Cristiano Ronaldo will NOT need to give evidence against ex-model who accused him of rape

CRISTIANO Ronaldo will not have to give evidence against a former model who accuses him of rape, lawyers have agreed.
Kathryn Mayorga’s lawsuit will be decided by an arbitrator rather than a jury, so the star, 35, won’t have to go to court.

Ronaldo will not need to give evidence against the ex-model who accused him of rape

Ms Mayorga, 36, claims the Juventus and Portugal player attacked her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.
    He denies the allegation.
She accepted £290,000 from him and signed a non-disclosure deal after deciding not to prosecute.
The former teacher now says she was mentally unfit at the time and seeks £165,000 damages in her new civil claim.

Her bid to use papers “obtained by a hacker” said to incriminate the ex-Man United star has been dismissed.

Man City confident Kevin De Bruyne will sign new deal despite talks hitting stumbling block

MANCHESTER CITY are still confident Kevin De Bruyne will sign a new Etihad deal — despite a hitch in negotiations.
Reports in Belgium say the £54million ace is likely to reject the first offer put in front of him by his club.

He does not feel it reflects his current standing at City or his outstanding service since he signed in summer 2015.
But he has 2½ years left on his current £300,000-per-week contract — so there is no immediate rush.
City know that De Bruyne has said publicly he wants to extend his stay with them and the club are keen for that to happen too.
The 29-year-old De Bruyne has his father and lawyers leading the negotiations and is said to be frustrated at the lack of progress.

But he did not let that show on the Stamford Bridge pitch as he turned in an outstanding show against his former club Chelsea on Sunday.
He scored one and created another as Pep Guardiola’s men put on their best performance of the season so far — beating Chelsea 3-1.
City are hitting their stride after a sluggish start to the campaign and are unbeaten in 11 in all competitions.
De Bruyne said: “I think at the beginning of the season we had many difficulties, many injuries and no pre-season.

Mentally and physically, we weren’t ready for the new season. But I think over the last month we have recovered a few players and we raised our level.
    Kevin De Bruyne

“Mentally and physically, we weren’t ready for the new season. But I think over the last month we have recovered a few players and we raised our level.
“We have won a few matches and gone up a few places on the table.”
City now turn their attention to the domestic cups with a trip to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals tomorrow.
De Bruyne said: “We still have another eight games in January in all competitions.
“It’s going to be tough but I think we are ready for the battle and that is what matters. Of course, this week it has been difficult for us with some injuries and some positive cases of Covid but it is what it is.
“The team worked well and we played very well, especially defensively.”
De Bruyne was asked to play as a false No 9 in west London and it worked to great effect against Frank Lampard’s men.

KDB added: “In the first ten minutes it was a bit bizarre because I was trying to find my position.
“But after that I tried to do my job, it was a different role for me.
“With all the attacking players we have out at the moment, I did the job the manager asked me to do. I think I did a good job overall.”

Chelsea line up Thomas Tuchel as Frank Lampard’s replacement if legend fails to reverse fortunes

CHELSEA are ready to move for Thomas Tuchel if boss Frank Lampard fails to turn things around.
Lampard is under mounting pressure following an alarming dip in form — but SunSport understands he is in no immediate danger of being sacked.

Yet the sudden availability of Tuchel, following his axing by Paris Saint-Germain last month, has put Stamford Bridge chiefs on alert with a view to a possible change in the summer if results do not improve.
Chelsea’s 3-1 humbling at home to Manchester City on Sunday was their fourth defeat in six games.
Lampard is halfway through his three-year contract and insists erratic results are a natural part of his team-building process after spending more than £220million last year on six new players.

Tuchel reached the Champions League final with PSG last season and was linked with taking over at Arsenal before Mikel Arteta got the job just over a year ago.
It is understood the German, 47, is keen for his next role to be in the Premier League.
Winger Christian Pulisic admits the tension is cranking up  and that ninth-placed Chelsea need to deliver soon.
The American international, 22, said: “We’re in a tough period. It’s not going to be easy but we need to show character now.

