Chelsea’s flop £35m transfer Danny Drinkwater set to join Turkish side Kasimpasa on loan until end of season

CHELSEA midfielder Danny Drinkwater is close to completing a loan switch to Turkish club Kasimpasa until the end of the season.
Drinkwater, 30, has made just 23 appearances for the Blues since his £35million move from Leicester in 2017.

The £110,000-a-week man has not featured in the first team since the 2018 Community Shield against Manchester City and has been forced to train with the Under-23s.
After failing to impress on loan at Burnley and Aston Villa, he’s been seeking an overseas loan move since the summer.
He will head to Turkish capital Istanbul and put pen-to-paper with the club who sit 13th in the Super Lig.
He still has 18 months left on his deal at Chelsea with boss Frank Lampard eager to get him off the wage books.

Drinkwater is eager to reignite his career that has taken a dramatic fall from grace since his move to Stamford Bridge.
He has made just 23 appearances and hasn’t made a senior appearance since March 2018.
Drinkwater had loan spells with both Burnley and Aston Villa but made six appearances between them.
During his time with Villa, he was sent away from the club’s training ground after headbutting team-mate Jota.

His problems persisted off the field after being charged with drink-driving in April 2019 and was battered by six thugs outside a nightclub just months after.
Just last month he was sent off in an Under-23 game for kicking out at Tottenham youngster Alfie Devine.
In November, Drinkwater was pictured enjoying a Harry Potter themed night while his team were in Champions League action.

Phil Neville’s England replacement Sarina Wiegman will bring Dutch of class to Lionesses in trophy hunt

PHIL NEVILLE will soon be packing his flip-flops and factor 40 for the tough gig that is Miami.
While we are all freezing in our isolated world, Neville has left England’s women’s team and bagged himself a Florida foxhole.

Neville is off to manage Inter MiamiCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Lucky man! Not so much Miami Vice, as Miami, hmmmm, very nice. Good luck to him.
His record as boss was mixed.
A 2019 World Cup semi-final berth — only losing to eventual winners USA 2-1 — was countered by really poor form since then, with the Lionesses losing five of their last nine games.
    Enter a woman!

The replacement for 43- year-old Neville is former Holland boss Sarina Wiegman.
These are exciting times for women’s football and Wiegman comes with a cracking CV.
She won Euro 2017 with Holland and was runner-up at the 2019 World Cup.
I confess I was surprised when Neville was appointed as he hadn’t managed a team before.

Surely you need a certain level of experience before becoming the focal point for a nation’s hopes and fears.
Mind you, some of the best men’s managers in recent years barely kicked a ball in anger.
Arsene Wenger, Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez spring to mind and Jose Mourinho was a translator under the late Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona.
As for Wiegman, she ticks both boxes, with 104 caps for the Netherlands as a player.
The 51-year-old is renowned for her professionalism and high standards and takes over just before the 2022 Euros on our home soil.
We all know the galvanising effect Euro 96 had on the men’s game — Three Lions on the shirt and all that — and, hopefully, the same can happen with the women.
Wiegman, who is set to take over after this summer’s Olympics — assuming they go ahead — has all of our best wishes as the England team have been bridesmaids but never the brides.
Runners-up in Europe twice and World Cup semi-finalists twice, Neville and others before him could not find the key to the trophy cabinet. Now, where have we heard that before?

    OUT OF TOUCH
I HAVE to admit that I am bemused by this constant berating of footballers for celebrating goals by hugging.
As far as I am aware you cannot catch Covid from someone who has tested negative — no matter how close you get. And all the players on the pitch have tested negative.
Premier League players are now tested three times a week, making them, I would think, among the most tested people in the country.
Scoring a goal is one of the great pleasures of being a footballer and a fist pump or elbow bump doesn’t really have the same effect as a pure instinct goal celebration.
But, of course, we will all comply with the rules. No matter how little they make sense sometimes.

    EFL DEBT OF GRATITUDE
WEST HAM received a letter from the chairman of Northampton Town last week, writing to thank us and all Premier League clubs for their assistance with the EFL bailout.
He recognised that all of football is struggling through this pandemic and suffering significant losses, so the bailout was ‘much appreciated’.
    He’s not wrong.
Three Premier League clubs recently posted significant losses — Man Utd £23million, Spurs £67.7m and Southampton £76m, no doubt with more to follow. The Prem collectively is losing £100- a-month.
He said that ‘Northampton Town wanted to just recognise the role of the Premier League clubs in helping’.
A thank you goes a long way, so a touch of class from Kelvin Thomas.

