Premier League team’s fans who are worst for leaving matches early revealed – where does your club rank?

Arsenal supporters ranked second in the survey
Almost one in four fans in total admitted leaving at least one game early last season — with “beating the traffic” the main reason.
Others claimed they did it for superstitious reasons — or they just didn’t like the stadium.
Man United also saw the longest stoppage time at the end of games, so their early leavers were most at risk of missing last-minute goals.
Of all the 1,300 fans surveyed, a third say they missed at least one goal by heading for the hills.

Asked what they thought of supporters who left early, 19 per cent thought they were wasting money.
Six per cent told Betfair’s survey that such action was “disgusting”.
Thousands of Arsenal fans were slammed for fleeing their Emirates stadium during a battering by Brighton last season that ended their title hopes.
The Gooners face a top of the early leavers table clash against Man United on Sunday.

How infamous World Cup kiss has become Spain’s MeToo moment sparking mass resignations – and even a hunger strike

IT should have been one of Spain’s proudest moments as the country lifted the Women’s World Cup after beating England in a thrilling final. But a “celebratory” kiss planted on striker Jenni Hermoso by her football association boss has seen anger replace joy and led to thousands of women taking to the streets in protest.

The #MeToo-style revolution that has been unleashed and is reverberating through Spain has also caused mass resignations and even a dramatic hunger strike.
Gender issues have become a prominent topic in the country in recent years, with marches against sexual violence and reforms around equal pay and abortion rights.
Now the outpouring of solidarity for forward Hermoso, 33 — who received the unwanted kiss on the lips from Royal Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales — may yet prove more significant than the victory in the final itself.
Reserve goalie Misa Rodriguez tweeted a cartoon of an old woman and a child with the caption: “Grandma, tell me about how your team won the World Cup.”

The grandmother answers: “We didn’t just win the World Cup, little one. We won so much more.”
Social media has been flooded with posts bearing the hashtag #SeAcabo, meaning, “It’s over”.
And in an extraordinary mutiny, Hermoso, her 23 World Cup team mates and 56 other women footballers have refused to play for Spain while Rubiales remains in post.
Fifa have stepped in, removing Rubiales from all football-related activities for 90 days.

    Bizarre and crude
On Monday, Spanish prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into Rubiales’ behaviour.
His own RFEF association has even called on him to step down.

