Hereford boss Josh Gowling plays Call of Duty with team and says ‘they think I’m a fossil so I showed them a few things’

YOU have heard about a manager slaughtering their players after a bad performance – metaphorically, at least. But one tech-savvy boss has taken to killing his squad virtually too in a bid to combat the limits the pandemic has imposed on team-bonding.
Hereford manager Josh Gowling, left, is open to using computer games to bond with his National League North squadCredit: Instagram @hereford_fc
Former Gillingham and Kidderminster defender Josh Gowling is shooting for the top as a manager, including going to war with his Hereford players… online
Hereford chief Josh Gowling, 37, is one of the new generation of gaffers who grew up playing computer games.
Lockdown has prevented the former Bournemouth defender from using traditional methods to bring his players closer together.
So instead he has capitalised on his troops’ love of Call of Duty by setting up staff v squad ‘warzone’ sessions to boost morale.
Gowling told SunSport: “Team bonding is a massive thing for a football club and not being able to go to any venue to do it, Call of Duty was the next best thing.
“All of the lads play it. They think I’m a fossil because I’m 37 and that I don’t play computer games, so I had to show them a few things when I went on it.
“The staff v lads warzones are great because when we next go into training, the lads are buzzing, especially when they’ve won and killed me a few times!
“We’ve done it a few times and it’s worked well for us. The lads are in groups on mics so three is communication, organisation and strategy all built into it.
“We work a lot on pressing in training. One of the lads killed me and then messaged me saying, ‘Gaffer, your press wasn’t right there!’”
“You have to understand what motivates players, what they do in down-time, what makes players happy. If we have a common theme, why not use it as a tool.
The idea of a boss playing shoot-em-up computer games with their squad may seem strange at first to some.
But the more you consider how gaming has become integral to many modern footballers’ lives – plus how difficult Covid-19 has made managing a team – the more it makes sense.
Gowling used to play Football Manager during his playing days which saw him turn out for the likes of Gillingham, Grimsby and Danish side Herfolge.
It has given him an understanding and appreciation of the gaming industry.
While he has even incorporated methods he learnt from the manager series into real life, particularly when it comes to training workloads.
The articulate former centre-back is also a qualified counsellor and has a psychology degree.
Both feats have played a role in his style of management which contrasts with the old-school approaches he often experienced in his playing days.
The ex-Kidderminster ace explained: “You have to understand what motivates players, what they do in their down-time. You need to know what makes players happy.
Josh Gowling’s ideas are similar to those of Brighton chief Graham PotterCredit: PA
“If we can all have a common theme that we enjoy, why not use it as a tool to bring us all together. We’ve done that with gaming and other things along the way.
“Our environment is very much about us building together as a group, rather than me dictating and barking orders. Players want more than that nowadays.”
Gowling’s philosophy, which is reminiscent of Graham Potter’s style at Brighton, was working well for Hereford this season until the National League North was declared null and void in February due to Coronavirus.
The Bulls play their first game in a month when they play National League Woking on Saturday in the FA Trophy semi-final.
Win and their next clash will not be until May when the final takes place at Wembley.
Lose and the wait will be until September when the new season starts – and all the squad will be furloughed.
The possibility of either a long delay or an interminable one for their next fixture sums up what has been a season of Covid-caused “mayhem”.
Hereford have had clubs fail to turn up to matches at the last minute while players who have never had other jobs in their lives have had to pick up side-work to pay their bills.

Gowling added: “Amazon delivery has about 20 of our players!
“No computer game can gear you for what we’ve gone through.
“But it shows you how resourceful we can be as a club. The lads have been adaptive and us staff have too during this nightmare.”

