Tottenham make Brendan Rodgers top target to replace Jose Mourinho despite Leicester boss’ past comments angering chiefs

TOTTENHAM are plotting a move to make Brendan Rodgers their manager this summer.Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is trying to persuade his fellow execs the Leicester chief is still a suitable candidate.

They are still sore about disparaging comments Rodgers made about the North London club after turning down an approach from them nine years ago.
But he is on the radar in their search for Jose Mourinho’s replacement, who was sensationally axed on Monday.
RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann is also a target, but Bayern Munich are also keen on appointing him.
Tottenham chairman Levy is a long-time admirer of Rodgers, having previously tried to lure him to White Hart Lane during the Northern Irishman’s spell in charge at Swansea in 2012.
Rodgers then went on to manage Liverpool where he angered Spurs by saying he was relieved had snubbed them in favour of the Kop.
He later moved to Celtic – where he won two Scottish domestic trebles – before taking over at Leicester in February 2019.
The Foxes are on course for a top-four finish, having fallen away during the run-in last term, and Rodgers has guided them to their first FA Cup Final for 51 years – against Chelsea at Wembley next month.
But Tottenham, despite the prospect of missing out on Champions League football for a second successive season, are still confident they could attract the former Watford and Reading boss back to the South-East.

Mourinho, who spent 17 months in charge at Spurs, was sacked after a string of poor results and performances saw them crash out of the FA Cup and Europa League and slide down the Premier League table.
Under-23 coach Ryan Mason will be in charge when they take on Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final after being made interim boss for the rest of the season.
Tottenham said they will then appointment a permanent manager in the summer, suggesting their target is already in a job at another club.

Arsenal open to selling Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles but will demand £20m transfer fees for academy stars

ARSENAL want £20million fees for Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Eddie Nketiah as Premier League rivals check them out.Maitland-Niles has been a hit on loan at West Brom, who would love to take him permanently but would struggle to afford it.

The versatile Gunner has emerged as a stand-out in midfield after years of playing other roles and that has alerted other clubs — until they find out the price tag.
Striker Nketiah is stuck on the fringes and may find a new striker coming in ahead of him in the summer.
But his valuation is also sky high and that has made his suitors think twice.
Maitland-Niles, 23, appeared to have made a significant breakthrough last season – making 32 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s men.
These outings included a start in his side’s victorious FA Cup final against Chelsea last August.
An England debut followed, and he looked a decent bet to make Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad after winning his first five caps in the back end of last year.
But things went stale for him in the first half of this season, being handed only five Premier League starts during the Gunners’ first 21 games.
He then moved on loan to West Brom, where he has thrived in a more natural midfield role – so far making ten appearances for the Baggies.

Nketiah, meanwhile, has also found Premier League minutes hard to come by this season.
But following Alexandre Lacazette’s recent injury, the 21-year-old has been handed a chance to shine, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continues his recovery from malaria.
The academy graduate managed a last-gasp equaliser against Fulham last weekend, but was powerless to prevent his side from sinking to a 1-0 home defeat to Everton on Friday night.

Man Utd line up shock transfer for Tom Heaton, 35, should fellow Old Trafford old-boy Sam Johnstone not return in summer

MANCHESTER UNITED will look to old boy Tom Heaton if Sam Johnstone does not fancy a return.Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his Old Trafford transfer team are looking for an experienced cover keeper.
Tom Heaton, 35, could return to Man Utd next season as coverCredit: EPA
And West Brom’s Johnstone, 28 — who was registered with United from 2009 to 2018 —  is their first choice.
He would need to think he had a chance of playing regularly.
But while Johnstone is the clear number one target, United have also been checking out the interest and availability of another former employee who is out of favour just now and may be more keen.
Aston Villa’s Heaton, 35, is in the frame after losing his place to Emi Martinez.
He is the type of solid pro who would fit the bill.
Like Johnstone, Heaton was a youth keeper at Old Trafford and stayed on their books until 2010.
The new stopper would have to be happy as an understudy but with the ability to quickly step into the first team.
Someone seen as a good role model to their younger keepers would also be a plus.

