Jesse Lingard targets Euros with England after joining West Ham from Man Utd in loan transfer

JESSE LINGARD hopes his West Ham switch revives his chances of playing in this summer’s Euros.
The Manchester United midfielder joined the Hammers on loan on Friday after making just three appearances for the Red Devils this season.

Lingard, 28, who won the last of his 24 England caps over 18 months ago, has made the move south in search of regular football.
And he hopes that gives him the chance to catch the eye of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate and push his claims for an international recall.
Lingard said: “It’s always good to have goals and that’s one of mine, to play in the Euros.
“But for now it’s about West Ham and helping the team.

“For me at my age, it’s all about regular football and getting that rhythm.

“As you saw a couple of seasons ago, once I get a run of games, the goals start coming — and that’s what I want to bring to the team.”
Lingard has been reunited with former United boss David Moyes but his move was sealed too late for him to play against Liverpool today.

Speaking to West Ham TV, he added: “I’ve always had to prove myself,  so it’s normal.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel vows to knock Jurgen Klopp off his perch after following him to England

THOMAS TUCHEL has warned German rival Jurgen Klopp: I’m going to knock you off your perch.

Tuchel claims he can dent Klopp’s reputation.
He said:  ”Let’s try to make things a bit more complicated for him.
“I’m not sure I should set my goal for myself, because he is Jurgen and he has found his place to be like he did with Dortmund.
“People love him, fans love him, his team loves him and he has the results for it.

“But we start right now, to close the gap and to take away a bit of his points and his reputation.
“With all respect and all friendship, of course.”

Despite all they have in common, former Paris Saint-German boss Tuchel speaks with less warmth about Klopp than he does for former Bayern Munich chief and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

However, Tuchel — who takes Chelsea to Anfield on March 20 — added: “Jurgen is one of the best coaches, one of the most fascinating personalities and a super, funny guy.
“Of course we have a certain history. But I was at Mainz after him. We don’t know each other as well as everybody thinks.”

Thomas Tuchel’s transformation from ‘crazy man’ to chess-style tactics grandmaster detailed by former team-mate

THOMAS TUCHEL transformed himself from “crazy man” to  chess-style tactics grandmaster.
Former team-mate Holger Betz recalls the new Chelsea boss as a commanding centre-half who was not afraid to have a go at anyone who failed to match his standards in training or a game.

Thomas Tuchel is not afraid to have a go at players if he feels they are not pulling their weightCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Betz was an up-and-coming goalkeeper at SSV Ulm in the late 1990s when Tuchel was part of the squad trying to secure promotion from Germany’s third tier to the Bundesliga.
Betz, an Ulm club legend who is now their goalkeeping coach, said: “Thomas was very tall, good at heading and technically very good.
“When he was on the field, he was a crazy man for football. He was like Wayne Rooney in being so demanding of other players.
“He was a leader, he was always talking on the pitch, shouting, organising the team.

“He was a very hard character. He always had problems with other players but I think that’s normal in this business — and he did not have personal problems with the players in the dressing room after games or training.”
Within a year of Betz joining Ulm’s first team, a knee injury forced Tuchel to quit playing at the age of just 24.
In that 1997-98 season, the club finally achieved promotion and Ulm would make it all the way to the top flight.
Tuchel later admitted: “I envied my Ulm team-mates for getting promoted soon after, I couldn’t take it.”

But former Ulm head coach Ralf Rangnick helped Tuchel redirect his frustration and his passion for the game into coaching. And more than a decade later, he and Betz crossed paths again.
Betz said: “I was playing for Ulm in the fourth tier.
“By then Thomas was head coach of Mainz but he had come to watch Mainz’s second team play against us.
“He said to me, ‘It’s good that I see you and that you are playing. It shows me I am not so old yet’.”

