Premier League clubs refusing EFL bail-out after finding out Championship owners worth £32bn

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs will further resist an EFL bail-out after learning Championship owners are worth more than £32BILLION.
Top-flight teams are coming under increased Government pressure to stump up the £250m EFL chairman Rick Parry says is necessary to keep his 72 clubs alive.

But as Parry held a further meeting with Prem chief Richard Masters to thrash out a lifeline deal, the anger of club bosses has reached new levels.
Latest figures for the 24 Championship owners, compiled from a number of financial sources, estimate the total wealth of the clubs in the upper tier of the EFL adds up to an eye-opening £32.367bn.
One senior Premier League source told SunSport: “When you look at what the Championship owners are worth between them you have to ask why they need any money from the Premier League.”
£250m IS 0.77% OF THEIR WEALTH
Meeting the £250m figure Parry has publicly stated is needed for the EFL clubs to all remain alive, would add up to just 0.77 per cent of their collective wealth.

And that sum does NOT include the £7.72bn fortune owned by steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, frequently ranked as Britain’s wealthiest person, who has one third of QPR.
The list is led by the £7bn wealth of the consortium owning Barnsley, led by Chinese-American Chien Lee.

There are also billionaire owners at Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry, Blackburn, Bristol City, Cardiff, Preston and Reading.
Prem sides do have sympathy for clubs in Leagues One and Two, who are almost entirely reliant on gate income.

But they will have private talks over the weekend to plot their next step ahead of Tuesday’s next virtual “shareholder” meeting.

Sam Mewis sends Citizens into FA Cup final after Steph Houghton’s brilliant free-kick opener

SAM MEWIS fired Manchester City into the final of the FA Cup with her first goal in English football.
Citizens skipper Steph Houghton opened the scores by curling in a peach of a free kick mid-way through the first-half.

The Gunners hit back and Jordan Nobbs drew the North Londoners level after unleashing a fierce drive from 25-yards out.
But just TWO minutes later World Cup winner Mewis slotted home thanks to Ellen White cutely nudging the ball backwards in the box after being mowed down by Leah Williamson.
City were let off in the dying moments when Katie McCabe whipped the ball across goal, but no one was there to make the crucial touch.
Boss Gareth Taylor said: “I pride myself on the football we play, someone told me we were the holders of the competition and it confused me!

“It’s great to be going back to Wembley.”
Arsenal boss Montemurro accepted defeat after her side failed to meet their usual standards.
She said: “They dominated the first 60 mins, they were better than us, we have no excuses.
“It’s disappointing because we have the capacity to play well and tonight wasn’t the night.”

And Gunners golascorer Nobbs added: “The first half they were the better team, we didn’t keep the ball well and that was the crucial point.
“In the second half we showed we could play football and if we’d done that in the first half we’d have been a better team.
“We didn’t do enough tonight so congratulations to Man City.”

Fantasy football league loser is done up like a human trophy in socially distanced forfeit

LOSER Chris Talbot is done up like a human trophy after finishing bottom of his mates’ fantasy football league.
Sprayed gold, he spent two hours on the streets of London and was even made to stand on a plinth etched with his shame.

Pal Jon Fuller, 31, from Eltham, South London, said: “We’ve done a forfeit every year including belly button piercing.
“I think Chris got away fairly lightly. He had a gold mask for getting public transport.”
The penalty had to be “something he could do socially distanced”, Mr Fuller added.
“The forfeit helps keep everyone motivated not to forget to do their team or drop out,” he said.

Jose Mourinho hopes Gareth Southgate gives Tottenham and England skipper Harry Kane a break

JOSE MOURINHO wants Gareth Southgate to respect Harry Kane — by not flogging him to death on England duty.
Kane and Tottenham pals Eric Dier and Harry Winks are today expected to be named in Southgate’s squad for three home clashes in the space of just seven days — against Wales, Belgium and Denmark.

Spurs boss Mourinho, who worked with Three Lions No 2 Steve Holland at Chelsea, said: “I believe Gareth and Steve care about the players.
“And I don’t think they want to be connected with something that can be a consequence of this week plus the three matches that the national team haswhich is obviously too much — especially for my players.
“So I don’t speak with Gareth, I don’t speak even with Steve and, of course, with Steve I am a very good friend of his.
“I just let them do their job the way they want to.

