Man Utd’s capitulation at Watford will live in infamy as day club legend Solskjaer was betrayed and abandoned by players

IT IS a date that will live in infamy.Saturday November 20, when a good man, a club legend was finally abandoned and betrayed by the players he trusted to wear the famous Manchester United shirt.

He would constantly tell them how fortunate they were to pull it on and represent the world’s most famous sports team.
He knew. They clearly did not.
The 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday was the biggest shambles in the club’s modern history.
A day when the players were happy to see their manager hung out to dry.
Yes, the boss had his shortcomings, which were clear to see when he was tested at the very highest level.
Still he deserved better than this — much, much better than this.

So when the fans see social media messages from the players apologising, praising and thanking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, one can only imagine the reaction.
    Take this one from skipper @HarryMaguire93 . . .
“You signed me for the best club in the world and gave me the biggest honour in football. Huge respect and forever grateful. Thank you for everything boss. Legend.” Probably best he, or perhaps his social media team, does not look at the responses.
The time for action and not words has come and gone.
The 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday was the biggest shambles in the club’s modern history.
Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City and Watford — four shocking performances, four games lost, 15 goals conceded.
Here are the seven players who started all of them: David de Gea, Victor Lindelof, Maguire, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Seven players who were trusted and trusted again.
Seven highly-paid players who have been part of the most shameful period Red Devils fans can remember.
Leicester was a calamitous defensive performance. Liverpool at home the tactics were all wrong but they were outfought and over-powered.
Against Manchester City, it bordered on embarrassing, their inability to get and keep the ball.
    ‘SHOW SOME RESPECT’
But Watford were a team who stood a place above the relegation zone having won one of their previous seven games, one who had recently changed their manager again.
This was a chance to save the boss, even if for the time being.
At least show you wanted to play for the boss, show some respect.
    There was none of that.
When the players went to the fans to show their appreciation you started to wince.
Solskjaer knows what it means to wear the Manchester United shirt, sadly not enough of his players did. He is best off out of it.
    What were they expecting?
Manchester United fans are some of the most forgiving around. I shake my head in wonder at the standing ovations some players get when they are subbed off.
It was incredible the way they cheered Solskjaer at half-time in the home Champions League game against Atalanta back on October 20 with the side 2-0 down.
They would come back and win 3-2.
But you cannot take the mick out of people’s loyalty.
    FAITHFUL FANS
These are some of the most loyal around — home, away, Europe, round the world, their every penny earned spent on their club.
I heard a story about one United fan that is worth repeating to describe some people’s devotion to a club.
During Covid restrictions, while football continued but fans were not allowed in, he would drive from his home in Manchester to every ground United played at, park outside, listen on the radio and drive home.
Even to Brighton twice in five days at the start of last season.
So my guess is he was in the away end at Vicarage Road when the players began to approach the fans.
If they expected a warm, forgiving reception from their faithful followers they did not get it.
What they got was one of the most vitriolic reactions these players will ever experience from their own fans.
    BRU ARE YA?
Who does Fernandes think he is having a go back?
A player who has done a very clever disappearing act and whose body language suggests it is everyone else’s fault but his.
It is not going to improve any time soon all this. What do you expect with Solskjaer’s trusted assistant Michael Carrick now at the wheel?
Good man as well but how is that going to change anything?
Lose to Villarreal tomorrow and there is every chance they will be heading out of the Champions League at the group stage once again.
The game against high-flying Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Saturday will be watched painfully through their fingers by the faithful.
But they will be there, they are always there but to take that for granted, as this group has, is a disgrace.
Solskjaer knows what it means to wear the Manchester United shirt, sadly not enough of his players did.
He is best off out of it.

Man Utd fans still sing of Gerrard’s slip and Demba Ba… former Liverpool boss Rodgers won’t be an instant crowd-pleaser

IF Manchester United do manage to rush through the appointment of Brendan Rodgers, it would not be an easy sell to the Old Trafford faithful. Here is a manager sacked by Liverpool, currently in charge of a side four places lower than United, and with a track record of late capitulations in the Premier League.

