Erling Haaland transfer negotiations are like a prince’s marriage and only the wealthiest will be able to afford him

THE negotiations around Erling Braut Haaland resemble those before the marriage of a prince in years gone by.Monarchs depended on the knowledge of ambassadors and the bargaining power of favourite relations for securing a bride with a huge dowry, lands, a title of her own and, with luck, beauty.
Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is the most wanted striker in world footballCredit: Reuters
These negotiators travelled far and wide and were often well rewarded.
Should this remind readers of agent Mino Raiola and Alf-Inge Haaland, it is no coincidence — the couple have been on a tour of Europe inspecting possible match-ups for young Erling.
The fee for the 20-year-old blond giant and serial goalscorer is said to be £100-£150million — a sum only affordable to the wealthier aristocracy among clubs.
The two envoys have so far talked to hard-up Barcelona and Real Madrid and include the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea among their targets.
Erling may have liked to join Leeds, where he was born and where his father played for three years, but I don’t think they are in the running. And, make no mistake about it, money is the critical factor.
Daddy Haaland and his Italian mate are looking for, it is reported, £25m each in agent fees.
Should this or the transfer fee prove beyond the reach of clubs, then Erling will remain at Borussia Dortmund for a season more.
Dortmund spotted a big earner by astute operation in the teen market.

They spent quite a lot but must be thinking of a possible £300m profit from the eventual sales of England players Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, still only 17, plus Erling, who qualifies for the Three Lions but chose Norway.
The idea of a public tour to sell a lad’s services bothers me. Such avarice spoils the game’s image.
Players can be tempted by strong agent representation and the ability to prise every last pound from clubs. Not all, mind you.
City’s Kevin De Bruyne has just emerged with a contract to 2025 and a substantial pay rise. And he conducted his own business. Bravo to him.
Erling’s almost ten years younger and, it has to be said, his representatives have vast experience.

Roy Keane was fined £150,000 and banned for eight matches for his awful tackle on Alf-Inge HaalandCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Never mind that Raiola is ruthless and argumentative, his 100-strong roster shows that he is appreciated by players. I just wish that agents were under control.
Alf Haaland spent ten years here. He’s best known for his feud with Roy Keane, not an unusual state of affairs with the Irishman.
Haaland put him out of football for a year during a Leeds-Man United match and, being Keane, he set about his revenge when they met next in a City-United derby.
Keane was fined £150,000 and banned for eight matches for later admitting his red-card tackle was a deliberate act.

Haaland was forced to retire and later said: “I really dislike United and I can’t stand their players.”
Not exactly perfect grounds to start a negotiation — yet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managed Molde when Erling played there and dad may wish to change his mind.
Raiola has also said: “I don’t give a f*** if I never do another player with Manchester United.”
However, I think £25m each could persuade them otherwise and, anyway, United are a great club and shouldn’t be ruled out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may be struggling but England striker Harry Kane will want the Liverpool man at the Euros

AS debate rages over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England axing, one thing is certain in my mind — Harry Kane will want the Liverpool man at the Euros.Any centre-forward in the world would relish the trademark delivery Alexander-Arnold produced in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Arsenal last weekend.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is too good in an attacking sense to not earn an England recall for the Euros, says Troy DeeneyCredit: PA
Out-and-out strikers like Harry Kane relish the service from the like of overlapping right-back Trent Alexander-ArnoldCredit: Andy Hooper-The Daily Mail
    And any centre-forward would hope for a team-mate with Trent’s dead-ball ability at set-pieces.
When Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate left Trent out of his squad for last month’s World Cup qualifiers there was huge shock about it, especially as that was the last England party before the 23 is named for this summer’s tournament.
Many believe Trent will not be going to the Euros now — but I still think he will make the cut.
It is fair to say his performance at the Emirates last Saturday was at a far higher level than many he has produced this season and the same can be said of many in the Kop team.
But that cross  for Diogo Jota’s opening goal was picture perfect, it was world-class and it was  a forward’s dream.
The 22-year-old  whipped it in at pace,  with absolute accuracy, splitting the two centre-backs and all Jota had to do was guide his header home.
You freeze the action there, and there isn’t a single defender doing anything wrong — every Arsenal player is doing their job.
    The goal was almost unstoppable.
Uncapped Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the best defensive right-back available so should be in the England squad to man-mark special talentsCredit: Getty
Southgate has a wealth of options at right-back but there is no other full-back in England — and few in the world — who could make that cross.
Of course there are also doubts about Trent’s defensive abilities and he did make a poor error on Tuesday, leading to Real Madrid’s second goal in the Champions League quarter-final.
There are pros and cons about all of England’s right-backs.
Manchester City man Kyle Walker, 30, has rapid pace and is world-class at recovery runs but has also made occasional errors.
Although Southgate has suggested he will name only two right-backs in his Euros squad, I’d take Walker, Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 23, which would be very harsh on both Kieran Trippier and Reece James.
Wan-Bissaka is our best defensive right-back and I find it staggering that he has never been capped by England.
It’s remarkable that a £50million Manchester United regular can’t get close to the England squad.

