Why Draymond Green May Soon Be the Odd Man Out at Golden State

The shadow of Green’s punch looms over the team, even as Golden State shows it still has what it takes to compete for a championship.SAN FRANCISCO — As Golden State posed in front of a banner destined for its arena’s rafters, all looked fine and well for the team. The players were beaming and dancing, flashing their new championship rings toward a photographer. The Tuesday evening scene was a déjà vu of sorts. Golden State has gone through this pomp and circumstance four times in the last eight seasons as part of a ceremony to celebrate winning an N.B.A. title by raising a championship banner. Tribute video. Inspirational music. Cheering fans.“I’ve never had a bad ring night,” Golden State Coach Steve Kerr said. “They’re all awesome.”Just ignore the reality show that aired on TNT hours earlier starring and produced by Golden State’s Draymond Green, who in the show briefly addressed punching his younger teammate Jordan Poole in the face in an incident that threatened to rupture the franchise on the doorstep of the season.Oh, that. Awkward.Golden State began its pursuit of a fifth championship for its current dynasty by dismantling the Los Angeles Lakers, 123-109, on Tuesday, easily dispatching a team with no shortage of its own drama and championship aspirations. Golden State’s Stephen Curry, the most valuable player of last season’s finals, effortlessly dropped 33 points. But his team began the season under the shadow of Green’s swing at Poole at a practice, a video of which was obtained by TMZ.Golden State’s Jordan Poole, right, had 12 points and 7 assists off the bench in Tuesday night’s win against the Lakers.John G Mabanglo/EPA, via ShutterstockAnd in part because of Green, the Golden State dynasty — at least as the world has known it — faces the potential of great upheaval.Golden State has long been defined by the greatness of Curry. But it has also been marked by a rare continuity. This is Kerr’s ninth season as head coach, the third-longest tenure behind that of San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich and Miami’s Erik Spoelstra. Green, Curry and Klay Thompson have played together for more than a decade. Bob Myers, the team president, has been with the franchise since 2011.Green’s value to the team is undoubtable: He can defend all five positions at an elite level, and he is an excellent passer, particularly adept at finding Curry in the right spots. He had 5 assists Tuesday to go with 4 points and 5 rebounds. At 32, he has also been known as a leader on and off the floor. Younger players like Moses Moody, James Wiseman and, at one point, Poole have spoken about the encouragement they received from Green when they were struggling on the court.Without Green, there is no Golden State dynasty. He has spent his whole career in Golden State and has a player option after this year worth roughly $27.5 million. Green is a four-time All-Star who, according to The Athletic, believes he’s deserving of a maximum contract extension. And in many situations, this would be a no-brainer, both as a reward for his past service to Golden State and in recognition of his current abilities. But his role as a leader is in question after what happened with Poole this month. He has a reputation for impulsive behavior like the Poole incident, yelling at coaches and teammates, and racking up silly technicals. One wonders if Myers and Joe Lacob, the team’s owner, may look at Green entering the twilight of his career and wish him the best playing somewhere else.Golden State has long been defined by Stephen Curry’s greatness. He had 33 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists Tuesday.Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesThey have locked in the 23-year-old Poole for years to come, recently signing him to a four-year extension worth up to $140 million, according to ESPN.Poole was diplomatic Tuesday when asked whether the rift with Green had healed.“It was ring night and that’s really what we were focused on,” Poole said. “Finishing the first game. Huge win against a really good team.”Golden State also recently signed forward Andrew Wiggins, 27, to a pricey extension after he proved crucial to the team’s finals win last year and cemented himself as a building block for the team’s future. Not signed to an extension so far: Green.Golden State may be liable for almost $500 million in salaries and luxury tax next year. To put that in perspective, the minimum team salary for this season is about $111 million. Lacob has been willing to spend more than any other team in the N.B.A. to keep the team’s core together, but from a cold business perspective, Green soon may be the odd man out.Golden State has cited the organization’s strong culture as a reason for its success. But professional sports have long been a haven where bad behavior is overlooked for players who contribute to wins, which perhaps explains why Golden State chose to fine but not suspend Green for the punch. That is, however, a short-term solution to keep the peace. And Green, who won the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2016-17, certainly contributes to wins. On Tuesday, his ball-hawking skills made life difficult for Anthony Davis, the Lakers’ star big man, and offensively, Green flashed his versatility. But the shadow of his punch still looms.Green, in publicly apologizing for the incident on Oct. 8, told reporters that the he regretted the embarrassment his punch caused Poole and his family. Yet he chose to air the video again Tuesday in a self-serving “all-access” show called “The Countdown” on TNT, which also broadcast Golden State’s game. He turned the incident into profit and a glossily produced opportunity for image rehabilitation. He addressed the Poole incident by saying that he hadn’t paid much attention to the social media backlash. He also tried to use the show to reassert himself as a leader of the team.“You can’t change the events that happened, but we can control what happens moving forward and that’s where we are,” Green said straight into the camera during the segment. “And myself as a leader of this team, it’s on me to make sure we’re headed that way.”Golden State’s Andre Iguodala, left, Curry, Green and Klay Thompson have won four championships together.Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesWhatever becomes of Green, Golden State is strongly positioned for the future. Aside from Poole and Wiggins, young talents with like Wiseman, Moody and Jonathan Kuminga are waiting in the wings for more playing time (and their own contract extensions) without the drama that Green brings. That Golden State faces upheaval is not the same thing as Golden State facing an end. This isn’t the first time that the team’s run has seemed seriously threatened. As a result of injuries, Golden State was among the worst teams in the league the two seasons before last year, which left many wondering if they could recapture their greatness. That didn’t escape Curry.“I heard it back in 2019,” Curry told The Mercury News in an interview published Tuesday. “I heard during the pandemic. We hear it a little louder now because we won again. We would have heard it louder had we not won. Nobody has any idea what’s going to happen.”As Tuesday night showed, the team is positioned for another ring chase. Poole and Green showed they can coexist on the court: Poole slipped Green a slick pass in the second quarter for an easy layup. But if Golden State hosts another banner-raising ceremony next fall, it may be the last one featuring Green. More

