Guardiola insists Bayern are still best team in Europe and NOT Man City despite 20 wins in row… but what do stats say?

PEP GUARDIOLA insists his former club Bayern Munich are the best in the business right now – not Manchester City.
The Etihad club are on a 20-match winning streak which has seen them take a firm grip on the Premier League title race.

That prompted West Ham boss David Moyes to hail City as the top side in Europe at the present time after the 2-1 win on Saturday.
But City boss Guardiola does not agree – pointing out that Bayern have won the World Club Cup and Champions League in the last year.
He said: “The best team in Europe and in the world are Bayern Munich because they won everything – they are the best,
“In England, the champions are Liverpool because they are the best. If you want to take the crown, you have to win.

“In March, nobody is champions.  We have to do well and try to win but we cannot deny the last few months were exceptional in terms of results.”
City can equal a club record for 28 matches unbeaten if they avoid defeat against Wolves at the Etihad on Tuesday.
They have won 20 of those matches on the spin – meaning they are closing in on the world record of 24, currently held by Brazilian side Coritiba.
But Guardiola said this is no time for them to be sitting back and reflecting on the milestones they have passed.

He said: “We don’t have time. There are many games, every three days a game so we have to rest and think another one.
“When you win you are happy but the day after you have to think the next one. This is what we have to do.
“It is nice but it is next game. When it happens you think ‘ok another game another record’ but we are here to try and win the title. The people demand it.”
City can move 15 points clear by beating Nuno Espirito Santo’s men as second placed Manchester United do not play until Wednesday.

Scores of Premier League players ‘risking lives and careers’ by getting hooked on sleeping pills

THE Premier League is becoming swamped with players hooked on sleeping pills, The Sun reveals today.
Scores of stars are mixing “sleepers” with alcohol to chase a new recreational high.

Insiders say the problem with pills such as Zopiclone and Zolpidem is growing at a terrifying rate with some risking their lives and careers.
The Sun recently told how one England star has been popping pack after pack of Zopiclone, downing them with champagne and vodka.
Today we can reveal two more Three Lions players have turned to the black market to get their hands on larger quantities of the Class C prescription medication.
One Wag returned home from a night out to find her partner out cold on the sofa and their hysterical kids trying to wake him.

A source close to the star said: “They’re destroying him — and those around him.’’
    PERFECT STORM
Astonishingly, the pills are not on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances.
There are now calls for players to be regularly screened by their clubs or for the pills to be outlawed.
Sporting Chance, the charity set up by former England and Arsenal hero Tony Adams, said it had been contacted by “many, many more players” seeking help.

The charity warned this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Pills such as Zopiclon are being prescribed by club doctorsCredit: Alamy
Chief executive Colin Bland said: “We have seen a notable increase in this behaviour during the pandemic.
“There is help there, from us, the Premier League and their clubs, but it’s been harder to get the message out because of lockdown. It’s created a perfect storm.”
It is well known that footballers struggle getting to sleep after midweek evening matches.
Their bodies are buzzing after 90 minutes and on a “come down” for hours after getting home. It was habitual for clubs to hand out the tablets to players — in small doses that a GP would recommend.
But like most prescription drugs, the more you take, the more you need to get the same effect.
And players say the routine distribution has started many on a rocky road to sleeping pill addiction.
Some are scouring the black market for their fix, and are sharing them in dressing rooms.
Premier League clubs are now reeling from the “monster” they created and are desperate to clampdown on the use.
One of the three England aces, who The Sun is not naming, was originally prescribed small doses of Zolpidem by a club doctor.
But he began mixing it with booze to get high and is now dependent.

