Diego Maradona’s carer ‘crushed sleeping pills into his beer to stop him bothering them’

A CARER for Diego Maradona crushed sleeping pills into his beer to stop him bothering them at night, investigators heard.
Psychologist Griselda Morel, who worked with the star’s eight-year-old son Dieguito, told prosecutors: “If he got up at 9am and asked for beer he was given it.

“A custodian crushed tablets he was taking and put in his beer so he didn’t cause a fuss.”
She claimed Maradona was seen talking on the phone in his room without a mobile in his hand.
She added in a leaked statement: “The last time I saw him they bathed him with a hose.

Chris Eubank and Michael Watson in emotional reunion on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories 30 years after traumatic fight

CHRIS EUBANK still has Michael Watson in his corner 30 years on from the heartbreaking fight that almost killed him.
In September 1991 Watson walked into a rematch with Eubank, just three months after they shared a thrilling 12-round battle Eubank controversially snatched on points. Sadly he would be carried out.

Already ahead on all three cards, Watson was on course to land his first world title when he dropped Eubank, for the first time in his career, with just 18 seconds of the 11th remaining.
But Eubank somehow bounced up off the canvas and instantly landed an uppercut and left hook that felled a stunned Watson and tragically bounced the back of his head against the second-to-bottom rope.
Watson never recovered from that terrible treble impact and was stopped, under siege but on his feet, almost as soon as the 12th started, before collapsing in the White Hart Lane ring.
A 40-day coma and six operations ensued to beat the blood clot that had formed on his brain, leaving him blinded, in a wheelchair and unable to talk.

Eventually Watson mounted an incredible recovery, regained most of his faculties against vicious odds and raised millions for charity.
But perhaps most incredibly he held no malice toward the two-time rival who had so tragically and accidentally disabled him.
On tonight’s episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, with Eubank struggling to deal with recalling the events of that night, a voice from the crowd calls out.
“Let’s move on Chris, it’s all right, it’s OK bruv,” Michael Watson, 55, yells.

It was the fight that put Michael Watson on a life support systemCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“Let’s move on in life. Peace and love. I love you Chris. It’s all in the past, let’s move on in life.
“We’re here together. Let’s live and love. I love you Chris. Let’s move on.
“We are born warriors, we are real. God bless you Chris.”
The inquest into the medical failings that evening reshaped British boxing and thousands of lives have since been saved in sold-out world title fights and in empty small halls.
Eubank, a much-derided pantomime showman with the heart and chin of a celebrated gladiator, lost his cutting edge from that fight on.
But he describes the oath heroes like himself, Watson, Benn, Gerald McClellan take before they risk suffering and causing life-changing injuries.
“As soon as you start fighting you’ve got the world looking at you because the first instinct of a man is to protect, that is to fight,” the 54-year-old said.
“Now, can you be a gentleman while you’re doing it? Can you do it truly? Can you go beyond?

Michael Watson almost lost his life following his fight with Chris Eubank in 1991Credit: Dan Charity – The Sun

“If you can’t win a fight, do you quit because you can’t win or do you go on taking that beating?
“And, if you can go on taking that beating, you’re doing it for the public, you are lifting their spirits. And there’s no better vocation than lifting the spirits of others.
“Whatever your predicament, whatever situation you’re in, you can rise. And that’s what we do.”
Eubank reveals his iconic career and two-weight world title reigns only happened so he could grab the attention of the three brothers who spurned him growing up.
Morgan asks him what his siblings said to him in 1990 after he had beaten fellow Brit boxing legend Nigel Benn to become middleweight champion for the first time.
And the 54-year-old lisped, with impeccable timing: “You’re still a toss pot.”

Dele Alli says Mauricio Pochettino had a ‘dad vibe’ as Spurs star admits he was lucky to play under old boss

DELE ALLI  admitted he was lucky to have played under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham.
The midfielder has hardly had a look-in from Jose Mourinho.

