Emi Martinez insists Aston Villa are a ‘step up’ from Arsenal after clean sheet against former club

EMILIANO MARTINEZ claims quitting Arsenal for Aston Villa was a step up — not  down.
The Argentine keeper went to Villa for an initial £17million in September because he did not want to be second choice at the Gunners.

And his decision paid off on Sunday night as he helped Dean Smith’s men to a thumping 3-0 win over his old club at the Emirates.
Martinez, 28, said: “Some people do not realise how big Aston Villa are.
“They were all saying it was a step down in my career but I always said it was a step up.

“When I decided to come to Villa it was because I trusted the manager and the club’s ambitions.
“We are going to have a really good season hopefully,  and keep fighting in every game for every ball.
“Hopefully we can  finish in the top ten.”
Martinez spent nine years at Arsenal and helped them win the FA Cup last season.

But he left when boss Mikel Arteta could not guarantee him a spot.
He revealed: “I  texted him to say I was going to Aston Villa, so please let me go. He was very honest and  open with me.

“He helped me to leave after so many years.”
Villa are sixth after beating the Gunners.
Martinez added: “It was a massive win. Arsenal was the best performance this season.”

Man Utd stars told ‘siege mentality’ can strengthen bond and end struggles by Treble hero Andrew Cole

ANDREW COLE says it is time this Manchester United team hit back at those revelling in their demise.
Time to ram the taunts back down their detractors’ throats and show they can be winners again.

⚠️ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

Andy Cole has urged Man Utd players to develop a siege mentality and ignore criticismCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
When he was at the club, Treble-winner Cole knew everyone outside Old Trafford wanted them to fail.
But that only made them stronger — and now Cole, 49, wants to see the same happen to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United.
Cole said: “The club is about being under pressure and scrutiny consistently. Success breeds contempt and, when things are not going well, people want to jump on the bandwagon and talk about your lack of success.

“You have got to use that and get that siege mentality. And when you walk out there, believe in each other and say to yourselves, ‘This is what we are going to do, it is about us and what we can achieve’.
“The players have to get their heads down and become a unit.”
One of the many criticisms aimed at the current crop is that there are no leaders.
For Cole, instead of the players looking round for one, they need to take it upon themselves to be that person, every one of them.

He said: “In my day we were all captains in our own right and you had to lead your own ship.

“When we crossed that white line and looked at each other we knew we all wanted to win. In fact, we had some teams beat when we were in the tunnel.”
The us-against-the-world mentality that Sir Alex Ferguson forged drove his team to 13 Premier League titles and that memorable Treble in 1999.
Yet Cole never did quite get the animosity towards Manchester United.
Or the glee that greeted their  failings, like on the final day in 1995 when Cole himself was denied time and again by West Ham goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko and the title went to Blackburn.
Now delight grows with every season the club fails to get back to the very top.
Harry Maguire summed it up after Saturday’s 3-1 win at Everton.
He said: “People don’t want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we’ve had in the past.”

Cole is a United legend after helping them to the famous Treble in 1999Credit: Popperfoto – Getty
Cole remembers moving from a side much loved around the country in Newcastle to a completely different environment when he travelled away with Manchester United.
Cole said: “At first I did not understand why  people disliked Manchester United so much. I still don’t.
“Every team wants to win the big prizes. Why dislike the team that wants to do that season in, season out?
“But I suppose success does that. If you are successful, people seem to dislike you.
“Success seems to be frowned upon, questioned, scrutinised. Then people want to chip away at you if you make mistakes.”
Ferguson described West Ham’s performance that day in 1995 as an “obscene” effort. Recognising that a team with nothing to play for were simply desperate to stop  United.
It is something the club still have to live with even if they have not been relevant in terms of a title chase since 2013.

