Dominant Lauren Price wins boxing gold for Team GB with flawless performance on final day of Tokyo Olympics

LAUREN Price put a final golden gloss on GB’s glorious Games as she won the Olympic middleweight title.Former cabbie Price admitted she was on a journey into the unknown against China’s Qian Li.

But the only destination that mattered was the top of the podium for the Welsh wonder as she claimed GB’s 22nd gold of Tokyo and 65th medal in all.
In the spiritual home of Sumo, this was an exhibition of class and quality by the 27-year-old, nine minutes of outstanding ringcraft.
And she fully deserved Britain’s second boxing gold, after Galal Yafai yesterday, to crown a truly remarkable GB fortnight in the grand manner with a unanimous verdict.
Price arrived in Japan as the favourite and world number one but she only made the final by the skin of her teeth and the casting vote of two judges in her last four clash with Holland’s Nouchka Fontijn.
Li, by contrast, had not dropped a single round with any judge in her three contests at the Kokugikan Arena.
That lasted just three minutes of the contest.
The Newport southpaw was giving away three inches but snaked out her right to excellent effect, not allowing the current world champ – Price did not defend her crown – the chance to make any impression.
With boxing captain Frazer Clarke leading the cheers from the balcony, the first round verdict – all five judges backing Price – was greeted by raucous applause.

And when four of the five officials also gave Price the second, she only had to stay on her feet for the final round to be assured of the title she came to take home to South Wales.
She did that and more, continuing to pick her shots as the Chinese blundered into trap after trap.
What a finish. What a Games.

The 26-year-old laid on the ground for several minutes and begged for water before team-mate Eilish McColgan, who came ninth, brought her a bottle.
Judd was promptly checked over by medical officials, who briefly placed her into a wheelchair following the gruelling 32-degree run.
And she was eventually taken away from the track and given fluids to help her rehydrate.
After the race, the Rochford runner said: “That is the closest I’ve come to not finished.
“When it gets to you, it gets to you.
That is the closest I’ve come to not finishedJess Judd
“I was desperate for water, I’ve never been this sweaty in my life.”
Judd’s Team GB team-mate McColgan said of the arduous conditions: “It’s definitely one of the hardest races I’ve ever run in my life.
“I couldn’t have done much more.
‘Those girls at the front, it’s absolutely incredible they can run those times in this weather.”
Although the race kicked off at 7:45pm local time, the temperature was well over 32 degrees.

And to make matters worse for the competitors, the humidity was over 80 per cent.
Four athletes failed to complete the energy-snapping race, which was won by Holland’s Sifan Hassan.
Hassan, however, also fell victim to the horrific conditions, crawling on her hands and knees after crossing the finish line as she begged the slow officials to provide the finishers with liquids.

Galal put on a set of headphones given to him by BBC in the mixed zone and heard his brother’s voice.
Kal, 32, said: “Galal, I’m so proud.”
Galal, 28, responded: “Did you see that? Was it a good fight?”
Kal replied: “Unreal, unreal. You’ve been brilliant the whole time.”
He then added: “Galal, last thing I’ve gotta tell ya, I’ve got your PS5 out there, waiting for ya.”

The flyweight won Team GB’s first gold of the delayed Tokyo Games in what has already been a record-breaking boxing tournament for the squad.

Light-heavyweight Ben Whittaker, 24, and welterweight Pat McCormack, 26, were both reduced to silver having been beaten by Cubans in the final.
But Yafai, who upset Cuban Yosvany Veitia, 29, in the quarter-finals, brought home the gold with a flawless run in the Games.
Middleweight Lauren Price, 27, will attempt the same when she faces China’s Li Qian, 31, in tomorrow’s final.

But in a simply stunning turn of events, he turned the fight on its head with an explosive and expertly timed combination.
Khyzniaka pushed Sousa back into a neutral corner and looked to throw a right hand over the top.
But Sousa had the same idea, and followed it up with a lightening left hook, which closed the show in empathic fashion.
Khyzhniak, the hot favourite with European and World gold medals to his name, bravely made it back to his feet.
But it was not enough to save his hopes Olympic title hopes, as the referee waved off the contest.
It provided Sousa with a remarkable comeback win in one of the most dramatic finals in Olympic boxing history.
Shortly beforehand, British flyweight Galal Yafai secured Team GB’s first boxing gold as he brilliantly beat Filipino Carlo Paalam on points.
Yafai, 28, told the BBC: “It’s something I’ve always want to do, to be Olympic champion. Now I’m Olympic champion and I’m over the moon.

Brilliant Galal Yafai wins boxing gold for Team GB with dominant win over Filipino rival in Tokyo 2020 final

GALAL YAFAI, a former car factory worker from Solihull, delivered Team GB’s first boxing gold of the Tokyo Olympics. The flyweight fighter overcame former Filipino street vendor Carlo Paalam over three three-minute rounds at the Kokugikan Arena – the spiritual home of sumo.

