Glory days for this club seem, and are, a very long time ago.
Which is probably why there is this outpouring of emotion in Nottingham now as they are finally on the verge of being back among the big boys.
They are in tomorrow’s play-off final against Huddersfield courtesy of a tense semi-final second leg penalty shootout win over Sheffield United.
Van Hooijdonk, now a successful TV pundit in Holland, said: “I was watching it. Incredible! I love these end-of-season games.
“I still felt part of it because it was Forest. I just hope they can get the job done now.
“I watched Huddersfield’s semi- final first leg against Luton and did not think they looked as good as Forest.
“This is a very exciting team Steve Cooper has and up front Brennan Johnson is fantastic.

“The only way they will lose is if they choke. It can happen.”
Talking so positively about Forest it is easy to forget Van Hooijdonk famously went on strike for the first three months of the season after they were promoted.
He wants people to understand why. He had arrived at the end of the 1996-97 season but could not stop them from going down.
The following season he stayed to get them up. But he did not enjoy the coaching under then-manager Dave Bassett and believes the club also reneged on an agreement to let him go after the promotion.
Van Hooijdonk said: “I realised in the December of that promotion season that I was not going to improve as a player.
“I always wanted to push myself and while the games were great there was nothing happening in training in between.
“Some of the players might have liked that and been used to it but I wasn’t.
“There was an offer for me from PSV Eindhoven in the December but the club asked me to stay to help them go up and then they would let me go.

“I kept to my side of the bargain but when Newcastle came in for me that summer with a £7million offer they asked for £10m and the chance was gone.
“Meanwhile our captain Colin Cooper was sold to Middlesbrough and Kevin Campbell was sold to Trabzonspor.”
Van Hooijdonk did eventually come back but the team was in a mess and heading out of the league.
He added: “When I came back I met with all the players, explained myself and said if anyone had an issue to speak up.
“Only Geoff Thomas said he did not agree with what I had done and we had a discussion.
“They all knew the sort of person I was. If I had been an ass I would never have stayed and helped the club get promotion.
“For some fans, of course, the relationship did not recover but I want them to understand and know I still remember that promotion season so fondly and I will be cheering them on this Sunday.
“They play good football and if they go up I believe they have the right structure in the way they play, similar to Brentford, to stay up. I hope it all happens.”

Pictures of Carroll and Taylor on the bed in his room and one of her wearing his personalised bathrobe in the bathroom went viral on Thursday.
Staff had managed to spell his surname with a lower case “c” on the gown. It is not known if he complained about the error.
Recalling the night, Taylor, from Scarborough, North Yorks, told The Sun how she and Carroll went back to the swish hotel where rooms average £500 a night.
She insisted nothing sexual happened with anyone and the snaps were just “a joke”.
Taylor explained: “It was an afterparty. We all went back to his hotel.
“There was me, Andy and my female friend. I didn’t sleep with him, it wasn’t like that. There was three of us in the room.
“It was a full day and night of drinking. Andy was steaming. We were all drunk.
“We went back to Andy’s suite and we played some music and he got into bed and passed out.
“I was there with my friend until the early hours and took the photo as a joke.”
Pals of Phoebe, who arrived in Dubai on a one-way ticket in April, last night insisted that she had done nothing wrong.

She studied at Northumbria University, Newcastle, and runs her own firm offering personal training and online fitness courses.
It is understood most of Carroll’s stag party travelled back to the UK yesterday and today.
Billi has vowed to press on with the wedding, accepting that her hubby-to-be is in the clear.
A source close to former Towie star Billi said: “Andy has spoken to her. She believes him when he says nothing happened.
“Footballers are always surrounded by pretty women and it is something she is used to as a Wag.
“She knows it’s part of being married to a footballer. Billi is still angry at him for allowing this situation to occur so soon before their wedding.
“The whole thing is in danger of taking the shine off what should be the happiest few weeks of her life and she doesn’t want that.”
The couple have two young children, while Carroll has two more from a previous relationship.

