Manchester City ace Kevin De Bruyne says he doesn’t even remember Chelsea winning Champions League

KEVIN DE BRUYNE has warned old club Chelsea that he is hungry for more silverware – after admitting he does not remember their night of glory nine years ago.The Belgian won his ninth major trophy in six glittering years when Manchester City picked up the Premier League on Sunday.
Kevin de Bruyne is desperate to add the Champions League to his impressive trophy cabinetCredit: Getty
But he is looking to make it double figures when he goes up against his former employers in Porto tomorrow night.
KdB was a Blues player when they won the Champions League in 2012 – but is not even sure he watched the final after he was not invited to Munich.
He said: “We’ve been winning so many trophies over the last six years, been competing in every competition and that’s what I like.
“I want to win again – I can’t wait for the next one to come round so we can try to win again.”
Thomas Tuchel masterminded two victories over City in the final few weeks of the season.
But Pep Guardiola had made wholesale changes to his side for both matches – and KdB does not believe it will have much bearing on the game.
He added: “I just think it’s a different situation. We changed a lot for both of the previous ones but the manager thought we could win both the games with that team.
“In the semi-final we didn’t perform well. But in the league game we could have been two-nil up at half-time. I think it would have been difficult to come back from there.

“It’s a totally different situation playing in the Champions League final where it’s all or nothing.”
The Belgian superstar had signed for the Blues four months before their glory night in Munich – and made his debut for them in a pre-season game for them that July.
Yet he was not invited to the match when club legend Didier Drogba rolled in the winning penalty.
And having spent the previous few months on loan back at Genk, he does not even remember watching his new club’s triumph on television.
De Bruyne shrugged: “I wasn’t there. I don’t think I was invited. I don’t remember much about it to be honest.
“With Champions League finals, sometimes I watch them – sometimes not. It just depends on the situation. I don’t recall too much about that one.”
It is a story typical of his two-and-a-half years on the books at Stamford Bridge.
He made only nine appearances for the London side and spent much of his time there out on loan in Belgium or Germany.

How ironic that his long wait to reach a Champions League final will end tomorrow night – against his former employers.
Asked if that made the game in Porto extra special, KdB said: “Not really.
I’ve not really any bad feelings towards them. It was a part of my life that happened.
“It was a good step for me but I just wanted to play.
“People think about the couple of months that I didn’t play but before then I’d done the pre seasons, I’d been on loan to my old team and to Germany. I grew up a lot as a player.
“Then I came back and I didn’t play a lot so I made a decision and in the end everyone was happy with it. So I don’t think anyone looks back at it as a bad decision.”
While it never worked out for him with Chelsea, he looked a perfect fit for City the minute he walked through the door.
He has lived through six years of frustration in this competition – reaching the semi-final and three quarters before finally making the big one.

He is not sure if he even watched the shootout win over Bayern Munich in 2012Credit: Getty
The Belgium international always knew it would come, saying: “I had the feeling from the beginning here. People talk about failure when you don’t win the Champions League but it’s so difficult to win it.
“We’ve been fighting for it for the last six years – we’ve always been around the quarter finals, semi-finals. Always been around the best eight teams in Europe.
“But when you play knock-out, small situations can make a difference.
“In the bad situations, we maybe made too many mistakes and this year we didn’t. We’ve been very compact when it became difficult. We’ve done it in the right way this year.”
Having broken boss Guardiola’s last-eight hoodoo against Borussia Dortmund, KdB felt the shackles were off.
He noticed a ‘freedom’ in the semi-final victory over Paris Saint-Germain and that could spell bad news for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
De Bruyne said: “I felt the second game there was some nerves. Everyone was thinking ‘not this again’ – but I think the way we responded was really good.
“Controlled the game, then in the semi-final I didn’t feel any of the nerves. It maybe felt like a hurdle was past.
Everyone has a sense of regret if you don’t win a Champions League but I think Vinny helped to create the history for this clubKevin de Bruyne
“The games against PSG we felt free. It felt fairly good in that aspect.”
His fellow Belgian and former team-mate Vincent Kompany spent 11 years at City and left two years ago without lifting this trophy.
Other legends such as David Silva, Yaya Toure, Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart were the same.
The midfielder – who turns 30 next month – has a few years left yet but wants to make sure when he does go it will be with no regrets.
De Bruyne said: “These guys played a major part. If we won it on Saturday then I’m sure Vinny would be really happy.
“Everyone has a sense of regret if you don’t win a Champions League but I think he helped to create the history for this club.
“He won so many things so I think he’ll be fairly pleased with his career.”
Having waited all this time, there is no way De Bruyne will be missing his first chance to star in a final.