Yafai floored Carlo Paalam in the first roundCredit: EPA
The 28-year-old – who quit work at the Land Rover firm in the Midlands to pursue the noble art – was ahead on four of the five judges’ scorecards and has now joined the showroom of British boxing champions.
The lucrative professional route will be his next target even though the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 12 months’ time would normally have been an appealing proposition, especially as he won gold at light flyweight on the Gold Coast in 2018.
Paalam started quickly and connected well with his early punches but was caught and knocked down by a brilliant left-hander from Yafai halfway through the first round.
In the second round, Paalam was warned by the referee for the use of his head and from there on it was Yafai’s fight to lose.
All Yafai had to do was stay out of trouble in the final round and remain on his feet for the 180 seconds.
And Yafai, whose family have a British-Yemen heritage, did just that to secure finally a boxing medal for his family after 13 years of trying.
Yalai is the first Brit to win in the flyweight division since Terry Spinks at the 1956 Melbourne Games.
The Brit, who was well beaten in his first bout of the Rio 2016 Games, watched on TV as sibling Kal lost to a difficult Cuban in the Last 16 of the flyweight competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Kal has since become the WBA super flyweight world champion, and he tweeted his delight at his brother’s victory, saying: “Alhumdililah!!! My brother Galal Olympic champion!!! I’m lost for words!!! Olympic champion!!!! Olympic champion!!!!”
And speaking after securing gold Yafai told the BBC: “It’s something I’ve always want to do, to be Olympic champion. Now I’m Olympic champion and I’m over the moon.
“I’ve worked hard, took up boxing and thank God it’s worked out for me.
“I bet they’re over the moon all my friends and family. The support I’ve had from back home has been ridiculous.

This result means Britain have won at least one gold medal at four successive Olympics, a credit to head coach Rob McCracken who took over 11 years ago.
Lauren Price, a former South Wales taxi driver, should double that tally when she faces China’s Li Qian tomorrow on the final day of the competition.
The middleweight boxer has been tipped to win gold even before she set foot in the Far East.
Whatever happens from now on, the British boxing camp will return to the UK shores in the next 48 hours with six medals – a record for an overseas Games, and one that eclipses the five won at the London 2012 Games.

Team GB star puts Tokyo 2020 merchandise up for sale on eBay in bid to raise funds to continue career

TEAM GB hammer thrower Taylor Campbell has listed his Tokyo 2020 merchandise on eBay in a desperate bid to raise funds.Campbell, 25, finished 14th in his heat but said he will not receive any extra money for reaching the Games.
Taylor Campbell revealed his UK Sport funding is not enough to live off
Campbell showed off his goods in the eBay auction
And he says the funding from UK Sport is not enough for him to train and live off – he even had to dip into his savings to go to the Tokyo Olympics.
Every Olympic athlete received some Samsung goods from the Games’ sponsors.
They include a Samsung Galaxy S21 bearing the design of the Olympic rings.
As well as the phone, Campbell has put his wireless earbuds up for sale.
The current bid stands at £3,230 but is constantly growing, with the public keen to get their hands on a piece of Olympic history.
Campbell is currently looking for a job so hopes his memorabilia sells for a good price, with his earnings set to go towards his training for the Commonwealth Games, which take place in Birmingham next year.
He told Sky News: “I get some funding from UK Sport but it’s not enough to live off.
“It has blown up a bit and there has been an overwhelming amount of support.
“Unfortunately making it to the Olympics doesn’t get you any more money, you do it for the pride.
“I am an iPhone guy and the Samsung will have just sat in a box as memorabilia, so I put it on eBay.”
SUN BINGO WIN A SHARE OF £250k (18+ T&Cs apply)

Some fans on Twitter were disheartened at Campbell’s need to sell the goods, and suggested other ways to raise money.
One wrote: “Just set up a go fund me man. The Athletics community will donate more than what you’re selling all that for.”
Another added: “Set up a go fund me – I don’t play the lottery but really want to support athletes directly – would actually be really chuffed to know I’ve helped in a small way!”
Since the outpour of support after auctioning the items Campbell tweeted: “Overwhelmed by the messages of support I have received since posting this. So many kind individuals out there. I will keep you all posted over the next day or so for those that have reached out offering support!”

BRAZIL are defending their Olympic football gold medal against Spain as the two strongest squads in the competition face off.The Brazilians, captained by Dani Alves, needed penalties to get past a Mexico B team after a goalless draw and will hope to see a bit more from their strikeforce in the final.

Defender Pau Torres is likely to be key to Spain’s chancesCredit: Reuters
Spain were also made to work hard for a place in the final, leaving it until the last five minutes of extra time to beat Japan 1-0 through a brilliant Marco Asensio strike.
What time does Brazil vs Spain kick off?

Brazil take on Spain on Saturday, August 7.
The match kicks off at 12.30pm.
It will be played at the Yokohama International Stadium, where Brazil beat Germany in the 2002 World Cup final.
Brazil last met Spain in the Olympic Games in 1976, when they ran out 2-1 winners.

What TV channel is Brazil vs Spain on and can I live stream it?

Brazil vs Spain is set to be an online-only event in the UK.
To stream the match live, head to the Eurosport Player or discovery+.

    Team news
Richarlison is top scorer for Brazil with five goals and is almost certain to start in a front three for the Olympic final.
Paulinho, Claudinho and Antony are likely to start behind the Everton man, with Matheus Cunha set to miss out through injury.
Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa and Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes are likely to retain their positions as holding midfielders.
And the back four of Guilherme Arana, Diego Carlos, Nino and Dani Alves hasn’t changed once during the tournament, so should remain the same.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has a nice selection problem as he decides whether to stick with quarter-final hat-trick hero Rafa Mir in his starting line-up or revert to Asensio.
Unai Simon, who also keeps goal for the senior Spain team, can win the Golden Glove with a clean sheet in the final, as can Brazil opposite number Santos.
Martin Zubimendi, Pedri and Mikel Merino are all set to start in midfield.
Experienced defenders Pau Torres and Eric Garcia should retain their spots at centre-back.
Meanwhile at full-back De La Fuente will choose between keeping Marc Cucurella and Oscar Gil in the line-up or reverting to the quarter-final pairing of Juan Miranda and Oscar Mingueza.