Man Utd forwards Rashford and Fernandes can exploit Liverpool’s problems at centre-half without crocked Van Dijk

MANCHESTER UNITED will travel to Anfield knowing they can exploit areas in this Liverpool side that are normally watertight.
And that will be music to the ears of United’s attacking threats, in particular Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes will look to supply Rashford at every opportunityCredit: Rex Features

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
It begins with Liverpool’s centre-half problems. The absence of Virgil van Dijk is huge not just defensively but for his pace to recover ground consistently and effectively.
In previous games Jurgen Klopp has opted for experience with players who are unfamiliar to the role, such as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
This is hardly ideal and, as a defender, if you know you are up against players with great pace like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, you will drop deeper.

But Klopp’s teams are front-foot orientated, so the midfield will continue to press high up the pitch, as well as the two full-backs, leaving the centre-backs exposed.

At times in their 1-0 loss away to Southampton, they had just two men behind the ball who were uncomfortable having to cover so much ground around them.
This is not to say Liverpool have been ‘bad’ defensively this year. Only five teams have conceded less in the division so far.
And in the 12 Prem games since the 2-2 draw with Everton in October, they have not conceded more than one goal in a game. But on the other hand, they have only had four clean sheets in the process.

FANCY A PUNT? TODAY’S BEST ODDS BOOSTS FROM THE UK’S LEADING BOOKIES

How Liverpool have fared with and without Van Dijk since his debut in 2018 up to his injury against Everton
And in the last six games where they have conceded just one, they have drawn four, lost one and won just one.
So, take away Liverpool’s ability to keep a clean sheet, and they are struggling. That’s very unlike the Reds.
As is the space left around their defenders. If the midfield push high to win the ball back and leave the centre-backs sat deep, that will leave a huge space for Fernandes to drift into.
Alternatively, if the front three press high and the midfield drop off to protect their defenders, a space for Paul Pogba — who played that role against Burnley — will open up.
So for United, it is all about the transition and where they focus their attacks when they get the ball back.

To Fernandes, to Pogba — or whoever plays that deeper role — or out wide to the likes of Rashford or Martial with Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold going forward.
With the right defence, Liverpool can play their pressing game and have that space covered by an intelligent and speedy centre-back. But right now, he is missing.
Their saving grace has been their home form — one thing United should not take for granted.
Liverpool have five more points than anyone else at home this campaign, scoring the most goals. Played eight, won seven and drawn one.

A lot of teams have gone to Anfield and tried to play exactly how United will likely play and failed.
United may be joint-top of the away-form table, and the onus may be on Liverpool, but the Red Devils cannot afford to take their opponents lightly and drop too deep, encouraging Klopp’s men to attack.
Ultimately, this game will be about which team is best set up for when they lose the ball
Which means for Klopp he has some big decisions to make on his understrength backline.

Tosin Adarabioyo leaves ego at the door as he focusses on helping the Cottagers climb the Premier League table

TOSIN ADARABIOYO will never allow the rave reviews he is receiving at Fulham get to his head.
That is because the defender has a motto – Ego Is The Enemy.

Tosin Adarabioyo has fast established himself as a Fulham fans’ favourite

Fulham ace Tosin was a £2million bargain buy from Manchester City

Tosin, 23, has been a revelation since Scott Parker snapped him up from Manchester City in October and will be one of the first names on the team sheet when they host Chelsea on Saturday.
The £2million Fulham paid Manchester City in October is turning out to be the bargain of the season.
Here are some superlatives used by fans to describe his form on social media: “Class”, “Fantastic”, “Faultless”, “A beast”, “Commanding” and, maybe slightly over-enthusiastically “World’s best defender!”
But his calm and mature performances have helped the Cottagers put together a run of just one defeat in their last seven Premier League games.

So what does Tosin make of all the plaudits?
He said: “I’ve just finished reading a good book called Ego Is The Enemy. It’s all about the evils of having a big ego.
“You must never think you’re bigger than you are.
“If you have players who think everything is about them and not put the team first, in football it’ll quickly be to the side’s downfall.

“This can especially happen at clubs that have previously been successful. People can start to grow egos and then struggle to replicate their achievements.
“You can’t rest on your laurels. You must keep humble and working hard to not just maintain but improve your level.”
His performance in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Wednesday was exceptional.
His superb goal-saving tackle to deny Harry Kane was particularly impressive.