Red Devils fans still sing about Steven Gerrard’s slip which ended Rodgers’ title hopesCredit: Sky Sports
While many of us believe Rodgers would be a fine successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he would not be an instant crowd-pleaser.
The Northern Irishman is a shrewd tactician, with a keen eye for a player.
He is also far more comfortable in his own skin, and less desperate to please, than the cheesemonger who took charge of Liverpool almost a decade ago.
That Rodgers has inserted a get-out clause in his Leicester contract enabling him to speak to specified clubs – including United – should they make an approach, also suggests he is up for the significant challenge of replacing Solskjaer.
Having sacked Jose Mourinho three years ago, United are reluctant to hire another bad cop.
Rodgers is a modern man-manager but no glad sufferer of fools.

FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN NEW CUSTOMER DEALS
He is capable of improving an ego-heavy United squad without trashing the joint.
But for United’s support – so loyal to Solskjaer for so long – a former Liverpool boss would rankle.
They still sing gleefully of Steve Gerrard ‘slipping on his a**e and giving to Demba Ba’, when the Anfield Spring masterminded by Rodgers in 2014 ended with Liverpool blowing the title.
And having guided Leicester into the Champions League places for the vast majority of the past two seasons, Rodgers oversaw late collapses and fifth-place finishes on both occasions.
Winning the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history was no mere consolation. United, of course, have won nowt for four seasons.
But the United hierarchy, somehow, were impressed enough with Solskjaer to offer him a new three-year contract this summer. They have now sacked him, with Leicester beneath them.
Still, if compo is stumped up and Rodgers goes to Old Trafford, it would spare United from the confusion they hinted at in the statement announcing Solskjaer’s exit yesterday.
    WHO WILL TAKE THE THRONE?
This suggested that, having sacked a manager who should only have ever been a caretaker, they would replace him with a caretaker. Then an interim manager. Then a proper manager next summer.
The assumption at any other major club would be that an agreement in principle had already been reached to appoint a specific new boss at the end of the season.
Perhaps Mauricio Pochettino – the bloke backed by Sir Alex Ferguson and the bloke who spent a year out of work, expecting United to phone, before accepting the Paris St Germain job.
They still sing gleefully of Steve Gerrard ‘slipping on his a**e and giving to Demba Ba’, when the Anfield Spring masterminded by Rodgers in 2014 ended with Liverpool blowing the title.
Or perhaps Erik ten Hag, the progressive boss of Ajax, might decide to leave possibly the best-run major football club in Europe for probably the worst-run.
And if United were just waiting for any world-class manager to become available, then why hadn’t they appointed Antonio Conte, who waited for their call after the 5-0 home humiliation by Liverpool last month?
That Solskjaer survived such a car crash, only to steam headlong into another when Manchester City demolished them two weeks later, suggested United’s hierarchy held a bizarre belief that the Norwegian was the man for the long haul.
Yet after another abject surrender at Watford, United finally bowed to what had long seemed inevitable to most.
    GLAZERS MUST GET IT RIGHT
At Vicarage Road on Saturday, David De Gea delivered a perfect epitaph to Solskjaer’s reign – ‘we don’t know what to do with the ball and we can’t defend properly’.
It was reminiscent of the famous line which stated that there were only three problems with England’s cricket team – ‘they can’t bat, they can’t bowl and they can’t field’.
Yet that pearl, from 1986, was dispensed by a journalist – the late, great Martin Johnson. This one was delivered by United’s actual goalkeeper.
And this air of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ extends way beyond a woefully under-performing team and an out-of-depth manager.
The ruling Glazer brothers and their men on the ground – led woefully by Ed Woodward these past eight years – are a shambling rabble.
Fixated by commercial deals and social-media reach, they prefer Hollywood signings to boring old fuddy-duddy stuff such as team-building and coaching.
Each footballing disaster brings forth bespoke online apologies from United players, each attracting hundreds of thousands of ‘likes’, which managing director Richard Arnold can boast about when the figures are published.
    CAN’T MAKE SAME MISTAKE TWICE
It is an extraordinary way to run a world-famous institution. But then United are a club for the age of memes and gifs.
Even the good moments under Solskjaer were generally instances of individual brilliance and breathless late comebacks, rather than results earned through tactical nous.
This club has never recovered from the retirement of the almighty Ferguson – who left behind no real footballing infrastructure, because he was such a genius he’d barely needed one.
Initially, Solskjaer’s appointment was a soothing dose of nostalgia for those Ferguson years – a fumigation of the place after Mourinho had stank it out.
It was only ever meant to be a caretaker stint, but an early winning streak gave the Norwegian irresistible momentum.
So if Rodgers doesn’t come, what if this season’s ‘interim’ boss does the same? Does he get the gig full-time? You wouldn’t put it past this lot to make the same mistake twice.
⚽ Read our Manchester United live blog for the latest news and transfer gossip from Old Trafford
Or what if caretaker Michael Carrick pulls off wins over Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal? Does the caretaker become the interim? Could the interim become the permanent?
United have enough great players to go on a decent run at any time. They showed that several times under Solskjaer.
So a swift appointment of Rodgers would at least rid United of even greater chaos.