But Gareth Bale and co are set to take on the star-studded World Cup holders as part of their preparations for the finals.
It would set up an intriguing clash between the Real Madrid loanee and one of their top transfer targets in Kylian Mbappe.
Wales already have a farewell game against Albania lined up in Cardiff on June 5.
Prior to that, the Welsh FA plan to head to Portugal for a training camp at the end of May before a possible away day in France on June 2 at a venue to be confirmed.
France have superstars Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba in their ranks.
Wales lost 3-1 to Belgium in their opening 2022 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.
They faced the French in a friendly back in November 2017 under Chris Coleman with Les Bleus running out comfortable 2-0 winners at the Stade de France.

Following the proposed French test, Wales hope to have fans back for the visit of Albania to the Cardiff City Stadium.
SunSport revealed last month the Welsh FA have expressed an interest in the Euro send-off match being a pilot event for bringing supporters, possibly even 5,000 fans, back into grounds.
Wales will find out the extent of Joe Allen’s muscle injury on Friday following a scan.

Swansea centre-back Brandon Cooper, 21, has been called up with James Lawrence unavailable for the next two games.
The St Pauli defender, who started in Belgium, cannot travel to Cardiff and face Mexico and the Czech Republic due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Dillian Whyte will find out soon enough if brutal Alexander Povetkin KO has made him gun-shy

DILLIAN WHYTE, brutally knocked out by Alexander Povetkin seven months ago, will find out if he’s gun-shy when he seeks vengeance on Saturday night.Whyte was out cold before he hit the canvas when Povetkin’s pulverising left uppercut crashed against his chin.
Dillian Whyte will get his chance at revenge against Alexander Povetkin on Saturday nightCredit: Mark Robinson Matchroom Boxing
Though he had fully recovered within minutes, there’s no knowing what psychological scars that devastating blow has left him with.
Being gun-shy is a term used to describe the mental state that often affects fighters who have been on the receiving end of traumatic knockouts.
It can cause someone who usually is aggressively attack-minded to go into their shell and be defensively cautious.
On Saturday night in Gibraltar, Whyte will find out if he is afflicted with the condition as soon as the opening bell sounds and the man who damaged him so severely starts walking towards him.
I believe Anthony Joshua was gun-shy in both his fights after Andy Ruiz bounced him off the floor four times to take his world heavyweight titles nearly two years ago in New York.
Six months later in Saudi Arabia, Joshua got them back in the return with a unanimous points decision — but he was extremely tentative throughout. And he was just as cagey against Kubrat Pulev four months ago.
Whyte’s shock defeat by the powerful Povetkin certainly cost him dear.Going into the ring with the Russian that night, he was the mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury’s WBC world heavyweight crown.
The WBC has now relegated him to No 7 in the rankings — one below Joe Joyce. If that doesn’t fire up Dillian, nothing will.

They say revenge is sweet and also it’s best served cold. Whyte should be made aware history sometimes has a nasty habit of repeating itself.
Perhaps the most famous case of a revenge bid turning disastrously sour was 58 years ago when Floyd Patterson tried to get his world heavyweight title back from Sonny Liston, who had KO’d him in the first round in Chicago.
In the Las Vegas return Liston promptly blasted him to another opening-round humiliation. The only consolation for Floyd was that he had at least lasted four seconds longer!
Closer to home, in 2013, George Groves complained bitterly he had been stopped prematurely in the ninth round when he challenged Carl Froch for his super-middleweight title in Manchester.
Six months later, after successfully campaigning for an immediate return, Groves was flattened by a perfect right hook in the eighth in front of 80,000 awe-struck fans at Wembley.
It will be fascinating to see how Whyte — the firm favourite — approaches Povetkin this time.

George Groves felt he was stopped early against Carl Froch but was knocked out in the second boutCredit: Getty

For someone who survived being stabbed and shot in his youth, he should not be fearful of anything or anyone.
Povetkin still carries a concussive punch but if Dillian can’t beat a 41-year-old who was recently in hospital with Covid-19, he should be in another line of business.

I COULDN’T get too excited when Lawrence Okolie stopped pathetic Pole Krzysztof Glowacki to win the vacant WBO world cruiserweight title.
Okolie got rave reviews but the WBC, WBA and IBF haven’t got Glowacki in their top 15.

