Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish face missing out on England’s Euro 2020 squad with Jesse Lingard impressing Southgate

JESSE LINGARD is emerging as a wildcard selection for Gareth Southgate’s 23-man Euros squad. The midfielder, a stalwart of England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, has come from nowhere to be a serious contender again.

His outstanding form on loan at West Ham had earned the Manchester United outcast a shock call-up to Southgate’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers — and Lingard played in all three.
When naming that party, Southgate admitted Lingard, 28, had been ‘lucky’ to be included, because of injuries to Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, James Maddison and Harvey Barnes.
But it is believed that Southgate has been so impressed by Lingard’s form, as well as his huge popularity within the squad, that he is trying to figure out who to omit to find room for him.
That could mean the axe for Sancho or Grealish — both would be huge calls.
Three Lions boss Southgate revealed he is already telling his players whether or not they are likely to make his Euros squad — two months before the final decisions are confirmed.
He said: “I’ve spoken to quite a few so that they know exactly where they sit.
“You’ve got to manage expectations about what they might need to do between now and the end of the season.
“And, of course, everybody is so close. It’s not something anybody sees outside the camp, but when you’ve got players training at the right level every day, encouraging each other through those sessions, socially getting on well.

“It’s not all about that social part, but the part where you accept being on the bench, accept playing your part and not playing the number of minutes.
“That is critical and was important to us getting nine points.”
Southgate claimed England’s 2-1 win over Poland was a boost for team spirit.
He said: “We often talk about team spirit and going out for meals, or nights out. But spirit is grown by winning important matches together.”

Harry Kane set to STAY at Tottenham with club refusing to sell him to Prem rival and wanting £175m from foreign clubs

HARRY KANE is set to stay at Tottenham this summer with the club refusing to let him join another Premier League team. And unless the big guns in Spain are able to come up with the £175million that would be needed to get the England captain out, Kane, 27, accepts he will be a Spurs player next season.
Kane, 28, will be denied a move this summerCredit: Getty
Kane realises he might have to quit his boyhood club to win football’s biggest prizes — but he is loyal to Tottenham, he loves the club and is not currently willing to force his way out.
The star striker has three years to run on the bumper contract he signed in June 2018 and hopes the club will match his ambitions in that time.
But SunSport understands Spurs are ready to dig their heels in and make it almost impossible for him to get away before then if Kane did make the first move.
Chairman Daniel Levy will not do business with any Premier League club — blowing a hole in the hopes of either of the Manchester giants luring him away.
And with a value in excess of £175m, Continental clubs — who have been financially ravaged by Covid — will be unable to afford him.
Real Madrid are the most likely club to try to make a move and Kane would not rule out a switch there but the fee is currently unachievable.
Spurs will not be bullied into letting their biggest star leave just because his head may be turned by other options elsewhere.
Despite unrivalled service to Tottenham throughout his career, he will not be granted a transfer away without a fight.

Levy is already regarded as one of the most difficult to deal with when it comes to agreeing deals on selling players.
European giants like Barcelona and Real Madrid have been interested in the past but their own financial problems make them unlikely to come to the table with any  genuine offer.
Spurs also know that with players such as Erling Haaland, 20, and 22-year-old Kylian Mbappe available, they offer better long-term value for big money than Kane who will be 28 by the start of next season.
Kane, who has 27 goals this campaign, is set to finish as Tottenham’s top scorer for the seventh season running and needs another 52 to beat Jimmy Greaves’ club record of 266.
His 160 Prem goals put him ninth on the division’s all-time scorers — exactly 100 behind Alan Shearer’s leading mark.