She explained: “It was an afterparty. We all went back to his hotel. There was me, Andy and my female friend.
“I didn’t sleep with him, it wasn’t like that, there was three of us in the room.
“It was a full day and night of drinking, we’d been at Cove Beach since 12, it was a really boozy day. Andy was steaming, we were all drunk.”

She added: “We went back to Andy’s hotel suite and we played some music and he got into bed and passed out.
“I was there with my friend until the early hours and took the photo as a joke.
“My mates back home were goading me for the lowdown so I took that picture for a laugh and sent it to them.
“Nothing sexual happened. It was just a bit of banter.”
‘NOTHING SEXUAL HAPPENED’
Taylor said she also wanted to sleep so she took off her dress in the bathroom and put on one of the former West Ham player’s bathrobes.
She stressed: “At the end of the day nothing happened that should ruin his relationship. It was just a bit of fun.”
Taylor confirmed she had been partying with Carroll at Cove Beach bar then her and her friends met the stag party at a nightclub later.
She added: “We went to a club and were dancing, it was a great night.”
It comes after the injury-prone striker teamed up with wife-to-be Billi Mucklow in Dubai last week before she and hen party pals flew home.
Two days later the former Newcastle and Liverpool ace kicked off his own stag celebrations — and spent the day partying with bar manager Taylor.
They started at noon at the city’s upmarket Cove Beach club.
Carroll then invited her and two mates to hit the bar at another venue before heading to his hotel suite for an afterparty.
Taylor partied with Carroll and pals, including Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett and goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.
The stag party flew back to the UK yesterday with Carroll expecting a frosty reception from fiancée Billi. The pair met in 2013 and got engaged a year later.

Carroll has two young children with Billi and two from a previous relationship.
Pals close to the couple, who were relieved that “nothing dreadful happened”, said: “This is all very bad timing with the wedding so close.”
Taylor moved to the emirate last summer and is assistant manager at a swanky bar and restaurant at a high end hotel. Carroll, who was released by West Brom a few days ago, landed in Dubai on Sunday to gatecrash Billi’s hen bash.
Carroll met up with a delighted Billi who shared a snap of the pair while renaming her party a “STEN” do.
Next to a photo of them embracing, she wrote: “STEN – Hen Party Crasher @andytcarroll,” suggesting Carroll may be about to start his stag do in the same location.
Billi flew back to the UK on Monday morning leaving Carroll and his mates behind.
On the way to her hen party her pals got her to dress up in a Newcastle United strip, with signs saying “Mrs Carroll to be . . . ” as they got on to the bus to take them to the airport.
Pictured eating McDonald’s food she wrote: “What a way to end the best weekend ever . . . #whentoon becomeone.”
Billi and her pals made the most of her final holiday before marrying Carroll. She shared a series of snaps from her time in Dubai with her closest friends.
Carroll’s stag party including the girls was 15-strong. He was staying at the swish Fairmont Palms resort where rooms average £500 a night.
In January Billi revealed she had chosen her wedding dress from Brown’s Brides, a boutique popular with the girlfriends of top-flight footballers.
Her bridesmaids will include sister Giorgie, her stepdaughter Emilie-Rose Carroll, and former Towie star Shelby Tribble.
Billi asked them to be part of her bridal party at a lavish bash last year.
Carroll said meeting Billi and starting a family with her had changed his life for the better. Speaking in 2019 he said: “I met my missus, and we’ve got four kids living at home now.
“We’ve got animals. We’ve got responsibilities. There’s no more behaviour like it was, you know.
“I was stupid, I was young, and I was carried away with the lifestyle that I had.
“Now it’s completely different. I’m actually a dad. I’ve grown up, and got responsibilities, so . . . I’ve got a purpose.”
Billi found fame on Towie in 2011 but quit two years later to become a yoga teacher. She started up her own studio, Hot Yoga Essex, in 2013 but later stepped back and now teaches there occasionally.
Carroll joined West Brom in January after a spell at Reading following his release from Newcastle in the summer of 2021.
He made 15 Championship appearances for West Brom.

