TNT Sports presenter Darrell Currie left fighting for his life with mystery illness as he explains two-year absence

I’m fighting as hard as I can for my family. I won’t give up. Neither should you. ❤️ https://t.co/cBXqwh1BcE— Darrell Currie (@darrellcurrietv) July 5, 2024

That was the evening when just before 10pm, live on air, he felt something erupt inside his head as he stood in the studio alongside Michael Owen, Chris Sutton and Gordon Strachan.Brave Currie has now opened up on what happened during the final segment of the show covering Celtic’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid. And he revealed how it was the start of a health nightmare that has meant he has been unable to work due to living in chronic pain while his life has been ruined by the crippling illness. He told The Athletic: “It felt like a bomb went off in my brain. Like something exploded in my head.”READ MORE ON FOOTBALLRecalling the exact moment it happened as his pundits analysed the game on air, he said: “The second it happened, I remember holding onto my chair.“I felt dizzy, like I was going to fall out of my seat and pass out. I managed to finish the chat and get to the break but I came off air feeling terrible.“Walking back to the TV trucks, it felt like the ground wasn’t there. I had no real sense of where I was.”He headed to London the next day to present another Champions League game despite his body still reeling, leading to him being diagnosed with labyrinthitis – inflammation of the ear – after a late-night private GP appointment. Most read in FootballBut things continued to get worse before three weeks later it all came to a head as he hosted the broadcaster’s coverage of Scotland versus Ireland.Currie said: “I texted the producer during the second half asking how long the post-match segment was.Scientists discover more than 200 symptoms impact the daily lives of people with long Covid“I was struggling to stand up and every time I was turning my head to chat to the pundits, I felt like going to faint or fall over.“I take a lot of pride in my work so I would never, ever not finish a programme, but that night the producer saw something was not right with me. He came into the stadium during the game and said he was taking it out of my hands: I was being taken off air. It was the biggest weight off my shoulders.”That evening, which was on September 24, 2022, was the last time that the star was able to present live television.Currie, married to pilates instructor Jennifer and who has two children, says his legs completely seized up as he continued to struggle with his physical decline. He tried physio but the chronic pain spread all over his body and left him unable to work and he struggled to even get out of bed towards the end of 2022 and early 2023.Currie was eventually told by a specialist in Germany that it was believed he had early symptoms of arachnoiditis, which is a rare, progressive inflammatory condition that affects the part of the body that protects the nerves of the brain and the spinal cord. After joining a number of online groups he was left petrified as sufferers described paralysis as it worsened.Darrell Currie was the face of BT Sport’s Scottish footballCredit: Kenny Ramsay – The Sun GlasgowCurrie said: “For those few months after that diagnosis, I’m not sure I wanted to be alive.“I would talk to my wife often about, ‘What is the point in being here?’ I couldn’t really see the light of day.“I would never have committed suicide, as I remember speaking to Kris Boyd about his charity and I know how that can be for your family, leaving them like that.“I never told anyone I was thinking of it, but I was genuinely trying to think of ways I could do it — even if that was abroad so it was something assisted.“The pain was horrific. My neck felt broken, my back felt broken, my whole body felt broken. I could barely hold my head up. I was questioning everything.”His wife proved to be his inspiration to get him through his darkest days and after “getting my head together”. He has undergone steroid treatment, but he suffers with disequilibrium from lighting and carries an umbrella-turned-walking stick whenever he goes outside. He has to perform neck and spine exercises as soon as he wakes up and has to sleep with a heat pack on his back that has stripped skin from his body. But he has now finally been diagnosed with chronic pain and nerve damage in his spinal canal. He now works with Dr Ben Sinclair, who is using his own experiences of long Covid to help treat others, who believes that Currie is also a sufferer of it.You’re Not AloneEVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicideIt doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers. It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes. And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now. That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign. The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone. If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:Currie tested positive for Covid in 2022 just two weeks before tearing a disc in his back. He also said he got “terrible tinnitus”, which he claims was a side-effect after getting his first vaccine. He said: “This is possibly the start of the story. After the second and third vaccines I had weird feelings — pins and needles up my arms, across my face, it felt like my tongue was vibrating, my jaw was hardly moving and I had headaches. Now doctors say those are signs of mild allergic reactions.“Did the Covid vaccines potentially affect my immune system and so, when I then got Covid, could my body not react? Was it immune failure, attacking itself? A lot of doctors I am seeing now feel that is what happened.“There might be loads of people like me who have been told they have got something like fibromyalgia or MS or some neurological condition, when actually it could be something post-vaccine or Covid itself.“What I know is there are a lot of people suffering.”He has since undergone monoclonal antibody therapy which are injections to try and attack the spike proteins that exist in the body from Covid. And he has also been offered a riskier experimental treatment that involves six weeks of triple antibiotics being infused intravenously into the bloodstream which is hoped would get rid of any underlying bacterial infections. But after remortgaging the family home, he says: “There is a point where you wonder if you have to stop searching, as it is so expensive. It is not easy with money. My wife is working really hard and we’re trying to give the kids the best life possible.“Equally, when people are saying there is the possibility this might work, it is so hard not to try it. Dmitry Bivol retained his WBA and IBO belt with a devastating flurry of punches in the sixth round.
The Russian’s last stoppage came in March 2018 against Cuban Sullivan Barrera in New York.

