But living in London, he faced the “extortionate” price for an anytime train return to Cumbria and so found an alternative.
He got a 6.45am tram from near his Crystal Palace home in South London to East Croydon for £2.50 and from there a train to Gatwick for £5.90.
Jack then boarded a £10 Ryanair flight to Dublin at 9.30am, and enjoyed a pint of Guinness there before hoping on the airline’s Dublin to Manchester flight at 1.50pm, costing £7.80.
His 11-hour trek was completed with a final train from Manchester Airport to Barrow for £6.50 at 3.30pm.

Writer Jack’s efforts were followed on social media by team officials and he was asked to give a pre-match talk to the League 2 Donny players — although they lost 2-0.
Jack also visited Green’s Bakers in Barrow-in-Furness, which features in his book on football grub, The Great Pie Revolt.
He said: “There was no way I was paying £389. The last stretch seemed to take forever but it was worth it — I don’t follow them for the wins.”
