Phil Foden has a barnet like Gazza, so let him play like Gazza, says Harry Redknapp

ONE of the big talking points before the Euros was whether Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate would be bold and play Phil Foden. But now he’s got to be even bolder and let him off the leash – because if you’re going to stick him on the right wing, you might as well not pick him at all.

We all know what Foden can do, we’ve seen how dangerous he is, but in both England games now he has been completely wasted out wide.
Gareth is never going to be a manager whose team plays a flamboyant style, we’re never going to see open, attacking football from them.
My nature is to have a go, but I think he’s always going to be more interested in making us hard to beat.
It’s one of the reasons why – as much as I want to see Jack Grealish in there – I don’t believe he’s going to start him. I’ve said that all along.
Fair enough, he’s the manager and it’s his call. But if you’re not going to pick Jack, then Foden has got to be the one who makes things happen.
And he’s never going to do that if he’s spending his time out wide. They have to get him on the ball, get him in the pocket, and let the full-backs take the space he’s leaving.
As much as he loves playing for England, I bet he hates being stuck out there. Gareth might as well not pick him at all. He’s got to put him in the right position, not do it just to get him into the team.
Drag him off the line and be bold. Give him more control, because Foden is good enough to control the game.
He’s dyed his barnet like Gazza had all those years ago, now let him run the show like he did as well!

The way Scotland lined up, if Foden was given the freedom to move inside, our full-backs would have been the key. That’s what should have happened, anyway.
I played that system of three at the back myself at Portsmouth, and for a season at West Ham, so I know it can cause you problems with the other team’s full-backs.
But England’s were really disappointing. I thought they’d be bombing forward, giving us two v one down both sides. That’s how you outnumber the opposition, but Luke Shaw and Reece James both really played within themselves.
James is a great crosser of a ball, and Shaw had a brilliant season with Manchester United, but there was nothing from either on Friday against Scotland.
It’s like they were scared to go at times, instead of forcing their wing backs to defend. Then again, I’ve thought all along that – no disrespect to Luke – Ben Chilwell is the answer on the left.
And it will be interesting to see what happens with Harry Maguire, now he’s finally fit again.
Everyone seems to think he should go straight back into the side against the Czechs, but that would be really harsh on Tyrone Mings. You have to admit he hasn’t put a foot wrong in either match so far, and England haven’t conceded a goal, so defensively at least there’s not been a problem.

If only we could say the same about the rest of it, because against Scotland we were just too safe, we were toothless.
And although Harry Kane hasn’t been anything like his best, I still wouldn’t have taken him off because he’s always likely to score.
But although it wasn’t great, although there wasn’t much to get excited about, England are still going to qualify.
There’s actually an argument for saying we’d have an easier route if we went through in second place, and avoided the runner-up in France’s group, so who knows.
And Scotland have a better team than a lot of people gave them credit for, and Friday was always going to be tough.
I do think we all went a bit overboard after the first game, because Croatia were poor and just a shadow of the team that beat us in the World Cup semi-final.
But while we weren’t as good as some people were saying then, we’re not as bad as many are claiming now.
All in all, England will be in the knockout stages… and when it comes to a one-off game, we all know anything can happen.

Fulham want Steve Cooper to replace Scott Parker for Prem promotion push

FULHAM have put Steve Cooper on the top of their wanted list to be Scott Parker’s replacement as boss. The relegated outfit think Swansea chief Cooper would be ideal as he plays good football with young teams, as they aim for a quick return to the top flight.

And Fulham would pay the compensation figure for Cooper and his team, which is only £3.5million for a Championship club — £1m less than if a Premier League side took him.
Swansea will demand every penny for Cooper and his staff, including highly-rated right-hand man Mike Marsh.
The Cottagers do not want to spend but will soon have money to invest as Bournemouth will pay to take Parker — as we first revealed.
Fulham prefer Cooper to other targets.
Eddie Howe has support after being left on the shelf during the summer.
He snubbed Celtic and a move to Scotland but may fancy London.
Cooper has been strongly linked with Crystal Palace after two fine seasons in charge of the Swans but the Eagles have ripped up their list and are now looking elsewhere for their manager.

