Sam Allardyce adamant he will NOT quit West Brom if they go down and vows to only leave if they ‘sack me’

SAM ALLARDYCE will not walk out on his West Brom battlers if they are finally relegated this week. And he has promised supporters: “The only way to get me out of here is to SACK me!”
Sam Allardyce has vowed not to walk away if West Brom are relegatedCredit: PA
Big Sam, 66, is on the brink of being relegated from the top flight for the first time in 30 years as a manager.
He knows it would take one of football’s great miracles for the second-bottom Baggies to stay up.
Yet the great survivor has come out fighting ahead of Monday’s must-win Black Country showdown with Wolves and insists he wants to stay, regardless of what division they are in.
Big Sam has turned survival into an art form – somehow managing to keep up all eight top-flight clubs he has managed, including Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham.
And English football’s most famous firefighter said: “I will see it out to the very end, no matter what.
“The only way to get me out of here is to sack me. It would be a sad end if it comes to that – I just want us to get to the last game and still have a chance.
“We have some difficult games but we beat Chelsea and we’ve drawn with Manchester United and Liverpool, so let’s do the double over Wolves, go and beat Arsenal and see what happens.”

Allardyce’s contract runs until the end of the season when the veteran boss and West Brom both have a mutual option to terminate their relationship.
He continued: “Do I stay? That is not a discussion we can have until our final fate is decided.
“Hopefully I am staying. I am absolutely, certainly staying, if we can pull off this miracle and stay in the Premier League.”
Allardyce reckons it will not take long to thrash out his future and wants to lead the Baggies back to the Premier League at the first attempt, if they are sent down.
But he wants boardroom backing and accepts star players such as Matheus Pereira, Okay Yokuslu and Mbaye Diagne are unlikely to stay.
Allardyce admitted: “It all depends on if we can agree on what we need to get back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The meeting we had to say I was coming in didn’t need an awful lot of negotiations.
“It was a few questions, yes, no. Most of them were agreed on and I was through the door in a shot.
“I don’t think there will be any hesitation from both of us in sitting down for a couple of hours and ripping right through where we are and what we need to do.
“That is a discussion that can only be done when our fate is sealed one way or another.
“The criteria has to be met by both sides – me and the club – to agree that, ‘This is the way forward’.
“They might say, ‘Look, Sam, we’re going to go for somebody different, thank you very much’.

“And I’ll say, ‘That’s fine by me if that’s what you think. I apologise for not keeping you up. I’ve done all I possibly could’.
“Let’s just hope we’re not talking like that – but we’re in a very difficult position.”

Fury is due at ringside and AJ’s promoter Hearn said: “Next week could be massive.
“Hopefully we can announce the big one out there as Fury will be there.
“It would be amazing to announce that before or after the fight as it’s a massive show.”
It is understood both camps have the full contract for the world heavyweight unification fight, now scheduled for August 7 in Saudi Arabia.
Hopefully we can announce the big one out there as Fury will be thereEddie Hearn
Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum had thrown the mega-fight into doubt after claiming the Saudi venue was “a mirage” and the bout was “dead in the water”.
But AJ’s promoter Hearn insists the details of the contract are being agreed by both fighters’ lawyers and the Saudi government.
Hearn added: “We are all systems go. The fight is on, this fight is happening.
“All sides are reviewing the contract. I believe we will get an answer next week. I saw Bob Arum’s comments about the fight being dead but we know what we are doing.”

Man Utd vs Liverpool postponement wreaks HAVOC on Prem fixtures as chiefs try to fit game in tight window

THE Premier League fixture list has been thrown into chaos after Manchester United’s home clash with Liverpool was postponed due to furious fan protests. No new date for the game has yet been confirmed, with both clubs in urgent discussions to thrash out a plan.

The end-of-season run-in is tight, especially for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer given his side are set to play the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Roma in the Italian capital on Thursday.
United would normally fly out to Italy early on Wednesday.
They could, in theory, play against Liverpool today.
But the potential risk of a further fans protest was being assessed last night, especially given the heavy police involvement yesterday.
Liverpool might have to shift their game against West Brom on Sunday May 16 to the Monday and visit United on Friday 14 — the day before the FA Cup Final.
Both teams must play their last games of the season on May 23 at 4pm, with that kick-off time set in stone alongside the rest of the top-flight fixtures that day.
United and Liverpool are also in midweek action on May 19 — plus there is already a full fixture list next weekend.
The game was called off following furious fan protests as some angry supporters stormed onto the Old Trafford pitch.