“He is absolutely on it and brutal. He’s cold-blooded and on it, this is the best Lewis we have seen in the past, and he is right there.
“When adversity happens, then it takes him to a place where he is able to mobilise superhero powers. It was the adversity that triggered that in Interlagos.

Hamilton is now eager to get going again in Saudi Arabia in two weeks’ time before the finale in Abu Dhabi a week later.
He added: “It was pretty straight forward and lonely at the front. I enjoy those races where you’re battling through but we needed those points and it was a solid job.
“I feel great. I feel in the best shape physically than I have been all year.
“The car is feeling better than ever and I feel positive going into the next couple of races, I feel they should be quite good for our car and I’m looking forward to the battle.”
Meanwhile, Verstappen says he knew he would be in for a tough race after being called to the stewards the previous evening for ignoring yellow warning flags.

That is on top of a £7.5million payoff for Solskjaer.
Ex-Liverpool boss Rodgers has a clause in his contract letting him speak to certain clubs if they come knocking — and United are one.
Solskjaer, 48, was fired this morning after nearly three years in charge.
The decision was made within 30 minutes of United’s 4-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday.
SunSport revealed last month that United were making plans to identify the Norwegian’s successor.
A leading agent had been asked to sound out Northern Irishman Rodgers, 48 — as well as Antonio Conte, Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag and ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

The agent reported there was a good chance they could get Rodgers.
But not all fans want him after his time at Anfield.
United have named assistant Michael Carrick as caretaker while they finalise a replacement for Solskjaer.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney accused of building a footballers’ housing estate in dig from local parish council

It is the latest twist in a long-running saga over the ex-England skipper and current Derby County boss’s development of land to build a £20million family home near Knutsford, Cheshire.
Ollerton with Marthall parish council is opposing a neighbour’s bid to build a huge shed at Ryecroft Farm next to the Rooneys.
Council officials are convinced that the barn, complete with exclusive nameplate and driveway, will be transformed into a luxury home once built — and not used for sheep farming as the applicant is claiming.
During the video, the council drags the Rooneys into the row by comparing their redevelopment of Mount Pleasant Farm.
They do not refer to the couple by name but say their developers changed stables into a residence, and installed an all-weather football pitch where an equestrian centre was meant to have been built.
Referring to the neighbouring application, the council says in the film: “There has been building on this site for over ten years, with less than 45 acres of farmable land now remaining.

    ‘A plan devised to fail’
“There is not enough land left to farm or justify barns of this size. The applicant and his family’s primary business is property development, not farming.
“This is a plan devised to fail. Once the business fails, the barn will be converted into yet another house . . . to create what has become a collection of very, very large houses.
“We, as a parish council, ask that you stand against this application to protect the green belt and prevent the conversion of this part of Cheshire into a footballers’ housing estate.”
A source told The Sun on Sunday: “This line is clearly aimed at the Rooneys.
“It seems the council have snooped on their home and land to make this video.”
The Rooneys bought their 40-acre plot for £4.3million in 2018 and built a three-storey mansion including an orangery, cinema and indoor pool.
The construction also included the fencing off and removal of over 50 acres of farmland which is now a landscaped garden. The parish council
The parish council adds of the Rooneys’ development: “The construction also included the fencing off and removal of over 50 acres of farmland which is now a landscaped garden.”
As well as being uploaded to YouTube, the authority’s slick video was sent to Cheshire East Town Council which will rule on the planning application.
The Rooneys and the parish council were both approached for comment.

