England dressing room left raging at Steve Hodge after he swapped shirts with Diego Maradona after Hand of God goal

ENGLAND’S dressing room was raging after Diego Maradona had knocked them out of the World Cup in Mexico.
The air was blue and the FA officials were being told to go to Fifa and demand a replay because of Maradona’s 1986 ‘Hand of God’ goal.

It was not just the Argentinian cheat who was the subject of their ire,  though.
So too was Steve Hodge who had swapped shirts with Maradona  after the match.
Hodge, the ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder, still has the shirt, which  is believed could now be worth more than £500,000.

But, having sliced his clearance in the build-up to Maradona’s handball goal, the act he also had hold of that No 10 shirt in the dressing room was too much for his team-mates.
Former Arsenal full-back Kenny Sansom recalled: “Certain words were said in the dressing room.
“It was an angry place to be because we felt we’d been cheated, could  have got to the final and maybe won it.
“People like Ray Wilkins — who was one of the nicest men you could meet —  was going berserk at the FA  people, saying we should get the game replayed.

“Some of us had a go at Steve Hodge asking why he wanted Maradona’s shirt when he was a cheat.

“But I’ve since heard what it’s worth and now we all wish we’d got it!”
Hodge was rooming with Peter Reid and took the shirt out of his bag when they got back to the team hotel.
Reid had been left trailing in Maradona’s wake as he chased him in vain on the way to his amazing solo  second goal.
Former Everton and Manchester City star Reid said: “When we were in the hotel, he got the shirt out with the  No 10 on it and says, ‘What about that then?’
“So not only has Maradona  battered me and handled one in, I’ve got Hodge showing me his shirt.
“Suffice to say, I wasn’t best pleased and I gave Hodgy the biggest b******ing he’s ever had in his life.
“But they say it’s worth a few quid so maybe he had the last laugh.”  Hodge, who called his autobiography ‘The Man with Maradona’s Shirt’, said: “After the game I just thought ‘that’s the end of it’ and decided I’d try  and get Maradona’s shirt.
“I saw him coming and tug on my shirt and he took his off  and swapped with me. It was as simple as that and over in ten seconds.  I’ve no  idea if he kept my shirt or not.
“I have no hatred towards him. I blame the linesman for not spotting the handball.”
The Maradona shirt has been on display in the  National Football Museum  to mixed reactions from England supporters.
But Argentina fans have made pilgrimages to see it on trips to this country.
Hodge added: “Would I ever sell it? I’m not sure really, I quite like it.”

Recalling the quarter-final match in Mexico City, England star Reid said: “We opted not to man-mark him — thank God I wasn’t given that job.
“Belgium tried it in the semi-final with Eric Gerets, who was a great player, and he still tore them apart. He was one of those players, whatever way you went about, if he was playing well on the day he was very, very difficult to stop.
“We felt a bit cheated with the first —  but the second goal was magnificent.
“They were dancing in the tunnel, it really went off,  and I think Terry Butcher steamed into them. It was quite lively afterwards.
“But, quite simply,  Maradona is one of the best  players to walk the planet.
“Being an Englishman we’ve got some regrets about the handball but he was a great, great footballer.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta orders Nicolas Pepe to prove he’s learned his lesson after Leeds headbutt in Molde clash

NICOLAS PEPE has been ordered to prove tonight that he has learned his lesson following Sunday’s red mist at Elland Road.
Arsenal’s £72million record signing will lead the line in chilly Norway for their Europa League Group B clash with Molde.

Manager Mikel Arteta insists he has forgiven the hot-headed winger after Pepe apologised for being sent off for headbutting Leeds’ Ezgjan Alioski.
And Arteta dismissed suggestions the red card could be the end of the Ivorian’s Gunners career.
The Spaniard said: “I don’t like that type of statement because there is no way  there is a threat to his time here.
⚽ Read our Arsenal live blog for the latest news from The Emirates

“We all have disappointments and reactions in our playing careers and obviously it was frustrating to be playing with ten men for a long time.
“But Nico had a really good reaction with the way he apologised and understood his responsibilities. Hopefully we all see the player we want against Molde.
“This club has made  a huge investment in him and people obviously expect a lot from him because of his quality.
“It is the most difficult thing to be consistent when you have to create, unlock the door, score goals and make assists.