Fulham are adamant they will not let their manager, who still has two years left on his £3million-a-year contract, go on the cheap.

Crystal Palace subject of £220m takeover bid as hologram pioneer leads consortium

CRYSTAL PALACE are the subject of a £220million takeover bid — by a pioneer in hologram technology.American investor John Textor is understood to be leading a consortium that is attempting to take control of the club.

Palace’s future has been up in the air for some time amid reports current American co-owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer both want to sell the stakes they bought in 2015.
But after a number of bidders have come and gone, Eagles supporters will need convincing that Textor has real substance.
Although negotiations are believed to be at an advanced stage, there are doubts in financial circles about whether Textor is the right man to steer the Premier League club into a new era.
He is best known for leading the company that created holograms of deceased rapper Tupac Shakur for the Coachella Music Festival in 2012 and of the late Michael Jackson for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.
But his name is mud in Hollywood because he was the chief executive who oversaw the slide into administration of renowned visual effects firm Digital Domain in 2012.
DD had previously won Oscars for work on films including Titanic.
But an attempt to change the company’s business model failed spectacularly and it filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy with debts of around £160m.
Unlike Harris and Blitzer, Textor is not a billionaire and so will have needed financial support from elsewhere to put together his Palace bid.

Harris, Blitzer and long-term chairman Steve Parish hold equal stakes of about 18 per cent.
Anyone wishing to have real control of Palace would need to take all three of them out.
Harris wants an exit from football, but business partner Blitzer has been building up a portfolio.
He has bought stakes in Bundesliga side Augsburg, Belgian team Beveren and other clubs.

England ace Jack Grealish secretly reunited with stunning model ex before Euro 2020

THREE Lions star Jack Grealish is back with his stunning girlfriend — but has been keeping the news hush-hush.The Aston Villa ace, who  split briefly from model Sasha Attwood, now  considers her his “secret weapon” off the pitch.

The loved-up couple met while they were teenagers at St Peter’s Roman Catholic Secondary School in Solihull, West Mids.
A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Jack and Sasha have been through a rocky patch but are firmly back on track now.
“Jack is keen to keep Sasha out of the limelight and she keeps him grounded.
“He thinks it’s best if the fans still think he’s single, but she’s been cheering him on from the side lines during the Euros.

Earlier this year Jack, 25, reportedly tried to hit on Love Island star Natalia Zoppa online.
Natalia, 21, was said to have  got a direct message on  Instagram.  In a TikTok clip, her partner Hass Saleh claimed: “As if today couldn’t get any weirder, the best player in the Premier League tried to chat up my missus.”
Friends say Jack was only liking her pictures and has remained “devoted and loyal” to Sasha, 25.

She has been proudly cheering Jack on at Wembley and joining in the party with fellow Wags.
Sasha was spotted teaming an England shirt, with Grealish on the back, with  white Alexander Wang denim shorts at Wembley last Sunday before victory over  Croatia.
And she was in the crowd on Friday night to watch Jack come on as a sub in the 0-0 draw against Scotland.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s down-to-earth missus Megan Davison has been crowned Queen of England’s Wags.

And while England hopes he is a pair of safe hands, Megan, 27, is widely regarded by the women  making their debut at the Euros as an old hand after her experience from the 2018 World Cup.
A source said: “What you see with Megan is what you get — she’s totally genuine, reliable and trustworthy. She has never taken for granted the life she lives, has stayed true to her roots and knows how daunting this is for those who are new to it.
“Megan is grounded and that relaxes everyone around her. She’s a calming influence on everyone. She’s an all-round girls’ girl.”
Megs, as friends know her, is a mum of one and a university graduate. She was there to meet the new Wags as they arrived at a secret hotel ahead of England’s group opener against Croatia.
Wearing a cropped white England shirt with Pickford on the back, denim shorts, £1,090 blue Chanel sandals and carrying a £2,000 Christian Dior handbag, she met them in the lobby and took them through to the pre-match party.