David de Gea and Dean Henderson have competed for the No1 jersey this season at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard began the campaign in favour, having started 24 of United’s first 26 games in the Premier League this season.
But Henderson, 24, has wrestled the gloves of late, and has been selected for the Red Devils’ last six league games.

Man City lining up shock transfer move for veteran ex-Man Utd keeper Ben Foster, 38, as backup to Ederson

MANCHESTER CITY are looking for a new keeper to push Brazilian No 1 Ederson next season.American Zack Steffen may be loaned out for experience after doubts crept in about whether he was ready to come in when top-choice Ederson was missing.
Manchester City are lining up a shock move to sign Watford keeper Ben FosterCredit: Getty
Those questions were raised before Steffen’s error in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, which cost his club a chance of the Quadruple.
The 26-year-old had previously prompted doubts about his consistency and maturity, so the search for another keeper was already up and running.
It is a hard vacancy to fill as most keepers want regular first-team action.
City may go for an experienced option who is happy to wait for his turn.
Watford veteran Ben Foster, 38, fits the bill but may take some persuading to move just to sit on the bench.

Foster has played 22 times for the Hornets this season as they sealed their return to the Premier League on Saturday.
Scott Carson, 35, is the club’s current third-choice stopper but will return to Derby at the end of the campaign.
The net is being spread wide, with an ability to be comfortable with the ball on the ground also a requirement.

Solskjaer insists Glazer family will NOT sell Man Utd after European Super League shame despite fan protests

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER says the Glazers will not walk away from Manchester United after their Super League slapdown.Hundreds of United fans protested outside Old Trafford on Saturday over the American owners’ involvement in the European Super League.

It follows demonstrations at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs over their backers’ attempts  to join the doomed breakaway league.
United fans were so enraged by the ESL proposal that they stormed the club’s training ground at Carrington on Thursday and Solskjaer himself had to keep the peace.
Yet the manager reckons co-chairman Joel and his family are going nowhere — even though every Big Six owner faces a battle to win the fans round again.
Solskjaer said: “I think the owners that signed up for this proposal have a job on their hands, of course they have.
“We’ve had an apology from Joel and that’s important. He’s told us how committed he is to helping us go forward.
“Unity and everyone coming together for one common goal is the best way forward.
“I’ve had an open and good relationship with them and they’ve been very supportive of me.
“We have shown with the players we’ve signed that we’re committed to improving and they are committed to improve.

“It is all about  improving the club, the infrastructure, the facilities and the squad, and I am very confident they will remain committed.”
Joel Glazer, who was vice-chairman of the ESL, issued a letter of apology on Wednesday, admitting the club made a mistake by joining.
Solskjaer insisted he had no problem with the fans voicing their anger — and is equally adamant the Super League KO will not affect his  summer spending.
He added: “I’m still positive and hopeful we can follow through on the plans we’re working on.”

At West Ham we played a factory side for free loafers… ESL shows how much money has changed football

IN my early days at West Ham, there was one game everyone wanted to play in.Obviously we dreamed of playing in the FA Cup final, a title decider, or in front of a packed Upton Park against Manchester United, Spurs or the like.
Harry Redknapp, front row second from left, says West Ham players used to love playing an amateur team from Essex for free shoes and thinks money has changed the modern gameCredit: Mirrorpix
Redknapp reckons money has changed football and claims the European Super League has proven thatCredit: Rex
But the one we looked forward to almost as much was a pre-season match against a side from the Essex Business League.
The Bata Shoes factory team had a beautiful pitch and each year we’d play them in a warm-up game… and get a pair of brown and a pair of black each.
Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, the whole lot, they all wanted to play because we knew we’d get new shoes out of it.
Anyone who was injured would be saying, “Harry, see if you can get me a pair of size nines, slip-ons if you can, mate.”
It was a real big thing, one of our biggest games of the year!
Don’t forget, that the lads who won the World Cup only got £1,000 each – but it was a different world.
It was nothing like now, when some blokes are picking up £100,000 a week and can barely tie their own laces.
Then at Christmas, we’d get a 10lb chicken - not a turkey – off West Ham and we’d be delighted with it.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

