German fans fuming after they’re barred from Euro 2020 clash with England due to Covid rules

WHINING German fans threw a strop yesterday after learning they’ll be barred from the Euro 2020 clash with England due to Covid rules. But there was zero sympathy from Three Lions supporters as it came just 24 hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to ban Brits from holiday sunbeds throughout Europe.

To make it to Tuesday’s Wembley showdown, fans of our old foes would have had to fly out of Germany yesterday to stand any chance of completing a five-day UK quarantine period.
They would also have the headache of sourcing hard-to-find tickets for the reduced capacity 45,000-seat game.
And they would then have to take even more time off work to quarantine for two weeks when they got home thanks to their nation’s draconian Covid crackdown on arrivals from the UK.
Earlier this week, Chancellor Merkel urged EU nations to make all arrivals from the UK quarantine — regardless of whether they are double-jabbed — to halt the spread of the Delta variant.

But England fan Graham Hartill, 50, from Dudley, West Mids, blasted: “They’re always first to the sunbeds on holiday and now they’re furious they can’t get first dibs on a seat at Wembley.
“They should stick to the rules and stay home like the vast majority of England fans are having to do.”
Newspaper Bild led the German moaning yesterday as it told their fans they would have to watch at home. Its report read: “Imagine Germany playing at Wembley Stadium — but no German fan is there live.
“Exactly this scenario threatens us on Tuesday. As of now, the national team has to forgo German support from the ranks.
Bukayo Saka and Kalvin Phillips are hoping to start for England in the huge match against GermanyCredit: Getty
“The current entry regulations make a trip to London almost impossible.”
As well as having to leave by yesterday, the German fans would have to get a negative Covid test tomorrow and another an hour before Tuesday’s 5pm kick-off.
Car mechanic Michael Mueller, 23, from Munich, who had planned to travel with baker pal Juergen Litz, 25, said: “It’s heartbreaking — neither of us can get that amount of time off.
“The Brits want us to quarantine too. No way can we get that kind of dispensation from work for a single game — so it’s the TV for us.”
Anton Schumacher, 30, from Cham in Bavaria, said: “The only Germans at Wembley will be those who live in the UK. I would have loved to have gone but Covid has stuffed us.”
Dirk Hoffman, 40, a trucker from Berlin, added: “Corona has come down on the side of the English. Our boys would have loved to see and hear us there, but it is what it is. Still, I think we’re going to win.”
There was zero sympathy from Three Lions supporters as it came just 24 hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to ban Brits from holiday sunbeds throughout EuropeCredit: AP
But England fans were unconcerned by their rivals’ griping.
James Ceppi di Lecco, 37, of Blackheath, South East London, said last night: “It laughable that the Germans are moaning about getting to the game when they’re trying to stop us going on holiday.
“How can they complain when they can do just five days’ quarantine in our country and we have to do 14 in theirs when most Brits are now double-jabbed?”
Tony Stevens, 26, of Bermondsey, South London, told The Sun: “After the way they’ve behaved with trying to stop us from travelling abroad this summer, it does make you laugh.
“We’ll win on Tuesday and carry the boys over the lines.”
Also untroubled by the German fans’ woes, England’s Euro 2020 stars resumed training yesterday after being given a day off by boss Gareth Southgate following their 1-0 win over the Czech Republic.

But Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka, 19, still found time for a chat about his man-of-the-match heroics — chilling on a bean bag at their St George’s Park training camp in Burton, Staffs.
Flying winger Saka told online sports host Josh Denzel his phone was jammed with messages of congratulation after his brilliant Euros debut.
He said: “My phone was booming — I didn’t know where to start with replying. It was amazing — one of the best moments of my career and my life to step on to the Wembley pitch.”

Emile Heskey admits England’s 5-1 thrashing of Germany still fills him with joy… even if fans’ song isn’t the kindest

DO NOT be surprised to hear Emile Heskey’s name being sung at Wembley on Tuesday night. The Three Lions cult hero managed just seven goals in his 62 caps.