Megan shared  the “family” lunch on Instagram — with videos of the brass band, the menu and the face-  paint station where her two-year-old son Arlo got England flags painted on his cheeks.
A day earlier, Megan had taken Arlo to the Rainforest Café in central London with Harry Maguire’s partner Fern Hawkins.
The source added: “Everyone gets on with her and her family. They’re just extremely down-to-earth, no airs and graces, no expectations.
“Megan knows what it’s like coming into the limelight.
“It’s terrifying at first but she’ll do everything to welcome them into the England family.”
Jack is keen to keep model Sasha out of the limelight and she keeps him grounded

Megan and Jordan began dating at 14 after meeting at St Robert of Newminster RC secondary school, in Washington, near Sunderland.
She studied at Sunderland University while Jordan learned his trade in the lower leagues at clubs like Preston and Carlisle. The couple then moved to Cheshire after his £30million transfer from Sunderland to Everton in 2017.
They wed in March 2020 at a register office — with the £60,000-a-week goalie in a pair of ripped jeans and a baseball cap and Megan in an ivory blouse.

Euro 2020: England fans left frustrated as Three Lions outplayed by Scotland and held to 0-0 draw

ENGLAND fans were left frustrated last night as the Three Lions were held to a 0-0 Euros draw by battling Scotland. Gareth Southgate’s stars missed a golden chance to seal their place in the knock-out stages thanks to a plucky display by the Auld Enemy.

But they remain hot favourites to win Group D if they beat the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.
A point will see them qualify and put them on collision course with one of France, Germany or Portugal.
The atmosphere among Wembley’s 22,500 Covid-restricted crowd reached fever pitch before kick-off when the Scottish anthem was booed by home fans.
Both teams took the knee with the anti-racism gesture greeted by a mixture of jeers and applause.
After a cagey start, England defender John Stones towered above the Scottish defence to head against the post.
Moments later Chelsea’s Mason Mount was unable to convert another chance from six yards out with the Scottish defence in tatters.
The visitors rallied and England keeper Jordan Pickford palmed away a Stephen O’Donnell volley on 30 minutes.
Below-par England huffed and puffed but failed to register a single shot on target in the first half.
Scotland outplayed their hosts for much of the game.

Their defence snuffed out England captain Harry Kane, who appeared tired before being substituted for Marcus Rashford.
The final whistle signalled only the fourth 0-0 in 115 meetings between football’s oldest rivals.
Fans in the stadium and millions more in pubs and homes across the nation were left subdued.
Three Lions fan Steve Biggins, a 34-year-old roofer from Fulham, West London said: “It was a tough watch because on paper we had a far better team than the Scots.
“But they dug deep and have succeeded in frustrating us. But it was never going to be easy and we still have a great chance if we can get fired up to beat the Czechs.”
Loss adjuster Paul Elliott, 26, from Luton, Beds said: “It’s not the result I hoped for or expected because we came into the game red hot favourites.
“But that’s what happens in football and I’m sure we have the character and the great players to bounce back.
“It’s a small setback but we’re unbeaten. It’s still coming home.”
Retired council officer John Millar, 61, from Stourbridge, West Mids, said: “We had the chances to win but never quite got going, and fair play to the Scots they put up a hell of a fight.
“But we have four points in the group and a great chance of progressing if we can get back into top gear.” Storms lashed London for hours before kick-off.

Up to 20,000 Scots headed south despite being allocated just 3,000 tickets. Boozed-up fans danced naked in London’s Hyde Park.
They skinny-dipped in the park’s Serpentine and stumbled all over the capital chanting: “No Scotland, no party!”
In Leicester Square, cheeky fans lifted kilts and bared bums as the West End turned into a sea of tartan and St Andrew saltires. Police kept a low profile as the atmosphere stayed good-natured while the crowd cheered their heroes.
The rain failed to dampen the Scotland fans’ spirits as they swigged beers and lit blue and white flares. And one reveller poked fun by wearing a glum Gareth Southgate mask.
But Covid distancing appeared to be totally ignored — amid mounting anger that Scottish Premier Nicola Sturgeon had done nothing to halt the mass invasion.
Earlier this year she condemned Rangers fans who gathered to celebrate their league title — but said nothing about the Tartan Army’s invasion last night, only appealing for them to “stay safe” and “be respectful to our hosts”.