“But that is why he is here and now he needs to embrace that challenge and go for it.

“Nico needs to feel that myself and the club are going to protect him and that we are going to give him time to adapt to the Premier League, a new city, a new language and a new environment.
“I will give him my full support all the time but I am also going to be very demanding with him because I know what he can do and he needs to show that every week.
“There are certain aspects that he can do better but I cannot fault his efforts at all.
“His stats show that the way he is working and trying for the team are the best since he’s been at the club.
“We all make mistakes when the heat is on and it’s about how you react and what you learn as an individual.
“Nico did what he did, he apologised personally and publicly and now it’s time to move on.”

Victory on Molde’s artificial pitch this evening will secure Arsenal’s Europa League qualification with two group games still to play.
And they really could do with a win after struggling in the Premier League in recent weeks.
Arteta claimed: “The margins are minimal and teams are winning league games with one or two shots on target.
“We want to improve our results, of course, but there are also aspects of our play that make me really enthusiastic and optimistic.
“When I see the young talent that we work with at this club and the future we can produce for them, it gets me really excited.
“So when you have the chance to qualify early, you have to grab that chance because you never know what’s going to happen in the other games. And this would really help with squad management in December.”

Van de Beek must have thought ‘I’m a redundant footballer…get me out here’ but now he could be key to Man Utd’s plans

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to have found the key to getting 11 stars working together on the pitch.
Donny van de Beek must have been thinking ‘I’m a redundant footballer . . . get me out here’ since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer.

But he was king of the castle in United’s 4-1 Champions League win over Istanbul Basaksehir and offered a vision of a bright future for the team.
In what was only his fifth start, the deep-lying Dutchman offered the link between front and back that the Red Devils have been missing.
What it also crucially did was give Bruno Fernandes more freedom to do damage further forward.

No longer did he have to keep dropping deep to get the ball and get things moving because Van de Beek was doing that.
The £40million signing was answering his manager’s call to keep things simple with passing and movement that made United tick over.
No longer did Fernandes feel like he needed to do the job of two men.
Van de Beek said: “It worked really well. Some games I play No 10 and sometimes the coach needs me in the control position. That is fine for me because when I played at Ajax, I was playing in those positions, so it is OK.”

There will be sterner tests than Wednesday night to come. But there is nothing to suggest the son of Ajax cannot reproduce this form at any level.
United great and TV pundit Rio Ferdinand said: “He is the one player in the squad who is happy playing one-touch, two-touch, keeping it simple.

“He sacrifices parts of his game for other people to flourish – and in any great team you need players like that, who make other players tick. Bruno benefited from having him in the team.”
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes added: “He is very aware of what Fernandes wants to do with the ball.”
Solskjaer has been holding back the 23-year-old in the belief he is physically not ready for the demands of the domestic league.
He has started three European games and two in the EFL Cup — but none in the Prem.
Yet with a Fred or Scott McTominay next to him in a two in front of the back four, Van de Beek can work his magic.
As Solskjaer himself said: “Donny’s a different type of central midfielder, he can run forward if you have Scott in there.”

Fernandes certainly enjoyed his freedom further forward once again, proving he is more than a penalty taker when it comes to goals.
His brace took him to 21 goals in 35 appearances for United since joining from Sporting Lisbon last January.
That is the quickest a Red Devils midfielder has hit the 20-goal mark. So now a visit to fifth-placed Southampton awaits on Sunday. Van de Beek is ready. Is Solskjaer ready to pick him?

Man Utd hero Rashford to be honoured with special award at Sports Personality of the Year for work fighting poverty

MARCUS RASHFORD is to be honoured with a Special Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
But the Manchester United and England striker, 23, will not be included in the shortlist for the main prize.

The Special Award has been made on behalf of the judging panel in recognition of Rashford’s exceptional impact outside of sport, in which he successfully campaigned for free school meals for kids during school holidays.
Director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater said: “Marcus’ endeavour to give a voice to those who find themselves in a situation that he too is familiar with has been greatly admired and the panel wanted to ensure he was recognised for that.
“In a year that has been challenging for everyone, but particularly vulnerable families, he has gone above and beyond to transcend his sport and make a real difference.