How soccer ace Frank Worthington bedded a different woman every night – but had no regrets

FORMER England striker Frank Worthington was a legend for strutting his stuff at clubs across the land and satisfying adoring fans with his keepy-uppy.The question always lingered, though, how much of a star Frank would have been if he’d reserved those skills for the football pitch.

The cult hero passed away after a long battle with dementia
For this mercurial talent, who has died at the age of 72, was just as well known for his inexhaustible exploits in the bedroom and on the dancefloor as his prowess in front of goal.
He boasted of sleeping with a different woman every night, bedding a teenager followed by her mother and dating a string of beauties.
They included Miss World Mary Stavin, Miss Barbados Lindy Field, Profumo Affair model Mandy Rice-Davies, his first wife Birgitta who won Miss Sweden and his second spouse Carol Dwyer, who had been a Page 3 Girl.
And when he was asked to name his ‘previous clubs’ he answered: “The Playboy, Tramps and Sandpiper.”
A flamboyant maverick, who sported flowing long hair, a manicured moustache, medallion and John Travolta flares, Frank’s passion for the high life cost him his chance to reach the very top.
A record breaking deal to sign for Liverpool in 1972 fell through because two weeks of sex and partying left him with high blood pressure.
While his England caps ended at just eight after manager Don Revie discovered Frank had ignored a strict curfew by going out drinking and gambling at a casino.
BORN TO PLAY THE BEAUTIFUL GAME
Frank, who played for 24 clubs including Leicester City and Leeds United, also confessed to taking cocaine and nearly drove a car off a cliff in Spain.
Extravagant spending, including buying a Ford Mustang and drinking champagne at breakfast, left him bankrupt when he couldn’t pay the taxman.

But he wouldn’t have changed anything.
Frank said: “Yeah, I was a bit of a rascal. I loved football and the ladies and I was not prepared to give up either. Why should I? I never have regrets. I did all right for myself, thanks very much.”
A naturally gifted attacker, Frank was born to play the beautiful game.
The West Yorkshireman, from the village of Shelf near Bradford, was the son of two football players, with his dad Eric turning out for Halifax Town and mum Alice for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
He quickly made a big impression at his first club Huddersfield Town, scoring 41 goals in 171 appearances.
I loved football and the ladies and I was not prepared to give up either. Why should I?Frank Worthington
Huddersfield were not exactly a glamour club, but that didn’t stop Frank becoming a major attraction.
Shortly after leaving the club in 1972 he boasted: “I was pulling girls every night. Sometimes I’d wonder if they were with me because I was Frank Worthington, the footballer, or if they genuinely fancied me as a bloke.
“But I soon realised this didn’t matter a damn.”
He kept a flat in Leeds so the club did not know about his “nocturnal activities” or that he was “abusing my body” by staying out late.

Frank’s ability to juggle the ball on the pitch and go past defenders at will persuaded Liverpool manager Bill Shankly to offer a then £150,000 club record to sign him.
Having put pen to paper, Frank failed two medicals.
There were rumours that he had a sexually transmitted disease, but the player insisted it was blood pressure due to constant carousing.
Before the second medical, Shankly sent Frank off on holiday to relax.
Instead the player seduced a young woman on the aeroplane and went on a two week bender with her.
With Liverpool out of the picture, Frank signed for Leicester City instead, scoring 72 goals in 210 games for the Midlands side.
Ex-Leicester and England star Gary Lineker described him last night as “my boyhood hero” and a “wonderful character”.
In 1973 Frank married his first wife Birgitta, who had already given birth to his son Frank Junior.
Displaying some eye-raising parental priorities he said he wanted to teach Frank Junior “all the tricks” so he could be “the greatest Casanova of all time”.
Frank also had a daughter, Kim-Malou, with Birgitta but parenthood did not slow him down.

LEGENDS of the game, footie experts and celebrity fans paid tribute to Frank on social media.