City have had to tread carefully with their superstar nursing three separate injuries over recent weeks to his knee, calf and a tight hamstring.
But he showed no ill-effects in the 5-0 thumping of Everton on Sunday and he confirmed that he will be raring to go in Portugal.
He added: “I could have played against Brighton but the manager decided not to put me in.
“But I’m happy I was able to play the full 90 against Everton and show that I’m a good rhythm.”

Man Utd to make transfer bid for Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak – and prepared to offer David De Gea as makeweight

MANCHESTER UNITED will make an ambitious move for Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak to solve their No 1 crisis. And the Red Devils would let blundering David De Gea go the other way  as a makeweight in the deal for Oblak — in an attempt to get his huge £375,000-a-week wages off their books.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff have had headaches over who starts in goal for months — and gave De Gea and Dean Henderson a chance to claim the jersey.
But some of Solskjaer’s closest advisers have been pushing for Slovenian stopper Oblak, who has just won the LaLiga title with Atletico.
Highly-rated Oblak, 28, would cost in the region of £70million but United are looking at ways of brokering a move with De Gea part of the package.
De Gea, who missed the crucial 22nd penalty in United’s Europa League final shootout defeat to Villarreal on Wednesday,  came through the ranks at Atletico and the move would appeal to him if the money men  get the figures to work.

Henderson, 24, was given a shot at the  No 1 position but a bad game in the 4-2 home loss to Liverpool has cost him. United are open to letting  Spain’s De Gea, 30, go to any top club that can afford him —  but that is a very short list.
Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus could be interested if the deal was right, but Atletico Madrid is the dream answer.
Veteran keeper Tom Heaton, 35, has agreed to rejoin United from Aston Villa on a free transfer, with the futures of current back-ups Lee Grant and Sergio Romero uncertain.
As well as his penalty miss, De Gea failed to save any of Villarreal’s 11 spot-kicks in Gdansk.

Williams, 49, told SunSport: “He’s going to be playing with Lewandowski and Thomas Muller, absolutely sensational, world-class players.
“And just to train with them, never mind the matches against Borussia Dortmund and Co, that will make him a better player and develop him for international football.
“Omar has also got age on his side and Gareth Southgate and scouts from all over the Premier League will be keeping an eye on him for sure.

“If he performs at Bayern Munich I’m sure Southgate will be including him in the England squad.
“It will be hard, because 23 isn’t that young any more when you look at Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden and what they have done.
“So Richards has to make an impact with Bayern pretty soon to get that international recognition.
“But I think Bayern have been very clever to snap him up.

“As a former Reading player, the only downside is that the club won’t get the money they would have got on the open market, which could have been £10-15million.
“But if he plays there and is a success in Germany then those numbers will double pretty quickly.”
Ahead of arriving at Allianz Arena on a four-year deal at the end of the month, the Madejski Stadium academy product admitted he was in dreamland.
London-born Richards said: “My move to FC Bayern is a great  honour for me, a dream come true.
“I’m proud to be wearing the shirt of one of the world’s biggest clubs. I hope I can help the team continue to be successful.
“My thanks to the management at FC Bayern for their trust. Our  conversations were very convincing and I can’t wait to be on the pitch for Bayern.”
Julian Nagelsmann’s new man is not the first star to quit Berkshire for a crack at the big time.
He follows the likes of Premier League aces Gylfi Sigurdsson, Steve Sidwell and Michail Antonio.
Williams added: “He is the  modern-day footballer — very athletic and has decent distribution.
“But even if it doesn’t work out, the ruthless side of me reckons he will come back to England and into the Premier League as a better player and person for the experience.”