Dele Alli spoke of his admiration for old boss Mauricio PochettinoCredit: –

Ahead of Spurs’ Europa League tie at Wolfsberger tonight, Dele said: “I was very lucky to have a manager like Pochettino — he was an unbelievable guy and very experienced.
“He would  pull me in if I was doing dumb stuff and speak with me.
“Not like a dad — but that sort of vibe.”
Boss Mourinho admits the pair held clear-the-air talks after Dele’s loan switch to Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise.

Dele has been frozen out since the Special One replaced the Argentine in November 2019.
Mourinho branded his star “f***ing lazy” in Amazon Prime’s behind-the-scenes series.
Dele told Fifa’s PlayOn podcast: “So someone is coming into our homes, recording everything, and we don’t have any say.

He added: “I’m looking to sort this situation out and get back to playing as much as I can.”

Carabao Cup to be sacrificed with Prem’s top clubs to skip competition under new Champions League expansion plans

THE LEAGUE Cup will have to be sacrificed if the Prem wins a battle to change the Champions League revamp.
Top-flight clubs agreed at their latest “shareholder” meeting on three points of contention with the latest Uefa-led plans for a 36-team competition from 2024.

League chiefs will now go to Uefa seeking changes to the expansion to 225 games from 125 matches in the current competition, the access list limiting English football to five places and plans to extend the opening phase into the January each season.
Premier League chiefs, instead, will argue that all the initial games – Uefa want 10 matches in the opening “Swiss model” single table phase – should be completed before Christmas, leaving January free for domestic action.
But that will only be possible if teams in European action duck out of the League Cup, with the 20 clubs agreeing the future of the competition would have to be thrashed out and discussed as part of the new-look calendar.
The agreement at least avoided any of the anticipated contention between the clubs, although issues have not gone away with a number of the smaller teams unhappy at the involvement of the Big Six.

All of the Big Six are members of the influential European Club Association, whose chief executive, Charlie Marshall, gave his backing for the Uefa scheme.
Speaking at the FT Business of Football Summit, he said: “More European matches are important in the development of football.
“These plans are bang in the centre of where we are coming from and we don’t see causes for alarm, which seems to be hysteria and reactionism.”
And the Uefa plans were given a further boost by Simon Green, head of current Champions League and Europa League broadcaster BT Sport, who savaged the competing proposals for a new closed shop European Super League.

Green said: “Of course a European Super League would be extremely appealing to broadcasters but it would not be worth as much as the existing leagues and Champions League are at the moment.
“It would be undoing the value that already exists and reinventing something that is worth less, while undoing the strengths of the leagues.
Overall, maintaining what exists now is the best strategy football should adopt, rather than reinventing something which theoretically will do better – because it won’t.”
Meanwhile, club chiefs agreed to continue to broadcast all Prem games live until fans can return to grounds in significant numbers, not thought likely before next season.

Marcus Rashford vows NEVER to give up fight for British kids as Man Utd star admits campaigning has made him a ‘target’

MARCUS RASHFORD pledged to never give up his fight for Britain’s kids – but accepted he had become a “target” for being outspoken.
The Manchester United and England striker has been transformed into a social reformer and substantial political figure after forcing at least two Government policy U-turns on feeding youngsters.

Rashford’s public stance saw him criticised widely before PM Boris Johnson made his hasty policy changes.
But Rashford insisted he is just at the beginning of a lifelong campaign to improve the lives of the country’s poorest families.
Rashford said: “I understood I was a target already.
“Being a footballer for one of the biggest clubs in the world is going to bring attention. I knew what I was stepping into.

“There were people who had opinions before they’d ever met or spoke with me. I’ve come to terms with that. It’s part of my life.
“The effect it will have on me, the campaign is much bigger than that.

“I’m willing to take the little bit of aggravation from wherever it comes from.”
Speaking to the FT Business of Football Summit, he added: “We’ve taken a lot of steps in the fight direction.

“I’ve raised awareness for this topic, so I’m pleased we have made some progress but I’m still hungry and wanting to do more.
“Before this campaign I hadn’t been one to speak up about my upbringing. I just got on with my job of playing football.
“The time came for me to speak out. We found ways to help and people and businesses who joined us were much more powerful than I was.
“I was dead proud of everyone for being so kind hearted and willing to do so. It’s been an amazing journey.

