FA to probe Ciaron Brown’s phone, texts & social media amid suspicious betting investigation in Oxford clash vs Arsenal

It was reported the FA were made aware with evidence presented to them after full-time.
And that evidence is said to include WhatsApp messages claiming Brown would definitely be booked during the match.
The Northern Ireland left-back, 24, was cautioned in the 59th minute after fouling Eddie Nketiah and tussling with Fabio Vieira.
Earlier on in the match, which Arsenal won 3-0, he escaped punishment for pulling down Gunners pair Bukayo Saka and catching Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Now according to the Daily Mail, the FA have the power to interview all related parties and access to their devices.
It is said they want to start by examining Brown’s phone to review calls, texts and his social media.
Some supporters have claimed to the Mail they won thousands of pounds with Brown’s second-half yellow card with odds of 8-1.
And there were suggestions that even a number of Arsenal fans celebrated their winnings when he was cautioned – although there is no suggestion they were involved in any criminal activity.

However, some bookmakers have so far refused to pay out due to the alleged suspicious volume of bets on the market in the hours building up to kick off which prompted the odds to drop to 7-2.
Some experts believe the market was overpriced for a League One defender to get booked against the attack of the Premier League leaders and punters took advantage.
However, others claim the betting pattern is questionable and should be investigated fully.
Oxford said: “‘Oxford United can confirm that they have been made aware of a specific allegation of irregular betting around our Emirates FA Cup game against Arsenal on Monday evening,
“The club will co-operate fully with any investigation and while this is ongoing, we are unable to make any further comment.” More

Cristiano Ronaldo BANNED from Al-Nassr clash tomorrow as FA ban for smashing Everton fan’s phone comes back to haunt him

CRISTIANO RONALDO has been BANNED from making his debut for Al-Nassr tomorrow by the English Football Association. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, is now the highest-paid sportsperson ever after he signed a lucrative £173million-a-year deal with the Saudi Pro League club.

Ronaldo, who was released by Manchester United last month after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, arrived in Riyadh on Monday and was greeted by a large group of adoring fans.
The forward then underwent his medical on Tuesday ahead of his official unveiling, which took place at Al-Nassr’s home stadium – Mrsool Park – and he later joined his new team-mates in his first training session.
Al-Nassr were hoping to hand the Portuguese star his big debut tomorrow having sold-out all of their 28,000 seats for their clash with Al Ta’ee.
However, he has been told he suspended due to the punishment dished out by the FA after he slammed an Everton supporter’s phone out of their hand.
    READ MORE ON CRISTIANO RONALDO
Ronaldo received a two-game ban and was fined by the FA in November following the incident with the autistic fan at Goodison Park in April and did not feature for the Red Devils again.
Ronaldo, who was walking down the tunnel, was cautioned by Merseyside Police after he shoved the young boy’s phone out of his hand after Everton had beaten United 1-0 at Goodison Park.

He later issued an apology via social media for his “outburst” and issued an invite for the supporter to be his guest for a game at Old Trafford “as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship”.
He wrote: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing.

“Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.
“I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.”
But the 14-year-old Jake – who has autism – declined the forward’s offer and refused to accept his apology.
Due to the break for the World Cup, Ronaldo was unable to serve his suspension before his explosive United exit and now that ban will carry on to his new club.
And that effectively bars Al-Nassr from playing their new talisman until they have completed two competitive matches that he is available for.
Article 12.1 of Fifa’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players says: “Any disciplinary sanction of up to four matches or up to three months that has been imposed on a player by the former association but not yet (entirely) served by the time of the transfer shall be enforced by the new association at which the player has been registered in order for the sanction to be served at domestic level.”
The FA clarified that he must serve his suspension even if he moved abroad in their written reasons when they imposed the ban days after his high-profile interview with Morgan.
They wrote: “We note the Player has participated in a recently published interview in which he has criticised MUFC. We know not what effect that may nor will have on his future with that club nor whether it will take disciplinary action in respect thereof. The suspension we have imposed must have effect.
“In other words, it applies to MUFC’s first team competitive matches for which he is eligible for selection. Should he leave MUFC before it completes two first team competitive matches the balance of the suspension will apply to any new club he should join.