Tuchel as a footballer and now as Chelsea’s new manager
By that time, Tuchel was making a name for himself as he surpassed even Jurgen Klopp’s achievements at Mainz.
Ex-Montenegro midfielder Milorad Pekovic played under Klopp at Mainz and then had a season with Tuchel after he was promoted directly from the club’s youth set-up.
Pekovic said: “That happens very rarely. From the first day, it was obvious he was professional, completely dedicated and studious — that he simply knew a lot about football.
“He gained authority with his knowledge from the start. That is the case even now with big players and in big clubs, because he has football in his little finger.”
Pekovic, now head coach of FK Podgorica, spent time observing Klopp at Liverpool and Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and is well placed to compare them.
And he said: “Klopp is unique. His character and his charisma make him special, and that is something that is not learnt. He is an exceptional motivator. He created a family atmosphere in our team, a strong group.
“He has a way about him that every player feels equally important, no matter if he is a main player in the team or 20th in the team hierarchy.
“Tuchel is not such an open and approachable person. His attitude is professional, he isn’t intimate with the players.”
Their philosophies, although both place an emphasis on pressing, are also different.
Pekovic said: “Klopp gives players more freedom in the game than Tuchel. With Tuchel, football is like a game of chess. He has a plan and asks the players to stick to it, he does not rely on improvisation.
“Players who accept such demands learn a lot about football as a game, about tactics, and I am convinced that they can progress.”
Pekovic believes that if the Chelsea players are ready to listen and learn, Tuchel can do for the Blues what Klopp has done for the Reds.
The 43-year-old said: “Tuchel is great at stabilising the team and then strengthening it.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

“He did that from Mainz onwards, wherever he worked. He can do the same at Chelsea.
“He’s very ambitious, the Premier League is a great challenge for him.
“Klopp has set high standards. Tuchel has both the motivation and the knowledge to do the same things at Chelsea.”

LaLiga chief claims Fifa supremo Gianni Infantino IS behind Super League plans despite public criticism

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been branded the puppet master behind the Super League project which threatens to rip up the fabric of European football.
Infantino publicly warned players they will be banned from the World Cup and European Championships if their clubs form the proposed closed shop breakaway.

Gianni Infantino has publicly warned against a Super LeagueCredit: PA:Press Association

But LaLiga boss Javier Tebas has been handed documents circulating among would-be Super League members that he believes PROVE Infantino has been actively orchestrating the entire plan.
And the Spaniard says the Swiss leader of the world game has hidden behind a secret code name.
According to Tebas, the secret documents, which were drafted last year and have been circulating among leading clubs for weeks, point to the controlling interests of ‘W01’.
That stands, Tebas is convinced, for ‘World Number One’ — Gianni Infantino.

Tebas said: “It is obvious that Gianni Infantino has been party to meetings and hosted the club organisation to be able to work on the Super League.
“He has been working on it and has even been encouraging them to set it up.
“In the documents that we have related to the Super League there is the mention of a code name W01, which clearly refers to Mr Infantino. That is his code name.
“If I am wrong, I will apologise. But we have information and the facts seem to be there. I think people are telling me the truth.

Javier Tebas believes that Infantino has been involved in Super League talksCredit: Reuters

“In the documents there are certain dates that are being held back for the Club World Cup, each January.
“Twelve European teams, the top five from each of the two groups, with four teams playing off for the other two places.
“It’s obvious that people who are helping Real Madrid with that were not going to be providing that data unless they knew that Infantino had this information.
“He is not against it. He thought the project was OK.
“So he should urgently clarify his personal position, to explain exactly why he was at some of the meetings and encouraged the project at certain points in time.”
Tebas’ allegations come with the Costa Rica-born Spaniard suggesting Manchester United and Liverpool have made a Devil’s pact with Infantino — along with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez — that will turn football from a dream factory into a one-dimensional TV show.
He accused United owners in the form of Joel Glazer, Liverpool’s John Henry, plus Ivan Gazidis, who moved from being chief executive at Arsenal to the same role at AC Milan, of colluding with Perez and Infantino.
Fifa have consistently denied any involvement in the project, put together with the  backing of US financial giant JP Morgan.

Only last week, Infantino, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin plus the other five Confederation presidents signed a joint statement warning that any players who were part of a  breakaway would be banned from the World Cup or European  Championships.
Tebas, though, insists that Infantino’s denials, like those emanating from Old Trafford and Anfield — or should that be Tampa Bay and Boston? — are less than truthful.
Indeed, not only were the discussions ongoing through the winter, they are about to officially be made public. Tebas, 58, said: “The documents I have say it’s going to be announced in February, next month.
“It says they are going to sell the broadcasting rights in March and it’s all going to start in 2022.
“I’m not sure about that. These clubs have been involved in decisions about Champions League broadcasting rights between 2021 and 2024 and will have to break away from that.
“Some of the other clubs knew about the project, while others didn’t even know about it or that it existed.
“But a club, even if they could be against it, will say, ‘Well, let’s see what happens and what is going on because if it does come off, we don’t want to be left out’.
“Of course, it is not clear that the money exists. It’s easy to talk about it and harder to generate.
“But even if there is more money in the short or medium term for these clubs, in the longer term it is not good for football or for them.

