm call and a team meeting, it felt as if Manchester United were a serious and mature football club.
And we haven’t said that in years.
    TOO ERLI TO JUDGE
MANCHESTER CITY have added the greatest goal machine the Premier League have ever seen to a squad which won four of the past five titles, yet have somehow weakened.
Perhaps striker Erling Haaland, with 27 goals this term, has upset the overall ecosystem of a well-balanced team.
Or perhaps City allowed too many good players to leave in Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fernandinho.
Not many teams win the title after making a transfer-market profit the previous summer. City might still do so but it would be no mean feat from here.
    MOYES POSER
SHOULD West Ham sack David Moyes?
Not unless they have an excellent manager with a proven Premier League track record — such as Mauricio Pochettino — willing to replace him.
But would Pochettino, or any elite boss, fancy a relegation scrap at a club whose best player, Declan Rice, wants out, with a horrible stadium and a chippy fanbase?
West Ham finished sixth then seventh and reached a Europa League semi-final with a very ‘Moyes-ish’ squad full of honest grafters, which was better than the sum of its parts.
They have added ‘star quality’ in Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paqueta and Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, yet they have also lost something of what made them so good for the past two seasons.
Keep Moyes, get a couple of centre-halves fit and West Ham will be safe. Sack him and it becomes a lottery.