We wouldn’t have to say this if it had started 15 or 20 years ago and I hope you will see the benefits in 10 or 15 years from now.
    Marcus Rashford

“But it’s a long process. I’m not asking for it all to be done at once because that’s not possible and I know it will cost a lot of money.
“We wouldn’t have to say this if it had started 15 or 20 years ago and I hope you will see the benefits in 10 or 15 years from now.
“It will not stop me pushing forward with something these families need.”

Pele reveals he had so many affairs he didn’t know how many kids he had

HE is the footballing legend who scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup matches — and had so many affairs that he must have lost count.
Now, at the age of 80, Pele lays bare how he took advantage of women throwing themselves at his feet during the height of his sporting fame.

Now 80, Pele reveals all in a new Netflix documentaryCredit: Netflix

And the Brazilian hero, who has been married three times, admits he has fathered so many children that he had been unaware that some of them even existed.
He says: “In all honesty I’ve had a few affairs, some of which resulted in children, but I’ve only learned about them later.”
Pele has seven known offspring, including Sandra Machado — who he refused to acknowledge even after the courts ruled in 1996 that she was his daughter.
Five of his children — Kelly, 54, Edinho, 50, Jennifer, 42, and twins Joshua and Celeste, 24 — came from his first two marriages to Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi and Assiria Lemos Seixas.

Sandra, who died from cancer in 2006, was the result of an illicit romance with housemaid Anisia Machado. An affair in 1968 with journalist Lenita Kurtz produced daughter Flavia, 52.
But in a new documentary out next week, Pele claims that he told his wives and girlfriends that he was unfaithful.

He says: “My first wife, first girlfriend, knew about it. I never lied.”
While that may be true, playing the field was a one-way street for Pele.

Maria da Graca Xuxa — a 57-year-old former model who started seeing Pele when she was just 17 — revealed last month: “He said it was an open relationship, but open only to him.”
In the Netflix film, simply entitled Pele, the South American shows a lack of ego normally associated with preening footballers.
Shuffling carefully with his Zimmer frame, it is hard to believe elderly Pele was once the soccer superman who left countless defenders flat on their faces with his deft turns of speed.
He has been dogged by health problems including a hip operation, infection and prostate condition.
‘We came from nothing, we didn’t have much’
With his infectious grin, sublime skills and unmatched goal-scoring record, Pele has long been regarded as the best advert for the beautiful game.
While his rival for the title of the greatest player of all time, the recently deceased Diego Maradona, was constantly dogged by scandal, the Brazilian has been venerated.
A United Nations goodwill ambassador, he scored a remarkable 1,283 goals in 1,363 games, and is the only man ever to win three World Cups.
Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, his parents were poor even though his father Dondinho played football for one of the top teams in the south eastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
As a young boy, Pele would play with a ball made from a sock stuffed with paper and earned money by shining shoes before turning professional.
He says: “We came from nothing — we didn’t have much. We were poor but my father always worked.”

It didn’t take long before his goalscoring talents were noticed.
When his youth team coach Waldemar de Brito took Pele to Sao Paolo side Santos, he told them the 15-year-old unknown would become the “greatest player in the world.”
Less than a year after making his league debut, Pele was called up for the national side and earned his first cap aged 16.
The following summer, in 1958, he played a major role in Brazil’s first World Cup victory.
Back then, some locals at the tournament in Sweden had never seen or met someone black.
Pele recalls: “This Swedish girl kept rubbing my skin to see if it would come off.”

In the final, the striker scored two amazing goals, including one where he flicked the ball into the air before volleying it, as his side defeated the hosts 5-2.
After that, everyone in the world had heard of Pele, with people calling him the king of Brazil.
He says: “I couldn’t go outside. Everywhere I went, people came up to me.”Pele had women flocking to his door from a young age.
The constant attention of young women, who would cuddle up to the hero to have their photos taken, was tough on his first wife, who he wed in February 1966 when he was 25.
Pele had known Rosemeri for many years and he believes he was not ready to tie the knot with her. He explains: “I married her because I met her when I was too young. I liked her a lot. But that passion when you are madly in love — we didn’t have any of that.”
Their son Edinho developed a serious drug problem when he grew up and got involved with the trade of illegal substances.