It was a memorable night for the travelling England fans in MunichCredit: PA
But he entered England folklore when he made it 5-1 against Germany 20 years ago.
His old mucker Michael Owen had already scored a hat-trick, while Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard also blasted a banger.
But it is the memory of Heskey racing on to Paul Scholes’ pass and finding the corner, before celebrating with a DJ record-spin and a golf putt, that best summed up that mad mauling in Munich.
Supporters have chanted ‘Five one and even Heskey scored’ to the tune of the Village People’s Go West ever since and will no doubt power it out ahead of the last-16 clash with the Germans.
Heskey, 43, said: “Wherever I go in the world, I always bump into an England fan who will say they know exactly where they were when that game was being played.
“That just fills you with joy because it’s a memory that everyone cherishes and I was a part of for a whole nation.
“I did that 20 years ago and 20 years on they’re still chanting my name. It’s not a bad thing!”
That goal in 2001 immortalised Heskey in England’s footballing history.

A DVD was even made of the game, which the former Leicester and Liverpool striker has a copy of — although he claims he never watches it.
Gareth Southgate’s squad have a great opportunity to make themselves legends at these Euros, with their side of the draw about as kind as it gets.
First, they will have to beat Germany, who, despite some patchy recent form and an unconvincing group display, Heskey still feels will be a tough nut to crack.
He said: “With a German team of old, you know exactly what you’re getting — powerful engines.
“You think of German technology and that’s the team — something that goes and goes, never stops, works and looks good.
“Now they’ve got a new generation that are finding their own feet. They’re in transition.
“But it’s still a German side. I don’t think they’re ever going to lie down and say, ‘We’re not as good as England’.
“England should take the best things from themselves, know they can go out there and beat this Germany side with their tactical know-how, the management and the players showing on the pitch that they can perform under pressure and that they are the better players.”

Heskey would favour England switching to a back three of Harry Maguire, John Stones and Tyrone Mings against Germany, with Luke Shaw and either Reece James or Kieran Trippier as the wing-backs for their delivery.
He feels Southgate will stick with two-goal Raheem Sterling as well as his two holding midfielders.
It means that if they do revert to three centre-backs, it is likely to be a shootout between Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka for that last spot behind Harry Kane.
Heskey added: “Jack set up the goal against the Czech Republic and was fantastic.
“But Saka has given them a dilemma. He showed a fearlessness, he took people on and that’s what we’ve been begging for.”
Whatever Southgate goes for, Heskey agrees that Tuesday’s encounter is a landmark moment in the England manager’s reign.
Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick for the Three LionsCredit: PA
No one expected the Three Lions to make the World Cup semi-finals three years ago but now many are pointing out how favourable the draw was in that tournament.
England have hardly set the Euros alight but have done what was required.
Beat a big-hitter like Germany, though, and people will begin to believe.
Heskey, who played with Southgate for England, added: “It’s a huge game for his legacy. Get through this to the quarters and the semis.
“That’s massive for Gareth because you’re not saying he’s taken an easy route — he’s beaten Germany.”
Heskey knows just what that feels like.

Euro 2020: If England don’t play Jadon Sancho, Germany should try to get him a passport, says Lothar Matthaus

LOTHAR MATTHAUS is baffled by Jadon Sancho’s lack of England action – and wishes he could get a German passport! Borussia Dortmund star Sancho, 21, has played just SIX MINUTES at the Euros.

And ahead of Tuesday’s huge last-16 clash with old foes Germany, World Cup-winning legend Matthaus said: “He was one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years.
“If he is not good enough for England, we would like to give him a German passport.
“It has surprised many in Germany.”
Matthaus warns England have to beat Germany inside 120 minutes or prepare for more penalty shootout heartbreak.
The two sides face each other in a major tournament for the eighth time on Tuesday.
Victories for the Three Lions have been few and far between – the World Cup final in 1966 and a 1-0 win in the 2000 Euros group stage stand alone.
And England have never beaten Germany in a shootout – including scarring defeats at Italia 90 and Euro 96, when current boss Gareth Southgate missed.

Matthaus said: “England have a chance to win – but not with penalty kicks.
“If it goes to penalties, Germany will win, so England have to do it inside 120 minutes.
“We are always very good with penalties. It’s always a little bit of a joke between the Germans and the English but if it goes to a shootout then we are the favourites. You start to think about what has happened in the last 30 or 40 years. When we played in 1990 and 1996…
“It’s a lot of pressure for the English players because they read every day in the newspapers all the stories about penalties.”
Matthaus was involved in the shootout with England at the 1990 World Cup, scoring Germany’s second before Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed theirs.
Matthaus added: “In 1990, we knew we could win the World Cup and we were ready to win it.
“This confidence was growing in the tournament and we showed it.
“The best game was against England in the semis. England had a fantastic team and they were getting better and better throughout the tournament – it was a strong fight between England and Germany to go the final.”