Jack Grealish and Sasha Attwood rise above Emily Atack and Amber Gill drama to plot future as new Posh and Becks

CLAIMS about his love life have been flying in faster than nasty, studs-up challenges on a busy afternoon with Man City or England. But now fan favourite Jack Grealish has a defender to help him field the attacks after childhood love Sasha Attwood vowed to stand by her man — and insisted she’s the only woman for him.

Aspiring model Sasha poses on social media
Despite all the talk linking Jack to actress Emily Atack and Love Island beauty Amber Gill, The Sun on Sunday can reveal Sasha and Jack are “rising above” it all and busy planning a future as the new Posh and Becks.
A pal said: “Sasha still trusts Jack and they are determined to work through the recent revelations about his links with Amber and Emily.
“They’ve had some heart to hearts but have decided to turn over a fresh leaf together because they love each other and want to work on their relationship.”
Jack, 26, and Sasha, 25, are looking for a new home in Manchester and she hopes to launch herself as a high-fashion model with a jet-set career.
Her friend said: “She’s upset her boyfriend has been caught up with these tawdry stories just as she’s about to sign to a new upmarket agency.
“But she’s focused on them becoming the new Posh and Becks so they’re ploughing on and rising above the drama.

“Sasha is savvy and has her head screwed on.
“If she let every bump in the road get to her, she and Jack would have never lasted this long.
“She understands he is young, handsome and at the top of his game, which will come with attention.”
Meanwhile, we can reveal Jack has spoken with Amber, 21, this week.
A second source said: “Amber and Jack have been in touch this week and he has checked in on her to make sure she is OK. He feels bad about the way she has been treated on social media.”
Sasha, who met Jack when they were both teenagers at St Peter’s Roman Catholic school in Solihull, West Mids, has stood by Jack through a series of rocky patches.
Earlier this year, she seemingly  turned a blind eye after Jack liked a series of 22-year-old Love Islander Lillie Haynes’ sexy Instagram snaps and was later spotted on the celebrity dating app Raya.
Sasha has even previously been described as his “secret weapon” after she supported her man throughout a series of controversies.
In April 2015, Jack was pictured apparently inhaling laughing gas — nitrous oxide — from a balloon.
Just months later, he was then caught in photos showing him lying in the street in Tenerife while on holiday during the off-season.
Last year as the country plunged into lockdown amid the Covid pandemic, the football ace told his army of social media followers: “Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives.”
Just a day later, though, he was pictured looking dishevelled in the street after crashing his Range Rover into parked cars during the early hours.
    BLIND EYE
At Birmingham magistrates’ court, he later admitted two counts of careless driving and was banned from the roads for nine months.
Following the Euros this summer, Sasha bravely opened up about being bombarded with death threats.
Speaking on her YouTube channel, she said: “I was receiving 200 messages a day. I’m not exaggerating when I say that. I had so many messages — every single day.
“I still get them — all day every day.”
Sasha, who was the target of vile trolls sending abuse on TikTok and Instagram, joined the debate around the accountability of social media firms as she labelled the platforms “toxic”.
She said: “Things have obviously blown up over the Euros, but I never thought in a million years it would be this bad.
“It just blows my mind how nasty people can be for no reason whatsoever.
“I’ve always been quite a strong person — always very good at blocking out people’s opinions. But this is on a whole other level.”
She added: “It’s just crazy. It’s the nasty messages about my appearance, people’s opinions. What are you all doing? It’s embarrassing.
“You hear people talking about trolling, but I never realised how bad it was.
    ‘TROLLING SO TOXIC’
“The scary thing is, it’s young girls.
“I’d go on these girls’ accounts who have sent me stuff and they’re aged 13 or 14. It’s so sad.
“I try to put it down to age but then I think that when I was that age I never sent a message like that.
“It’s so toxic, social media, and it’s just really sad this generation has grown up thinking that it’s OK to say things like that.
“Why are you doing it? Please ask yourself why.
“If you’re one of those people who goes out of your way to make a fake account or send a horrible message, wishing someone was dead or talking about their appearance, or talking about their personal life, really, why?
“What are you getting out of it?”
Sasha added: “It was a real s**t time, it was actually horrible, and I was feeling so anxious . . . it was not nice at all.
“I didn’t ask for any of that, didn’t ask for anything to be put out there but it’s out there, isn’t it, and I’m just going to continue to carry on as normal.”