But Rubiales, 46, has remained bullishly unrepentant, insisting the kiss was consensual.
His mum, Angeles Bejar, has locked herself inside a church and gone on hunger strike in protest at her son’s treatment.
She insisted: “I will remain here for as long as my body can.
“I am willing to die for justice because my son is a decent person and it is not fair what they’re doing.”
Rubiales’ cousin Vanessa Ruiz says the family want Hermoso to “tell the truth” and acknowledge that the kiss was not forced.
For her part, the player says she was “the victim of an aggression” and “at no time did I consent to the kiss he gave me”.
This dispiriting story began in what should have been a joyous occasion amid the heaving cauldron of Stadium Australia on August 20.
Spain had dominated the first half against England, going 1-0 up.
Then with 20 minutes to go, La Roja (The Red One), as the Spain team are nicknamed, were awarded a penalty.
Veteran striker Hermoso stepped up to take it, only to see it saved by Lioness keeper Mary Earps in front of more than 75,000 fans.
Spain clung on to win by their single goal. As the final whistle sounded, Rubiales leapt up to celebrate in bizarre and crude fashion.
Standing next to Spain’s queen and her 16-year-old daughter, he gestured at the players on the field, then grabbed his crotch.
    Worse was to follow.
Rubiales, also a vice-president of European football’s governing body Uefa, was positioned on the winners’ rostrum to greet his victorious team.
As Hermoso approached, he hugged her around the neck and appeared to lift his body weight off the ground and swing both knees close to her hips.
Then he dropped his feet to the ground, cupped his hands around her head and kissed her on the lips.
Back in the dressing room, La Roja players replayed the incident on a phone.
As some of the Spain stars giggled and screamed, Hermoso could be seen shouting: “But I didn’t like it!”
When quizzed about his behaviour afterwards, Rubiales dismissed critics of his unwanted kiss as “idiots”.
He added: “When two people have a minor show of affection, we can’t listen to idiocy. We are champions and that’s what I’ll take.”
Yet many around the world were now talking about his boorish and sexist behaviour rather than La Roja’s brilliant victory.
Miquel Iceta, Spain’s minister for culture and sport, said: “We’re in a moment of equality, of rights and respect for women.
“I think it’s unacceptable to kiss a player on the lips to congratulate her.”
As the Spanish team stopped off in Qatar en route home, Rubiales finally issued a mealy-mouthed apology, saying he was, “Sorry to those who were offended”.
Later that same day, the RFEF released a statement on behalf of Hermoso in an attempt to draw a line under the furore.
It quoted Hermoso as saying: “It was a totally spontaneous mutual gesture due to the immense joy of winning a World Cup.
“The president and I have a great relationship, his behaviour with all of us has been excellent and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude.”
But players’ body FIFPRO, which represents 65,000 footballers worldwide, took a different view.
It said in a statement: “Uninitiated and uninvited physical gestures towards players are not appropriate or acceptable in any context.
“This is especially true when players are put in a position of vulnerability because a physical approach or gesture is initiated by a person who holds power over them.”
Back in Spain, the country’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said Rubiales’ apology was “insufficient and inadequate”.
He added: “It shows that in our country there’s a long way to go in terms of equality and respect between men and women.”
As pressure built, there were reports that Rubiales was set to resign.
Then last Friday, the defiant chief not only refused to quit but also cast himself as the victim.
He tried to make amends for his crotch grab, saying: “I have to apologise to the royal family. It wasn’t very edifying.”
    ‘False feminism’
He suggested there was “no dominance” in the kiss planted on Hermoso and claimed he asked the player if she agreed to “a peck” and she had said yes.
Rubiales insisted he was subject to a “social assassination”, adding that his critics were harnessing “false feminism, one of the scourges of this country”.

Hermoso hit back, calling Rubiales’ claims “categorically false and part of the manipulative culture that he himself has generated”.
She said: “At no time did I consent to the kiss. It fills us with sadness that such an unacceptable event is managing to tarnish the greatest sporting success of Spanish women’s football.”
But RFEF hit back, accusing Hermoso of “lies’” and threatening legal action.
Hermoso’s teammates rallied round, boycotting the national team.
And 11 enraged technical staff from Spain’s women’s team quit.
The Spanish government has begun legal proceedings to suspend Rubiales.
But staggeringly, he remains in post with a key role in trying to win Spain’s joint bid to host the 2030 men’s World Cup.
Born in the Canary Islands and raised in Motril, southern Spain, Rubiales was a journeyman defender for teams including Mallorca B and Hamilton in Scotland.
He became RFEF chief in 2018, earning some £300,000. He also earns around £210,000 as a Uefa vice-president.
But his tenure at the Spanish FA has been dogged by allegations of sleaze.
In 2020, his uncle, Juan Rubiales, told Spanish anti-corruption prosecutors that his nephew ordered him to use FA funds to pay for a private party with eight or ten young women said to be sex workers.
Juan, who Rubiales had sacked as his head of staff, claimed the women attended the “orgies” under the pretext of a work event.
RFEF denied the claim, saying it was a “new exercise in falsehoods by a former federative employee motivated by spite”.
Dad-of-three Rubiales, who is separated from his wife, is being investigated by Spanish authorities for using RFEF funds for a week-long break in New York with partner Roberta Lobeira, a Mexican painter.
Rubiales insists he was meeting UN and Major League Soccer representatives.
Meanwhile, Hermoso was met with rapturous applause when attending the Women’s Cup final between Atletico Madrid and AC Milan on Saturday.