“This award is a tribute to a remarkable young man.”
SPOTY rules did not allow Rashford’s crusade to be included in the nominations for the main award because that is based on sporting achievement.
Rashford will receive his gong at the Salford event on December 20.
The England striker was named the Pride of Britain earlier this year after the success of his campaign to extend free school meals.

He has also launched the Marcus Rashford Book Club which is aimed at encouraging youngsters to read – especially those from vulnerable and under privileged backgrounds.
Rashford is not just excelling off the pitch though with the United striker scoring a penalty in their 4-1 win against Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday in the Champions League.
And the role model can now look forward to getting his hands on the award next month for the work he has accomplished outside of football.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed clubs will be allowed up to 4,000 fans from next Wednesday — depending on the tier level of Covid-19 in the area
The EFL plans to reschedule next week’s midweek games and ensure all clubs that can welcome fans from Wednesday are able to cash in.
There were fears fans would be banned from singing and have to wear masks in their seats.
But SunSport understands masks will only have to be worn entering or leaving the stadium and on concourses.

Social-distancing measures will be enforced, with no physical contact with other fans who are outside their social bubble.
Clubs will be told to ensure steward police the regulations with fans risking being kicked out if they ignore the rules.
Spectators are expected to promise they will not attend if they have Covid symptoms or are asked to isolate.
The final regulations are due to be signed off tomorrow when the Government will outline which areas of the country will be in specific tiers.

EFL chairman Rick Parry described the initial return of supporters as “a welcome start” which could be a “lifeline” for clubs in League Two.
But Parry added: “There is a lot to do quite quickly.
“We’ve got to make sure the clubs and fans behave responsibly.”
The restrictions mean Rotherham, in tier three before lockdown, may still not be allowed fans at all.

Long-term, it’s not viable to operate at those sort of levels. It would see us operating at a matchday loss
    Paul BarberBrighton chief exec

Millers’ chairman Tony Stewart said: “It is good news for a few — but not for a lot.
“Some fans will be doing backwards somersaults and if we are allowed fans it will be a nice fight to be one of the 2,000 or so. Match day is an occasion, not just a game.”
Brighton chief exec Paul Barber believes the move will be “more symbolic than financial” for Premier League clubs.
He added: “Long-term, it’s not viable to operate at those sort of levels. It would see us operating at a matchday loss.
“We have prepared for fans returning up to 25 per cent of our capacity, which would be much closer to 7,000 to 8,000.”

Liverpool exploit loophole in Premier League’s coronavirus rules as Mo Salah returns just FIVE days after positive test

LIVERPOOL will benefit from a loophole in the Premier League’s Covid-19 rules which saw Mo Salah return just FIVE days after a positive test.
Salah is in line to play in tonight’s Champions League clash against Atalanta after being able to start training again on Monday.

That is despite Prem rules stating stars cannot train or play for ten days after a positive test.
SunSport has learned league bosses have blurred those lines — claiming they actually mean ten days from an INITIAL positive test.
Salah had two positive tests, the second coming on Wednesday last week, after going away with Egypt.
Yet Government rules clearly say the quarantine period is taken from the point of each test — not from an ‘initial’ one.

UK law states:  “If you have symptoms, the ten days starts from when they started. If you have not had symptoms, the ten days starts from when you had the test.”
Liverpool have done nothing wrong and Salah’s return was cleared by the Prem. Uefa allow a player to play after a week’s quarantine period.
But it does now leave league guidelines open to scrutiny.
Prem chiefs will deal with each Covid issue on a case by case basis — led by medical advice.

The league has admitted that there may be examples where one person is dealt with differently to another – even though Appendix 14 of their regulations appear to make the rules clear.

They state: “Each Club must ensure that: (i) all PDP Persons comply with Government guidance regarding management of COVID-19 symptoms experienced by them or any member of their household, including any ‘test and trace’ guidance or policy implemented by Government
“(ii) in the event that a PDP Person develops symptoms of COVID-19 at any point: a. they self-isolate for ten days or until symptoms resolve (whichever is the later); and b. members of the PDP Person’s household self-isolate for 14 days.”
They were happy for Salah to return as he had subsequently provided a negative sample.
Yet Conor Coady could not play for Wolves on Monday as he was self-isolating, despite never testing positive.