Hopefully, Gareth and Steve understand what happened with Tottenham players this week… but I’m not going to call, I’m not going to beg.
    Jose Mourinho

“I just leave with them also the respect they must have to their players — because the players are our players but are also their players.
“So, hopefully, Gareth and Steve understand what happened with Tottenham players this week and they respect the players.
“That’s just my hope — but I’m not going to call, I’m not going to ask, I’m not going to beg. I’ve the utmost respect for them.”
England captain Kane, 27, has started all of Spurs’ three Premier League games so far this season.

He also came on in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup shootout win over Chelsea and featured in both Europa League qualifiers.

On top of that, Kane played all but 12 minutes of England’s two Nations League ties last month.
So Mourinho wants his star striker used sparingly.
He said: “When Kane is fit, he also should start every game for Tottenham.

“But he didn’t against Chelsea, this is the point.
“When you have such a player and want to win every match, you play him. But you just can’t do it.”
Spurs are trying to wrap up a loan deal for Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius, 25.

Paramedics’ football match abandoned after player breaks leg in ‘brutal tackle’

A PARAMEDICS’ football match was abandoned — after a leg-break tackle sparked fury on the pitch.
Crews are said to have squared up in the Emergency Services Football League’s first game.

A witness said: “It looked like a brawl was going to kick off.
“The ref tried to calm them down but had to call it off. It wasn’t a great advert for our emergency services.”
Trouble flared in the 39th minute of last Friday’s clash between the West Midlands and North West Ambulance Services.
A “brutal tackle” on North West’s Rich Thorpe broke his leg, sparking “half an hour” of chaotic scenes.

A Manchester medic tweeted after the game in Ashton-under-Lyne: “You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Breaking someone’s leg, then kicking off.”

West Mids Ambulance Service denied any fight.
Both teams said the game was abandoned because a player suffered a serious “leg injury”.
Prison officers, cops and firefighters also compete in the newly launched league.

Premier League clubs hope hiring BICYCLES could be key to ending coronavirus fan ban

TOP-FLIGHT clubs are coming up with schemes to end the fan ban.
And one of the ideas is hiring out bikes for supporters to get to games.

Premier League officials were left fuming when the Government canned plans to allow fans back into stadiums this weekend amid a spike in Covid-19.
Though it is accepted outdoor venues with strict social distancing measures are relatively safe, ministers have concerns about those travelling to games on public transport.
Clubs know they have to come up with suitable proposals to convince public health officials it is safe enough for fans to be allowed back in.
Ideas include allocating extra car parking space and liaising with train companies to provide enough services to allow for social distancing.

But having more safe bike stores and even hiring out cycles is also high on the list.
It follows Prem sides vowing NOT to bail out the cash-strapped EFL.
The 20 top-flight clubs snubbed Government pleas to fund a £250million rescue package being demanded by EFL chairman Rick Parry.

Parry warns his 72 sides face going to the wall without   Government   help.

But top-flight giants feel they have ALREADY given Championship clubs in particular plenty of cash.
Meanwhile, ten people at Premier League clubs — including players — tested positive for Covid-19 between September 21-27.
That’s the highest weekly number recorded since the start of the season, as positive tests rise following just three or four in each of the last three weeks.

Gareth Bale backed to rediscover form with Tottenham as Ryan Giggs hopes to have superstar at best for Euros

RYAN GIGGS is confident Gareth Bale will be at the peak of his powers for the Euros after ending his Real Madrid hell to join Tottenham.
A minor knee injury will keep Bale out of Wales’ three away games this month — a friendly with England at Wembley next Thursday, before the Nations League double-header against Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria.

When fit, he can expect plenty of game-time during his season-long loan at Spurs after being frozen out by Real manager Zinedine Zidane.
And Giggs reckons that means the 31-year-old will be much fitter, sharper and even better at next summer’s finals.
Wales boss Giggs said: “He will play more regularly than he did at Madrid. It doesn’t matter what quality and experience he possesses, it’s always better when you are playing — especially in the international arena when you have two games in a short space of time.

“To play a game and then go again is very difficult.
“It’ll be so much better if he is playing regularly. He will be sharper, will be able to play those two games.
“He’s at a club he knows well, with a very good manager, and he’s said it’s like going back home.
“It’s a good move for Gareth, it’s good for Spurs and good for the Premier League in general, to have someone like that who we can watch every week.”

Bale was not named in Giggs’ 27-man squad and will remain with Spurs in a bid to build up his fitness for their Prem clash against West Ham on October 17.

