Charlton face being booted out of EFL with ownership shambles among worrying parallels with Bury

CHARLTON are in danger of heading the same way as Bury unless owners ESI sell the club.
SunSport understands an appeal lodged by the Addicks against the EFL’s decision to ban chairman Paul Elliott and club lawyer Chris Farnell from taking over is doomed.

Ex-Southampton manager Dave Jones was set to be made Charlton’s special football adviser, but that appointment may be delayedCredit: PA:Press Association
The League are currently instructing an independent panel to hear the case but their original decision is deemed bullet proof by EFL legal eagle Nick Craig.
Worryingly, for Addicks fans, Farnell was the lawyer acting for Bury last summer before they were booted out of the EFL after failing to provide proof of funding.
While – in another twist – Farnell was planning to appoint former Southampton and Wolves boss Dave Jones today as special football adviser.
Jones also held the same role at Bury last summer.

But that may now be put back after a video showed Charlton supporters interrupting a meeting Farnell was staging with Jones at his Manchester office on Friday – as they sought to confront him.

The owners are telling the fans all is good yet behind the scenes they’re looking to sell prized assets as they’re desperate for cash.
    SunSport source

Jones is, however, already working on selling fans’ favourite and keeper Dillon Phillips and has recommended three overseas players to the club although they are currently under a transfer embargo.
A well-placed source told SunSport: “The current owners are telling the fans all is good yet behind the scenes they’re looking to sell prized assets because they’re desperate for cash.”
Farnell resigned his position yesterday as a director of ESI but remains as club lawyer.

SunSport understands by removing himself from that position, he is hoping that will satisfy one of the EFL’s conditions for passing the test.
Former chief executive Peter Varney and ex-Ritz owner Andrew Barclay both still want to take-over the club.
And the two have the finances in place to complete a deal – but as things stand they are unable to negotiate as no-one is sure yet who owns the club.
If Farnell and Elliott fail their appeal, the club will either revert back to the control of ESI majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer or to other individuals appointed by ESI, who will then be subjected to the League’s fit and proper owners’ test.

If it is the former, the Abu Dhabi businessman will be keen to negotiate a deal with Varney and Barclay.
The situation is complicated by the fact the Addicks no longer own The Valley or training ground – which was retained by former owner Roland Duchatelet.
Nimer wants shot of the club to rid himself of a £50m commitment to buy back the land from the Belgian.
    ‘ALMOST MIRROR IMAGE’ OF BURY
The big concern is, with the club appealing a decision they know is certain to fail, they run the risk of being in a Bury situation next month.
An insider told SunSport: “It’s almost a mirror image. The EFL could postpone their first fixture and say they need evidence of someone funding the club.
“Tahnoon has already failed to provide proof of funds so probably won’t be able to this time either.

“If the club is then not sold, they will almost certainly run a huge risk of expulsion.”
The EFL has told SunSport there is no timeframe for the appeal process to be completed although they were hoping it would be concluded “as soon as possible”.
It is understood one thing that could go in Charlton’s favour, unlike Bury, is they do not currently have any insolvency issues. More

Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi plays Sunday league game to raise awareness of knife-crime just 12 hours after Bayern match

CHELSEA ace Callum Hudson-Odoi amazed spectators by turning up for a Sunday league game — little more than 12 hours after a Champions League match in Germany.
The £120,000-a-week winger flew home from a 4-1 defeat against mighty Bayern Munich to take the kick-off for Saha FC against Lambeth Allstars FC.

The fixture was part of an anti-knife crime Black Lives Matter event in Croydon, South London.
However, the presence of the 19-year-old, capped three times by England, could not stop Saha FC going down 5-3.
One onlooker said: “Everyone recognised him and he was chatting to everyone.
“He knew a few of the boys from Saha FC so that’s why he was there. People couldn’t believe it.

“He didn’t seem tired, he was just happy to help support the event.”

On Saturday night, Hudson-Odoi was unlucky to have a long-range effort chalked off while playing the full Champions League match in Munich’s Allianz Arena, which finished just after 9.45pm.
By 10.30am the next day he was wearing the No 11 shirt as Saha FC, of the Croydon Municipal Sunday Football Adult League, kicked off the pre-season friendly on a 4G pitch at Selhurst Arena.
Opponents Lambeth Allstars tweeted: “Thanks Callum Hudson-Odoi for coming out today, supporting our anti-knife crime BLM community event.”

MP calls for Euro 2021 games at Wembley to be played nationwide to aid Britain’s Covid recovery

EURO Championship games due to be played at Wembley should be staged around Britain to boost the coronavirus recovery nationwide, according to a leading MP.
Next year’s delayed Euro 2020 tournament will see three England games, a last 16 match, both semi finals and the final played at the national stadium, but acting Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has written to the FA and UEFA to have the games played across the UK.

They are calling for games to be played at St James’ Park, in Newcastle, Old Trafford, in Manchester, Anfield, in Liverpool, and Leicester’s King Power stadium instead.
Sir Ed told The Sun: “We should spread football cheers around our country, and let these matches give a kick-start to places hit hard by Covid.
“If it is safe, I want Boris Johnson to get his Government to work with UEFA and make use of the fantastic stadiums around the country. Let’s show off our whole country – we’re proud of every town and city, not just London.”

The letter, to FA Chief Mark Bullingham, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Sport can be a great healer to many and the rescheduled Men’s Euro 2020 fixtures next summer will be a tremendous opportunity to raise both the nation’s spirits and stimulate the economy across the nation.
“Currently England are scheduled to play all their group games in London. Wembley is also hosting a last 16 game, the semi-finals and final.

“England has some fantastic stadia across the country and it feels like a missed opportunity not to spread the joy that these games will bring and the inevitable boost to the economy around the regions.
“If it can be done, in a safe way, I’d urge you to work with UEFA to explore the possibility at spreading both the Euro 2020 fixtures and England’s warm-up games out around the country, in the same way that you have been able to do with the Women’s European Championship in 2022.”

Yesterday the FA said Euro scheduling was down to UEFA, and the governing body did not reply to comment.

He told Vicky Pattison’s The Secret To podcast: “From 14 to 15 I’d drink a lot and go to school drunk every so often.
“I would cause problems, I would act out.
“I got myself in trouble and got taken home by the police a few times.
    “It was never anything serious.

“It was just this sort of rebellious phase.”
He continued: “That lasted until I was about 21 when I properly settled down.

Sheffield United ready to raid cash-strapped Wigan in bargain £1.5m Antonee Robinson transfer

SHEFFIELD UNITED are swooping for Wigan’s American star Antonee Robinson in a bargain £1.5 million deal.
Chris Wilder’s Blades have stepped in front of West Brom and hope to seal the move in the next 48 hours.

Former AC Milan target Robinson can leave Latics after their relegation to League One for the same money they paid Everton for him.
Newly-promoted Baggies have tried to do the deal for the past few weeks but the chance to join their more established Premier League rivals Blades has swung it their way.
It is a huge chance for USA left-back Robinson, who never made the Prem at Goodison Park.
Robinson was also close to joining Milan at the start of the year until a problem was detected with an irregular heart beat.

He was cleared of the issue later without needing surgery.

The money will help Wigan’s administrators sort out the club’s finances and make it easier for a buyer to be found.
They are still reeling from losing their case at an EFL appeals panel against a 12-point penalty – a deduction that cost them their Championship place.
The appeal cost around £480,000, so losing it was an even bigger blow for the cast-strapped finances. More