United said in a statement: “Following discussion between the Police, The Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.
“Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.
“Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.  “However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger.
“We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations.”

Leicester launch £35m Boubakary Soumare raid as they back Brendan Rodgers in transfer market amid Tottenham links

BRENDAN RODGERS is making a stunning £35million bid to bring French midfielder Boubakary Soumare to Leicester City. The Foxes hope to agree a fee with Lille for their powerful star and offer him a deal worth around £5m to join them.

It is a huge statement by Leicester who are prepared to back Rodgers as they prepare for Champions League football – and keep him happy.
Soumare, 22, has been on Premier League wish lists for a couple of years, but the price tag has put off all previous attempts to sign him.
Newcastle and West Ham looked but stepped back, while Tottenham and Manchester United have also been linked.
However, Leicester are serious about spending big and hope to clinch the deal immediately.
Soumare has been a key part of Lille’s title bid with the Ligue 1 leaders one point clear of current champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Having made a name for himself at Stade Pierre-Mauroy after leaving PSG as a youngster, he has aroused the interest of several teams.
Soumare has over 100 appearances for Lille and 12 for France Under-21s.
The midfielder rejected a move out of Lille in January and boss Christophe Galtier praised how the player has dealt with speculation over his future.

Galtier said in February: “At every transfer window, we talk about him.
“I know that he was in demand this winter, but he was very clear with the president, he wants to continue with us.
“The competition, the transfer window, the situation has not always been easy for him, but I think he has greater clarity in his mind.”

His doctor Leopoldo Luque had called for an ambulance at midday.
But experts preparing a report for prosecutors heading a manslaughter probe put the time of his death at between 4am and 6am, reports say.
The 20-strong medical board is also set to confirm his death was caused by a pre-existing heart disease that was not being treated properly.

Argentinian media claims the board will call the former Barcelona star’s care following a brain blood clot op “negligent and incompetent”.
Dr Luque is among seven people under investigation.
    He denies any wrongdoing.

Roberto Martinez open to Prem return after Euros with Tottenham keeping tabs on Belgium manager

ROBERTO MARTINEZ is willing to come back to the Premier League after the Euros —  putting Tottenham and other clubs on alert. The coach spent years with Wigan and Everton before taking the reins of Belgium, who are now ranked  No 1 in the world.

Spaniard Martinez is believed to be on Spurs’ shortlist but they are unlikely to be the only suitors.
And Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is in no rush to appoint a successor to axed Jose Mourinho.
But while Martinez is under contract, it would not be difficult for him to leave after the Euro 2020 finals this summer.
Martinez  has trusted backroom staff who could take pre-season training at Spurs while he is with Belgium.
He has worked with top Belgian talents such as Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
But the chance to get back to daily involvement appeals to him.
As someone who plays a passing style admired by Spurs, they could be a good match as  Levy seeks a coach to please fans.
Tottenham are also huge admirers of Leicester chief Brendan Rodgers.

But a potential bill of £70million  has frightened off Levy.
Spurs would need to offer a four-year contract of £12.5m a season, plus Leicester’s expected compensation demands of £20m,
That’s similar to the sum Bayern Munich are paying RB Leipzig for ex-Spurs target Julian Nagelsmann.

Arsenal legend Charlie George reflects on legendary goal that won Gunners the double 50 years ago