Last week we revealed an England ace had become addicted to the powerful sleeping tablets

    Fears for three aces

PLAYER 1: One of his generation’s most talented stars but habit is the talk of dressing rooms.
He has openly downed the pills with champagne and vodka at parties. But his habit leaves him lacklustre in training the next day.
PLAYER 2: Pro with years of experience playing for England.
Prescribed Zolpidem by club. Started mixing pills with alcohol, now addicted. Wag begged him to get help after finding him “out cold”.
PLAYER 3: Young star tipped to be England regular. Suffered a form dip many have linked to his prolific use of sleepers. Concerns he may never fulfil potential.

A source said: “He has been taking them every single day for the last year. It has become part of his routine.
“He’d take them before bed but it soon progressed to whenever and wherever.
“They are destroying him and those around him. Taking sleeping tablets is rife among some of his teammates and at other clubs too.
“There’s an open conversation between players about who can get what and where from. It’s out of control. The pills need to be banned.
“What if a player was behind the wheel and killed someone you love?
“They don’t consider the repercussions. They think they’re invincible.”
The source said the player has confided in club bosses who are offering their full support.
They added: “The club has recommended he seek therapy to address it. His partner is worried and wants him to get help urgently.”
One dressing room source said our original story on an unnamed England ace had sent shockwaves through the game.

They don’t consider the repercussions. They think they’re invincible.

The source added: “What The Sun has uncovered is being discussed at the very top.
“There has been panic about what might come out next. Everyone is aware of the player who has recently battled a Zopiclone addiction.
“He has been all over the place. It is common knowledge across the Premier League.

Heroes not immune to huge risks

    By Craig Dexter, Sporting Chance

THERE is a misconception that substances prescribed for life issues such as poor sleep are less of a threat to wellbeing than illegal ones purchased on a street corner.
Yet they can be just as dangerous and habit forming if misused or abused.
Doctors and psychiatrists are trained to assess a safe and appropriate dose.
Importantly, they will consider all the factors relevant to an individual patient.
Those in professional sport may, wrongly, believe the rules do not apply.
Excuses will include factors such as repetitive injury, wanting to play in pain and late kick-offs due to TV.
Sometimes, sports people tell us, it’s just because of a simple desire to change the way they are feeling.
Certain sports have normalised prescribed medication use.
Look deeper and you find more dangers.
Substances bought from illegal sources may not be as advertised.
Often the dose indicators are way off.
Dependent players risk prosecution or even blackmail.
The main reason people ask Sporting Chance for help is that they have started to find their own behaviour unacceptable.

“But he is by no means the only player struggling. They’ve been gobbling them down like sweets. This is a massive issue.”
Previously aces inhaled balloons containing nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas or hippy crack, to get their kicks.
It was widely used on the party scene because of the euphoria it can induce. But “sleepers” are now the go-to high.
Mr Bland added: “Some players will have a habit, where it has become routine.
“Others will have an addictive disorder and this is their chosen drug of choice.
“Some will know they have a problem and seek help. But others won’t or will insist that they don’t have a problem.
“Elite athletes, footballers, are mixing large doses with alcohol for that very reason and it’s becoming a growing problem.
“They won’t be prescribed them in the quantity they are using, so they often turn to the black market.
“Let’s be clear, using prescribed medication beyond its prescribed dose is drug abuse.
“Using prescribed medication bought on the black market and not prescribed to you is also drug abuse and may be illegal.
“If that wasn’t enough, the boxes of tablets warn against using with alcohol so to mix the two is, again, drug abuse.
“There’s no way of getting away from it. It’s a murky world that they are occupying.”

The British Medical Journal has published experts’ letters warning against the misuse of sleeping pills and their ready availability online.
A recent survey of Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) members showed nine per cent were experiencing difficulties with damaging addictive habits.
The Football Association provides players with general information on what substances they put into their systems, plus educational material on the relevant matters.

“Anything else I can put up with — lack of food, the trials, but what I’m really scared of is the snakes.
“I think I will either be out in 24 hours or win it — there won’t be any half measures.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel tried to sign ‘unbelievable’ Man Utd superstar Bruno Fernandes while at PSG

THOMAS TUCHEL has revealed he once tried to sign Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.
Today, Chelsea’s former Paris Saint-Germain boss must try to stop the man whose impact on United has been ‘unbelievable’ according to the German.

