Uefa plot major revamp of away goals rule in Champions League and Europa League next season as clubs back move

UEFA are set to partially scrap the away goals rule from next season.Under the new regulations poised to be agreed on Friday, away goals will only count extra up to the end of 90 minutes in the second leg.

Any then scored in extra-time would have no advantage.
The proposal, understood to be backed by Europe’s top clubs, will be on the table at the meeting of Uefa’s competitions committee, which includes Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Manchester City chief exec Ferran Soriano.
A plan to scrap the away goals rules altogether has been rejected.
Uefa are ready to green light the change next term after a season of Covid-hit competitions increased scrutiny of the rule, which was introduced for the 1965-66 campaign.
The number of games played on neutral pitches, including both legs on occasions for ties involving Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and City, has raised concerns the rule is no longer fit for purpose.
Meanwhile, Uefa are pushing ahead with their plans to extend the Champions League from 125 matches per season to 225.
Uefa’s plan will see the 36 teams in one league but playing ten matches in the opening phase.

The so-called “Swiss system” will mean teams play seeded opponents to ensure a fair calculator.
The top eight sides after ten matches will automatically reach the last 16, with the final eight places decide by home and away play-off games involving the sides finishing ninth to 24th.
That concept for the post-2024 shape of the European game is expected to be confirmed by the end of this month.

Furious Rodgers texted them to call it a night. But they hid in the dark then half the guests got taxis to Choudhury’s house, 30 miles away in Nottingham, at 1am to continue partying.
And on Sunday, three of the quartet were left out of the 3-2 defeat at West Ham. Barnes is injured.
A source said: “Everyone was having a good time then suddenly the players said to each other ‘Look at your phone’.
“They’d got a message from Brendan. He told them he knew what they were up to and to stop the party immediately.
“They told everyone to hide and switched off all the lights so it looked like no one was home.”
Cops had gone to Perez’s £1.3million home near the Foxes’ King Power Stadium, just after 12.20am last Sunday, six hours after a 2-0 defeat to Man City.

Neighbours said sports cars lined the street from 9pm and music was coming from Perez’s.
Guests were made to put their phones in sealed pouches so no pictures or video could be taken.
Why do they feel like they can do what they want just because they’re rich footballers?
The source said: “Most guests were young women. They were all drinking and having a laugh then carried on at Hamza’s.”
A neighbour said: “I could see coloured lights at Ayoze’s house. He’d also closed his blinds. He doesn’t usually do that.”
Police found the house in darkness so took no action.
The neighbour said they heard groups getting into taxis, which made a dog bark, waking another local.

They added: “We are City fans but this is just not acceptable. Why do they feel like they can do what they want just because they’re rich footballers?”
The players were hauled in at 6pm on Tuesday.
Leicester said: “Those involved have apologised for their poor judgment. Our response to the matter will be concluded internally.”

The most recent Covid breach by Premier League players comes just one month after Brighton’s Aaron Connolly was caught on video breaching regulations.
And among the England internationals who have broken coronavirus rules, Aston Villa duo Jack Grealish and Ross Barkley were caught partying in London back in December.

Tyson Fury ‘100 per cent sure’ Anthony Joshua blockbuster will be announced TODAY… but will walk away if it isn’t