“We have some games coming up where we need to turn it around quickly and start putting together a run of results.”

Lampard, 42, admits to working under constant ‘heat’ from his bosses in the boardroom — but he is also facing questions from within his dressing room.
There is growing frustration that some of the expensive signings in 2020 are taking too long to settle, while his team-selection policy is also raising questions.
In particular, £36.7m winger Hakim Ziyech was put straight into the line-up to face City having missed six games with injury.
Lampard says he will not tolerate anyone in his squad refusing to operate with a group mentality.
Blues owner Roman Abramovich has a history of wielding the axe relatively quickly — with Lampard the 13th managerial change since the Russian’s 2003 takeover —  but in recent times that has been tempered.
Lampard’s predecessor, Maurizio Sarri, kept his job for a season despite being hugely unpopular among  fans for his playing style.
Before him, Antonio Conte stayed in post for two years even though he would publicly criticise the club over transfers.

Frank Lampard is safe at Chelsea for now… despite all the sackings, Roman Abramovich is no mad axeman

IT’S the most wonderful time of the year.
That time when we all start trying to second-guess the intentions of Roman Abramovich, a billionaire Russian riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

Frank Lampard watched his side put in a worryingly poor display on SundayCredit: AP:Associated Press

Gone are the days of Roman Abramovich watching over every home game from his Stamford Bridge boxCredit: AP:Associated Press

A secretive oligarch, as likely to mouth off in public as Sooty bear or Marcel Marceau.
Even when Chelsea’s owner was a regular match-goer, we tended to talk about him as if he were some Old Testament God, ready to strike down under-achieving managers with lightning bolts from the blue.
Many inside Chelsea speak about him in a similar vein.
More so now that Abramovich is in exile — and they don’t even get to read his facial expressions while Chelsea are having their backsides handed to them on a plate.

The popular caricature of Abramovich is of a wildly unpredictable and ruthless megalomaniac, hiring and firing managers on a whim.
So when Frank Lampard’s team were taken apart by Manchester City on Sunday, for their fourth Premier League defeat in six games, it was easy to imagine that Abramovich — having coughed up £220million on players last summer — would instantly feel the old itch in his trigger finger.
Sure, Lampard is the club’s all-time record scorer and Champions League-winning captain.

The Blues were outclassed by Pep Guardiola’s sideCredit: AP:Associated Press

And yes, his first season had been a limited success, reaching the top four after a transfer ban.
But if you judge him by Abramovich’s unique standards, then surely Lampard is on borrowed time?
Yet the history of Abramovich’s reign is not as simple as that.
Only once in the last eight years has he switched managers in mid-season — and that was Jose Mourinho in December 2015, during that campaign of Eva Carneiro and ‘palpable discord’ and Chelsea in an actual relegation battle.
And only once has Abramovich been clearly wrong to sack a manager — when Carlo Ancelotti bought it in a Goodison Park corridor in 2011,  having finished as a  Premier League runner-up and having won the Double in free-flowing style 12 months earlier.
Even when Abramovich was firing managers at an unusually rapid rate, between Mourinho’s first sacking in 2007 and his return in 2013, he was often extremely reluctant to do so.
Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and ‘Big Phil’ Scolari — who was actually only normal size — were victims of significant shows of player power, which Abramovich had initially tried to stare down.
Two of the most vocal members of that opinionated but highly-successful dressing room were Lampard himself and, even more so, Petr Cech, who is now Chelsea’s influential, vaguely-titled ‘technical and performance advisor’.