Pele now lives in a mansion near Sao Paulo with his third wife MarciaCredit: Reuters
In 2017, the former goalkeeper was jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering.
Pele’s first marriage ended in 1982 after he was romantically linked to Brazilian model Xuxa, who later dated Formula 1 star Ayrton Senna.
It took him another 12 years to walk down the aisle again, this time with gospel singer Assiria, but that ended in divorce in 2008.
With all that personal turmoil it is perhaps surprising that Pele describes “getting knocked out of the World Cup in England” in 1966 as “the saddest moment in my life”.
Having won two World Cups in a row, Brazil arrived as the favourites to lift the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley Stadium.
But they could not cope with a much more physical approach to the game, which saw defenders hacking down Pele in full flow.
‘At that moment, I didn’t want to be Pele’
After they were knocked out in the group stage, he announced, at the age of just 26: “I don’t intend to play in the World Cup again.”
It needed a firm word from Brazil’s military junta to persuade their star player to change his mind four years later.
Some critics claim that the conservative Pele was too cosy with the country’s brutal dictator Emilio Medici.
The player, who met and shook hands with Medici, admits “my doors were always open” to the government and that he knew about the state-backed tortures.
But he knew that speaking out against the regime could result in a person being “disappeared.”
Having agreed to return to the pitch, the still brilliant player was now gripped by terrible self-doubt and asked his manager not to select him for the starting 11 in Mexico 1970.

Pele has been dubbed the ‘greatest player in the world’Credit: PA:Empics Sport
He recalls: “At that moment, I didn’t want to be Pele. I didn’t like it. I prayed this was my last World Cup.” Even half a century on from that tournament, he weeps in the documentary as he recalls seeing the Brazil fans lining up in the streets to celebrate their success in the group stage.
Anyone who questions what the game means to Pele only needs to watch this film. Through tears, he says: “I needed this World Cup.”
He got it through sheer strength of will, scoring a header plus two selfless assists in his side’s 4-1 victory over Italy in the final.
Even though the star made a fortune through advertising deals — including famously, promoting Viagra — money was not his number one motivation.
Turning down moves to top European sides, he stuck with his first team Santos throughout the majority of his career before joining New York Cosmos at the end. More then ten million people watched his debut on US TV in 1975.
Pele now lives in a beachfront mansion near Sao Paulo with his third wife Marcia, 48, who he married in the summer of 2016, but is not seen publicly very often due to his health problems. Thanks to his artistry on the pitch, he will always be cherished by the fans.
And the lack of vanity from the true king of football will continue to endear him to anyone with just a passing interest in the sport.

Glory, Pele concludes, was not what the game gave him.
He says: “The greatest gift from victory isn’t the trophy, it’s the relief.”
Pele streams on Netflix from Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho refusing to give up on Tottenham’s top four hopes until it’s ‘not possible’ amid growing pressure

JOSE MOURINHO has issued a rallying cry claiming he’s not prepared to give up on Tottenham’s top four hopes.
The Portuguese boss is under mounting pressure after seeing his side drop to ninth in the Premier League.

Spurs have won just one out of their last five league matches and were also knocked out of the FA Cup in the fifth round to Everton.
With his side six points adrift of fourth, Mourinho is remaining defiant that he can lead a charge into a Champions League spot without relying on qualification through the Europa League.
Ahead of their Thursday’s clash against Austrians’ Wolfsberger, he said: “It’s difficult in any case but it’s possible in both cases.
“The fourth position in the Premier League is of course very difficult but it is not mathematically impossible.

“Last season we were in a very, very bad position to try to get into the Europa League spots and in the end we made it in the last minute of the last game but we made it.
“Our motivation last season was while mathematically it’s possible we have to go for it.
“I remember we were coming from a 3-1 defeat against Sheffield and even with that result that looked crucial in that moment of the season mathematically it was still possible and we chased it until the last game, which is the same thing we’re going to do now.
“In the Europa League there are an incredible number of matches and we are in the tenth and not even in the last 16. It’s still the last 32, so it’s a long, long competition with very good teams, very good teams.