He later confessed: “In my Leicester days, it wasn’t a night out unless you were in at six in the morning after a visit to the Playboy Club.”
Around 1978 the marriage broke down, giving Frank the freedom to play the field even more.
In his autobiography One Hump or Two?, which certainly wasn’t a reference to camels, he wrote extensively about his sexual exploits.
Describing meeting a Belgian brunette in Magaluf, he wrote: “It was appropriate that she came from Knokke, because you should have seen her Knokke-ers when I got them out back at my villa.”
Never shy about discussing his pulling prowess, he also told a journalist what happened after bedding a teenager in Sweden.
He said: “Next morning, after the girl had got up early for work, her ‘muzzer’ woke me up with a cup of tea. She was young and attractive, so what was a man supposed to do?”
‘I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BIT OF A PEACOCK’
Great pals with the late George Best he lived with Lindy, the sister of the Manchester United star’s first wife Angie.
But Frank – described as “the working man’s George Best” by the late Bolton manager, Ian Greaves – reckoned he was even more of a womaniser than the Belfast ladies’ man.
He said: “This is where I differ from George Best. He wants everyone to love him. I just wanted every girl to go to bed with me.”

Many England fans wondered why Frank, whose majestic skills were compared to Best, didn’t play more for his country.
Frank thought it was because his unconventional approach upset the national side’s bosses.
Sir Alf Ramsey swore when he turned up to fly with the England team wearing cowboy boots, a velvet jacket and silk shirt.
Frank, who reckoned he was ‘the first man in Britain to own a tank top’, said: “I suppose I have always been a bit of a peacock.”
Best wants everyone to love him. I just wanted every girl to go to bed with me.Frank Worthington
He also upset England’s caretaker manager Joe Mercer by sneaking a girl up to his hotel room after a game.
Tough guy boss Revie wasn’t so forgiving when Frank ignored his clear instructions not to go out.
Slipping out the hotel through a side door with a few other England players they visited a casino.
Gambling was a major part of football back in those days and one marathon card game in 1974 went on until 9am in the morning after England beat Bulgaria.
Newcastle United striker Malcolm Macdonald ended up losing £1,200 to Frank. Living close to the edge was what Frank was used to.
He once recalled: “On one trip to Spain, I was driving a car with three other players and ended up crashing it and almost going over the end of a cliff.
“When we walked back the next day, there was the car balancing on the edge of a big drop.”
The football legend spoke extensively about his sexual exploits in his autobiography One Hump or Two?
That wild behaviour went too far when Frank was playing for Birmingham City between 1979 and 1982.
He confessed to smoking cannabis and snorting cocaine through a bank note. It was, he admitted, a mistake.
Elvis fan Frank said: “I don’t see any harm in trying things out, but drug taking is certainly not something I would recommend to anyone.”
Around that time he declared bankruptcy because he couldn’t pay off tax bills of £36,000.
Gradually, though, he started to calm down and after he married second wife Carol in 1986 he was content to be in bed by 10pm.
Despite failing that Liverpool medical Frank played until he was aged 43, running out for over 20 clubs here and in the US, before finally hanging up his boots in 1992.
The only silverware he picked up during that long career was the old Division Two title with Huddersfield Town.
Frank also won the Golden Boot title in 1979 for the 24 goals he scored for Bolton Wanderers in the top division.
But he had to sell that precious memory in 2005 to fund his retirement.

Frank’s cause of death has not been announced. His daughter claimed in 2016 that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s due to heading the ball during his playing days. But Frank denied suffering from the brain disease.
After his death his wife Carol said in a statement: “Frank brought joy to so many people throughout his career and in his private life.
“He will be greatly missed by everyone who loved him so much.”

Frank, who reckoned he was ‘the first man in Britain to own a tank top’, said: “I suppose I have always been a bit of a peacock.”