But I’d like the option of Wan- Bissaka doing a man-marking job on a top-class winger such Antoine Griezmann or Leroy Sane at the Euros, because he is such a brilliant defender.
It seems as though Southgate is more likely to play a flat back-four as his plan A at the Euros and that he doesn’t fancy the Anfield right-back in that formation.
If and when he plays a back five, Walker could move to right centre-back and Trent at wing-back.
I like that idea, especially against the better teams and I am convinced Kane will like it too. If Jurgen Klopp’s side finish the season strongly, and Trent plays well, I still think he will make it.
Remember, this is a player who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League and Premier League triumphs.
And even if his form has been more bumpy this season, England cannot afford to leave out someone of that quality.
I respect the fact that Southgate makes strong decisions and knows his own mind.
If Liverpool recapture their old momentum, then I believe it will carry Trent to the Euros, where he will lay them on a plate for skipper Kane.
The 50-year-old phased out Wayne Rooney at the start of his England reign and Chris Smalling was completely frozen out a little later on.
But Trent will be back — this one is not an irreversible judgment from the England boss.
Today’s home match against Aston Villa is a fixture Liverpool will have been targeting.
They have lost six in a row at home, but haven’t played at Anfield in more than a month, and facing Villa without Jack Grealish looks a great chance to end that horrible run of form.
The Reds will probably tell you they are not out for ‘revenge’ after their extraordinary 7-2 hammering at Villa Park back in October — but they will be.
There will have been a huge embarrassment — and shock factor — about that result and they will be desperate to make amends.

If Liverpool can score two or three in the first half, Klopp will not ease up, and his team will want to score eight.
When the champions are in full flow, their full-backs — Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson — are always to the fore.
And if they can recapture their old momentum, then I believe it will carry Trent to the Euros, where he will be laying them on a plate for international skipper Kane.

Jesse Lingard is showing his class and West Ham’s mentality under David Moyes is shining through in every game

WHEN I look at West Ham I see a team who collectively feel they have a point to prove. In previous seasons, it seemed some players felt the club should be privileged that they were there.

Jesse Lingard has been sensational since joining on loan from Manchester UnitedCredit: Getty
But now they have a squad and a manager who feel proud to be at a club instead of using it as a stepping stone.
You have got Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma trying to prove their worth in the Premier League, as well as Craig Dawson trying to show he can still cut it.
Then Jesse Lingard who is showing his class after being given the opportunity after joining from Manchester United on loan.
On top of all that you have David Moyes managing them.
Who after a great career at Everton, was suffering from his experience of trying to succeed Alex Ferguson at United.
There is a mentality at the club which is shining through every game. And Moyes has got them playing to their strengths.
In the 30 games they have played this season, they have had less possession in 26.
They have become defensively solid and patient on the counter attack as we saw against Wolves last week.
And this has helped them both at home and away.

Only Man City have won more points at home this season than West Ham, which is quite an achievement when you look back at the effect the stadium move was having on them.
With no fans, they have been able to sit deep with no pressure which is also a great blueprint away from home.
They have conceded 37 so far which compared to the 62 last season, shows they have a solid defensive structure which allows them to master the counter attack.
Declan Rice would be missed in any Premier League side, he is an exceptional talent.
But in Mark Noble they have a club legend whose experience will be worth so much on the pitch for them.

Nobody expected them to challenge for the top four but you have to say now it is in their hands to finish there.
As with their sequence of games compared to their rivals, they are in the driving seat.
And the lack of pressure upon their shoulders puts them in a really good place.

Premier League urges Boris Johnson to back Covid vaccine passports to pack out stadiums this summer

THE Premier League has written to Boris Johnson to back vaccine passports to pack out stadiums this summer. The footy body and other major sports groups including the England and Wales Cricket Board, Wimbledon and the RFU told the PM and other party leaders ‘Covid certificates’ are needed to ditch social distancing in stadiums.

The letter says all the sports “can see the benefit that a Covid certification process offers” in order to fill out stands.
But they warn: “The final approach must not be discriminatory, should protect privacy, and have clear exit criteria.”
The letter was sent to the PM, Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer and the Westminster leaders of all the other parties.
It said that if certificates fail and attendance are capped for the foreseeable it will “be insufficient to end sport’s Covid financial crisis.”
From May 17 venues will be allowed to have limited numbers of fans back in grounds – up to 10,000 in bigger stadiums.
The FA Cup final on May 15 is a pilot mass event and will see 20,000 spectators return to watch live action.
Ministers announced ‘Covid-status certificates’ will be required later this year to stave off further waves of the virus.
They are expected to be based on vaccinations, recent tests or natural immunity.
Sports chiefs from the English Football League (EFL), the FA, the Lawn Tennis Association and Silverstone Circuit also back the proposals, saying in the letter: “It is important that we have certainty as soon as possible on the form this guidance will take so we can plan efficiently and effectively with many big sporting events scheduled for late June and onwards.
“The return of fans will give a huge boost to millions who enjoy a day out at a sporting event with their friends and families and be of great benefit to the economy.
“It is right that every possible action is considered to secure this outcome as soon as possible, but only for as long as an unrestricted return is considered unsafe to fans, matchday staff and the wider public.
“This includes investigating how a Covid certification arrangement could reduce and then safely remove the requirement for social distancing.”