“You just look to the English teams in it and you see how strong the competition can be, but it’s open. We’re one of the 32 teams that has a chance to win it and we’re going to try.”
Mourinho has also backed keeper Hugo Lloris, insisting: He is still my No1.
The Spurs skipper and stopper has been slammed for making costly mistakes in recent weeks.
It has even been claimed the North Londoners will look to sell the France captain in the summer.
But Mourinho is standing by his star and said: “Well, when a player is a top player, it’s not because of one mistake or two or three that means he’s not a top player again. That’s the most important thing.
“I shouldn’t speak about it because he’s not my goalkeeper, but I don’t think he will take it in the wrong way. For me Alisson is one of the top five best goalkeepers in the world and in the last couple of matches, not yesterday, but in the matches before he’s made big mistakes. But he is one of the top five goalkeepers in the world.
“Hugo is the same, he is an amazing, amazing goalkeeper that is performing super consistently.
“Since he recovered from his elbow fracture, since my time here, he is playing so, so well. If he had responsibility in one or another goal we conceded recently, he’s still the same goalkeeper.

“He’s my No.1 choice and he has all my trust and my confidence.”
Joe Hart has started seven of Tottenham’s 10 Europa League ties this season, but looks likely to be on the bench again tomorrow.
Mourinho added: “In Joe Hart’s case, I’m also happy. He played already, if I’m not wrong, nine matches this season which is more, If i’m not wrong, than what he played in the previous two seasons.
“So in half of the season here I believed he played more matches than in the previous two seasons. Which is very, very good. He’s also a goalkeeper I totally trust, too.”
Left-back Sergio Reguilon is not fit enough to return from his muscle injury and will not travel.

Mikel Arteta warns Arsenal stars he will crack down on coronavirus breaches after Aubameyang’s lockdown tattoo

MIKEL ARTETA has warned that he is ready to crack down on any Arsenal player who breaks the club’s strict Covid protocols.
Arteta refused to confirm if captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been punished for getting a new tattoo during lockdown.

But the striker has been included in the squad for Thursday’s return to Europa League action against Benfica in Rome’s Olympic Stadium.
Arteta said: “We advise every player and make sure they know all the rules and stick to them all the time.
“If someone doesn’t do that he’s obviously going to get found out by us and there are going to be consequences.
“We have to act immediately but always privately as well. Whatever we do with our players we keep it internally.”

Arteta appeared to suggest that Spanish tattoo artist Alejandro Nicolas Bernal, who posted footage of him applying the needle to Aubameyang on social media, was a part of the player’s support bubble.
He said: “I cannot tell you who every player lives with but it’s true that a lot of the members of our squad have extended families at home.”
Now the onus is on Aubameyang to deliver another winning performance tonight following his hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-2 win against Leeds.
Arteta is still haunted by the memory of last season’s defeat by Olympiacos at the same stage of the Europa League and wants his players to use that disappointment against Benfica.

ONLINE CASINO OFFERS: CLAIM OVER £800 IN BONUS CASH

He said: “The way we got knocked out by Olympiacos was very cruel because the tie was in our hands and then we conceded in the last minute of extra-time.
“Even then Auba still had a massive chance to take us through and the lesson we learned that night was that we have to play every single minute of the competition with high focus.
“That defeat was really tough for us to take because we deserved to go through but it has created the hunger to do more this season and we have to use that to put more passion and commitment into this competition.
“Goal difference is very important at this stage of the competition and we have to keep that in the back of our minds at all times.

The Champions League has been massive for this club for many years but now we are not in it and the best way to get back there is by winning this competition.”
    Mikel Arteta

“We have to control our emotions to take the game into our territory when the tie is in our hands.
“We’ve been on a really strong run in the Europa League this season and now we have a good opportunity to take another step.
“The Champions League has been massive for this club for many years but now we are not in it and the best way to get back there is by winning this competition.”
Kieran Tierney has returned to the squad after missing Arsenal’s last six games with a knee injury but Thomas Partey is still recovering from a hamstring strain and has not travelled to Rome.