Cole said: “Being at United at times is not easy. Even if the club have not won the league for seven years, every opponent still raises their game against you.
“You have to match that. When I was at Manchester United the players understood what the club was about, that you always had to prove yourself.
“This team has to find that consistency. They go to Paris Saint-Germain and get an unbelievable result and then come back to the league and not play well.
“You are just not sure what team is going to turn up. Once they get that consistency it will breed confidence.”
Cole hit 121 goals in 275 games for Manchester United, winning five titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.
Only now in writing his autobiography has he had the chance to properly look back on all he achieved.
He said: “I never enjoyed it as much as I should have done. The mentality when we won a trophy was, ‘Right, what can we win next?’.”
A mentality that served him and Manchester United very well.

Cole’s autobiography comes out on ThursdayCredit: Mark Robinson – The Sun
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO VARD
SIR ALEX FERGUSON would have subbed Andrew Cole after 20 minutes if he played like modern-day strikers.
All that possession, dropping deep and build-up play? Fergie would not have put up with it. Just get in the box and score.
Manchester United legend Cole, 49, said: “The game has evolved so much and people want to play a certain way.
“I was watching a game with a mate the other day and I said to him ‘If I was playing like that, the boss would have hooked me after 20 minutes’.
“Centre-forwards just don’t seem to make runs in behind any more and stretch the game. People are able to talk about ‘high lines’ because nobody wants to run in behind.
“Even Harry Kane is dropping deep. It is all about weaving patterns and trying to get in that way.”
There is one exception and at 33, he is currently the Premier League’s joint top scorer with eight goals, while his team are topping the table — Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.

Cole said: “I just don’t know how he has kept his pace at his age.
“They say you lose a yard as you get older but he seems to have gained one and that is his biggest strength. Centre-halves do not like someone who has that pace and Leicester play to his strengths.
“He is scoring, running in behind and continuing to terrorise teams.”
Cole also believes Vardy’s decision to quit England duty is benefitting him.
While many of the Prem’s exhausted players drag themselves off for internationals, Vardy will be able to recharge his batteries over the next fortnight.
It was a decision Cole made too, frustrated, like Vardy, at getting call-ups but not enough game time.
He added: “He has done what he thinks is right for him and his family and is being proved right.”
Fast Forward: The Autobiography: The Hard Road to Football Success by Andrew Cole is published this Thursday, November 12, and available to pre-order now (Hodder & Stoughton, £20).

But a source said their on-off relationship was toxic for a while.
They explained: “She’s signed to rent a new flat in Manchester city centre.
“She did it before the alleged assault and kept it a secret from him. This break-up was on the cards for at least a month.
They’ve been rowing constantly. The bottom line is she just can’t trust him.”

The latest row is thought to have been sparked by Giggs, 46, messaging other women.
Giggs and Kate, 36, have split six or seven times in the past, said the source.

Paul Pogba isn’t happy with Man Utd playing time or position, claims France boss Didier Deschamps

DIDIER DESCHAMPS claims Paul Pogba is not happy at Manchester United.
The French World Cup winner, 27, has been benched for the last two Red Devils games after conceding a penalty in the 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal.

Pogba, who has two years left on his contract, stated last month he dreams of playing for Real Madrid one day.
France boss Deschamps said: “Paul, I know him well and he knows the group well.
“He is in a situation with his club where he cannot be happy, neither with his playing time, nor with his positioning.

“He’s not in his best period, he has had a series of injuries and Covid, which has hit him quite hard.
“He needs to find his rhythm. We cannot, however, say that he is fulfilled in what he does at his club.”
Pogba did not start United’s games with Istanbul Basaksehir and Everton with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Donny van de Beek, Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes.
But Deschamps, whose France side face Finland in a friendly on Wednesday before Nations League games against Portugal and Sweden, hopes a change of scene will help the midfield ace rediscover his form.

Deschamps added: “With me, there is no such concern but I try to manage it. When a player is in discomfort in his club, obviously, he is happy to play for France.