Guardiola will make ‘Galactico’ Foden even better – and City star’s Mount battle will be key in Champions League final

WHEN Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City, we had all marvelled at his Barcelona team and knew about his extraordinary CV.But as footballers, we still wondered how special he really was.

I remember a conversation with Fabian Delph when I asked him what Guardiola was really like to work with.
Ever since I’ve known Fabian, from his Leeds days, he was a box-to-box midfielder with attacking instincts.
But Guardiola transformed him into a title-winning left-back in a Manchester City team that racked up 100 points in the 2017-18 season.
Now, Fabian is an old friend and he had no need to butter up his boss to me  but he just said, ‘Mate, this bloke is absolute mustard’.
He told me he genuinely learned something new every day — and this is a guy who had already been a professional footballer for a decade.
Even with the best managers I’ve worked under, you are probably doing the same 20 to 25 training sessions several times a season but apparently, with Pep, every day’s a school day.
This is a manager who makes great players even better. Some of that is Guardiola’s tactical ability and his attention to detail, some of it comes from his extraordinary strength-and- conditioning team.
I look at the way Raheem Sterling — who used to be considered a lightweight player that could go down too easily — has developed into such a strong physical specimen, as well as such an intelligent footballer.

I’ve played against Guardiola’s City several times and been on the receiving end of some good hidings, including Watford’s 6-0 defeat in the FA Cup final two years ago.
And City have a couple of those rare players who, even if you are playing against them, you just stand back and appreciate at times.
In the team that is likely to face Chelsea in Porto for Saturday’s Champions League final, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden would be in that category.
It’s like you’re playing checkers and they’re playing chess. It’s a different game.

David Silva was similar and, while he is a different player from Foden, the England man has clearly learned so much from the Spaniard.
Foden has a Galactico feel about him. He could go to Real Madrid and be the main man — not that City will ever want or need to sell him.
And how good is it for English football that we have Foden and Chelsea’s Mason Mount lining up against each other as key creative footballers on Europe’s biggest stage? Mount is a wonderful player.
I really hope this will be like a proper high-tempo Premier League match — but I reckon it will be more cagey.
Every player, as well as managers Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel, will fully understand the importance of this match.
They can try all they like to make preparations feel “normal” but when you are playing in the very biggest matches of your career,  everything feels different.
Guardiola turned Fabian Delph into a title-winning left-backCredit: Reuters
The build-up is completely different — you are inundated with calls and messages from people you rarely hear from, many wanting tickets. You cannot escape from the build-up to a cup final — TV, radio, papers and online, it’s pointless trying.
I’m a keen people-watcher. Basically, I’m nosey. And as captain, that is part of my role.
And you cannot mistake the way people behave differently in the build-up to these  huge matches.
You notice extroverts going into their shells and quiet players getting really animated and geeing up their team-mates up.
    Nerves change people’s behaviour.
And when the first whistle blows, everything feels different, sounds different. It’s like all of your senses are heightened.
If any player tries to tell you it’s just another game, they are kidding you — perhaps they are kidding themselves.
Troy Deeney has been on the end of some hidings by Man City – including the 6-0 FA Cup final defeat at Wembley in 2019Credit: Jamie McPhilimey – The Sun
There could be a 90,000 Wembley crowd but you just can’t hear them.
I tend to interact with supporters, opponents, referees — but not in a cup final or play-off final or any other absolutely critical match. Your  determination to stay focused is so sharp.
That’s why I think even Guardiola’s City will approach a Champions League final differently.
Chelsea will want to keep it tight but City won’t be gung-ho either.
Even brilliant, creative players often stick to safe passes in the early stages of a final. I was at Tuchel’s first match in charge of Chelsea, a 0-0 draw with Wolves — but you could already tell how he wanted them to play.