Girlfriend Sasha Attwood has told Jack Grealish to make a choice
Insiders said 26-year-old Jack was still mulling over what to do after girlfriend Sasha issued the England star an ultimatum.
A source said: “Jack has been advised to stay with Sasha but his chemistry with Emily is keeping his interest.
“He told Sasha he was just friends with her but it’s obviously not gone down well. Jack has got some thinking to do.”
As the Premier League star considered his next move, Sasha, 25, and Emily, 31, have wasted no time in getting back to normal.
Sasha posted pictures of herself online wearing a puffer jacket for Pretty Little Thing.
Meanwhile Emily, who has just finished a nationwide tour, was seen in a flower print dress and white boots meeting pals in London.
Jack tried to keep a much lower profile, however, and hid his face as he left his flat in Manchester to travel to the Blues’ training ground.

Jack Grealish ‘asks’ Dear Deidre for help over his girlfriend merry-go-round dilemma & her frank advice is priceless

IT’S been quite a week for football’s latest superstud, Jack Grealish.Jack the Lad has been desperately trying to keep a hat-trick of glamorous beauties onside.
With help from Deidre’s iconic casebook, we take a tongue-in-cheek look at Jack Grealish’s dating dilemmas (pictured here with on-off girlfriend Sasha)Credit: Splash
As The Sun revealed, the £100 million Manchester City ace has been on secret dates with telly star Emily Atack AND Love Island beauty Amber Gill.
Meanwhile the 26-year-old is still assumed to be with his on/off girlfriend of a decade, model Sasha Attwood, 25.
On Saturday, we told how Jack has been texting Inbetweeners’ actress Emily, 31, since September and speaking to her daily.
The pair have reportedly met at her London home and a Manchester hotel.
But on Wednesday we revealed how livid Sasha gave him an ultimatium: It’s me or Emily!
Poor old Jack hardly had time to explain before it emerged that he has also been seeing ANOTHER woman – Love Island winner Amber, 24, for the last few months.

She told a pal: “I really thought there was something between us.”
Good grief. What a pickle for the Alice band aficiando!
Surely there is only one person who can help?
Step forward The Sun’s agony aunt, Dear Deidre.
Here, with help from her iconic casebook, we take a tongue-in-cheek look at Jack’s dating dilemmas.
And while Jack’s letter is probably already in the post, we give him a helping hand by imagining what he would write to the nation’s favourite problem-solver.

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE a problem I think only you can tackle.
I’m 26 and having the time of my life after playing for England at the Euros and signing to a new club.
People reckon I’m the new David Beckham, with the looks and flowing locks to match. I’ve even got myself a modelling gig and clothes range.
I’m a fun-loving guy, always a big hit with the crowd and I’m very popular with the ladies. Transfers I can do, but right now, I’m finding it hard to pick just one side.
I’ve got three special fans in my life and it’s proving tricky to keepy up with them all.
Now they’ve discovered my tactics and let’s just say, the locker room dressings down I’ve had from them could rival any manager. I don’t want to have to choose between them but I’m worried they might each give me the red card.
Do you have any advice on how this player can keep scoring?
    Love Jack x
DEAR JACK: THERE is no harm in having regular warm ups with different partners as long as you are having safe sex and being honest with everyone.
Fair play is all about letting those you are involved with know if you’re only after a little practise session –  rather than a committed partnership.
So don’t be tempted to lie if you don’t want anything more – otherwise you truly deserve to be sent off.
Judging by your letter it sounds like you would do well to learn a bit of ball control. I’m sending you my support pack Can’t Be Faithful which will give you more insight into your behaviour.
Please do write again to deardeidre@the-sun.co.uk for a personal answer from one of my counselling team.
    Love Deidre x