Of course, if it is a closed league then obviously the values will go up for these clubs
    Javier Tebas

“It is interesting for the American-owned clubs, for Manchester United, Liverpool or Milan, to have US funds behind them or Inter Milan with their Chinese funds.
“Of course, if it is a closed league then obviously the values will go up for these clubs — but I do not believe the broadcasting rights will go up as much as they keep saying.
“And, more importantly, it would destroy the ecosystem and the balance of European football.”
The self-confessed Real Madrid fan added: “We believe it would cost LaLiga £1.4billion in revenue and the value of our clubs would go down by more.
“And the Premier League has double the turnover.
“So the other 14 clubs in England would lose maybe £3bn — because they can’t qualify for European competitions any more.”

Man Utd and Liverpool accused of plotting to DESTROY football with Fifa and Real Madrid amid European Super League talks

LIVERPOOL and Manchester United have been accused of plotting with Fifa and Real Madrid to ‘DESTROY’ football.
LaLiga chief Javier Tebas says the ‘greedy’ Premier League giants have spent months scheming over an ‘obscene’ £4.6billion European Super League.

The Spaniard insists United’s US owner Joel Glazer and Liverpool’s John W Henry have been working with Fifa president Gianni Infantino plus Madrid supremo Florentino Perez on plans that will ‘ruin’ the game.
Tebas stormed: “This would be a disaster for football, it would destroy the ecosystem and balance of the game in Europe.
“This whole underground project started with Infantino and Perez — but the Glazers and Liverpool were active too and held meetings.
“They have all tried to keep it secret, before the stories emerged in October and since.”

SunSport first revealed plans for a breakaway Euro Super League and how the Big Six have been offered up to £310m in ‘founder-member’ money.
That’s on top of a minimum of £130m per season to be part of a closed shop of 20 teams.
Tebas says plans could be officially launched next month — with the other 14 Premier League clubs at the risk of losing £3bn between them.

He told SunSport: “Is it just about greed? You can define that how you like — but that’s the idea.

“This Super League project is going to ruin the Champions League. That’s what they’re looking for.
“The Champions League disappears — and the money it generates, they want to divide this up between themselves.”
Man Utd legend Gary Neville branded the plans ‘obscene’, adding: “Football is going to eat itself.
“We are in the middle of a pandemic — with the game on its knees.”
Liverpool, United, Fifa and Real Madrid declined to respond to Tebas’ allegations.
But in November, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insisted he would work through the European Club Association on ‘the strengthening of existing Uefa club competitions.’
At the time, Woodward said: “The dialogue focuses on them continuing to be predominantly mid-week games, having little or no impact on the Premier League.”

Sean Dyche rules out cut-price James Tarkowski transfer despite Burnley fears of losing star on cheap

SEAN DYCHE says James Tarkowski will not be sold on the cheap even though Burnley could lose him for nothing in 18 months.
And the Clarets chief has no fears that the centre-back star will drop his standards if he does remain at Turf Moor for the rest of his contract.

West Ham have already been knocked back with a near £30million bid and Leicester are likely to make another effort to sign Tarkowski, 28, before Monday’s deadline.
But Burnley have so far resisted all offers — and Dyche has no plans to lose a man whose partnership with Ben Mee is one of the most solid in the Premier League.
Dyche said: “He’s under contract, there’s no other situation. If the money comes in, fine, but if not, the financial situation has changed radically and we’re in a very strong position.
“You have to balance the worth of the player for what they do for you, not just the worth of the market.

“It’s the job they do — and Tarky does a very good one for us.”
Tarkowski claims the current offer of another contract is “nowhere near good enough to sign”.
Yet Dyche admitted: “He has answered things very honestly and it doesn’t affect his performances.
“I can accept his  opinion so I say to him, ‘Are you ready to play?’.

“He says ‘yes’ and he’s been brilliant.”

At Sunday lunchtime the Prem’s longest-serving boss will pit his wits against a Chelsea side with the newest in Thomas Tuchel.
And Dyche, appointed in 2012, insists he is under the same pressure to deliver as anyone at Stamford Bridge — just a different kind.
He added: “You have all the staff in the offices, all the players, you have our side of things.
“We’ve all got contracts that radically change if we are in the Premier League or not.

“That is an in-house pressure in itself. I have to deliver on behalf of them, not just on behalf of the outside world. I wouldn’t remotely think Chelsea have those kind.
“I don’t think their auxiliary staff, their playing staff, their office staff are radically going to change their contractual situation.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel reveals Marina Granovskaia left him in no doubt about how to keep his job

NEW manager Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia has left him under no illusions about how to keep his job.
Frank Lampard is just the latest victim of the hire-and-fire policy that Granovskaia conducts for owner Roman Abramovich.