England Wags were out in force in the socially-distanced VIP seats and wore Three Lions shirts bearing their partners’ names.
They included Harry Kane’s wife Katie, 27, Jordan Pickford’s missus Megan Davison, 25, and Kyle Walker’s partner Annie Kilner, 27.
Also there were Harry Maguire’s fiancée Fern Hawkins, 25, Luke Shaw’s girlfriend Anouska Santos, 29 and Kieran Trippier’s wife Charlotte, 29.
The Wags army was bolstered by Kalvin Phillips’ girlfriend Ashleigh Behan, 26, Raheem Sterling’s girlfriend Paige Milian, 26 and Declan Rice’s partner Lauren Fryer, 22
The girls have been banned from seeing their loved ones owing to Covid restrictions, which could keep them apart till July 11 if England reach the final.
But the lionesses have formed their own bubble during the tournament and were on top form as they cheered on their men. Celebs at the game included David Beckham and son Romeo, and Scotland-mad Sir Rod Stewart, who paid a fortune for an executive box for six family and friends.
The singer, who was born in London but is of Scottish descent, had predicted a 1-0 win for Steve Clarke’s men.
Sir Rod told The Sun: “I’ve been watching these games since I was aged 14 — England and Scotland — and I’ve had my heart broken so many times.”
Chief Inspector Joe Stokoe, spokesman for the Met’s Euros police operation, said: “Two men were arrested last night. A 25-year-old man was arrested for indecent exposure in Hyde Park.
“He was taken into police custody before being cautioned and released. Another man was arrested for the attempted theft of a police officer’s hat, assault with intent of avoiding arrest and assault of emergency worker.
“He was taken to a South London police station where he currently remains.”

Imagine being s**t at football like me with ‘Lineker, 10, on your shirt, says George

IT isn’t easy being the child of a famous parent – just ask Charlie Chaplin Jr, Liza Minnelli or Kelly Osbourne. So spare a thought for a young George Lineker, son of England legend Gary, as he lumbered around the pitch with “Lineker, 10” on the back of his shirt.
George Lineker opens up on his famous dad, GaryCredit: PA
Which, as a modest — and now grown-up — George admits, are where the pair’s similarities ended.
Speaking on the eve of Father’s Day, George says: “I am so proud of him.
“It’s unbelievable to have achieved what he has but I suppose there was a little bit of pressure on me in terms of football, especially as I was so useless. Actually, I was sh*t, can I say sh*t? (Yes, George).
“I was a striker, which meant there was even more pressure. So when opponents clocked who I was, they expected me to be good.
“I’d beg everyone not to call me ‘Lineker’. I hated when they saw that name on the back of my shirt, it was just so embarrassing, especially when you’re at secondary school, and you’re in a sh*t team and they’d shout ‘Lineker!’. I just wanted to run and hide.
“Even if I had been any good, it was very unlikely I’d ever live up to expectations.”
Such expectations, of course, result from the former Spurs and Everton star’s 80 England caps — scoring 48 goals in the process — a successful stint playing for Barcelona (during which time he became fluent in Spanish), a whiter than white disciplinary record of no yellow cards as a player, an OBE and then a seamless, award-winning transition into TV.