How England should line up at Euro 2020 as SunSport reporters pick their XIs and squads

ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate has some big decisions ahead as he picks his 23-man squad for the European Championships. And the decisions won’t get any easier as the 50-year-old then has to pick a starting XI and favoured formation for the tournament opener against Croatia on June 13.
Gareth Southgate is set to make, and break, player’s dreams for the EurosCredit: AFP
Here, four of SunSport’s esteemed reporters give their squads and starting XI for the Euros.
    DAVE KIDD

THERE are some tough decisions to make – especially at right-back and in wide areas, where England have a wealth of talent.
Reece James, Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard may all make Southgate’s squad and Kalvin Phillips certainly will, but they all miss out on my 23.
And Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence has certainly caused ire on Merseyside but he is now relying on injuries to make the squad.
The starting line-up is slightly easier, going with Southgate’s preferred 4-2-3-1 – although Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish will be pressing hard for starts.
SQUAD: Pickford, Pope, D Henderson, Walker, Trippier, Maguire, Stones, Mings, Coady, Chilwell, Shaw, Rice, J Henderson, Bellingham, Ward-Prowse, Mount, Foden, Grealish, Saka, Sterling, Rashford, Kane, Greenwood.

    CHARLIE WYETT

SOUTHGATE should revert to a back three with wing-backs for Euro2020. And I would still start Trent Alexander-Arnold.
My formation would be different if Jordan Henderson was definitely going to be fit and ready but this seems unlikely.
But the current central midfield is not experienced enough to give protection to the defence so I would have three at the back and use Alexander-Arnold’s attacking ability along with Ben Chilwell’s.
We keep talking about playing to our attacking strengths. But like Portugal in 2016, we have to concentrate on not conceding first and the rest should follow.
Up front, Phil Foden gets in ahead of Marcus Rashford.
Jude Bellingham should scrape into Southgate’s squad of 23 as he offers something different.
I don’t think Jordan Henderson will be 100 per cent fit and on too many occasions – although not the last World Cup – England have taken injured players.
Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and Eric Dier, because of his versatility, all squeeze in. No place for James Maddison, Bukayo Saka, Kieran Trippier or Reece James.
SQUAD: Pickford, Pope, Henderson, Alexander-Arnold, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Dier, Mings, Chilwell, Shaw, Mount, Rice, Ward-Prowse, Bellingham, Sancho, Foden, Grealish, Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Calvert-Lewin, Ings.
    MARTIN LIPTON

IF England are going to win, they need to utilise their best assets – attacking.
The more forward options, the better. No places for Walker, Coady, Phillips or Shaw in my squad, with Trippier the cover full-back allowing me to go with the youth and exciting potential of Saka and Bellingham.
Toughest cut is Shaw – ironic as he went to the 2014 World Cup as a teenager instead of Ashley Cole. But Saka is too good to omit.
I need to get Grealish’s creativity into the side and am backing Mount and Foden to work back alongside Rice when required.
SQUAD: Pickford, Pope, Henderson; Alexander-Arnold, James, Stones, Maguire, Mings, Chilwell, Trippier, Rice, Henderson, Mount, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Ward-Prowse, Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Sancho, Calvert-Lewin, Grealish.
    MARK IRWIN

SOUTHGATE will be tempted to revert to a back three after seeing this week how easily a back four can be damaged by one defensive lapse.
But picking an extra central defender limits the team’s attacking options and sends out negative signals to the opposition.
Pickford definitely returns in goal because of his superior distribution and Stones stays at centre-half despite his propensity to occasionally switch off.
I was tempted to omit Jordan Henderson as there is no guarantee he will be completely match fit in June following his long lay-off.
But there is a real lack of midfield leadership without the Liverpool captain and even if he isn’t ready to start at the Euros his big match experience will be crucial to the squad.
Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood haven’t done enough in recent months to warrant a place in my squad although you could argue that having Foden, Grealish, Mount and Maddison ahead of Ward-Prowse or Winks is a bit too gung-ho.
SQUAD: Pickford, Pope, Henderson, Trippier, James, Walker, Maguire, Stones, Keane, Chilwell, Shaw, Rice, Phillips, Henderson, Bellingham, Mount, Foden, Grealish, Maddison, Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Calvert-Lewin.