Carlo Ancelotti was dispensed with him ruthless fashionCredit: AFP

‘Big Phil’ Scolari didn’t even last a season at the BridgeCredit: PA:Press Association
The great irony for Lampard is that he desperately needs some outspoken senior pros.
Witness Chelsea up close in this behind-closed-doors era and it is striking how quiet they are — probably the quietest team in the Premier League.
Yet the absence of strong dressing-room characters will also preclude any of Lampard’s players from rocking the boat and influencing Abramovich.
This is not to suggest that Lampard is as safe as houses.
Should Chelsea continue on their current trajectory and lose touch with the top four — and especially if they are beaten by Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League — then Lampard will not last the season. Chelsea signed six good players last summer but expected that it would take time for a new-look team to gel.
Yet Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech have regressed after showing early promise, while £70m Kai Havertz, who is only 21 and suffered a nasty bout of Covid, has made no impact so far.
Thiago Silva looked 36 against City, keeper Edouard Mendy is an upgrade on the hapless Kepa Arrizabalaga but no world-beater and Ben Chilwell has been reasonable overall.
Lampard seems unsure of his best team, has chopped and changed at Claudio Ranieri ‘tinkerman’ levels and has often made curious decisions on substitutions. Werner had been struggling at wide-left, then struggled throughout 90 minutes at centre-forward against City, while Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham were left on the bench.

Lampard’s win ratio is on a par with Andre Villas-Boas’ at ChelseaCredit: Dave Pinegar – The Sun
So Lampard, with the lowest win percentage of any Abramovich era manager other than AVB, is clearly now fighting for his job.
But it would be wrong to suggest that the Russian is being unusually soft on a club legend if he does afford Lampard more time.
Because the Premier League’s most mysterious figure is not really as mad, bad and dangerous as all that.
CLARITY ON COVID IS A MUST
SO Manchester City’s match with Chelsea went ahead despite at least six of Pep Guardiola’s players having tested positive for Covid.
Yet Fulham’s visit to Burnley was called off, despite an unspecified number of positives, believed to be similar to City’s toll.
Now City have more strength in depth than Fulham and they proved it in a spectacular first-half show at Stamford Bridge.
But that’s life — some Premier League clubs are far wealthier, and better able to cope with absentees, than others.
So are there different rules for different clubs? Or is there a specific number of Covid cases at a club which leads to a postponement? Or is the Premier League making it up as they go?
If we aren’t given any clarity, the League is likely to be mired in chaos and rancour for some time.
    FORWARD THINKING
THE last time that Manchester City looked as devastating against elite opposition as they did at Chelsea on Sunday was when they stuffed Manchester United at Old Trafford in last season’s Carabao Cup semi- final first leg.
On both occasions, Pep Guardiola operated without a recognised centre-forward and watched his  rampant side go 3-0 up by half-time.
So should we expect the same approach when City visit United for another semi tomorrow night?
Guardiola usually tries something self-consciously clever in marquee matches  but would it be cleverer to play a centre-forward or not this time?

So did Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic.
Lineker agreed with Wright, who raged against the “blatant disregard” and declared: “There should be something done about that.”

Mendy admitted three pals attended his private bash and has since apologised.
Politicians called on the Premier League to ban footballers if they breach rules.

Man City player Benjamin Mendy broke Covid rules by hosting a New Year’s Eve party

MAN City ace Benjamin Mendy hosted a party at his home on New Year’s Eve — just as five teammates were struck down with Covid.
The star admitted he may have breached rules as pals outside his household attended the bash, which came three days after Covid cases at his club forced their game against Everton to be called off.

Partygoers leave Mendy’s home just before dawn

On Boxing Day, we can reveal he sent a video to a model agency boss in London asking for him to send him “girls”.
Mendy last night apologised for breaking the Covid rules.
The news will infuriate boss Pep Guardiola who says players are reminded every day about guidelines.
It comes as the Premier League faces a crisis over increasing infections in clubs.

Today’s Burnley v Fulham clash is off because of the rise in cases. And Tottenham Hotspur slammed stars Erik Lamela, Sergio Reguillon and Giovani Lo Celso for also flouting virus rules.
A social media pic showed them with West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini, plus families among 18 people — in clear breach of Tier 4 rules on mixing indoors.
West Ham said it was “disappointed” with Lanzini who had been disciplined and “reminded of his responsibilities”.
Separately, Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic were also snapped together. The clubs opened probes into their players who are Serbia teammates.