After tomorrow’s match, Al-Nassr are not back in action until Saturday 14 January in a derby against Al-Shabab.
They then face Ettifaq at home on January 21 – which now looks set to be Ronaldo’s first match. More

PLAYERS and fans last night begged Gareth Southgate to stay on as England manager. As he arrived back in the UK from Qatar amid World Cup heartache, he said he will “reflect and review” his position.

But it sparked a huge outpouring of support for Southgate to lead the Three Lions to Euro 2024 victory in Germany in 18 months.
Midfielder Declan Rice said: “I really hope he stays.”
But as dejected players and staff prepared to fly home, a huge swelling of support was growing for Southgate to stay on.
England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire hailed the Three Lions’ boss as “amazing”.
    Read More on Gareth Southgate
He said: “I’m sure if you asked every player in the team they wouldn’t be able to speak highly enough of him.”
Ex-England keeper Peter Shilton believes the 52-year-old gaffer can end the men’s 56-year wait for a trophy.
He said: “Southgate must stay on as England manager. We have the basis of a team that will eventually win a big trophy. The future looks bright. Keep the faith.”
Southgate’s young guns outplayed the French world champions at the Al Bayt Stadium but were punished at key moments — while Harry Kane’s uncharacteristic penalty miss late on sealed their fate.

Southgate — who has led England to a World Cup semi and a Euros final — is under contract until December 2024 but will now have talks with the FA over his future.
He refused to commit to staying on for the difficult Euro 2024 campaign — where our first qualifier will be in March against our 2020 conquerors Italy.
He said: “Whenever I’ve finished these tournaments I’ve needed time to make the correct decision.
“Emotionally you go through so many different feelings and the energy that it takes through these tournaments is enormous.
He’s achieved incredible, incredible things for his country. He’s been in the semi-finals, and he’s been in the finals. He’s got to do it again because there are players there, younger players, to take us forward.Paul Parker
“I want to make the right decision, whatever that is for the team, for England, the FA. I think it is right to take time to do that.”
Paul Parker, an Italia 90 England star, last night added to the chorus of support for him to stay.
He said: “Gareth Southgate’s going to go back, and he will want to reflect on what happened, but he’s got to be there for the next tournament — he has to be.
“He’s achieved incredible, incredible things for his country. He’s been in the semi-finals, and he’s been in the finals. He’s got to do it again because there are players there, younger players, to take us forward.”
Former England manager Sam Allardyce said: “I’d be surprised if he’s not carrying on for at least the next two years. There’s nothing better as a manager than looking at a team and saying, ‘I have a very, very good squad and I have a very good team at international level’.
“Every manager wants to work with the best and I think he’s the best England has had for many, many years.
“More young lads are coming through, so we are getting better and hopefully more resilient.
“And in the end, hopefully, we can clinch a tournament.”
Emotionally you go through so many different feelings and the energy that it takes through these tournaments is enormous. I want to make the right decision, whatever that is for the team, for England, the FA. I think it is right to take time to do that.Gareth Southgate
Man United and England legend Gary Neville wants him to remain even after his current contract ends.
He said: “I would love Gareth to stay on for another two years. I’d love him to stay on beyond that, whether it be actually as the coach or whether it be in a role in the FA in the future.”
Fans also pleaded for Southgate to stay after the defeat to France, while Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio was coming under mounting criticism.
John Jackson, a 59-year-old retired joiner from Gateshead, said: “We were by far the better team against France and would have won if it wasn’t for one kick of the ball and a dodgy ref.
“This England team is still a work in progress but there’s only one man who can lead us to victory in the Euros — and that man is Gareth Southgate.”
England Supporters’ Band trumpeter John Hemmingham, 59, said: “It would be a disaster if we lost him now. We’ve just outplayed the world champions and don’t need a new broom to come in and sweep away all the good work he’s done.”
Sun and TalkTV star Piers Morgan added: “Could anyone else have done better with this (very good) squad of players? I don’t think so.”
Meanwhile, Maguire risked a fine for blasting the ref, who refused two England penalty appeals and ignored a string of French fouls. He said: “It was really, really poor.”
Southgate was seen chatting with Kieran Trippier as the players left yesterday while Jude Bellingham, Rice and Jack Grealish waved and gave the thumbs-up to fans.
Kane was nowhere to be seen as the rest boarded a bus to the airport.