TYSON FURY is ‘one million per cent’ sure his summer superfight with Anthony Joshua will be officially announced today. But in a trademark twist, Fury warned he will WALK AWAY if it is not.
Tyson Fury threatened to walk away from AJ if a venue isn’t agreed by TuesdayCredit: PA
The undefeated WBC heavyweight champion declared: “I have been told there are a few good offers on the table, from a few different countries, from some very rich people, so I am confident.
“Saudi is involved, I will say that much, but there are also some dark horses involved who have offered some serious money.
“I am one million per cent sure it will happen and we’ll know where and when.
“We both want it and we will give each other a good hiding and lay it all on the line.
“It is exciting for me because I have always been quite sceptical about it all.”
However, in his interview with YouTube channel Behind the Gloves, he added: “If I don’t know anything by Tuesday I will just move on because it has been a long time in the making.”
Team AJ believe they have hustled Fury, 32, into the biggest fight in British boxing history begrudgingly.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has tirelessly talked up the clash and scouted for venues while 31-year-old Joshua has been busier on social media than ever before.
Anthony Joshua has confirmed a deal is all-but doneCredit: PA
AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn has touted plenty of venues that could host the fightCredit: PA
The Gypsy King’s army has done the opposite, with promoters Frank Warren and Bob Arum going radio silent and the WBC champ’s father John repeatedly claiming the fight was miles off announcing.
Fury has two big-money fights left on his contract with US promoters Top Rank and American broadcasters ESPN – where he could have collected around £25million for fighting a couple of cherry-picked opponents.
But the very-public work and promotion AJ and Hearn have launched has helped lure the giant into the showdown.
After AJ posted yet another social media update about a guaranteed venue making a concrete offer, a source close to the talks told SunSport: “It is a massively positive bit of news on the event now happening.
“This fight would never have been made without the work Eddie has put in.
“If Fury had not taken the fight, after all the work put in – and media attention drummed up – it would have looked pretty embarrassing.”
In fairness to hall-of-fame promoter Warren, who guided Fury’s return to the support after a doping ban and mental health breakdown, he has insisted his uncharacteristic silence has been protocol after the two rival teams signed a non-disclosure agreement while negotiations went on.
But Joshua’s unusually candid social media posts definitely seemed to have barged plans along rapidly, just weeks after Fury talked about taking on an alternative opponent.

On Sunday night, AJ wrote: “Positive news this evening! I’m lacing up my running boots rn!
“@258MGT and @Matchroomboxing have received the first OFFICIAL offer to host the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship Of The WORLD!
“I will be victorious God Willing! No place to hide now! I’M COMING!”
If both fighters agree to take the red-hot rivalry to the Middle East, they could face temperatures of up to 110 degrees.
The bout will have to happen inside and any Brits travelling to catch the action will struggle to spend a second outside.
But the biggest site fee was always likely to come from the petro-dollar kingdom and the region being around two hours ahead will be a huge boost to the potential pay-per-view sales that Hearn believes could be a record-demolishing 2.2million.
AJ took his 2019 rematch win over Andy Ruiz to the Diriyah on just a few weeks notice and seemed to strike up a close relationship with the royals there who stumped up the funds.
But Fury is no stranger to Saudi lucre after he wrestled for the WWE in Riyadh in October that same year.

Harry Kane will decide his transfer future even if Tottenham chief Daniel Levy insists he won’t sell, says Glenn Hoddle

GLENN HODDLE would not blame Harry Kane if he quits Tottenham — just like he did.Despite chairman Daniel Levy insisting their star striker will not be sold, an offer of £150million would be extremely hard to resist.

The Spurs legend knows all about quitting the club after his 1987 departure for MonacoCredit: Getty
Legend Hoddle left Spurs for Monaco in 1987.
Speaking on his latest podcast, he said: “I don’t think anyone would blame Harry if he moved now, if he said he wanted to win silverware elsewhere and the right offer was there.
“I think he is the one who will make that decision and Spurs will have to get the best deal they can. But it would be a crushing blow.
“Losing a quality player like Kane would be a setback to any club.
“I do not know whether it is in Tottenham’s hands.
“I think it is Harry Kane’s decision at the end of the day, to put his foot down and say he wants to go somewhere else and win trophies.
“There are only a few clubs able to afford him, that’s his problem. There could be a little game of chess.
“If Erling Haaland goes to Manchester City that blocks that, if Kylian Mbappe goes to Real Madrid, maybe there is an opening at Paris Saint-Germain.

What every Tottenham player earns following Mourinho’s pay rant

“I would not like to see him go to PSG to be honest. I’d prefer him to stay — but I would not blame him if he did look elsewhere.
“In an ideal world, I know Harry loves Tottenham and wants to stay to win trophies.
“If they win the Carabao Cup, does he see that as a key moment in the club’s modern history and say, ‘This is a stepping stone to go and get some success’.”
The lack of Champions League football and no fans has put huge pressure on the club’s finances.
The future of manager Jose Mourinho may also hang on the Wembley final against City on Sunday week.
Hoddle added: “That game is a crossroads. OK, it does not get them into the Champions League, but they get some silverware and that would give everyone a lift and be a stepping stone for Jose to go on from there.
“For many different reasons, maybe for Harry staying, for them to build on something.
“They have got world-class players at the top of the pitch — but it needs a rebuild now.”