The Stamford Bridge side followed that result with a long run of wins and clean sheets and have really impressed me.
Even though they lost the FA Cup final 1-0 to Leicester and got away with a potentially crucial 2-1  defeat at Aston Villa last weekend, they look like a team who can compete for the title —  especially if they sign Erling Haaland or Harry Kane.
Tuchel is a brilliant tactician too but it is Guardiola’s immense experience that means City have the edge, even though Chelsea have beaten them twice since the German took over.
Guardiola hasn’t been to a Champions League final for ten years, since that wonderful Barca side defeated Manchester United 3-1 in a classic at Wembley.
⚽ Read our Football live blog for the very latest news from around the grounds

That was one of THE great team displays but even a purist like Guardiola won’t care if City win 1-0 with a scruffy goal on Saturday — finals are different like that.
Since then, Guardiola has been accused of “over-thinking” things in Champions League knockout ties — but that is the mark of a genius, always having brainwaves.
My old friend probably could not have imagined himself at left-back — but Pep imagined it and Fabian has the title-winner’s medal to prove that it worked.

Man Utd’s David De Gea dilemma mirrors Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil issue as Spanish goalkeeper earns as much as £500,000 a WEEK

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER thought he was spoilt for choice with goalkeepers.Instead, the Manchester United manager goes into the summer with a huge headache in this department.

Arsenal had a similar situation with Mesut Ozil’s contract at the EmiratesCredit: Getty
United knew they had big calls to make but their problems appeared to be elsewhere.
Instead, the club do not appear to have a truly top-class keeper. Or certainly not one they have faith in.
The situation with David De Gea, 30, and 24-year-old Dean Henderson cannot continue as Solskjaer trusts neither.
Tom Heaton is joining as No 3 but, potentially, United must look at signing another keeper.
Either De Gea or Henderson will have to leave, whether on loan or permanently.
With Spanish No 1 De Gea, United are in an Arsenal-Mesut Ozil situation.
De Gea did not cover himself in glory in Wednesday’s Europa League final penalty shootout by failing to get near any of the 11 spot-kicks.
It means he has failed to save ANY of the last 40 penalties faced for club and country since April 2016.

He also missed his penalty, United’s 11th of the shootout, handing victory to Villarreal.
But De Gea looked low in confidence throughout the game and could have done better for Gerard Moreno’s opening goal.
De Gea is not stupid. He knows Solskjaer has major doubts over him as a player.
And the same applies to Henderson, who has not seized the chance to be top dog.
United will not want to sell Henderson but it depends on De Gea. He earns £375,000 a week basic and, with bonuses, can bank up to £500,000.
Like Ozil at Arsenal, no club will want to sign him permanently on those wages.
So United will see if they can find De Gea a club who will cover a large part of his salary.
But if they cannot find an interested club, it could be Henderson who is loaned out.

Heaton, 35, has left Aston Villa and will be back-up, with Sergio Romero set to leave.
Yet Henderson’s situation is also a major issue for England boss Gareth Southgate.
He named four keepers in a 33-man squad, with Henderson joined by Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale.
So if Pickford is injured, England have a problem.
Marcus Rashford is also still battling shoulder and foot issues ahead of the Euros opener with Croatia on June 13.
It leaves Southgate with plenty to ponder before a friendly against Austria on Wednesday.

Cops and loan club West Ham have no idea how a thief brazenly sneaked into the heavily-guarded dressing room during a game.
Players and staff searched the room to no avail on May 9 before the star contacted police.
Rooms at the London Stadium are only accessible to players and senior officials.
They are monitored by CCTV and patrolled by security.
    ‘HE’S DEVASTATED’
Midfielder Lingard, on loan from Manchester United, has a collection of high-end watches, some thought to be worth six figures. One is specially designed by Swiss maker Richard Mille.
A source said: “Jesse was devastated, but nobody can believe it.
“It’s completely unheard of for something to be stolen from inside the players’ dressing rooms during a game.