ANDY Carroll was often in the news over his romps, brawls and court cases — but said meeting Billi turned his life around.
The striker accepted a caution in 2008 after an alleged assault on a woman in Newcastle.

Pals close to the former Toon player and ex-Towie star Billi said last night: “This is all very embarrassing with the wedding so close.”
But Taylor, 27, from Scarborough, told The Sun: “It was all just a bit of entirely innocent fun.”

She said the photo was taken on Wednesday night “as a joke”.She explained: “It was an afterparty. We all went back to his hotel. There was me, Andy and my female friend.
“I didn’t sleep with him, it wasn’t like that, there was three of us in the room.
“It was a full day and night of drinking, we’d been at Cove Beach since 12, it was a really boozy day. Andy was steaming, we were all drunk.”
She added: “We went back to Andy’s hotel suite and we played some music and he got into bed and passed out.
“I was there with my friend until the early hours and took the photo as a joke.
“My mates back home were goading me for the lowdown so I took that picture for a laugh and sent it to them.
“Nothing sexual happened. It was just a bit of banter.”
‘NOTHING SEXUAL HAPPENED’
Taylor said she also wanted to sleep so she took off her dress in the bathroom and put on one of the former West Ham player’s bathrobes.
She stressed: “At the end of the day nothing happened that should ruin his relationship. It was just a bit of fun.”
Taylor confirmed she had been partying with Carroll at Cove Beach bar then her and her friends met the stag party at a nightclub later.
She added: “We went to a club and were dancing, it was a great night.”
Taylor partied with Carroll and pals, including Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett and goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.
The stag party is flying back to the UK today with Carroll expecting a frosty reception from fiancée Billi. The pair met in 2013 and got engaged a year later.
Carroll has two young children with Billi and two from a previous relationship.
Pals close to the couple, who were relieved that “nothing dreadful happened”, said: “This is all very bad timing with the wedding so close.”
Taylor moved to the emirate last summer and is assistant manager at Little Soho bar and restaurant in the Al Ain Palace Hotel. Carroll, who was released by West Brom a few days ago, landed in Dubai on Sunday to gatecrash Billi’s hen bash.
Carroll met up with a delighted Billi who shared a snap of the pair while renaming her party a “STEN” do.
Next to a photo of them embracing, she wrote: “STEN – Hen Party Crasher @andytcarroll,” suggesting Carroll may be about to start his stag do in the same location.
Billi flew back to the UK on Monday morning leaving Carroll and his mates behind.
On the way to her hen party her pals got her to dress up in a Newcastle United strip, with signs saying “Mrs Carroll to be . . . ” as they got on to the bus to take them to the airport.
Pictured eating McDonald’s food she wrote: “What a way to end the best weekend ever . . . #whentoon becomeone.”
Billi and her pals made the most of her final holiday before marrying Carroll. She shared a series of snaps from her time in Dubai with her closest friends.
Carroll’s stag party including the girls was 15-strong. He was staying at the swish Fairmont Palms resort where rooms average £500 a night.
In January Billi revealed she had chosen her wedding dress from Brown’s Brides, a boutique popular with the girlfriends of top-flight footballers.
Her bridesmaids will include sister Giorgie, her stepdaughter Emilie-Rose Carroll, and former Towie star Shelby Tribble.
Billi asked them to be part of her bridal party at a lavish bash last year.
Carroll said meeting Billi and starting a family with her had changed his life for the better. Speaking in 2019 he said: “I met my missus, and we’ve got four kids living at home now.
“We’ve got animals. We’ve got responsibilities. There’s no more behaviour like it was, you know.
“I was stupid, I was young, and I was carried away with the lifestyle that I had.
“Now it’s completely different. I’m actually a dad. I’ve grown up, and got responsibilities, so . . . I’ve got a purpose.”
Billi found fame on Towie in 2011 but quit two years later to become a yoga teacher. She started up her own studio, Hot Yoga Essex, in 2013 but later stepped back and now teaches there occasionally.
Carroll joined West Brom in January after a spell at Reading following his release from Newcastle in the summer of 2021.
He made 15 Championship appearances for West Brom.