Man City’s Quadruple bid can help England win Euro 2020, says John Stones on international return after two years

JOHN STONES reckons quadruple-chasing Manchester City can help England win Euro 2020.Defender Stones, Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden are on a mission to bag a stunning clean sweep of trophies for City before setting their sights on Euro glory this summer.

The former Everton centre-back, whose team face San Marino in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday, said: “If we can bring that winning mentality into the England squad it would be invaluable.
“It would be massive for us if we can keep pushing and keep fighting at City until the end of the season and see what happens.
“I’d love everyone in the England squad to be coming in camp after winning something but that’s not possible.”
Stones, who has 39 caps, has not played for England since facing Montenegro in November 2019.
But he is certain to feature in the World Cup qualifiers which will also see the Three Lions visit Albania on Sunday and then entertain Poland on Tuesday.
And he revealed his nerves before getting the text saying he was in the squad.
He added: “I was at home the other day, waiting for the text to see if I was in. Time goes a bit slower when you are sat about, waiting for something to happen. It was a special moment. A really special moment.
“It was a relief. I was very nervous. I had worked so hard and I was hearing people say “you should be in”. But I didn’t take any of that in until the text arrived. I wanted to hear from a good source! I was absolutely made up.

“It was very tough watching England at home on TV and I think it would be the same for everyone.
“You feel a bit helpless that you can’t contribute and be a part of the squad, but I used it as a motivation to strive to be better.
“So when I got the text the other day, it was a great feeling to be back involved and see all the faces I’ve got some great memories with.
“Me and the manager texted now and then. We’ve worked together for so many years now, from the U21s. I’m sure he’s like that with everyone else. He’s that type of character and wants to make you feel involved, which is great.”
Boss Gareth Southgate has delivered a big speech to the squad stressing that the road to the World Cup in Qatar next year starts now.

He urged the importance of the three qualifiers and that the players should forget any negativity about the number of games they are having to play.
England’s players last night staged a meeting over whether to take the knee before the three games.
The squad are now aware they will not be breaking any rules if they choose to do so.

Ben Godfrey, Eddie Nketiah, Tom Davies and Aaron Ramsdale are England Under-21s leadership group aiming for Euro glory

BEN GODFREY has made it his mission to ensure standards do not slip this week as England look to exorcise some demons.Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21s take on Switzerland in Thursday’s Group D opener at the Euros.

Finish in the top two and they will progress to the knockout stage, which takes place between May 31 and June 6.
Should they do so, they would be going one better than the 2019 Euro campaign when a star-studded squad featuring Phil Foden, James Maddison and Godfrey’s Everton colleague Dominic Calvert-Lewin crashed out at the group phase.
That squad was accused of complacency. And Godfrey — part of a four-man leadership team along with Tom Davies, Aaron Ramsdale and Eddie Nketiah — said: “There’s a few of us to help keep those standards high and help people out when they need it.

“Being a leader is something that  I enjoy doing — setting standards and helping people, driving people forward.
“We’ve got a lot of young players so it’s important as a senior member that I do that.”
Unlike the majority of his squad-mates, Toffees defender Godfrey, 23, was not produced by a swish academy.
Instead, he had to graft his way up the divisions, beginning with hometown club York City after being rejected by nearly every side in  Yorkshire after trials.
But he benefited hugely from that early experience and has already racked up 174 professional games.
And the ex-Shrewsbury loanee said: “I wouldn’t change my journey for anything. It’s been an enjoyable one.
“A lot of people think it’s just been an upwards journey but it’s not necessarily been the case. You’ve got to be mentally strong when things don’t go your way.”
Godfrey will likely face the Swiss alongside Chelsea centre-back Marc Guehi, currently on loan at Swansea.

Guehi is one of six players in the squad — with Emile Smith Rowe, Steven Sessegnon, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher and Rhian Brewster — who won the Under-17 World Cup together in 2017.
And Ivory Coast-born Guehi, 20, said: “It’s fantastic having all us boys  together.
“What we have here is a real togetherness — we just love playing together. That’s one big component to go on and win a competition.”