‘Devastated’ Mason Greenwood ‘doesn’t know which way to turn’ after being dumped by Man Utd

MASON Greenwood has been left “devastated” by Manchester United’s decision to dump him – which has left him mulling over an offer from a club in Albania. The forward, 21, and his family had expected to return to the Red Devils after club officials indicated they were willing to give him a second chance.

But following a public backlash the club announced on Monday he would not play for United again.
His hopes of re-starting his career at a high level club have also been dealt a blow after officials from Italian Serie A side Roma and the Saudi Premier League indicated they were no longer interested in signing the Prem star.
Following his suspension by United after charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive controlling behaviour were dropped in February, at least two Premier League clubs made enquiries about signing him on loan.
But those clubs are now re-thinking their plans as they consider whether any public backlash they are likely to receive if they sign him is worth it.

Championship clubs are also believed to be monitoring the situation, but are worried they too would be unable to handle the PR situation.
So at the moment, the only side who are reportedly interested is an unnamed team in Albania.
The Sun understands the backlash has been so severe that Greenwood – who became a dad in July – has been left “devastated” and fearing for the future of his career.
A source said: “Mason always wanted to re-start his career at the highest level possible.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after disturbing images were placed on social media.
But his court case was halted after key witnesses withdrew their evidence.
United CEO Richard Arnold said this week that a five month club investigation had concluded that Greenwood did not commit any criminal offences, but that he needed to leave Old Trafford for the good of his career.

Mason Greenwood’s career dealt another blow by Ronaldo who could stop his move to Saudi Arabia over long running feud

He later moved to Juventus and returned to Old Trafford in September 2021.
The comment emerged in March, three months after Ronaldo, 38, signed for Saudi team Al-Nassr in a two-year £350million deal.
When Ronaldo learned about it he was furious — and urged league bosses not to consider making a move for his former teammate.
A source said: “Ronaldo isn’t known for his thick skin.

“He was really annoyed at what Greenwood said — but he has good reason to be when you consider what Ronaldo has achieved in his career and where Greenwood finds himself.
“Greenwood had his nose put out of joint when Ronaldo signed for United because he ended up playing a lot less than he had hoped for, so their relationship was difficult.”
Ronaldo was the first superstar to move to the Saudi league and he has a lot of influence.
The source added: “Ronaldo is treated as royalty in Saudi and what he says goes.
    Most read in Football
“He would have enough influence there to kibosh clubs from signing Greenwood if he wanted to.”
The Sun understands Saudi league bosses are also wary of making a move for Greenwood given the country already suffers from bad PR.
A senior figure within the Saudi Premier League said it would be “very surprising” if attempts were made to sign Greenwood given the huge push for women’s football in the past year, which saw an 86 per cent rise in registered female players in the country.
A source said: “If Greenwood is too toxic for football in Saudi Arabia, you do wonder where on earth he could rebuild his career.”
The second season of the Saudi women’s league kicks off on October 11 with women playing without head coverings and male fans watching in the stands.
Clubs from Turkey and Italy have previously registered their interest in Greenwood but yesterday Serie A club Roma, managed by ex-United boss Jose Mourinho, distanced itself from the player.
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard, now manager at Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, also dismissed claims he was interested as “fake news”.

Our talented Lionesses have covered the beautiful game in glory – so men, please just let the football do the talking

ON the eve of the biggest event in British women’s sporting history, it was left to Prince William to give the rallying cry on behalf of his loyal subjects.“Lionesses, I want to send you a huge good luck for tomorrow,” he intoned to camera, one hand tightly gripping daughter Charlotte, his cunning secret weapon. (A girl! Clutching a football!)

Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales KISSED midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the mouth
“We’re sorry we can’t be there in person, but we are so proud of everything you have achieved and the millions you have inspired here and around the world.
“So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves.”
Translation: “Bravo girlywirlies, kick ball good on big green field, and one day my little girl might become big girl heading big heavy balls like you clever-wevver gallies.”
Can you, for one second, imagine a planet on which the President of the Football Association, and next in line to the throne, addresses Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Declan Rice and Reece James (Lauren’s brother), instructing them to “enjoy themselves”?