Tuchel said: “My first sporting director in Paris was Antero Henrique, who is Portuguese.
“He knew Bruno very, very well. He fought hard to have a connection to him and to bring him to our team because he was a big personality for Sporting.
“An effective goalscorer, and an effective guy to make the other players around him dangerous.
“It was during my first year in Paris. We watched more and more games about him. We followed him and tried to be in touch with him to make it happen.

“He went another way. It’s bad for us, eh, that we have to play against him?”
Tuchel learned first- hand with PSG how important Fernandes is to United.
The Portuguese playmaker scored a penalty in United’s 2-1 away win over PSG in this season’s group stage, but Tuchel kept him quiet in a 3-1 win at Old Trafford in early December.
The Chelsea head coach said: “The impact he has since he arrived in Man United is indescribable. Unbelievable.

“Coming from Portugal —  stepping in here, one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, the strongest league in Europe, and to have this kind of impact, I have nothing but the biggest respect for this guy.
“He’s outstanding. He’s one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.
“He has a huge impact. He has such a big influence on their game, on their attacking game.
“It is key to defend against him, to be around him, to be close to him.”
The fortunes of Tuchel and United boss Ole Gunnar  Solskjaer have gone in opposite directions since PSG triumphed in that Champions League clash.
Tuchel was sacked later that month while the Norwegian has gone from strength to strength.
The Chelsea boss said: “I feel that he has a lot of support from his club.

“We could always feel that even in situations where results were missing, we could always feel from outside that this is THE guy, they have found the guy they trust.
“You have to earn it. If you don’t do it you lose the trust.
“I assume that this is not a gift for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. I assume he works hard for it.”
As for Tuchel, he knows he is under immense pressure every game, despite a terrific unbeaten Premier League start with four wins.
He said: “I know from outside I will be judged on every substitution, every line-up before the match, after the match.
“This is how it is, this is the big thing around football, but I don’t let myself be affected too much.”
But today’s result could depend  on how his Chelsea deal with Fernandes — the one that got away.

Leicester’s star Harvey Barnes tipped to play for England at 11 by primary school teacher after starring at King Power

ENGLAND star Harvey Barnes was tipped to play for his country when he was just 11.
Back in 2009, Barnes helped Greenfield Primary School win The Rice Bowl — the coveted Leicestershire and Rutland Schools trophy — for the first time.

The winger, holding the shield, was destined to go right to the top after starring for his primary school team

Now, at 23, Barnes is a capped Three Lions star and chasing the biggest titles in our national game.
Coaches from his loan stints in the EFL at MK Dons, Barnsley and West Brom, recall helping Barnes find his way.
But Nick Quinn, a coach with 25 years’ experience, remembers the moment he realised the Foxes winger would be on his way to the very top.
Quinn, Head of School at Greenfield, said: “Harvey was captain of the Year Six team and we were playing another big school, I think in the first round.

“We were 1-0 down and Harvey just took it upon himself. He demand-ed the ball, took it round three or four players, scored, took it to extra-time and we won.
“We went all the way to the final at the King Power Stadium. So in 2009, for the first time in our history, our name was engraved on the cup.
“I remember saying to my wife, ‘I think this kid is going to go on and play for England’.
“What put Harvey on a completely different level was his mindset and work ethic. He would never give up.”

Barnes had joined Leicester’s Academy at the age of nine and made his Foxes debut in a Champions League match in Porto on December 7, 2016, two days before his 19th birthday.
That same month, former Foxes full- back Robbie Neilson took over at League One MK Dons. A friend from his Leicester days, under-23s coach Steve Beaglehole, recommended Barnes as a loan signing.
Neilson, now in his second spell in charge of Hearts, said: “He came in and lit it up right away.”
Barnes joined the Dons on a Friday and three minutes into his debut as a substitute the next day, he scored the final goal in a 5-3 win over Northampton.
Neilson said: “It was a throw-in, he came short, then spun over his shoulder and popped it in the corner.
“Right away you think, ‘Aye, he’s decent, this kid, he’s got a chance’.
“You could tell from inside 30 seconds that he was different from everything else in League One.”
But just like in his Greenfield days, it was not just Barnes’ ability that made him special.