Covidiot Mendy went ahead with the rule-breaking New Year’s Eve party despite the virus threatening to curtail the Premier League season.
    ‘MENDY IS AN IDIOT’
The Man City defender’s bash — three days after his side’s clash with Everton was postponed due to the bug — was attended by at least three people outside his household.
Mendy said he, his girlfriend, his niece and nephew — who all live with him — attended the bash.
But he admitted his girlfriend’s pal and her partner were also there, along with a chef. During the party, Mendy tweeted a message at 11.23pm urging people to take caution. It read: “Happy New Year. Take care of you and yours.”
Pictures taken outside appeared to show three girls leaving at 6am on New Year’s Day. Another trio of local women were seen outside his house at 7.45am.
Some women were spotted carrying gold-coloured balloons like one seen in the player’s £5million pad.
Mendy insisted he did not let them into his home.
One local said of the celebrations at Mendy’s home: “There was a lot of noise coming from the house and you could hear girls shouting and enjoying themselves.
“At midnight, there was an absolutely massive firework display. It must have cost a fortune and it went on for at least ten minutes.
“The partying clearly carried on until the early hours. Mendy is an idiot for breaking the rules so blatantly.”

Three Spurs stars and a West Ham ace were snapped at a party together in what appears to be a breach of coronavirus rules
Mendy had previously come under fire for holding a party at his home in October which broke the Rule of Six. The player admitted his New Year’s Eve shindig breached Covid rules because he invited three people from outside his household.
He also claimed a man and some women turned up uninvited to his home in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, but were turned away.
He has reported this breach to the club but it was unclear if it was done before or after we approached the club over the story. A club spokesman confirmed last night it was looking into the Covid breach.
Mendy’s rule breach came as it emerged he also sent a video to a modelling agent begging him to send “girls” from London to visit him in Cheshire.
Mendy, 26, sent the Instagram message on Boxing Day — the day after two team-mates had tested positive for Covid — asking for the beauties to be flown up to him. Footage obtained by The Sun on Sunday shows the £52million star, with his mask hanging below his nose, making the recording at City’s training complex.
In it, Mendy, who is wearing a club training top, tells the agent: “You good bro. You know with all the girls — you have some I want.”
Going behind his girlfriend’s back, the £90,000-a-week player adds: “But I’m scared because my girl is from London and she knows too much girl to know something and say.”
Mendy declared he wanted a “big bum Latina” in one message to the agent.
He also said: “Show me some (girls) if I tell u 2/3 days before they can come.”
    ‘COMPLETE DISREGARD’
There is no suggestion the agent sent any girls to Mendy. He recorded his plea just hours after City players, Kyle Walker, 30, and Gabriel Jesus, 23, tested positive. City’s clash with Everton was axed two days later.
During the filming, a replay commentary of City’s Boxing Day win over Newcastle appears to be playing in the background.
In it, the commentator mentions absent striker Jesus, saying: “Gabriel Jesus would have scored by now in the game on Tuesday.” Jesus had netted in the third minute of the club’s League Cup win at Arsenal on Tuesday, December 22.
The model agency boss said: “I was stunned when he sent me this. It shows a complete disregard for his and other people’s safety.
“He must know about the dangers from being a top player at a top club and it’s shocking that football is taking so many precautions and he is acting like this.
“He had contacted me before asking about girls, and wanted them to fly up from London to Manchester and stay with him. I was not that surprised by him going behind his girl’s back as that’s what footballers do, but was shocked by him not worrying about Covid.”
Mendy, who joined City from Monaco in 2017, made his request when London and the South East were in “stay at home” Tier 4 measures.
Manchester and Cheshire were in “very high alert” Tier 3 at the time but have since moved up a tier. Both tiers bar people meeting people from other households indoors.
The bash ended just hours before the club manager Pep said in a press conference that City reminded players daily to follow guidelines.