Sir Alex Ferguson claims Wayne Rooney couldn’t handle his booze & he was powerless to stop the striker having affairs

Sir Alex met former Labour spin-doctor Alastair in 2010 — days after it was revealed married Rooney slept with a £1,000-a-night prostitute.
Alastair wrote in newly released diaries: “We chatted about Rooney. He sounded a bit down about him. The papers had been full of Rooney and prostitutes. I said, ‘What are you going to do about him?’
He replied, ‘What can I do? He is also the last guy who should take a drink’.”
Alastair, 63, also revealed Sir Alex feared an exodus of United stars over Rooney’s alleged attitude.
He writes: “According to Alex, Rooney was p***ing off the other players by trying to take control.”

Meanwhile, Rooney has hit out at the EFL’s decision to play a Good Friday programme less than 48 hours after internationals.
The Derby boss says it would have been ‘sensible’ to play the games on Saturday as the Premier League have done.
Rooney had two internationals involved in squads last night, Poland’s Kamil Jozwiak and Scotland keeper David Marshall.
Ex-England striker Roo said: “My only issue is the scheduling of the Friday games after Wednesday’s internationals.
“It’s interesting that none of the Premier League teams are playing on Good Friday.
“We have a duty of care to our players.
“It leaves us in a really difficult position when it comes to playing anyone who was also involved with their countries on Wednesday.
“It would be unfair to play them. Playing on Saturday would’ve been the sensible thing to do but that’s not the case.”

Tech giants risk tarnishing golden decade of football by not tackling online racism, Culture Secretary warns

TECH giants risk tarnishing a golden decade of football by not doing enough to tackle online racism, the Culture Secretary says today. After we told of Thierry Henry’s web hell, Oliver Dowden said the Arsenal legend’s evidence was “too toxic to be ignored”.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has warned that tech giants risk tarnishing a ‘golden decade’ of football by not tackling online racismCredit: The Mega Agency
Facebook, Google and Twitter face fines of billions unless they take action now — with Whitehall drawing up laws that could take ten per cent of their global revenue unless they do more.
Mr Dowden said he held “shocking” chats with players, including Sun columnist Troy Deeney, and it was clear that abuse has migrated from “the stands to social media”.
He said inaction could cast a shadow over the decade of football ahead in which the UK hosts Euro matches this summer and the Women’s Euros come here next year, and we bid for the 2030 World Cup.
He added the time had come for firms to “deploy their brilliant engineers” to strip the sites of hate.
His call in The Sun comes after a government race relations report sparked a row by concluding that the country is a “beacon” to the world.
Dr Tony Sewell wrote in his report: “We no longer see a Britain where the system is deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities.”

The Sun recently told of Thierry Henry’s web hell

The report did say that social media firms don’t do enough to tackle racism.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer called its findings disappointing.
And race campaigners rejected the dossier, saying it failed to take into account the “lived experience” of many Brits.
Let’s see action to tackle itBy Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden
Sadly, racism in football seems to have moved from the stands to social media.
I recently spoke to a group of footballers, including Sun columnist Troy Deeney, to hear directly about the abuse they face and what they’d like their Government to do about it.
They were very open, and it was shocking to hear about the racist abuse they deal with on a daily basis.
As Thierry Henry said, this situation is too toxic to ignore – and I’m determined to tackle it.
After a terrible couple of seasons due to Covid, we should be looking forward to a golden decade of football.
The enthusiasm of the post-lockdown kickoff on Monday shows the strength of the grassroots. The women’s game is flourishing.
We are building better all-weather facilities in every corner of the country.
We will be proud hosts of the Euros this summer and the Women’s Euros next, and we are starting exploratory work on our bid for the World Cup in 2030.
So let’s not allow online abuse to tarnish our game.
Let’s not force footballers to choose between either engaging with their fans and having to see racist comments all hours of the day, or come off social media altogether.
We’ve been working on new laws to make the online world safer. It’s complex, and we have to get it right, and ensure freedom of expression.
But I firmly believe we can have a free and open internet without hateful, racist comments going unchecked.
Companies have a clear picture of what our laws will do.
They can deploy their brilliant engineers right now to stop racist remarks being posted and shared.
I believe them when they say they want their platforms to be positive and safe places. So let’s see the action now.