    England’s sorry record against Germany

Another tough battle is expected on Tuesday as Southgate welcomes Joachim Low’s underperforming side to Wembley.
Home advantage could prove crucial yet Matthaus believes the Germans will love playing at England’s “magical” national stadium.
He added: “Nobody wanted this game so early. Maybe we would have accepted England versus Germany in the final. It could have been another final like 1966!
“England don’t like to play against Germany but Germany also don’t like to play against England.
“But the players have to be happy to have a big game in Wembley. It doesn’t get any better.
“Wembley is something magical still and in the last 20 or 30 years we had very good experiences – we won Euro 96 there, Didier Hamann scored the last goal in the old Wembley. We like Wembley.”
Stuttgart-born Jamal Musiala, who represented England from Under-15s to Under-21s has switched allegiance to Germany.

He became the youngest German player to feature at a major tournament, at 18 years and 177 days, after coming off the bench during their 2-2 draw with Hungary.
And Matthaus said: “For me, he has to start against England.”

Matthaus was speaking as research from Official Accommodation and Attractions Booking Partner of UEFA EURO 2020™, Booking.com found that 61% of English supporters would rather see Germany, their main rivals, win the upcoming tournament, than skip their next holiday.

Marcus Rashford could miss the start of Man Utd’s season as he needs shoulder surgery
Rashford will first give his all for England at the Euros before his operation
And asked whether he needed an operation, Man Utd ace Rashford, 23, said: “I have to decide after – it’s either an operation or I don’t get an operation on my shoulder.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure if I need it yet. I’ll finish strongly here and like I said I’ve got a few weeks off to just relax and decide what I’m going to do.
“The doctors have not said how long I’d be out for.
“The reason I don’t know is that when the season was going, and before I came here (with England), I knew there was no chance I was going to be getting the operation so I did not know how long the operation would put me out for.
“I am fully concentrated on here (England). When the tournament is finished then I will ask the question.
“But to get to this stage where I am now, it was a massive aim of mine back at the beginning of the season. I’m prepared mentally and physically for games.”
And Rashford admits he has been unable to produce his best form in recent months.
He said: “Obviously I am not performing at my best, and what I know I can perform to.

“Whatever that is down to, it doesn’t really matter because it has been going on since early on in the season.
“I managed to get through the season with United. I think I had 36 goal involvements so I can’t look back at the year and say ‘mmm, I should have taken time off to do this and do that.’
“I just want to be available for every game.”

Villa have remained insistent they do not want to sell the 25-year-old, who  has four years left to run on the current deal with his boyhood club.
But SunSport understands talks with Grealish’s agents Stellar over the past few weeks have left his team happy they now have an agreement which would allow the playmaker to quit once the Euros are over.
City have indicated they would be willing to break the current British transfer record, which sits at the £89m Manchester United paid Juventus for Paul Pogba.

And with Grealish wanting to step up to Champions League football, Villa understand they cannot stand in his way.
City have delayed any official offer while the player is on Euros duty.
But they are expected to make their move in July so Grealish can begin pre-season training with them.
Villa, meanwhile, have already snapped up Ashley Young on a free transfer and splashed out £33m on Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia.

England set up Germany Euro 2020 showdown and it’s time to end years of tears since 1966 cheers

SINCE a certain match in 1966, England have faced the Germans four times in the knockout stages of a major tournament — and been defeated every time.So while this may not be a vintage German team, and while England are eight places higher than their old foes in the Fifa rankings, there was a sense of national dread when Joachim Low’s men were confirmed as England’s last-16 opponents.