Harry Kane defies last-ditch bid by World Cup chiefs to stop him wearing rainbow ‘One Love’ armband

HARRY Kane today defied a last-ditch bid by World Cup chiefs to stop him wearing a rainbow “One Love” armband. His team-mate Eric Dier also became the first England player to speak out on Qatar controversies, calling stadium worker deaths “terrible”.

Fifa’s rattled chief Gianni Infantino had earlier launched into a bizarre defence of the World Cup, which kicks off tomorrow afternoon after a succession of cock-ups.
Three Lions captain Kane will sport its anti-discrimination armband when England play Iran tomorrow after the FA rejected a late Fifa alternative yesterday.
In its latest startling move, Fifa chiefs unveiled its own “approved” armbands including one emblazoned with: “NoDiscrimination.”
But the FA hit back: “We respect the Fifa armband but are committed to the One Love armband and intend to wear it.”

Kane, 29, has worn the rainbow band for the past two England games “to send a message against discrimination of any kind”.
It promotes gay rights but is not directly aimed at anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Qatar, where being gay can still be punished by death.
A Three Lions source said last night: “Fifa will be furious but we have no intention of changing course now – particularly when the alternative is being offered so late in the day.
“Our message is clear and will remain the same.”
    Most read in The Sun
The One Love campaign is also being backed by the captains of Holland, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said a request had been sent for permission to wear the armband but Fifa did not respond.
He went on: “I think there’s a possibility that we might be fined.
“And if we are, then we’ll pay the fine. We think it’s really important to show our values.”
Fifa’s alternative will feature a range of slogans for different rounds, including BringTheMoves and FootballUnitesTheWorld.
Meanwhile, Spurs defender Dier, 28, criticised Qatar’s shameful record on migrant builders after more than 6,500 were reported to have died constructing stadia.
He said: “A lot of things have happened that are disappointing … what has happened with the building of the stadiums. It is a terrible situation.”
It came after Fifa supremo Infantino launched into a wild defence of Qatar’s already calamitous tournament.
Fifa has been slammed for a sudden stadium beer ban, chaotic organisation plus mounting fury over Qatar’s human rights record.
And Infantino began yesterday by rambling: “Today I have strong feelings. Today I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel African, I feel gay, I feel disabled, I feel a migrant worker.”
Swiss-Italian Infantino – who has now moved to live in Qatar – then accused the West of “hypocrisy” over human rights.
In an extraordinary tirade which lasted for nearly an hour, Infantino, 52, said: “I am European. For what we have been doing for 3,000 years around the world, we should be apologising for the next 3,000 years before giving moral lessons.”
The bald bigwig bizarrely cited his own discrimination experiences after being bullied as a boy for having red hair and freckles.
He also defended Fifa’s decision in 2010 to let Qatar host the World Cup. He said: “This one-sided moral lesson is just hypocrisy. I wonder why no one recognises the progress made here since 2016.
“It is not easy to take the critics of a decision that was made 12 years ago. Qatar is ready, it will be the best World Cup ever.”
He was backed by pop star Robbie Williams who will perform during the World Cup.
He said: “If we’re not condoning human rights abuses anywhere, then it would be the shortest tour the world has ever known: I wouldn’t even be able to perform in my own kitchen.”
However Infantino was last night blasted by campaigners.
Robbie de Santos from gay right group Stonewall said: “LGBTQ+ people in Qatar are criminalised and persecuted for simply existing and cannot compromise who they are.
    Read More on The Sun
“These comments serve only to trivialise the very real suffering and oppression faced on a daily basis by LGBTQ+ Qataris.”
Amnesty International said: “If Fifa is to salvage anything from this tournament, it must announce it will invest a significant part of the $6billion it will make to compensate workers and their families.”
PM SUPPORT FOR 3 LIONSRISHI Sunak has backed Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions to go “all the way” in the World Cup.
The PM said ahead of Monday’s opening game with Iran: “I know our boys will do us proud and I’ll be cheering them on all the way.”
Mr Sunak also celebrated the fact Wales are appearing at the tournament for the first time since 1958.
He said: “To have two home nation teams qualify for the tournament is a big win for the domestic game.” More

Underworld crooks who stole the 1966 World Cup finally unmasked – but did Britain’s most powerful men let them off?

THE two villains suspected of masterminding the theft of the World Cup in 1966 have remained under the radar for 56 years. But as Gareth Southgate and his England squad prepare to bring it home again, The Sun unmasks the crooks who attempted one of the past century’s most notorious thefts.