CHARLIE GEORGE pauses — and you know something good is coming.Something that captures the significance of the moment, 50 years ago this week, when he celebrated the goal that would win Arsenal the Double by lying on his back, arms aloft, on the Wembley turf.
Charlie George lifts the cup after scoring an extra-time winner against Liverpool
George now works in corporate hospitality at Arsenal
George chuckled: “People said, ‘Who do you think you are, Jesus Christ?’ .“And I said, ‘On that Saturday afternoon, I was more important’.”
John Lennon once caused outrage by saying The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus”. And George was a rock ’n’ roll footballer with his long hair, his swagger and his anti-establishment attitude.
In the weeks, months and years after the 1971 FA Cup Final, kids from North London to Newcastle copied the celebration.
For young fans, it was the football equivalent of David Bowie’s seminal appearance on Top Of The Pops a year later — and George became a 1970s icon.
The man himself enjoys the pop-idol description. Now 70, George said: “Why not? I think it’s great. As a youngster, I loved all the Tamla Motown but the Rolling Stones were my favourites.
“And I scored the winning goal with my long hair. I didn’t know I was going to do it — it wasn’t planned. I just thought it was a great thing at the time.
What are you going to do? You’ve got to celebrate. Be different! I like to think I was different.”
George, the 20-year-old Islington boy turned superstar, was certainly different. But the celebration itself was actually the same one he had done earlier in the season.
Charlie George and Eddie Kelly celebrate after the 1971 FA Cup final win
As he explains elsewhere, in the fourth-round FA Cup tie at Manchester City, he lay in the Maine Road mud with his arms out to celebrate the second of his two goals in a 2-1 victory.
But millions more were watching when George beat Liverpool keeper Ray Clemence with a thunderous 20-yard shot deep into extra time to earn Arsenal a 2-1 win and the League and Cup Double.
It was 0-0 after 90 minutes then Steve Heighway put Liverpool ahead. Gunners sub Eddie Kelly levelled before George’s rocket.
He said: “People thought the celebration was new. It wasn’t, I’d already done it
“I was the first to do it, I think. There’s been a few copied it after.” That includes grown men in the street, even years later.
George, who still has a role with the Gunners, said: “I used to go and watch all the away games. But since I’ve been working for Arsenal, I’ve not been to too many.
“We played up at Everton once and I was coming out of the stadium afterwards. A guy ran out and said [he puts on a Scouse accent], ‘Hey, Charlie George’.
“He started laying on the floor, which was  funny because he was an Everton fan and the Cup Final goal was against Liverpool.”
But it’s Arsenal fans who love, and still love, George the most. Because he was — and is — one of them.
He grew up barely a mile from Highbury with three older sisters. His brother-in-law Joe took him to his first game when he was only five.
George said: “I scored the winner not just for the club but for the fans, because I was one.  Just to play for the club was special for me.
To actually score the winning goal — every boy dreams of scoring a goal in the Cup Final — in front of a hundred thousand.
“You’ve got all your mates up on the terraces, all your family. At the final whistle, I had a few tears in my eyes.
“To win Arsenal’s first league and FA Cup for years, to do the Double when the last team to do it was that mob at White Hart Lane, was an unbelievable feeling. You can’t describe it.”
Well, you can — but it gets you into trouble. George once claimed the adulation from the Highbury faithful and that Double-winning moment were “better than sex”.
He said: “I remember saying that. My wife didn’t think it was too clever at the time.”
George with former Leeds United manager Don Revie
George married Susan Farge in December 1971. They had a daughter named Kaana, but later divorced.
His relationship with Arsenal has had its ups and downs, too.
He left to join Derby in 1975 after one too many rows with Bertie Mee, the Double-winning manager he describes as “an a***hole, a little man with a chip on his shoulder”.
But something changed that demonstrated his strength of feeling for the Gunners.
He said: “I was physically sick before most of my games for Arsenal.“It was probably from the pressure of being a local lad, playing for the local team. When I went to Derby, it never happened.”
After his Rams spell, George went to the USA, Southampton, Hong Kong, Bournemouth and back to Derby.
He retired in 1984 but admits that May 8 1971, the day he scored that goal when was still only 20, was the highpoint of his career.
He lives close to the Emirates — “six minutes in a car” — and during the pandemic, club staff have missed his regular visits to the offices or just listening to him guide starstruck fans around the stadium on a Legends tour.

What makes a legend? George’s Arsenal career lasted just 179 games and featured 49 goals.
But what he gave in those games, what he won with one of those goals and what he did to celebrate it are a permanent part of Arsenal and football folklore.
Before every match at the Emirates, George is there on the big screens, lying on his back at Wembley as part of the video montage.
And every single day, he is there for all to see on the giant mural of Arsenal greats that runs around the ground.
George said: “To be put in the bracket of some of the great, great players we’ve had is nice.
“To be put on the wall around the stadium is special. It’s fantastic.
“And that’s going to be there for a long while, hopefully . . . unless someone takes it down!”
The legend of Charlie George will live on for another 50 years and well beyond.