    DETERMINED TO STRIKE OUT
For the past 22 years Gary has hosted Match Of The Day, becoming one of the BBC’s most coveted, successful — and highly paid — broadcasters of all time.
He’s also been paid a lot to eat many crisps over the years.
In addition, the proud family man recently announced he was quitting BT Sport in order to spend more time with his sons, watching his beloved Leicester City in Europe next season.
As the eldest of four boys, the others being Harry, 27, Tobias, 25, and Angus, 23, from Gary’s marriage to first wife Michelle Cockayne, usually the clan would congregate for a roast lunch on Father’s Day.
Tomorrow, though, Gary is in Manchester covering the Euros meaning the clan will make do with a phone call.
Now 29, George remains incredibly close to his dad — but is determined to strike out on his own. (Just not as a striker).
He adds: “It’s so annoying, whatever my dad does, he does brilliantly. He won’t do it unless he knows he’ll be the best. It’s probably a sportsman thing. So he’s amazing at cooking, for instance. It’s like living with a personal chef. I live ten minutes away so will drive round and he’ll cook me dinner.
“So with the cooking, he kept practising and became obsessive and obviously got really, really good.
Gary Lineker in his England kitCredit: Getty
“My favourite dish of his is probably his Spanish style seabass with crispy potatoes and tomatoes.
“He’s really good at cricket, and golf, and snooker, and obviously football, and is now one of the very best broadcasters in the game.
“Everything he does, he does well. I’m the opposite. I’m sh*t at everything. Except cricket, maybe – I’m average at that.”
George says he never got to see his dad, a massive fan of his first club Leicester City, play a game and has still, to this day, not watched a replay of him play a full 90 minutes. I’ve seen maybe a few old YouTube clips,” he says with a grin. “And I support Man United, which he absolutely hates!
“My friend at school told me to support them and I went home that night and told him I support Utd, and he said: ‘No, you don’t.’
“The more p***ed off he got, the more I supported them because I wanted to be so contrary back then. I’m the only one in the family not to support Leicester.
“But I remember one morning my mum coming upstairs, telling me I needed to go into the kitchen.
“I went, and Peter Schmeichel was sitting having breakfast with Alan Hansen. That was quite cool. I have a signed, framed shirt of his that he once gave me after a game. I’m a big fan.”
George tries his hand at cricket with dadCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
George, pals with Spencer Morgan — the son of another famous man, Piers, with whom he went to school, is playing down his talents.
Extremely likeable, he carries none of the sense of entitlement of many a privileged kid.
He’s launched a new tech app, YourBusinessNumber, which allows users to set up a second mobile phone number without the hassle of getting another phone.
Alongside business partner, entrepreneur Sebastian Lewis, 35, the pair have politely declined any funding from Gary, determined to forge their own path. The app is being targeted at the self-employed, and those working from home post-pandemic. And if all goes to plan they will turnover £1million a year within their first 18 months of trading.
Speaking over a pint in London bar 180 The Strand, George adds: “We need financial help but I don’t want to just go running to my dad.
“I want people to invest in me because they believe in the product – not because of who my dad is.”
Going back to his dad though, how does he feel about him being an unlikely sex symbol, aged 60.
Or, even worse for a twenty-something lad, how did he feel reading a magazine interview two years ago in which Gary said he wasn’t “massively into sex”?
“Oh God,” he says with a grimace. “I saw that headline and was like: ‘Gaz, what is this?!’
“And he said ‘It’s out of context!’ I don’t really want to think about him having sex but he didn’t seem too bothered. I didn’t read it.
“I think he’s just given up now, he’s not that fussed. But he is 60. I think he’s done with dating now . . .
“It’s weird that people think of him as a heart-throb. Sometimes my female mates tell me he’s fit and ask me to set them up, and I tell them absolutely not, it’s not happening!”

    HAPPILY SINGLE
Like father like son, George is also happily single.
Unsurprisingly he’s been asked to go on “almost every reality show out there” — including Love Island. “That was something I was tempted by,” he adds.
“But then I have to look at it and think I’m only getting asked because of my dad. And if he’s not keen on it, then I wouldn’t do it. The thought of him seeing me snog someone on telly is a bit sketchy too. You’ve got to be a big personality, and be in silly shape — and I’m neither of those things. I’m quite chilled and laid back.”
George is also a big charity campaigner. It is something close to his heart after he battled acute myeloid leukaemia as a baby.
Gary has previously said he was plagued by nightmares that his son would die from the rare blood cancer, suffering recurring dreams that he was left clutching a “small, white coffin”.
Three years ago the pair filmed a moving four-minute clip for Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer documenting George’s “devastating” fight for life.
They were widely praised by viewers, with many saying Gary’s tribute left them in floods of tears.
“I was given a ten to 20 per cent chance of survival about four times,” George explains. “But it was a lot worse for my parents as I was six months old and obviously don’t remember any of that time, but I know it was traumatic for them.