    3

The Dragons’ talisman suffered his injury during the 1-0 win in Finland on September 3, before playing the full 90 minutes against Bulgaria three days later.
But Giggs has no regrets over selecting Bale for the 1-0 Cardiff victory. He added: “At the time there wasn’t a problem with the knee, just a bit of a knock. Just after Bulgaria it flared up.
“Now he wants to get it right. He’s just got on the grass this week, so it’s not too far away from when he’s able to play.”

Rob Holding beat the odds as a kid so don’t bet against him pipping Saliba and Gabriel to Arsenal spot

ROB HOLDING is used to defying the odds.
From plying his trade in amateur soccer schools in Greater Manchester to being thrown into the deep end during the most testing of short-term loans at Bury aged 19.

He was not supposed to even make it to the Premier League, let alone produce stellar 90-minute performances at Wembley to lift two FA Cups.
Now, he has another challenge — proving he is good enough to be Arsenal’s first-choice centre back amid Mikel Arteta’s North London  transformation.
Holding is no longer up and coming having turned 25 last month, and with the signings of young stars Gabriel and William Saliba he has a serious fight on his hands.
But those who know Holding the best know that’s exactly how he likes it.His footballing development began as a six-year-old at Stalybridge Celtic Juniors — a volunteer-run soccer school in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The odds were stacked against him, mixing it with around 300 kids across 29 teams.
Scouts from around the area would often pop in to spot the next superstar.Holding  certainly was not one of those but he was highly regarded.
At a presentation night in Mossley back in 2003, he was described glowingly in the programme.

It read: “Tall, strong defender who leads by example. Solid in the tackle he also has an awesome shot. Always seems to have time.”
Former Stalybridge chairman Gary Pearce remembers: “People would come to me and praise him specifically every week, not that he was a real stand-out.
“But we would have Bolton scouts come up every other week. One week they picked him out, and the rest is history.

    3

Rob Holding stood out from the crowd as a youngster with Stalybridge Celtic
“We get a lot of kids gather interest from these scouts but normally they get cast aside. It is such a kick in the teeth for them.
“But with Rob, he was unique in that regard. It doesn’t happen very often that players around here are kept on let alone play in the Premier League.
“I was involved with Stalybridge for 27 years and Rob is the first and only one to get to the Premier League.
“It is once in a blue moon to have a player at that level.”

Holding’s rise through the ranks at Bolton was not straightforward.  Inconsistent performances saw some question his ability to make it into the first team.
He was sent on loan to League Two with Bury in March 2015.
He played just 11 minutes during a brief sub appearance away to Cambridge alongside a 23-year-old Nick Pope.
Returning to Bolton disillusioned and considering his future with the club, manager Neil Lennon handed him a new contract, and ultimately, a new lease of life.
He matured on and off the pitch, and found a rhythm in an otherwise horrid relegation-bound 2015-16 season that saw a Player of the Season award, and an unlikely approach from Arsenal.

Former Gunners’ first-team coach Neil Banfield knew Holding had the potential to become a Premier League defender when he saw his gangly 6ft 2in frame lumber through the doors at London Colney.
He recalls: “We had good scouting reports of him from Steve Rowley. There were a few top clubs interested in Rob at the time.
“But when Steve sees someone he likes and gets his claws in, he will rarely let go until he gets what he wants. He likes a good battle for a player.
“Rob was very highly regarded by Steve and he ranked him right up there with his other finds like Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Gael Clichy.
“We instantly saw Rob’s qualities, and as Arsene Wenger would always do, if he sees something in you then you are in and away you go.

He was a bit frail in his physique, but he always competed in training against guys much bigger than him and that’s what we loved about him
    Ex-Arsenal first-team coach Neil Banfield

“As soon as he walked through the door he looked like a proper centre-back but he could play as well.
“When he first joined he was a bit frail in his actual physique, but he always competed in training against guys much bigger than him and that’s what we loved about him.”
A major knee injury in 2018 damaged  Holding’s speedy progress into the first team and Banfield worked hard with him mentally to ensure his head did not drop.
Banfield, who is now first-team coach at QPR, said: “Now he has filled out, but he isn’t all brawn and no brains. He is so inquisitive.

“He would pester Steve Bould  constantly to learn off him. He would always ask about opposition players.”
Banfield added: “He needs a good run of games with Arsenal to stand up and say to Mikel Arteta: ‘I will be your first-choice centre-half’.
“And once he gets that run, he should be pushing for an England call-up. It is just up to him whether he takes that chance.”
