Ten Hag is said to have “ripped the United set-up apart” criticising mainly the scouting and recruitment policy.
The club has spent around £1billion on new players in the nine years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but is in a worse state now than during the last three decades.
United officials initially took a few days to digest what Ten Hag told them but concluded that, rather than be put out, they were impressed by his frank assessment and his vision for the club.
As revealed by SunSport, the club had already made him their No 1 target after an in-depth dossier was compiled on all the top candidates for the United job.

United are likely to miss out on the Champions League and maybe even European football altogether.
And that could severely hamper the club’s spending power this summer.
They have faith, however, that Ten Hag can get the best out of what is already a talented, if under-performing, squad.

Bale, who was named on the bench for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea, will leave the Bernabeu when his contract expires this summer.
The Wales captain is desperate to lead his country to a first World Cup since 1958 and he inspired a 2-1 triumph with a sensational double over Austria to book a play-off final spot in June against Scotland or Ukraine.
But Page has confirmed Bale, 32, will play on with the prospect of facing England, Iran and the USA if the Dragons reach the Qatar finals.

Page told The Athletic: “I’m absolutely appalled by it.
“I know Gareth well now and a lot of people don’t see what he does off the pitch, the donations he made to the NHS recently, to a hospital in Cardiff — a considerable amount of money.
“He doesn’t get credit for that because he doesn’t shout about it and people don’t hear about it. He keeps it to himself.
“That parasite comment made my blood boil. I don’t like that. That’s not the Gareth Bale who is the captain of our country, who represents us. And he never will be that.”
Page’s own future is in limbo as the Football Association of Wales wait for the outcome of manager Ryan Giggs’ domestic violence trial in August.
The 41-cap defender has been in caretaker charge for 21 matches and has lost just four of those since Giggs was arrested in November 2020.
Giggs remains under contract with the FAW until the end of Wales’ World Cup campaign but ex-Wales striker John Hartson last month said Page should be given the Wales job full-time if they qualify for the World Cup – regardless of the trial in Manchester.
Page is aware that the FAW are in a legal bind until Giggs’ court case is resolved.
But he said: “It’s the uncertainty of football, unfortunately.
“It’s out of my control — if we’d not beaten Austria, the day after I’d have been unemployed. If we don’t win this game in June, my contract is up.
“It’s difficult for the Association because of Ryan’s case. All I can do is control what I can control. At this moment I’ve a group of lads who enjoy coming on camp, who enjoy playing for me.
“I’m having the time of my life and we’re winning games of football. What the powers that be at the FAW decide to do with that is up to them.”
When asked how Giggs was about Page stepping up to replace him and lead Wales to Euro 2020, the ex-Watford and Sheffield United centre-back replied: “Ryan was fully supportive, absolutely.
“It was the build-up to the Euros and there had to be a time when there was a cut-off, for Ryan’s sake, for the players, the public. We had a major tournament and we all needed to know what’s going on.
“On May 1 there was a decision made that I was the manager for the Euros and then the World Cup qualifiers.

THE final deal over the Olympic Stadium was a disgrace and should never have been sanctioned.
Put simply, West Ham were allowed to sell their own ground to developers and keep the proceeds.
In return for a 99-year lease, they contributed £15m to the cost of the stadium — but by that time the cost, plus the conversion, was probably in excess of £700m.
They were charged £2.5m per year as rental but the Olympic Park Legacy Company was responsible for all stewarding, policing and pitch upkeep.

So West Ham were effectively given a free rental.
It was the deal of the century and my dog could have struck a better one.
I told Boris Johnson, then London Mayor, it was a terrible deal for the taxpayer.

Time will tell, but every time I read about the London Stadium, I know I was right.
The operators of the stadium were soon in financial trouble as an arrangement that so favoured tenants West Ham was untenable.
The athletics track is still there but is covered by an inane seating configuration that takes days to install.
It isn’t commercially viable.
Despite everything, I bear no malice towards West Ham.
In 2021, West Ham announced the sale of 27 per cent of the club to Czech billionaire, Daniel Kretinsky, for around £180m, valuing the club at £700m.
Some way above the less than £100million joint chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan reportedly paid.
A huge part of this is surely attributable to the acquisition of the London Stadium.
Part of me wants to congratulate the shrewd Sullivan, Gold and vice-chair Karren Brady; another part of me thinks all of us, as taxpayers, have been royally ripped off.

“They don’t want to read it, they don’t believe in it.
“As the old saying goes, ‘Actions speak louder than words’. United need a manager who is told to build upwards.
“There is money but there needs to be a proper structure rather than the balsa wood one that’s there at this moment.
“You’ll have to look at getting in younger, enthusiastic players who want to play for the club — but you cannot just chuck a load of money at it.”
‘TOXIC ATMOSPHERE’
Parker continued: “It’s a case of getting a manager in who has the discipline to coach, to make great players even greater.
“Someone who can coach average players and make them good players.
“At the moment, if any player has a good, honest agent, he’ll say this is the wrong time to go to Manchester United.
“The moment you get there the onus will be on you, you’ve got to deliver straight away.
“It becomes a toxic atmosphere in the dressing room when people are pulling one way and others pulling the other. It’s a difficult place to go to.
“You cannot suddenly go out, get rid of a load and then bring a load in.

And although he believes the £50million deal United did with Crystal Palace in June 2019 is too high, Parker admires the way the full-back has not misbehaved in this time of adversity and struggle.
The two-time Premier League winner added: “Man Utd did over pay for him. I feel really, really sorry for him because the man loves to defend.