He is in a situation with his club where he cannot be happy, neither with his playing time, nor with his positioning
France boss Didier Deschamps on Paul Pogba

“He will tell me about his feelings and as I know him very well, it will go in a  positive direction. Even if it is also up to him to make all his efforts.”
Meanwhile, Phil Neville has branded Old Trafford boss Solskjaer’s decision to leave Pogba out as ‘disgraceful’.
The England women’s chief said: “I think it’s absolutely disgraceful that Pogba can’t get in that team.
“For United to win a league, for United to be successful, for United to play the style of football that Ole wants them to play, then Pogba has to play.
“You play one of them  Matic, Fred or McTominay and then you play Pogba with Fernandes.”

When asked if Pogba can be trusted in that deep role, Neville admitted: “Probably not no.
“But I’d rather go out there and score goals, go out there and go for the win playing the Manchester United way with Pogba in the team.
“I know I’ve said about him wanting to leave, not wanting to be there and his inconsistencies but I still think he’s one of the best midfielders around.”

England’s Nations League clash with Iceland could be moved to neutral venue as coronavirus causes chaos

INTERNATIONAL football is in a Covid-19 crisis.
England’s upcoming Nations League clash with Iceland could now be moved to a neutral venue because of the latest restrictions.

After The Sun on Sunday exclusively revealed disruption fears over the Government’s new Covid travel ban, the Prem advised clubs to stop their stars reporting for international duty in Denmark to avoid 14-day quarantine periods.
But the situation worsened last night when Italian authorities ruled out Serie A stars joining up with their countries as they would also have to quarantine on their return.
That means Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku would miss Belgium’s forthcoming games, including Sunday’s NL tie with the Three Lions.
Scotland’s Euro 2020 play-off opponents Serbia have also had their plans thrown into chaos with SIX players ruled out.

England boss Gareth Southgate expects to learn this week whether the game with Iceland on Wednesday week can go ahead in light of the latest travel restrictions with Denmark.
The travel ban does not currently cater for elite sport, meaning the Iceland match at Wembley could be off — as the Scandinavians are due to play in Denmark three days earlier and could be blocked from arriving in the UK.
The FA hope the Government will make a U-turn and allow sports stars travelling in a bubble to enter England.
But in case there is no backing down, the FA are looking at potential venues outside the UK which could stage the Iceland clash.

The Danish FA have stated Prem stars including Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel, Andreas Christiensen of Chelsea and Jannik Vestergaard of Southampton will not be involved in Wednesday’s friendly against Sweden.
Coach Kasper Hjulmand has already called up replacements as a result, as UK residents can return from Denmark but must isolate with all members of their household for 14 days.
Foxes keeper Schmeichel remains hopeful of playing for his country this month and criticised the decision as ‘political’.
Schmeichel said: “I mean it is obviously politics, I don’t think it has a lot to do with science.
“The politics of it is the Government has made a decision for now. I hope they come to their senses and see we are very protected and in a bubble.”
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho also has the same problem with Tottenham’s Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Mourinho said: “Pierre is in contact with his national team and wants to play for his national team so, of course, we want him back to play.
“So we have found a solution to protect us and protect the player. The situation is simple. Denmark’s first match is a friendly v Sweden and he does not go.

“The second game is the Nations League in Copenhagen against Iceland and he is suspended. So he is not going. The third game is in Belgium, so he stays with us and goes to Belgium for that game.”
Denmark’s Brondby friendly with Sweden also affects Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof, Newcastle full-back Emile Krafth and Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
A Danish FA statement read: “The DBU’s management has in the last few days been in dialogue with both Uefa, the English FA, English authorities and others.
“As DBU has not received the necessary answers from the English FA, national coach Kasper Hjulmand has been forced to select a number of extra players for the match against Sweden, if the English authorities do not have time to change the rules in the next few days.”
Fifa rules issued at the start of the pandemic made it clear clubs could withdraw their players from international duty if there is a risk of coronavirus infection.
The Danish situation could also affect Liverpool, who are due to play away at Danish side FC Midtjylland on December 9 in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s Serbia counterpart Ljubisa Tumbakovic has seen his side decimated for Thursday’s crunch tie.
Players from SIX Serie A clubs — Inter, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina, Genoa and Sassuolo — are ruled out, including skipper Aleksandar Kolarov and star man Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Harry Maguire says Man Utd are the ‘biggest team in the world’… that’s why everybody loves seeing them lose