If England play the match, rather than the occasion of a great historic rivalry, those rankings suggest Gareth Southgate’s men should win.
But England played the occasion rather than the match in their God-awful goalless draw against Scotland last Friday, so they must learn from that experience.
Because, as it is Germany, we are gripped by a fear of history repeating itself.
As defending world champions in Mexico in 1970, England tossed away a 2-0 lead to lose to West Germany in the quarter-finals — Gordon Banks suffering food poisoning and Peter Bonetti having a stinker in goal.
Then, those two penalty shootout defeats which abruptly halted the oh-so-nearly golden summers of Italia 90 and Euro 96.
England had played very well in both 1-1 draws, only for Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle and Southgate to be cast as the fall guys, Germany scoring ten spot-kicks out of ten past Peter Shilton and David Seaman.
Most recently, Fabio Capello’s England were hammered 4-1 by Low’s Germany in Bloemfontein at the 2010 World Cup — at the same last-16 stage as next Tuesday’s Wembley meeting.
You may recall the Frank Lampard ‘ghost goal’ which crashed against the underside of the bar and fell way over the line, only to be missed by a myopic Uruguayan linesman.

That would have made it 2-2 just before half-time.
Yet England were played off the park for the vast majority of that match — a young Mesut Ozil instrumental in a performance that exposed the rigid stodginess of England’s 4-4-2 formation.
There has been one English win at a tournament since 1966 — a 1-0 group-stage victory at Euro 2000, where both teams were eliminated before the knockout stages.
Although, later that year, the Germans won the final international match at the old Wembley in a World Cup qualifier, forcing manager Kevin Keegan to quit in the toilets.

The Germans rebooted their entire national football strategy after 2000.
While the English appointed Sven-Goran Eriksson and headed down the Posh and Becks WAGs circus approach instead.
During Eriksson’s honeymoon period in 2001, the Swede presided over England’s second-greatest victory over the Germans — an astonishing World Cup qualifying victory in Munich — ‘Five-one, even Heskey scored!’
And yet Germany reached the final of that World Cup, while England went home at the quarter-final stage, as they always did under Eriksson.
⚽ Read our Football live blog for the very latest news from around the grounds
There have been two more English wins on German soil this century — most memorably a comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in Berlin under Roy Hodgson in the build-up to Euro 2016. But we all know how that tournament ended for the Three Lions.
Still, this time could be different. England have conceded just one goal in nine games and the Germans went into this tournament in some disarray.
Low announced the Euros would be the end of his 15-year reign and the team is certainly in transition.
Germany were beaten at home by North Macedonia in a World Cup qualifier in March and had been handed a 6-0 gubbing by Spain in the Nations League last autumn.

Yet there is an old adage that the Germans always get their act together at a tournament — often, but not always, true as they were eliminated in the group stages of the last World Cup.
And after a narrow 1-0 defeat by France in their Euros opener, an impressive 4-2 victory over reigning champions Portugal hinted that there could yet be a glorious last hurrah for Low.
The Germans boast three Chelsea Champions League winners in Kai Havertz, who scored the winner against Manchester City in Porto, Timo Werner and that teak-tough defender, Antonio Rudiger.
Old hands such as Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos and the restored Thomas Muller — all veterans of the 2014 World Cup triumph — will give them the edge over England in terms of big-match experience.
But, for once, England will not head into this grudge match as underdogs.
They will have home advantage, a higher ranking, a meaner defence and the most potent striker on the pitch in Harry Kane.

The Germans certainly have recent footballing history on their side.
But next Tuesday teatime, as a nation skives off work early, Southgate’s men need to swallow the words of Henry Ford — ‘history is more or less bunk’.

The teenager partied through the match at the 4TheFans Manchester Fan Park on Tuesday night (22/6).
Now the Level 7 children’s referee believes the Three Lions can go all the way after their rousing 1-0 win at Wembley.
Jess, of central Manchester, said: “I think we can go do it this time. The talent we have in this team is world class and we can beat anyone on their day.
“The first two games really didn’t look promising but the last one Southgate changed the team up and it has totally transformed them. He made good use of the subs and with Maguire and Grealish everything looks really promising.
“I think we’ll probably face Portugal next, which is intimidating, but to be the best you’ve got to beat the best.”
West Brom fan Jess, originally from Alsager, Cheshire, has played footballer since she was a kid and got her reffing qualifications two years ago. She is an official for academy games and has looked after big matches for Stoke City and Crewe under-14s.

Jess, now studying to become an engineer in Manchester, said: “My dad’s big into football but never played, and my younger brother plays but none of my girl mates do.
“I just love it. Sam Johnstone is my favourite player for the baggies and I like John Stones for England – I think he’s been very unlucky not to score and has put in some really good shifts.