Dmitry Bivol will return to Riyadh for a mouth-watering light-heavyweight undisputed showdown with kingpin Artur Beterbiev on October 12 following a clinical stoppage victory against brave challenger Malik Zinad.
Bivol, the WBA and IBO champion, was due to face unified WBC, WBO and IBF champion Beterbiev before the latter was forced to withdraw due to injury.
“We are professional boxers, we have to change tactics at any moment and I had enough time to change my preparations for a different fighter to Beterbiev,” said Bivol.

What a night in Saudi Arabia where Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions dominated Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport to win the inagural 5v5 in a landslide.
Warren’s boys won all five fights – three of those via stoppage – to leave Hearn licking his wounds.
Daniel Dubois put himself into world title contention, and a possible fight with Anthony Joshua, while Deontay Wilder is now facing calls to retire after a brutal, poor defeat to Zhilei Zhang.
We’ll have all the reaction and fallout from a brilliant night of boxing. Full results were:

Here’s another angle of that brutal KO

    Copy linkCopiedWhat’s next?
Plenty to unpack after the ring as a long night draws to a close in Saudi.
Turki Alalshikh reveals there will be a big card announced at Wembley at the end of the month, while Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren say they are ready to do another 5v5 event as soon as possible.
    Copy linkCopiedQueensberry 10 Matchroom 0
Well, that makes it a whitewash for Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions in the 5v5 against Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport.
The event ends with a 10-0 score and Warren is the winner of five fights out of fight and a £3MILLION bet with his rival.
Remember, each win was worth a point but Queensberry earned three bonus points as Zhilei Zhang, Daniel Dubois and Hamzah Sheeraz scored KO wins.
Sheeraz also earned another couple of bonus points as he was the Queensberry team captain.

WOW! That was an absolutely brutal KO by Zhilei Zhang.
Zhang lands one right on Wilder’s nose and, for some reason, the American turns around to look at the ref.
As he turns Zhang throws his full force into a nasty right hand that absolutely flattens Wilder.
The ref gave Wilder a chance to beat the count but, truthfully, he looked like he was happy to have a way out of that one.

Finally, Wilder wakes up a bit and throws a couple of wild right hands with some success.
It didn’t seem to do any damage to his opponent but at least it’s a bit of activity and aggression. Wilder is clearly looking for that perfect knockout but it doesn’t come.
Then all of a sudden Zhang lands some big shots and the ref waves it off!
What a win for the Chinese star!
Copy linkCopiedDeontay Wilder vs Zhilei Zhang (Round 4)
Zhang banks another one. Wilder is just on the backfoot and throwing with zero volume – he’s waiting for that one big right hand.
He’s barely working the jab, instead pawing at Zhang to try and find some range.
Zhang, on the other hand, is throwing combinations with menace and looks in a different league to the former world champ.
Something drastic needs to change or we will not be seeing Deontay Wilder at this level any more.