Title-winning bosses like Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte have all received the same treatment and Tuchel said: “She told me very clearly that if you sign for Chelsea, you need to win trophies, definitely compete for trophies.
“We can just admit it — on this level nobody steps into any competition to be second. Nobody.
“There were even managers who won titles and got sacked. One is sitting right now in front of you. It happened to me around Christmas.
“It’s like this in the end. What everyone is looking for is a nice guy, a hard guy, a trophy-winning guy . . . I don’t know . . . a good looking guy, a funny guy. That does not exist.

“At some point I hope I am the guy who can be the characteristics for an era and for a certain period in this club.”
But Chelsea do not really do eras and it is telling that Tuchel has been given only an 18-month contract.
He admitted: “I want to be very honest with you. At first, it was a concern, a little bit like, ‘Oh, why 18 months?’.
“And after one minute, I thought, ‘What does it change? If they are not happy with me, they will sack me anyway’.

“But it’s also my character to believe more in the chances than in the risks. For me personally, there’s absolutely nothing to be afraid of.”
But what about the notorious Stamford Bridge power games, the kind of competing agendas that Tuchel complained about just before he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain on Christmas Eve?

The German has a reputation for not being good at managing upwards, yet will he have to be more of a politician at Chelsea?
Tuchel said: “I hope not, because I am as far away from being a politician as being a maths teacher — because I was horrible at maths at school.
“I’m a football coach and I have absolutely the feeling, 100 per cent, that they signed me as a football coach, in a football club.”
We will see how long that lasts.
Politically speaking, it would be wise for Tuchel the football coach to find a way to get a tune out of Kai Havertz, the struggling summer arrival who, in a £70million deal, is the second-most expensive signing of the lavish Abramovich reign.
Tuchel said: “His potential is almost endless and it is the challenge for him — and I think he made a very, very brave choice.

Tuchel managed the likes of Neymar to the Champions League final last season where they were beaten by Bayern MunichCredit: AP:Associated Press
“I am a huge fan of Bayer Leverkusen. But you come from Leverkusen to Chelsea, the culture cannot be any more different.
“You come from a club where it is maybe OK to be second best or third best, where you compete to reach the top four. Then you go to a club where they talk about trophies.
“And if a club talks about winning trophies and titles so openly, there is a certain atmosphere. So it means that Kai steps not only to a different country, not only to a different club, not only to different team-mates — which in itself is all complicated and has different challenges.
“But, no, he also steps into a different culture. In a dramatic way.
“And I love it because he is out far, far from his comfort zone.”
And Tuchel has a plan for Havertz, 21. The Blues head coach said: “What I feel and hear from him is that he is a very intelligent guy, very friendly guy, very open guy, with a lot of potential — and we will push him.

“And he seems to be like the guy who needs to be pushed. We will not stop doing it.
“I think for him this league is perfect because he cannot rest.
“He has so much potential that he needs to be challenged physically also, that it is not enough that he can rely on his endless talent.
“You know in the end, for me the question is — and you see it in me — does he have this?”
At this point, Tuchel snarled and made an aggressive gesture with his hands, before adding: “Can he show his teeth when it gets tough?”
If Havertz cannot do that — and if Chelsea do not improve — then Tuchel will soon become the latest manager to be chewed up and spat out by Abramovich and Granovskaia.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard paid price for Werner and Havertz struggles… but bosses aren’t the ones picking transfers

WHEN you spend millions on players and they don’t hit the ground running, there’s only one person who carries the can.
Frank Lampard is the latest example after being sacked by Chelsea this week, when Roman Abramovich pressed the panic button yet again.

Frank Lampard was sacked in part due to the failings of his summer buys – but they weren’t his fault, says Harry RedknappCredit: Alamy Live News

Managers are barely responsible for transfers any more, according RedknappCredit: Rex Features

But anyone thinking the manager is the one responsible for the big-money signings these days has the wrong idea of modern football. That’s not how it works any more.
Years ago of course they would be the one scouting players, watching them play, basically doing the deals. Not now, though.
These days it is pretty much all down to the head of recruitment, which means you are relying on someone else’s judgment.
Chelsea spent fortunes on new players and as manager you’re under pressure — not only to play them — but for them also to be an instant success.