Back then, the clubs were owned by local businessmen. When I played, the chairman owned a wood yard 200 yards up the road from the stadium.
It was Reg Pratt, the Cearns family or Terry Brown – West Ham fans who’d grown up supporting the club.
These days, West Ham’s David Sullivan and David Gold, plus Tony Bloom at Brighton, are probably the only ones in that category.
The rest are nearly all foreign businessmen with no real affection for the club, no love for the place - it’s just all about money.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. And if a breakaway meant the chance to make millions from Asian or Far East TV rights, then so what?
They think about their club, their investment, and nothing else. Not the fans, not other clubs, just pound signs.
That’s why, when the 14 who weren’t invited to the proposed Super League were all kicking off, I had a little smile.
If any of them had been asked, I’m sure they’d have jumped at it.
If anyone said, ‘Hang on a minute, Man City are out, we’re looking for someone else,’ they’d have all had their hands up.
So while the ESL may have fallen apart because of the fans, there will always be something, it will always be about the bottom line.

Remember a couple of years ago there was talk of playing one game abroad.
Then it would have been two, then five, then half a season in China, America, all over the place.
It’s all about owners seeing their investment getting bigger. I’ve been there, I’ve seen it. The fans don’t come into the equation for them.
So while people are saying they want to get rid of John Henry, the Glazers or whoever, the days when someone like Blackburn’s Jack Walker would come in are long gone.
You need to be a billionaire, not a millionaire, to own a club – and the majority of them are foreign.
I heard Jamie Carragher speaking so passionately, saying Henry shouldn’t be allowed back at Liverpool, but even if someone else bought it, it’d be as a business not because they care.
Look at Bury when they were going under. There are Premier League clubs in the area who could have helped out, it would have cost them next to nothing, but no one came forward.
There is no interest in anyone but themselves. That’s every owner, especially at that level – it’s all about their club and nothing else.
Of course, in the end, they are just the custodians, the club will still be there long after they have gone.
But it will only ever be about the balance sheet and the profits – even if it isn’t going to be coming from a breakaway Super League.

“This is the longest time they have spent together uninterrupted since they got married, and Coleen has fallen in love with Wayne all over again.

Prem legend Henry has been at the forefront of the fight after removing himself from social media last month
From 3pm on Friday, April 30, through to the end of Bank Holiday Monday on May 3, every club will switch off their social media accounts.
Prem legend Henry has been at the forefront of the fight after removing himself from social media last month.
He said: “English football coming off social media is a powerful statement. Everything that tries to destroy the beauty and the happiness of our game — we should  fight it.
“This is my happiest moment. Football stands for something. Not only money.
“What happened with the European Super League was about standing up for values — and so is this.”
Championship sides Swansea and Birmingham were involved in week-long social media boycotts earlier this month.
This is my happiest moment. Football stands for something. Not only money.Thierry Henry
A joint statement read: “The FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Championship, PFA, LMA, PGMOL, Kick It Out and the FSA will unite for a social media boycott in response to the ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse received online by players and many others connected to football.
“The boycott shows English football coming together to emphasise that social media companies must do more to eradicate online hate, while highlighting the importance of educating people in the ongoing fight against discrimination.
“While some progress has been made, we reiterate those requests today in an effort to stem the relentless flow of discriminatory messages and ensure that there are real-life consequences for purveyors of online abuse.
“While football takes a stand, we urge the UK Government to ensure its Online Safety Bill will bring in legislation to make social media companies more accountable.”
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: “The appalling abuse we are seeing players receive on social media platforms cannot be allowed to continue.
“The Premier League and our clubs stand alongside football in staging this boycott to highlight the urgent need for social media companies to do more in eliminating racial hatred.
🗣 “It’s about time. The Super League got cut off in 48 hours… racism is bigger than the Super League.”🗣 “We care about this club. “We will not stop challenging social media companies and want to see significant improvements in their policies and processes to tackle online discriminatory abuse on their platforms.”
Sanjay Bhandari, Kick It Out Chair, added: “Social media is now sadly a regular vessel for toxic abuse.
“This boycott signifies our  anger at the damage this causes to the people who play, watch and work in the game.”