    It simply wouldn’t happen.
Even worse, Spanish Football Federation pres- ident Luis Rubiales KISSED midfielder Jenni Hermoso ON THE MOUTH, and lifted her off her feet as he congratulated the team.
Again, imagine if this muppet had tried it with male player Sergio Ramos. But, of course, he never would.
And, last week, Fifa boss Gianni Infantino claimed women should “pick the right battles” to “convince us, men, what we have to do” over equality issues in the sport.
    Most read in Football
Brilliantly, England’s Lucy Bronze picked her battle on Sunday — apearing to refuse to shake the dino-saur’s hand after the game.
Over the past few weeks, this supremely talented, tenacious and gen- eration-shaping squad have covered the beautiful game in glory.
None of the toxic tribalism of the men’s game, less rolling around in faux agony (with the possible exception of Spain on Sunday) and stadiums filled with happy, smiling families and shirt-wearing kids.
The football itself has also been top-drawer. Physically, the women have covered as much ground as the men did in Qatar, and Chloe Kelly’s 69mph penalty against Nigeria was more powerful than any spot kicks of the (men’s) Premier League last season.
So, then, why are women still being patronised? Why is the language around football still so different?
Professional female athletes train as hard as their male counterparts and similarly eat, sleep and breathe the game (minus nightclub misdemeanours, sex scandals and pre-season Ibiza benders).
Why didn’t Prince William attend the World Cup final when, 57 years ago, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth presented captain Bobby Moore with the trophy?
    ‘Financial boost’
Instead — and with dad-of-two Rishi Sunak also too busy washing his hair to attend — it was left to household name Lucy Frazer, the culture secretary, to represent the UK.
William was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.
As an ardent environmentalist and founder of Earthshot, private jetting 22,000 miles for a 90-minute match (plus 13) doesn’t exactly scream “net zero”. Plus there were constitutional concerns.
With its burgeoning republican movement, King Charles is yet to visit his Antipodean brethren — being beaten to it by his son would have been a PR disaster.
But think of the financial boost his very presence could have secured for the game. (In contrast, Spain’s Queen Letizia attended, accompanied by her youngest daughter Infanta Sofia, 16).
Fifteen million of us watched the final — the second most-watched event of the TV year, behind the King’s Coronation which, let’s face it, was basically state TV and rammed down our collective throats. The will is there.
We’re not asking for financial parity (yet). Just a bit of equality.
Men: Please just let the football do the talking.
    Mary is the clear winner
OF all the own goals at this year’s World Cup, none was more cataclysmic, surely, than Nike’s.
Shooting itself in the synthetic kangaroo leather-booted foot, bosses (presumably largely male) decided not to make a replica Mary Earps shirt.

Instead of staying mute on the sidelines, the England goalie said the decision was “hugely disappointing and very hurtful”.
Such a raw, emotive declaration is, in itself, pretty brave. But the multibillion pound conglomerate needed calling-out – and she did just that.
(Nike’s “thinking” was that not enough people would want to wear a goalkeeper’s shirt).
On Sunday, Mary was a Goliath between the posts.
Not only did she win the tournament’s Golden Glove as the best keeper, she won a veritable army of new fans. Surely a six-figure endorsement deal with Adidas beckons.
As corporate PR disasters go, it doesn’t get much worse.
    Mary 1, Nike 0.

Increasingly we are living behind pixelated screens.
Concerts, sporting fixtures and even simple everyday family occasions are being filmed. (The other day, during lunch with my parents, I artfully took a photo of my . . . fillet steak – WHY? I can safely say this picture will never see the light of day and never, ever, will I excitedly hunt it out on my camera roll.)
Our screen obsession is quite literally putting a blockade on real human connection and, ironically, makes us less able to make real, lasting memories.