We can reveal how crooked Hatton Garden diamond dealer Gerald Sattin and underworld fence Bernard “The Pole” Makowski were strongly suspected of being architects of the plot to steal the Jules Rimet trophy.
Our investigations also expose how the pair — both now dead — escaped scot free after an apparent Downing Street deal to retrieve the cup.
Historic confidential police intelligence documents list both men as associates of Edward Betchley, the only one of the three to be convicted of the theft of the cup from a display case at an exhibition in London.
The files reveal a witness saw Sattin, then 34, at the exhibition at Westminster’s Methodist Central Hall.
    Read More on The Sun
The witness, a solicitor who asked for anonymity, urged police “to make as full an investigation into this line of inquiry as I believe this to be more than a coincidence”.
Professional thief Betchley, also now dead, was arrested four days after the theft following a ransom attempt — but the cup remained missing.
Betchley told police he was acting on behalf of a man he knew only by the nickname The Pole.
A Scotland Yard index of nicknames turned up Warsaw-born Makowski, then 40.
    Most read in Football
The World Cup remained missing for a week until it was found in a South London hedge by a dog called Pickles — and England went on to win it in July that year.
We can now reveal that before Pickles became an unlikely hero, a deal was hatched for the trophy’s return, backed by Downing Street.
It led to charges being reduced against Betchley and no action being taken against Sattin and Makowski.
A previously undisclosed document in Betchley’s police file reveals how Michael Halls, Principal Private Secretary to PM Harold Wilson, contacted the Director of Public Prosecutions over the case.
Former Scotland Yard Flying Squad commander John O’Connor said last night: “There was clearly a deal with the DPP, police and Betchley to get the cup back.
“But this document strongly suggests for the first time that it was done at the behest of Harold Wilson.
“He wouldn’t get his hands dirty, but he would let his secretary do exactly that. It was skulduggery but it was also in the public interest to get the cup back.
“It was even more important for Wilson, as it was days away from the General Election. Finding the cup could well have affected the outcome of the election.”
    ‘It was skulduggery’
The 14in, gold-plated Jules Rimet trophy of the winged goddess Nike had arrived in London under tight security on January 5, 1966.
The following day it was on display at the live TV screening of the tournament draw in West London.
Two officials from previous winners Brazil handed the cup to Fifa president Sir Stanley Rous, who quipped: “Whether they leave it here permanently or just temporarily will be seen in July.”
His words came back to haunt him when it was stolen on March 20.
The FA had loaned it to stamp company Stanley Gibbons for an exhibition.
The show was closed on the Sunday of the theft but the building was open for Methodist services.

Two thieves broke into the first-floor hall, where the cup was on display, and the theft was discovered just after noon.
With 11 days until the General Election, Harold Wilson, who believed a successful World Cup tournament could rescue the ailing Pound, told Home Secretary Roy Jenkins to call in the Yard’s top brass.
Files reveal Jenkins spoke to then Met commissioner Sir Joseph Simpson and Commander Ernie Millen, who put his best thief-taker on the case, Tommy Butler, Scourge of the Great Train Robbers.
There were two witnesses. Churchgoing Margaret Coombes spotted Betchley on the first floor at 11am and picked him out at an identity parade following his arrest.
One of the guards, Frank Hudson, spotted a second man loitering near where the World Cup was on display.
The suspect was never traced, though his description bore a striking resemblance to Makowski.
The next day, the solicitor witness, who The Sun is not naming, came forward to say he had spoken to Sattin at the exhibition.
Files show married father-of-three Sattin was questioned by police and admitted being at the exhibition.
Sattin had a taste for high living, glamorous women, luxury cars and crime.
Five years after the World Cup theft he began an 18-month affair with former Sun Page 3 model Maureen Flanagan.
Now 81, Maureen said: “I knew nothing about him being involved with stealing the World Cup. He wasn’t even a football fan.
“After we split up he was jailed for fraud and he had been to prison before he met me but it was not something he ever spoke about. All I’d say is that if you met him you’d trust him with the world — if not the World Cup.”
As police questioned Sattin they were already moving in on Betchley, a known associate of his, who had anonymously called FA chief Joe Mears the day after the theft.
He promised to send a parcel that would “be of interest”.