Jose Mourinho launches scathing attack on Solskjaer as pair clash in tunnel over Man Utd boss’ Son Heung-min comments

JOSE MOURINHO launched a scathing attack on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the pair clashed in the tunnel after the final whistle. The Tottenham chief was furious after Solskjaer accused Son Heung-min of conning officials to get Edinson Cavani’s strike chalked off by going down too easily under a flailing arm from Scott McTominay.

Solskjaer was first left seething after Son’s reaction to McTominay’s flailing arm in the build-up to Cavani’s disallowed goalCredit: Sky Sports

Seething Solskjaer said: “If my son stayed down for three minutes and he needed ten mates to help him up, he wouldn’t get any food.
“The game has gone — absolutely gone.”
But former United boss Mourinho hit back as the row escalated when he told reporters: “I just want to say Sonny’s very lucky that his father is a better person than Ole.”
Cavani thought he had given United the lead when he slotted home in the 33rd minute.
But referee Chris Kavanagh ruled it out after VAR advised him to check the pitchside monitor.
It looked a harsh decision and the Red Devils were further incensed when the South Korean fired Spurs ahead seven minutes later.
Old Trafford manager Solskjaer — despite his side’s sterling second-half comeback — was still angry about the incident afterwards.
The Norwegian said in a television interview moments after the final whistle: “It was a perfectly good goal. We weren’t conned, the referee was.”

EDINSON CAVANI should not have had a first-half goal disallowed at Tottenham.
I felt Scott McTominay did not commit a foul on Son Heung-Min in the build-up to Cavani’s strike.
It was a slight hand-off by the Manchester United midfielder, the sort you see in every football match and nowhere near enough contact to force the Spurs forward to go down in the manner he did.
The incident wasn’t a clear and obvious error by referee Chris Kavanagh and a subjective decision to allow play to continue.
It was fine for VAR to check Cavani’s resulting goal but official Craig Pawson at Stockley Park should not have recommended a review.
VAR have re-refereed the incident because as soon as Kavanagh went to the monitor he was under huge pressure to overturn his original decision.
Kavanagh should have mentally tough enough to stick with his initial call as he was in an excellent position.
The PGMOL explanation of this incident was nonsense and showed a major lack of understanding of football.
Contact in football is not always a foul.
If the officials deemed McTominay was a foul then why wasn’t Paul Pogba punished for a worse action on Serge Aurier earlier in the half?
This is where the inconsistency drives everyone in the game mad and it is no surprise both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said afterwards they don’t understand the decision making anymore.