HARRY MAGUIRE gets it – now he will be hoping his team-mates do too.
He gets just why the scrutiny on Manchester United is greater than at any other club… why the criticism at times seems disproportional.

⚠️ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

Harry Maguire says everyone wants to see Man Utd lose because they’re the ‘biggest club in the world’Credit: Rex Features
And why they must use that, in the way Sir Alex Ferguson did, to create a siege mentality and prove people wrong.
Maguire said: “One thing I’ve noticed in my time here – I’ve been here a year and a half – is we are the most-talked-about club in the world.
“Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world.

“People don’t want us to do well. Why? Probably because of our past success.
“We have to live up to that, we have to react to it and don’t let the negatives get into our bubble inside the training ground. Sometimes it is difficult for the lads.”
United have not been relevant with regards to the title race now for seven years. Yet still people revel in their demise.
Why? Well Maguire is right. So many clubs have suffered at their hands down the years.

Newcastle denied a title in 1996, Arsenal’s Double ripped from their hands in dramatic fashion in 1999.

Liverpool have had their noses rubbed in it as Sir Alex lifted 13 titles while they lifted none. None for thirty years until this past season.
Still now some Manchester City fans are as obsessed with their neighbour’s travails as with what their own team is doing.
This despite the fact that they have long since overtaken United on their way to the top with four titles in eight years.
Yet those barren decades when the red half would look down their noses still rankle.
So for many this is payback – and with every mis-step the glee seems to grow.
So what do you do? You actually let all those negatives in and turn them around and say ‘we’ll show you’.
Not just with a great performance here and there but every week.
Bruno Fernandes was brilliant in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Everton – scoring twice and setting up Edinson Cavani for the third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been wildly inconsistent this seasonCredit: Rex Features
That does not mean, however, that he now has a free pass at home to West Brom in the next game after the international break.
Because it certainly looked like he had given himself one against Arsenal as he sulked his way through that 1-0 loss at Old Trafford at the start of the month – not least when he was moved wide to accommodate Paul Pogba coming on.
Wayne Rooney was moved all over the park to accommodate Cristiano Ronaldo, even playing as a right wing-back once, and he just got on with the job.
And when it comes to the Champions League you cannot live off two great results against two of Europe’s best in Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig and then take your foot off the pedal against a team few had even heard of until the last year in Istanbul Basaksehir.
United can’t keep living off ‘reactions’ like this one, because every time they do they seem to drop points previously.
They cannot keep pointing to a lack of intensity for poor performance because if it does you become ‘Spursy’ and win nothing.
Captain Maguire gets it and was excellent in Saturday’s win at Goodison Park.

Bruno Fernandes was back to his best against Everton after some sulky performancesCredit: AP:Associated Press
He has been a target after a difficult start to the season before the previous internationals.
But he is back to his best and looking like the player from last season who was part of the third best defence in the league.
Indeed it was he who set the move going that lead to Cavani’s injury-time goal.
Completing the comeback after Bernard’s 19th-minute opener.
Fernandes’ header six minutes later brought the visitors level, the same man saw his cross nestle in the far corner on 32 minutes. Replays showed Marcus Rashford didn’t get a touch.
Afterwards Solskjaer raged at the fact that United had to play this game at 12.30pm having just returned from Turkey at 4am on Thursday.
He had a very good point and he used this sense of injustice to inspire his team.
He said: “The boys weren’t giving anyone a chance to take three points off us, they were so determined.”
They need that same determination against West Brom, then Southampton and then…