Two days later the lid of the World Cup was delivered with a typed ransom demand for £15,000 — around £300,000 now — for its return.
Mears rang the police and Detective Inspector Jack Buggy posed as his assistant and spoke twice to the crook by phone.
Investigators traced the second call to a phone box near Betchley’s South London home.
DI Buggy met the crook — Betchley — at Battersea Park and showed him “bundles of cash” in a briefcase — though it was mostly scraps of paper.
Former soldier and dock labourer Betchley, 47, got in DI Buggy’s car and told him to drive, but in Camberwell he got spooked and ran. He was quickly captured by Buggy.
A search for the cup at his home proved fruitless and raids on the nearby Camberwell homes of two associates, brothers Sidney and Reginald Cugullere, drew a blank.
Relatives later said the brothers had hidden the cup in a coal shed.
Betchley denied two charges of theft and also demanding money with menaces.
He told police he had been offered £500 to act as an intermediary by “The Pole”, calling the nameless figure “one of his customers”.
Two days after his arrest, magistrates bailed Betchley on a surety of £5,000, worth £100k today.
The next day Pickles found the World Cup wrapped in newspaper in the front garden of a house in Beulah Hill, Upper Norwood, South London.
His owner, Thames barge worker David Corbett, lived in a flat at the address.
He went on to claim £6,000 in insurance rewards — six times the amount England’s players each received for winning the cup.
A memo marked “confidential” and obtained by The Sun casts a further cloud of mystery around the case.

Thieves removed eight screws from a door to get into the exhibition hallCredit: PA
It stated that Harold Wilson’s PPS Michael Halls asked that an unspecified matter “be given immediate consideration . . . ” and added that it was being copied to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Then on April 12, just over a fortnight after the cup was found, the more serious offences of theft were dropped against Betchley, despite a wealth of evidence against him.
He later admitted two counts of demanding money with menaces and was jailed for two years.
Police took no further action in the case.
Ex-Flying Squad chief Mr O’Connor said: “This new information strongly suggests Sattin, Makowski, Betchley the thief and other associates were all in it together.
“Sattin planned it and used Betchley as a professional thief, probably by going through Makowski. It was a murky old world in those days and it doesn’t get much murkier than this.
“There was clearly a deal with Betchley and the police agreed by the DPP and which went through Harold Wilson’s private secretary.
“We were being embarrassed by these criminals in front of the world and they would have done anything to get the cup back. It would have soured the whole World Cup tournament if the trophy had not been found.”
The trophy went back to Brazil in 1970 when they won the World Cup in Mexico.
As three-times winners, they got to keep it permanently — though it was stolen again in 1983 and has never been found. Its replacement, the Fifa World Cup Trophy, has been awarded ever since.
After it was pinched in London, a replica was commissioned from London silversmith George Bird, who was sworn to secrecy.
The copy was sold at Sotheby’s to a mystery bidder in 1997 for £240,500 — almost 25 times its estimated value.
    Read More on The Sun
It later emerged the bidder was a representative of the FA acting on behalf of Fifa, whose secretary Sepp Blatter authorised the purchase at any price.
The copy was later given to the National Football Museum in Manchester, where it remains on display.

After handing over his mobile to the investigators, a string of the 26-year-old’s contacts on the handset have been approached.
It raises the prospect that other top-flight footballers have been questioned over claims that wagers were placed on games — in breach of strict FA rules on gambling.
Brentford ace Toney, 26, was surprisingly still picked by Gareth Southgate despite being caught up in the seven-month investigation.
He is widely expected to be named in his England squad for the World Cup in Qatar on Thursday.

But football’s integrity will be questioned if he is picked and later charged.
Sources say the ace has become “incredibly worried” the investigation could cost him his place.
One said: “Ivan isn’t stupid, he knows it doesn’t look good — even though he insists he has done nothing wrong.
“The best thing for everyone would be if the FA could clear him in time — so his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad comes down to his football.

Toney played for Northampton, Peterborough and on loan at four other EFL clubs before joining the Bees in 2020.
FA rules ban any active participants from gambling on any football-related issues, with Kieran Trippier receiving a 10-week ban in December 2020 for passing on information ahead of his move from Spurs to Atletico Madrid.
But while Toney may face charges if FA investigators believe he has broken the regulations he is currently innocent of any misconduct and will be available if Southgate wishes to select him for the tournament.