On Boxing Day, we can reveal he sent a video to a model agency boss in London asking for him to send him ‘girls’
He said: “We spoke every day to the players — be careful, stay at home, don’t be in contact other people and do what you have to do.
“Follow the scientists and the measures we have to follow, try to follow them.”
City closed their training ground for a deep clean after confirming five positive Covid cases, including Walker and Jesus. It has since reopened.
Mendy had previously used social media in a bid to help curb the spread of the virus.
In May, he posted a picture of himself and other City players including Kevin de Bruyne, 29, and Riyad Mahrez, also 29, as they trained while keeping to social distancing recommendations. He captioned it: “Safety first.”
In the same month in an interview published on the club’s website, Muslim Mendy said he used lockdown to focus on his religion and the holy month of Ramadan.
He added: “I have tried to develop myself and learn every day. First of all, I was just working out and training, but then I wanted to learn new stuff as well so I started painting and I like it now. I know that this is a difficult moment, but it is going to be better.”
On March 12, before the first national lockdown, it was announced Mendy was self-isolating after a family member was admitted to hospital displaying Covid symptoms.
Covid expert Doctor Bharat Pankhania, senior lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical school, said: “Human contact is what is driving this infectious disease.

“It is important that celebrities, like everybody else in society, limits contact.
“That is the most important thing, especially at a time when we have a new strain of the virus. Thankfully, the new strain does not appear to cause more severe infections.
“But it does appear to be more infectious and transfer more easily. If you look at graphs of infection, infections start in the young and are transferred upwards to people in their 30s and 40s and then ultimately to 60 to 80 year-olds who are more at risk.
“If you have more cases, more people will be in hospital, and some of them will die. But there is no guarantee that, just because you are young and fit, that you will fight off the virus.
“Some young people do succumb to this virus. But they also act as conduits and pass it on.

“Celebrities, like everyone, need to set an example.”
A spokesperson for Benjamin Mendy said “Benjamin and his partner allowed a chef and two friends of his partner to attend his property for a dinner party on New Years Eve. Ben accepts that this is a breach of COVID-19 protocols and is sorry for his actions in this matter.
“Ben has had a Covid test and is liaising with Manchester City about this.”
Man City said in a statement they were “disappointed to learn of the transgression and will be conducting an internal investigation.”

Josh Kelly out to remind Sunderland fans what success looks like after being booted from academy

JOSH KELLY wants to put smiles back on the faces of Sunderland fans — with all the flair that got him axed from his boyhood club.
The 26-year-old welterweight will be the first major British boxing act of 2021 when he aims to dethrone David Avanesyan for his European title on January 30.

With the former Premier League force languishing in League One, it has not been a fun few years for Mackem fans.
But silky 2016 Olympian Kelly is out to remind his fellow Black Cats what success looks like.
He said: “When I was a kid I watched Prince Naseem Hamed, Ray Leonard, Willie Pep and I loved how they boxed and wanted to do it the way I wanted to do it.
“I was the same at football. When I was in the Sunderland academy I wanted to have the ball and take people on and they would always tell me I have to pass it.

“I was released and taken back a few times but then I focused on boxing because I wanted a sport to show my flair in.
“I remember my first-ever session with the academy, basically my trial. I got the ball, went past three people, passed the ball, got it back and had a shot.
“They stopped the session and had a go at me for not passing straight away. They told me, ‘The simple thing is always best’ but I was thinking, ‘Well, why doesn’t Ronaldo do that, then?’.
“My flair was just built into me as a kid.

“I can box simple and hold my hands up but if I am not getting caught and I am winning fights then that’s how I will box.
People think I will change my style when I step up in class but I have a lot of layers and people are going to see them.”
When this fight was first announced for December 2018, Kelly was the red-hot favourite.
But two cancellations, following an illness for the Englishman and the pandemic, have let the 32-year-old Russian champion boost his record to 26-3-1 and sway bookies.
But Kelly, still a young pup with just ten professional wins and a draw to his name, is happy being the underdog.
He added: “This fight has been a long time coming and it’s finally time to silence my doubters.

“He is the favourite heading into the fight. He has proved how good he is in his last three fights.
“It’s going to be a good fight but one I’m quietly confident about.
“I feel like this is a turning point in my career.
“When I win, then I will take it to the next level.
“A lot in my future depends on this fight.”