Team GB sprinter Reece Prescod hopes move to Florida will bring Tokyo Olympics glory and break Linford Christie’s record

REECE PRESCOD believes relocating to Florida will revolutionise his career — and fulfil two targets in his athletics career.Britain’s fourth fastest male sprinter flew to the US this month to begin training on the road to the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.
Reece Prescod, 25, hopes training in Florida will help him bring success to Team GB at the OlympicsCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
The ambitious 25-year-old — whose 100 metres personal best is 9.94sec — has made no secret about wanting to win a medal and potentially break Linford Christie’s 1993 national record of 9.87.
Prescod, one of SunSport’s Samurai Seven to watch on the Road to Tokyo, revealed he has parted ways with coach Jonas Dodoo after eight years to link up with veteran Mike Holloway, 62, in the Sunshine State.
He said: “Mike has been around for years and comes with a lot of expertise.
“He has coached guys to run sub-44, sub-20 and sub-ten for the 400m, 200m and 100m.
“I’ve always said I wanted to do the 100m, 200m and 400m. So he ticks all the boxes.
“In lockdown, I got to a stage where I had time to sit and reflect on everything.
“When I compete against the world’s best, the guys winning the medals and running the times were from the US and Jamaica.
“They tend to be in better condition to  survive the rounds.

“The Americans and Jamaicans always win the majority of the Olympics and World Championships. It’s because of the type of training they’re doing.
“I want a coach to teach me to do that. Even if it takes me a bit longer that’s ultimately what I want to do. I want to win medals.
“I don’t want to get a high world ranking or place high on the Diamond League circuit.
“Fortunately for me, a lot of coaches rated my talent, not just the UK-based ones. I looked at going to Jamaica, maybe Usain Bolt’s old coach, but Jamaican culturally, even though I have family heritage from there, is very different.
“I liked Mike’s principles, which are about making someone a better athlete and a better man at the same time. I’ve been in England for a long time and I know what I want from myself.
“The training group there seems really, really friendly, a lot more upbeat.
“It has come at a good time for me, I’m training good, eating well, sleeping well.
“I’ve learned now that I cannot base all my happiness and everything on athletics performance.
“Before that, if I was running well, I am up here. And if I’m running bad, I’m down there. In times like this, that’s not a healthy way to live.
“In an ideal world I’d live in England, settle down, get a nice house, have a girlfriend, have a nice coach in England, have a nice life.
Prescod is also eager to break Linford Christie’s record for the 100 metre dashCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Prescod is confident his American dream can make his Tokyo gold dream a realityCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“But for what I want, for my performance, I need to go there. That’s what I have to try to get out of America.”
Londoner Prescod, who started following Holloway’s training sessions last year via Zoom, claims he would have been fit for the Tokyo Olympics had they not been postponed by the  pandemic for 12 months.
Nonetheless, injuries have played a huge part in his  journey.
Notably the right hamstring  he tore in Oslo in June 2019, which forced him out of the Doha World Championships later that year.
Prescod spent fortnightly sessions in Germany with Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, who worked on Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt before the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
The 2018 European 100m silver medallist has skipped the indoor season and will concentrate fully on the Team GB trials in Manchester this summer.
Prescod, who benefits from National Lottery funds, admitted: “The mental barriers play in my head because I haven’t run in a long time. I probably don’t know what 100m feels like now!
“I’d really like to break the British record and to get some medals at a championship. That’s my aim for the rest of my track career.
“That’s the level I will aim for. You see how Bolt did it — you’d see him on the Diamond League here and there but, ultimately, he got ready for the Jamaican national trials.
“Then he went to the Games and gave his best running. That’s what I have got to do now.”