The comments riled Mourinho and he slammed reporters on his post-match video conference for not asking him about them, even though they had not seen the broadcast.
He said: “I am very, very surprised that after the comments Ole made on Sonny you don’t ask me about it.
“Because, and I’ve told Ole already this when I met him just a few minutes ago, if it is me telling Player A, B or C from another club that ‘If he was my son I wouldn’t be giving him dinner tonight’ or something like that, what would be the reaction?
“It’s really sad nobody asks me about it. It’s really sad nobody has the moral honesty to treat me the way you treat others.
“In relation to that, I just want to say Sonny is very lucky that his father is a better person than Ole.
“Because I think a father — and I am a father — you have always to feed your kids no matter what they do. If you have to steal to feed your kids, you steal.
“I am very disappointed because with me, like we say in Portugal, bread is bread and cheese is cheese.
“I’ve told Ole already what I think of his comments.
“And I have to tell you that I am very disappointed that in seven questions you ignore these comments.”
Man Utd ultimately stormed to a 3-1 win with Greenwood grabbing the thirdCredit: AP
Both managers traded jibes in the build-up to the game but the post-match comments took their feud to another level.
But even Mourinho seemed to think the decision to disallow Cavani’s goal was harsh as he admitted: “I don’t know anything any more.
“I watched Fulham versus Wolves. I don’t understand anything any more.
“Sometimes you get decisions, sometimes you don’t get. I don’t know how to comment. You don’t celebrate a goal because you are afraid.”
When asked whether his side got away with that VAR call, Mourinho snapped: “We were unlucky because maybe Paul Pogba should have got a red card for an elbow on Serge Aurier.”
Sheepish Son, 28, who let out a yelp and collapsed after McTominay’s fingers brushed his face, said: “It’s difficult for everybody. For us, for the players, for the referees.
“There are lots of contradictions and decisions you don’t understand very well. That’s not my problem, I cannot fix this.”
Cavani had earlier seen a strike ruled out due to McTomainy’s swipe but later got on the scoresheetCredit: Kevin Quigley-The Daily Mail
But Solskjaer admitted the injustice inspired United’s comeback thanks to goals from Fred, Cavani and Mason Greenwood.
He added: “From that moment we played some very good football and obviously conceded a goal after that.
“But the players came together and were not going to let a decision like that derail their season.
“That showed the strength and character in the team.
“We come together in difficult moments and we’ve done that many times this season.”

Rodgers feels ‘let down’ by four Leicester Covidiots after breaching lockdown measures to party ahead of West Ham defeat

BRENDAN RODGERS says he feels let down by four Leicester stars who broke Covid rules.James Maddison, Ayoze Perez and Hamza Choudhury flouted restrictions by going to a party last Saturday, along with injured Harvey Barnes.
James Maddison was one of four Leicester players to break lockdown rulesCredit: Reuters
Boss Rodgers punished the first three by leaving them out of yesterday’s 3-2 defeat at West Ham. The loss left the gap to fifth-placed Chelsea at two points, threatening their Champions League bid.
Rodgers said: “From a personal perspective, I was bitterly disappointed, I’ve got to say. It was a breach. My objective coming into Leicester City was to create a standard on and off the pitch.
“Particularly at this time when we’re challenging and fighting to finish off a really exciting season — that standard and the values we have as a club, they fell well below that.
“The guys who weren’t involved in the squad at West Ham would have been. However, as a consequence of their behaviour, they weren’t.
“It’s a mistake they’ve made. I won’t hold it against them. It’s not what their identity is as young guys.
“They’ve made a mistake and been punished for it. It’s in the past now.
“It wasn’t ideal (timing). But that’s how strongly I felt on it.
“We were coming into a game that was a very important game for us. But some things are bigger than football.

“You have to respect what the nation is going through. And we have to respect what our values are within our club.”
Rodgers confirmed the players were not fined because being omitted from the matchday squad was deemed to be punishment enough.
The trio are expected to come back into the fold for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Southampton.
Leicester missed Maddison’s creativity in particularly at the London Stadium, where Jesse Lingard’s double and a Jarrod Bowen strike sent West Ham into the top four.
Kelechi Iheanacho struck twice late on for the Foxes but it was not enough for Rodgers’ men.

The former Celtic chief added: “We were nowhere near the level for the first 55-60 minutes. We were too passive and not aggressive when we didn’t have the ball. We made it too easy for West Ham.
“We were 3-0 down and then it’s easy to play. We nearly nicked something from the game but overall we didn’t deserve it.
“We’ll get back on track again. We’ve got a really exciting week ahead of us.”

It will likely open with a minute’s silence and black armbands for the players.
The Government has told The FA the decision is up to them — but the 5.30pm kick-off may change if it clashes with Prince Philip’s service.
The Football League has already told its clubs that 3pm games may be moved “to avoid a clash”.
An EFL spokesperson said: “As a mark of respect, EFL matches scheduled for 3pm on Saturday 17 April will be moved to avoid a clash with the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“The EFL will now work with its clubs to determine at what time the matches will be played, giving consideration to the timing of the service.

“An announcement will follow in due course.”
A Government spokesman said: “The decision as to whether sporting fixtures continue is at the discretion of organisers.
“They may wish to consider using black armbands and observing a silence before matches.”