Another stiff left lands on Wilder and then Zhang follows it up with a good shot to the body.
Wilder looks scared to throw in case something comes back. Perhaps he’s trying to draw him on to unload a big counter but it certainly doesn’t seem that way.
He’s tentative, on the back foot and happy to move along the ropes.
Another round for Zhang in my book.
Copy linkCopiedDeontay Wilder vs Zhilei Zhang (Round 2)
Zhang well in the ascendancy here, there was one point early in the round where he had the American trapped in the corner and was just raining shots on him.
Wilder did well to escape but he hasn’t landed a punch in anger yet, huge round from Zhang.
The message from the corner says it all: “Don’t quit on yourself, I don’t want you to be a punching bag.
“I don’t want no rock ’em, sock ’em s***.”

Extremely tight round that one, both fighters feeling each other out.
The judges could score that any one of three ways.
What is noticeable immediately is the size difference between these two – two of Wilder’s legs is like one of Zhang’s.
    Copy linkCopiedOn their way
Zhilei Zhang is in the ring and in all gold, he comes out to 80s classic Eye of the Tiger – with a little bit of Chinese added for good measure.
Deontay Wilder, never one to miss an opportunity for a decent ring-walk, enters the ring with black shorts, some kind of custom vest and a sparkly face mask.

Main event of the evening coming next and another 50/50 fight.
Both men are coming off big losses and find themselves at crossroads in their careers.
Wilder was well beaten by Joseph Parker after three years out and many people are questioning if he can still do it at the top level.
Parker also beat Zhang in his last fight but that was a lot closer, with Zhang sending the New Zealander to the canvas a couple of times.
One potential X-factor is that Zhang will enter the ring 70 POUNDS heavier (that’s five stone in old money).
    Copy linkCopiedDubois vs AJ?
Well what next for Dubois after a performance like that?
It’s a complicated one, to put it mildly. That fight was for the right to fight for the IBF title next, a belt which is currently held by Oleksandr Usyk.
However, the undisputed champ may be stripped of that belt while he chases a rematch with Tyson Fury.
That means Dubois might see his belt upgraded to world champion status – without fighting – or could open the door to a fight with Anthony Joshua, in September.
However, one spanner in the works is Deontay Wilder.
Turki Alalshikh is apparently desperate to see Wilder vs Joshua next and that may stop the Dubois vs AJ train.
    Copy linkCopied’No retreat, no surrender’
Speaking after the fight, Dubois said: “No retreat, no surrender. I had to do whatever it took, needed to come through the fire and I did that tonight.
“I needed that support from Frank Warren and my dad, they’ve been there the whole time and we did it.”
Asked about the 5v5, Dubois added: “We’re the kings, we’re the daddies!”

It’s been an absolute whitewash in the 5v5 so far – four wins out of four for Frank Warren over Eddie Hearn.
Then you add in TKO wins for Daniel Dubois and Hamzah Sheeraz (who also earned extra points as the team captain) and it’s turned out to be a very poor night for Hearn.
Remember, not only has he seen four of his fighters lose, but Hearn’s also lost the £3MILLION bet with longtime rival Warren.
Copy linkCopiedDaniel Dubois BEATS Filip Hrgovic by TKO
Absolutely superb stuff from Dubois, who just put in a career best performance in Saudi Arabia.
Hrgovic certainly had the better of the early rounds but, all of a sudden, Dubois turned on the gas and went to another level.
He landed some sensational cuts and combos in that one, with Hrgovic a bloody mess by the end of that.
Dubois wobbled the Croatian a couple of times and the ref took a very close look before asking the doctor to make a decision.
Hrgovic was left with huge cuts across his face and it was waved off – Dubois may well now face Anthony Joshua next.

    Daniel Dubois wins!
Sensational performance from the Londoner and the referee waves it off due to the incredible amount of damage on Hrgovic’s face.

Copy linkCopiedFilip Hrgovic vs Daniel Dubois (Round 7)
Brilliant round for Dubois there, he’s landing lovely shots and throwing good combinations.
After a brisk start, Hrgovic looks out on his feet and a couple of massive shots really wobble him.
The Croatian is then saved by the bell but that does not save him from the bloody cuts that are now pouring out claret.