Erling Haaland can be Sergio Aguero’s successor at Man City… but big rivals Man Utd ready to ruin that dream

THE iconic 93:20 moment takes pride of place among the huge banners on the side of the Etihad Stadium. But in two months, Sergio Aguero — the man twirling his shirt around his head on that May day nine years ago — will be consigned to the history books.
Erling Haaland would be great for Man City – but they must see off the threat of rivals Man Utd firstCredit: Reuters
And Manchester City will be looking for a new poster boy to try to fill the enormous void left by their record 257-goal scorer.
Step forward Erling Haaland, who tops Pep Guardiola’s shopping list this summer — IF City can make the numbers work.
Whoever steps into the boots of the fourth highest scorer in  Premier League history is going to have to back themselves.
Borussia Dortmund striker  Haaland, 20, certainly does. His old Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — who would also love to bring him to Manchester this summer — can testify to that.
The current United manager recalled his early days working with the teen sensation.
He told Sky Sports: “He came as a 16-year-old and you never know with injuries. He struggled with his knees when he first came.
“But I could see someone with personality. I remember him brushing off and putting our  centre-back and centre midfielder — two big lads — on the floor.
“He asked them to get up. He’s a top personality and he’s proving to everyone what a good player he is. We played against Zenit in the Europa League play-off and the referee came to me afterwards and said, ‘He’ll play in the Champions League soon’.

Haaland would do a fine job replacing outgoing City legend Sergio AgueroCredit: PA

“We did know. I played with his dad Alf, he’s a bit old school in that respect but he’s a winner.”
Although he does not turn 21 until July, Haaland already has the record to back up that swagger.
The Norwegian’s appetite for goals would almost make the master marksman Aguero blush.
Back in summer 2019, Haaland scored NINE goals playing for his country’s Under-20s in a 12-0 World Cup group stage win over Honduras.
Yet instead of celebrating the achievement, he was kicking himself afterwards for not getting double figures.
He said: “It annoys me a little bit that I didn’t score with my last kick of the game.
“I’ll have to sit down and think a little bit about it and maybe I’ll work out what happened.”
Due to his height of just over 6ft 3in, you cannot really miss him on the pitch.

But do not be fooled by his stature — he is also one of the fastest players in the German league and does not play like a   typical burly No 9.
Keep an eye on his post-match interviews, too, if he does land in England. Unlike Aguero, Haaland seems to relish a bit of jousting with journalists!
Solskjaer got an early glimpse of the youngster’s character as well as his goalscoring ability when he made his bow in the first team at Molde.
He scored on his debut in the Norwegian Cup and then a couple of months later he made his first league appearance.
He was booked within a minute after coming off the bench but just six minutes later he had bagged the winner. Talk about making an entrance.
After another decisive strike against Viking later that year, he celebrated in front of opposing fans — earning himself a public ticking off from a team-mate.
The goals continued to come and in July 2018, he scored four inside the first 21 minutes of a game against league leaders SK Brann. Solskjaer admitted the youngster was already attracting interest.
Having been born in Leeds while his midfielder dad played for them, Haaland once revealed his dream was to win the Premier League with the Yorkshire side.

But despite some advances from Elland Road, his next move was to Red Bull Salzburg — joining up with them at the end of 2018.
It was during the first half of the 2019-20 season when he really rose to fame, scoring 28 goals in 22 appearances for Salzburg — including five hat-tricks — earning him a January move to Borussia Dortmund.
He also became the first teenager to score in his first four Champions League matches, including one in a thriller against Liverpool at Anfield.
Early in 2020 he shunned  interest from United and Juventus to make the move to Dortmund.
He made his debut on January 18 last year and scored a hat-trick within 23 minutes of coming off the bench in a 5-3 win over Augsburg.
Two more goals in each of his next two matches made it seven in three games — and he won the league’s player of the month award despite only being on the pitch for a couple of hours.
The goals have continued to flow, with 33 in 31 games for Dortmund this term.
Of course City fans will never forget Aguero — how could they? But here is a guy who could at least help them move on.