Barnes helped Greenfield Primary School win The Rice Bowl in 2009

Teacher Nick Quinn, back left, predicted to his wife the then-11-year-old would play for England
Neilson said: “One of the biggest things about him was that he took to the dressing room very well.
“We had a number of players in their early to mid-30s and it can be difficult for a kid to be taken into a group. But the boys loved him.”
Neilson would have loved to keep Barnes for the following season but Leicester sent him to Championship club Barnsley to step up his progress before recalling him in January 2018.
Barnes was heading for Leeds on another loan in July 2018 until a last-minute intervention by West Brom.
As the Baggies’ loan manager, Darren Moore had seen Barnes score a wonder goal early in his spell at Barnsley.
And after Moore became West Brom boss, he called in a favour with Leicester director of football Jon Rudkin and set up a meeting with Barnes and his dad Paul.
Moore said: “I told him, ‘You’re coming to me as a first-teamer — I’ve sold James McClean and you are going to play in that position’. I sold to him the vision of what the club wanted to do.
“He had already agreed terms with Leeds but I was delighted when he rang me on the Monday to say he was coming to us.”

It was a relief for all the other teams in our division that Harvey went back to Leicester
    Darren Moore

Moore was as good as his word. Barnes started all 26 Championship games in his spell at The Hawthorns, scoring a peach on his debut against Bolton and racking up nine goals and seven assists.
The problem for West Brom was that Barnes’ exploits suggested he was ready for the Leicester first team — and he was recalled.
Moore said: “I think it was a relief for all the other teams in our division that he went.
“Losing Harvey was a big blow. When we spoke to Leicester, I said, ‘Please don’t take the boy back and put him on the subs’ bench. He’s more than capable of playing’.
“They assured me he was going back to play.
“Everything he’s doing now, I’m not surprised at all.
“I said back then that he had the capabilities to play for England.”
Barnes returned to Leicester in January 2019 and Brendan Rodgers left Celtic to replace Claude Puel as Foxes boss the following month. Neither has looked back.

Neilson said: “I know Brendan well. His man-management is different class.
“They definitely suit each other: the way one plays and the way the other wants to play.”
At Quinn’s invitation, Barnes went back to where it all started to watch Greenfield win the Rice Bowl outright at the King Power in 2018.
And, in one of the corridors, there is a display dedicated to Barnes that includes two of his old school shirts, which he has signed.
Quinn said: “It’s there to say to the kids, ‘Here is someone who used to sit through our assemblies and who, through sheer hard work and determination, achieved his goals’.”

Wales ask government to make Euro 2020 warm-up against Albania on June 5 a test event to allow fans back into stadium

WALES have asked their government if the Euro 2020 send-off match against Albania can be a test event for bringing fans back into grounds.
SunSport understands the Welsh FA expressed an interest in hosting a pilot event for the June 5 friendly in Cardiff.

That game will be the final international match before the tournament begins.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said fans might return to stadiums on May 17.
However, that estimated date NOT apply to Wales.
Welsh fans have not seen Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Dan James play since Euro qualification was secured against Hungary in November 2019 due to Covid.

There is further uncertainty surrounding the national side over the futures of manager Ryan Giggs and FA chief executive Jonathan Ford.
Giggs, who was arrested in November on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend, had his bail extended until May 1 on Friday, leaving Wales in a state of limbo.
The Manchester United legend denies the allegations.
Welsh FA chiefs will discuss Giggs’ future to decide whether he will be in charge for the two World Cup qualifiers next month.