Harry Kane was stopped in his tracks by a top-class Tosin tackle Credit: REUTERS
It was certainly one he was proud of as he posted an image of his outstretched right boot taking the ball off the England striker on his Twitter page within an hour of the game.
And he wittily wrote “(Copy and paste) Another point” – in reference to Fulham’s fifth consecutive Premier League draw.
Asked how much practice he puts into timing such tackles to perfection and remains so calm under pressure, Adarabioyo is typically modest.
He told me: “It’s just instinct and experience. Other than practicing sliding tackles, it’s not something I prepare.
“It’s my style of play. That’s how I enjoy playing football.
“I would say the calmness is more my style of life.
“I’m mature naturally. It’s hard to describe but I’d say I’m very relaxed and don’t get stressed by anything.
“But I prefer talking about the team. People are starting to look at Fulham as a side that can beat anyone.
“We’re starting to get the respect we deserve.”

Tosin has excelled in a back three that gave Fulham a mean streakCredit: EPA/STU FORSTER
He is not wrong there. The West Londoners lost seven of their opening nine Premier League matches – but since Scott Parker switched to a back three of Tosin, Joachim Andersen and Ola Aina they have been rock solid.
In their five straight draws – a run that included points against Liverpool, Spurs and Southampton – they have kept two clean sheets and only conceded three goals.
And Tosin said: “Since we went to a back three, everyone seems to know what they’re doing and we’ve got players in the right positions to show their strengths.”
But he knows Fulham must start turning draws into wins.Bobby Reid is their top scorer with four while Ademola Lookman, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Cavaleiro only have two apiece.

And Tosin said: “To beat Leicester, draw against Liverpool and Tottenham, shows how good a side we are.
“We all know we can beat any team but must be more clinical up top – and I don’t just mean strikers. All of us need to chip in more.”
And the Fulham ace is critical of his own lack of goals – even though he is a defender.
Tosin scored three goals in 33 Championship starts on loan at Blackburn last season – and is yet to net in his 12 Premier League starts this term.
He said: “I need to improve my offensive heading and get more goals from set-pieces.

We all know we can beat any team but must be more clinical up top – and I don’t just mean strikers. All of us need to chip in more.”

“My goal stats were average growing up through the youth ranks at Manchester City.
“But I do find myself getting on the end of a few free-kicks and corners and just haven’t been able to direct them on target.
“It’s something I know I need to work on in training.”
Tosin loves working under Parker, who he says is both “demanding” and “motivational”.
And he added: “He demands the best and is a joy to play for.
“The manager is ambitious. He knows he has a squad of good players and keeps telling us to believe we’re a good side.

Boss Scott Parker has been a joy to play under says Fulham ace Tosin
“When I go into matches, it’s clear what he requires from me. His preparation and information he passes on is very detailed and that’s a great credit to Scott.”
Tosin had been with City since he was six and captained the under-18s when he was just 14 – but says the decision to leave the club was easy.
Although Pep Guardiola had spoken highly of the defender in the past, he failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the club.
He made two Champions League starts, two in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup.
The Fulham ace explained: “I knew it was time to move on if I wanted to play Premier League football.
“It was enjoyable playing pretty much every game last season at Blackburn and Fulham gave me an opportunity to hopefully continue doing that.”

Tosin celebrates with Claudio Bravo and Bernardo Silva after Manchester City beat Leicester in the 2017 Carabao Cup quarter-finalCredit: REUTERS
If he continues in the way he has started at Fulham, it will surely only be a matter of time before England boss Gareth Southgate takes a serious look at him.
Tosin played for all the England age groups up to under-19s.But he would only say: “I just want to fulfil what I’m capable of – and that’s to be a top player.”
Fulham aim to win their first Premier League London derby since 2008 when they face Chelsea.
They ended a run of 13 straight losses against a capital rival in the top flight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

I want to fulfil what I’m capable of – and that’s to be a top player.”

Tosin said: “We set out our stall to win at Tottenham but, on reflection, it was a good point when you consider we only knew we were playing them on Monday.
“I didn’t know about that London derby record but it’s something we can build on by beating Chelsea.”
TV pundit Jamie Carragher may well be eating his words at the end of season.
He said earlier in the campaign he was “more certain of anything in his life” that Fulham would be relegated?
The Fulham ace said: “Well, I have full belief we’ll have a successful season so let’s see who is proven right.”
My money is on Tosin. More

Liverpool vs Man Utd is sink or swim for referees… but Paul Tierney is up to the task in biggest test of his career

PAUL TIERNEY faces the biggest game of his refereeing career at Anfield.
Liverpool against Manchester United remains the greatest rivalry in the Premier League and Sunday is the ultimate test for an official.