They also reiterate that certificates should never be used for grassroots sports.
A Government spokesperson said: “We welcome the constructive approach from major British sports as we explore how testing Covid certification and other steps can help get more fans back into stadiums and other large events safely.
“We want as many fans as possible to be able to enjoy a great British summer of sport, safely.”
Small Business minister Paul Scully says at the moment the review of COVID-status certification is looking at large ‘ticketed events’ More

He has now completed every World Cup and Euros album produced by Panini since 1974.
And he is already busy filling in his Euro 2020 sticker album.
Brighton and Hove Albion fan Simon said: “Half the fun is the hunt. I’ve needed two for France 98 for absolutely forever but the badges, the foils, are particularly hard to come across.
“I was always led to believe there was equal numbers printed, But I swear it’s not the case.”

Over the years he has spent up to £10,000 on packs of stickers, selling swaps online to fund his habit and buying missing stickers from Europe, Egypt and the US.

It’s 34 years today since we won the Littlewoods Cup. Being captain of @Arsenal is very very special. Liverpool were always difficult. When Ian Rush had scored they never lost, but Charlie Nick scored twice. We were all a bit nervous obviously. Great memories. It was fantastic. pic.twitter.com/QYUPkoyMSJ— Kenny Sansom (@KennySansom03) April 5, 2021

Sansom spent months in hospital for treatment after the attack in May last year.
Taking to Twitter he said: “Hi everyone, I’m back. I’m feeling good.
“I’m walking okay, but I couldn’t play football.
“I know I’m improving, so that’s good news. I’m going for walks every day.

In December last year Sansom, 62, was diagnosed with a brain disorder called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.
His symptoms include impaired memory, vision changes and ataxia – a degenerative disease of the nervous system that include slurred speech and incoordination.

Conor Benn reveals secret weapon ahead of Samuel Vargas showdown – his 13-year-old training partner Beau

CONOR BENN is banking on old-school training methods taking him to the top of the welterweight class. The 24-year-old son of British ring legend Nigel prefers brutal early-morning road work along freezing Southend Pier to the new-age HIIT classes in every trendy, warm gym.
Conor Benn has been hard at work in training alongside 13-year-old Beau MacDonald
Benn is aiming for 18th career win at the SSE Arena in Wembley on Saturday
And he has a secret weapon in 13-year-old training partner Beau MacDonald, who has chased him into shape for Saturday’s clash with dangerous Colombian Samuel Vargas.
After meeting SunSport at the crack of dawn, Benn said: “Sports science has moved on so much now and not everyone wants to get up before sunrise for long runs.
“But, for me, it is the mental aspect of it that is important.
“It’s not always about how far you go or what time you do it in, it’s the fact that you have the desire to drag yourself out of bed to do it.
“I started this camp at the beginning of January and Beau — who is one of the best runners in the country for his age —— has been with me from the start, going two or three times a week.
“I get up at 5am to drive down to where he lives and get the miles in.
“Our fastest time for five miles in this camp has been 31 minutes — and Beau more than plays his part in that.”
Benn will have Beau to thank if he earns 12th knock-out win against Vargas
Victory at the weekend could set-up bout with Amir Khan or Kell Brook
Before the impressive step-up win over German Sebastian Formella in November, 24-year-old Benn gave an emotional interview in which he cried over being kept apart from his Australia-based family and missing his little sister’s birthdays.
But in Southend United academy prospect Beau, he has found a surrogate sibling who makes him run fast and laugh hard.
Benn said: “We are competitive. It’s a bit like a big-brother-little-brother rivalry.
“But I am also always there for him as well because this new generation coming through has a tough time.
“Beau has been doing these runs and then going to school straight after, he’s an incredibly dedicated boy and he’s really been pushing me.
“No-one can make me laugh the way he does, especially not at 5am in the morning on freezing cold runs next to the sea.
“Sometimes he comes out with things beyond his years and Richard, The Sun’s photographer, has even grabbed some shots of me laughing, which doesn’t happen very often.
“But having someone young and fresh running with me makes it exciting and fun.”
Here’s how the two fighters compare ahead of the showdown
Depending on how hard trainer Tony Sims has been pushing Benn in the gym, the beach runs range from 5km dashes to hour-long challenges.
Word on the seafront is Beau occasionally has the beating of the 17-0 Destroyer.
But the Essex ace — who is after a huge domestic battle with 10st 7lb veterans Amir Khan or Kell Brook — claims looking after the next generation is all part of his throwback mentality.
He laughed and said: “I wouldn’t get carried away and say he beats me. I let him grab the occasional draw to keep his morale up.
“There’s not an ounce of fat — or even much muscle — on him yet, he just seems to glide along, which really pushes me.

“My times have absolutely improved by having him on my heels all the time and pushing me. When the fight comes around, moments before, during rounds when it’s getting tough, I will know that I have not been complacent, I know I have cut no corners.
“Running might be seen as a bit old-fashioned and not as cool as the high-intensity stuff you can do in gyms and online now.
“But all the great old fighters did their road work and that is good enough for me.”