⚽ Read our Chelsea live blog for the very latest news from the Bridge
When they don’t, like the two Germans Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, then the buck stops with the boss.
But I’m sure Frank isn’t the one behind all the signings Chelsea have made.
I’d say the only one he was mad keen on getting was Ben Chilwell. That’s how crazy the game has become.

I listened to Jurgen Klopp the other day — together with Pep Guardiola one of the two most powerful managers in the world — being asked about Liverpool signing a new centre-back.

Klopp said he didn’t know, it wasn’t his department. This is one of the top, top managers anywhere in the game and he didn’t know?
It shows what football has now become. The most important man in the building is whoever is in charge of recruitment.
And if his judgment isn’t good, you’re in trouble.
As a manager it is impossible to go and see players like we would in the past.
You’re playing Saturday, Tuesday or Wednesday and then Saturday again. There’s very little chance.
And although you need time to build, you very rarely get it. Not at Chelsea, and that’s very sad — not because it’s Frank, I’d say the same whoever was in charge and wherever it was.
But as wrong as I think the decision was, I’d be surprised if he didn’t have an inkling of what was going to happen.
Certainly more idea than I did when I got the sack at Tottenham in 2012. That one came right out of the blue.
We finished fourth, and although we missed out on the Champions League because Chelsea won it, it never entered my mind that I could be out.
I had a year left on my contract and there were talks planned about an extension, so when they said they’d decided to go in another direction it was a massive surprise.

Timo Werner’s horror start to life at Chelsea certainly didn’t help LampardCredit: Rex Features

Thomas Tuchel has taken over from Frank Lampard as Chelsea bossCredit: Reuters
The first signs something might not be right came as I was leaving the ground after the last game of the season — and Jan Vertonghen was walking in.
I’d been to watch Vertonghen a couple of times and was quite keen on him, so thought it was a bit odd that they would sneak him in without telling me. That was why!
I didn’t get any excuse other than Spurs wanted to make a change but it would all have been agreed with the next fella beforehand — just as it always is.
When Mauricio Pochettino left, Jose Mourinho was in the next day, and he didn’t suddenly agree and sign a multi-million pound contract in ten minutes.
So the deal with Thomas Tuchel will have been done and dusted long before last week’s game against Luton. That’s just how it works.
What I do know is that he’s got a hell of a job on his hands.
They tell me he’s a great coach but if you manage Paris Saint- Germain then you win the league, it’s as simple as that.
As disappointing as it is for Frank, I’m sure there will be a good job out there for him in time — Brendan Rodgers is the obvious example for him.
Brendan was sacked by Liverpool but went away and rebuilt his reputation with Celtic, he is now doing a fantastic job at Leicester.
If Frank looks at how Rodgers came back after getting the bullet at Liverpool, he’ll know there’s no reason why he can’t do the same.
As for Tuchel? Well he gives the impression of being on the edge at the best of times — and if any job is going to shove you over the edge, then it’s Chelsea.
    LEICESTER A FOURCE

Leicester are a force to be reckoned with under Rodgers, says RedknappCredit: AP:Associated Press
LIKE most people, I can’t see beyond Manchester City or Liverpool when it comes to the likely champions.
And although Liverpool bounced right back to form at Spurs on Thursday, you have to say City are the ones playing the most impressive football.
But I’m also sticking to my opinion that this will be one of the most open title races in years, in some ways like a throwback to the 1970s.
And in terms of excitement, Leicester are up there with anyone else in the Premier League right now — they have been all season.
I love the way that Rodgers has got them playing and although they miss something when Jamie Vardy is out like now, they look good all over the pitch.
There is cover just about everywhere and they are in it for the duration.
They might not win the title again — but anyone who’s backed them to finish top four should expect to collect.
    THUMPING JACK FLASH

Harry Redknapp was delighted for Jack Wilshere after he scored for Bournemouth earlier in the weekCredit: PA:Press Association
ONE of the most pleasing things last week was seeing Jack Wilshere score for Bournemouth — I was absolutely delighted for him.
Jack is a real talent but has been unlucky with injuries or he’d have been one of the great modern-day English midfielders.
There’s no doubt that if he stays fit, he will be a great signing for Bournemouth.
With him on the pitch, they’ll have a heck of a chance of going straight back up.
It still surprises me that no one else was prepared to take a chance and sign him.
I pictured him doing a real job for an Italian club, for example.
I know if I was still managing, I’d have snapped him up.
Anyone who could get him on a pay-as-you-play deal was always getting a bargain.
Bournemouth got a glimpse of what a player they have on their hands.
If he steers clear of injuries, Jack will be priceless in getting them promoted.