Paul Tierney will be in charge of Manchester United vs LiverpoolCredit: Andy Hooper-The Daily Mail

The eyes of the world will be on Tierney and this is his chance to prove he can join the elite group of referees.
This is what we referees call an ‘A game’ and the PGMOL management clearly trust him.
In a powder-keg game like this you either sink or swim and it’s up to Tierney to show he can deliver a top level performance.
In recent weeks there has been a lot of talk regarding the number of spot-kicks United have received.

Jurgen Klopp has tried to play mind games on that issue but I don’t think that tactic will work with Tierney because he’s strong in his decision-making.
I like Tierney’s style. He’s mentally tough, not easily influenced and isn’t quick to flash a cheap yellow card – that is vital in a game of this magnitude.
An added incentive for Tierney, 40, is Uefa’s referee chiefs will be watching because this is one of the biggest games in club football.
And Tierney, currently in the third category of European refs, can put himself in the shop window, move up the list and enhance his future opportunities of officiating in the Champions League with an impressive display.

BETTING OFFER: CLAIM RISK FREE £20 BET WITH PADDY POWER
There is no doubt Tierney will be nervous and he will feel the tension once the team sheets are handed in an hour before kick-off.
But I believe there will be less pressure on the Wigan whistler because he will not have to contend with a partisan Anfield crowd who usually challenge every decision you make.
We have already seen in the Merseyside and Manchester derbies this season that there is a lack of intensity due to no fans inside the stadiums.
There is no atmosphere for the players to feed off and that affects the tempo of the game.
It’s important the referee manages the players. I refereed this fixture three times and I remember in the game at Anfield in September 2012 Jonjo Shelvey and Patrice Evra both committed fouls early on.
Steven Gerrard ran over to me to apply pressure on issuing a caution for the Manchester United left-back but I waved him away and awarded a free-kick rather than reach for an early yellow card.

Jurgen Klopp has attempted mind-games before the Anfield clashCredit: Tom Jenkins/ The Guardian
You have to be mentally strong and stamp your authority on the game – and that doesn’t necessarily mean with a card – otherwise you can lose control and it will be a long afternoon.
It’s important to get your first decision right to gain the trust and respect from the players and that will give you confidence for the rest of the game.
In that showdown in 2012, I sent off Shelvey for a wild lunge on Jonny Evans and I still maintain to this day it was a red card. Some will argue I should have cautioned both of them but I felt he endangered Evans’ safety.
I also awarded United a late penalty for Glen Johnson’s clear foul on Antonio Valencia. I’m sure VAR would have spent a long time viewing those incidents today!

Because of the two decisions I received a lot of horrific abuse from a minority of Liverpool fans on social media afterwards.
The vile attacks weren’t just aimed at me, they also targeted my wife and daughter with references to my family’s battles with cancer and that crossed the line. I had to call in the police.
Liverpool sent me a letter to apologise and condemn the actions of their supporters and that brought closure on the matter.

Man City’s Benjamin Mendy flouted lockdown AGAIN by flying girl in from Greece for four-day romp

COVIDIOT football star Benjamin Mendy flouted rules again when he flew a girl in from Greece for a four-day romp.
We told last week how the Man City ace, 26, hosted a new year party for pals outside his bubble.

Benjamin Mendy flew out Claudia Marino from Athens to his home for a four-day romp

Claudia should have been self-isolating on arrival but instead stayed at Mendy’s house

But it was not his first breach — last summer he wooed Claudia Marino online then flew her from Athens to his £5million Cheshire home from June 29.
The Government had ordered UK arrivals from June 6 to self-isolate for 14 days or face a fine.
When Claudia, 22, sent him a screenshot of the strict measures alongside a sad emoji, Mendy replied: “U stay in my house.
“It’s ok they don’t gonna check.”

Claudia admitted she’d been up for fun and said they romped.
She added: “I’m not naive and I know what footballers are like but I thought it would be an experience.
“He was single so I wasn’t hurting anybody.
“We had some drinks and had a laugh. One day he took me to Leeds where he saw his dentist.”

Claudia flew back to Greece on July 2
Claudia flew back on July 2 and got a message from Mendy telling her to delete an Instagram video showing her inside his house.
Mendy has apologised for his new year do.
Guardiola still decided to name Mendy as a substitute for last Sunday’s Premier League win at Chelsea and then launched a passionate defence, saying: “Benjamin already had Covid in the past, he has been tested every day like all the other players.
“He has explained, he knows what he has done and he will learn in the future. He is part of the group, he is one of the guys who is much beloved in our group.