“Of course everyone has searched high and low but it appears it has definitely been taken, and there was no option but to call in the police.
“Everyone is gutted for him, he loved that watch and thought it would be safe.
“It goes without saying Premier League footballers are well paid, and many of them have expensive items including clothing and jewellery.
“But it would just never occur to anyone that it could be taken from there. It’s a real shock.”

Carroll did a U-turn, but was forced to drive on the wrong side of the road as he was pursued back to West Ham’s training ground.
In a 999 call played in court he was heard telling responders: “There’s two motorbikes, one’s behind me pulling out a gun.”
Two years ago moped thugs targeted former Arsenal players Mezut Ozil and Sead Kolašinac for their £200,000 watches in North London.

Bosnian defender Kolašinac chased the knife-wielding attackers who were part of a gang that were later jailed for ten years. Last May armed raiders made off with watches worth £350,000 from the home of Lingard’s England teammate Dele Alli.
Man City winger Riyad Mahrez had a £230,000 Richard Mille timepiece, a £40,000 Rolex Daytona and a £35,000 Rolex Day Date nicked from his Manchester penthouse.
Liverpool stars Sadio Mane, Roberto Firminho and club legend Steve Gerrard have all been targeted when thieves knew they would be involved in major matches so would not be at home.
Gerrard’s wife Alex was left terrified when thugs threatened to abduct their children if she did not co-operate.
He was away leading his side in the Champions League. The Lingard raid, in the supposed sanctuary of a dressing room, is sure to shock the footballing world.
A West Ham United spokesperson said: “The incident happened a month ago and the Club took all appropriate steps at the time.

“While we will continue to assist with the matter, we are unable to comment further as this is now part of an ongoing police investigation.”
The Met Police confirmed to The Sun: “Police are investigating a burglary at the London Stadium. It was reported that a watch was stolen from a changing room on the afternoon or evening of Sunday May 9.”
A spokesman for Jesse added: “We can’t comment on an ongoing investigation.” More

And that led to a tight hamstring and a minor issue with his calf in the weeks that followed.
So City chose to adopt an ultra-cautious approach with De Bruyne to ensure he is in top shape for the showdown with his old club Chelsea in Porto on Saturday night.
He believed he was ready to return at Brighton nine days ago.
But City’s medical team, along with boss Pep Guardiola, did not want to take any unnecessary risks.
That meant he went 19 days without playing a minute after starring in the Champions League last-four win over French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
But any concerns about how he would react against Everton on  Sunday were blown away when he scored within 11 minutes.
KDB told the medics he was very happy with how he came through the 90 minutes and felt like he was in a good rhythm.
And that was a huge relief for Guardiola who is desperate to have his talisman in the team for their big night.

Speaking after the 5-0 win against Everton that put the cherry on top of their title-winning season, centre-back John Stones admitted there will be nerves for the final – but the City squad are more than capable of dealing with them.
The England defender said: “I’m sure everyone will be nervous but the lads wouldn’t be where they are without knowing how to control those things, big pressure, big games.
“We’ve got the calibre of players for this occasion. It is a final and we’ve been in so many finals.
“We’ve got the passion and desire to win it.
“To finish the Premier League on a high like that is what we needed and to go into the next game, scoring so many goals and keeping a clean sheet, is perfect.”
Liverpool boast the most-valuable squad in the Premier League

He added: “It’s been an incredible season. From where we were in December, I think it shows the strength of the boys.
“Everyone has pulled their weight and come together as a team.
“We have got another game to go, we can make some more history but in these times – Covid times, everything different and difficult, games every three days – it shouldn’t be underestimated what we’ve all done this season as a club.”