The 22-year-old said Mendy even took her to Leeds during her visit

“In the stands today he was the most active player. He is a special guy for us and has an incredible heart. I would like to see how many people will now judge him and see if they have the good intentions that he has.
“But he has to understand some things. I would like to know how many people did this on New Year’s Eve, but normally in this society we judge others when first we should judge ourselves.
“I’m not justifying it, he broke the rules. But don’t give too many lessons to others.”

Pep Guardiola defends Benjamin Mendy over coronavirus breach insisting many people have maybe done the same

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer credits ‘more vocal’ Man Utd dressing room for charge to top of Premier League table

THE noise coming out of the Manchester United dressing room is getting louder and louder.
And that is music to the ears of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Man Utd have been ‘more vocal’ and it’s benefited them, claims SolskjaerCredit: Getty Images – Getty

His Red Devils will go top of the table for the first time in nearly three-and-a-half years if they avoid defeat at Burnley on Tuesday.
And it would quieten down all those who have questioned the character of this United squad, such as former skipper Roy Keane — for the time being at least.
Norwegian Solskjaer — who won six Premier League titles during his glittering 11-year playing career at Old Trafford — firmly believes this group is made of the right stuff.
It is seven-and-a-half years since United were last champions but Solskjaer senses they have the fibre to at least stay in the hunt this time around.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
He said: “We are very focused. We have some good characters in the team, the dressing room is louder, it’s more vocal.
“Of course, we have experience. We’ve got Nemanja Matic, who has won it a few times, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani.
“Bruno Fernandes has come in and I think he wants to feel part of a team that is going to be challenging for trophies.

“We have more players that can grab the situation.

“I feel that the group’s mentality is getting better, so of course that is the big thing for me — that we go into games in the right frame of mind.
“Sometimes results don’t go as expected but I am very happy with where we are mentally at the moment.”
Despite the incentive on offer at Turf Moor tonight, Solskjaer was quick to warn his players not to believe they have got the Premier League sussed.
He said: “If at one point you think, ‘Ah, we’ve made it now, we’ve cracked it’ and you relax, that is when it’s going to hit you back.
“I like to think we go into this game not thinking about where we end up in the table that night but where we can end up in May. That’s what matters.”
Solskjaer played in a United team that was generally packed full of characters and winners — but their togetherness was also vital.
And the way Solskjaer’s men have picked themselves up after various setbacks this season is a promising sign in the eyes of the United boss.

Man Utd enjoyed their training session on Monday with the top spot in the Premier League up for grabsCredit: Getty Images – Getty
He said: “There is nothing worse than having your manager or coaches always telling you what to do — this, that and the other.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have played in a team with loads of characters, that we look after ourselves and do yourself justice.
“You don’t just let yourself down, you can let your team down — so you need leaders there to really grab hold of the ones who stray out of line and from what we have agreed as a group.
“When you’re part of a football team, there’s nothing stronger than being part of a team that keeps together. I’ve also seen teams that have cliques, that don’t work together — that’s the killer of a team.
“So it’s a big, big thing that the group push themselves.
“I’ve been lucky enough at Molde and here now to have a feeling that I can trust them more and more to look after themselves.”
When Solskjaer was a player, United fans grew used to seeing their team at the top of the table.
They have almost forgotten the feeling now, so it would be a welcome sight for them to be looking down on old rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, Solskjaer said: “The league table doesn’t matter now — but you’ve got to pick up points.
“When you get to March and April, that’s where the league will be decided.
“It’s important for us now to establish ourselves up among the top four. We’ve only finished top four three times since Alex Ferguson left.
“If we can do that again — and improve on third — that’s progress.”
Cavani is one of the players viewed as a leader by Solskjaer, who believes the striker can still have a big say in the season.
The Uruguayan, 33, is available again after serving a three-match ban for using racist language on social media.
The former Paris Saint-Germain ace has started only five matches in what has been a frustrating start to his United career.
But his manager believes the way he behaves on and off the pitch will be an example to younger players in the squad.
Solskjaer said: “You can see he is a player who has looked after himself his whole career and found out what works for him.
“He knows he is here to improve and to get ready for the game, so I really like those things you see in players who have had careers like that.”
Meanwhile, United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, 23, is close to joining German outfit Bayer Leverkusen in a £1.5million deal.