Fletcher and Ward did not miss much during their brief absence as Leicester and Palace continued to play out a rather drab goalless draw.
The Foxes were searching for their second Premier League win of the campaign – a victory which would have seen them climb out of the relegation zone.
And Brendan Rodgers’ men came close through James Maddison and Patson Daka.
But ultimately Patrick Vieira’s visitors earned themselves a point, with Odsonne Edouard almost snatching all three but for a superb stop from Danny Ward. More

The build-up show was due to detail the two fights their fathers, Chris Sr and Nigel, had more than 30 years ago, before throwing forward to their sons’ bout this weekend.
Now though, the BBC have replaced the programme – which was due to air at 10.40pm this evening – with period drama Victoria and Abdul.
It is not yet known whether the fight will go ahead at The 02 on Saturday night.
The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed on Wednesday that they are “prohibiting” it from taking place.

However, Eubank Jr has insisted he still wants it to happen despite reservations over the failed test.
A VADA test found an adverse finding in one of Benn’s results, with traces of the fertility drug clomifene discovered.
But, while Eubank Jr denied Benn’s claim the pair had spoken on the phone to straighten out the issue, he remains keen to face his British rival.
He said: “I am staying out of the politics, I dont know whats going on. I have heard the news, all I can do is be a professional and be ready to fight.

“I am ready, and as news unfolds we will deal with it as it goes on.
“I am prepared, I have done my job. It is now in the hands of promoters and governing bodies to make this fight happen. All I can do is be ready.
“Of course there are concerns [about the failed test]. I can’t really say too much. I am ready, I am a clean fighter, I have cut the weight, I am ready to go.”
Meanwhile, Benn has protested his innocence just hours after news of his failed test emerged.
He told DAZN: “I’ve not committed any violations. I’ve not been suspended. So as far as I’m concerned the fight’s still going ahead.
“I’ve spoken to Chris [Eubank Jr] personally and we both want the fight to go ahead.
“We’ve both taken medical and legal advice, and as I said, we want the fight to happen for the fans.
“I’ve signed up to every voluntary anti-doping testing there is under the sun.
“Throughout my whole career I’ve been tested. All my UK tests have come back negative throughout my whole career, I’ve never had any issues before.
“Even in the lead-up to this fight, my tests have come up negative, you know, so my team will find out as to why there’s been an initial adverse finding in my test.

“But as I said, as far as I’m concerned the fight is still going ahead, I’m a clean athlete and we’ll get to the bottom of this.

Rachel Nichols Joins Showtime After Contentious ESPN Exit

Nichols was pulled from the air at ESPN last year after The New York Times reported on disparaging comments that Nichols, who is white, had made about a Black colleague. One year after the high-profile canceling of her television show, Rachel Nichols is back.Showtime Sports announced Friday that Nichols would be joining the premium television network to contribute to its basketball coverage, with her first appearance coming on the “All the Smoke” podcast Friday. For five years, Nichols was the face of ESPN’s N.B.A. coverage, sitting down for interviews with big stars, covering the playoffs and hosting its daily basketball show, “The Jump.” But she was pulled from the air and her show was canceled last year after The New York Times reported on disparaging comments Nichols had made about Maria Taylor, who at the time was her colleague at ESPN.In a conversation with an adviser to the Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James that was unknowingly recorded in July 2020, Nichols, who is white, said that Taylor, who is Black, had been chosen to host 2020 N.B.A. finals coverage instead of her because ESPN executives were “feeling pressure” on diversity.Shortly after The Times’s report, Taylor left ESPN for NBC, where she hosts “Football Night in America,” among other duties. ESPN replaced “The Jump” with a similar daily show called “NBA Today,” which is hosted by Malika Andrews. On the “All the Smoke” podcast — which is hosted by the former N.B.A. players Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, who worked with Nichols on “The Jump” — Nichols made her most extensive comments yet on her departure from ESPN, though she revealed little that had not already been said or reported.Nichols said that the job of hosting N.B.A. finals coverage had been written into her contract with ESPN. But as the company was preparing for the unprecedented airing of the rest of the regular season and the playoffs from a bubble environment near Orlando, Fla., because of the coronavirus pandemic, she was asked instead to be a sideline reporter so that Taylor could host finals studio coverage.“They stressed it was my choice; they weren’t telling me to do this, because it was in my contract,” Nichols said on the podcast. “But they were putting a lot of pressure on me. I was being told, ‘Well, you’re not a team player.’ Which any woman in business knows is code, right?”An ESPN spokesman declined to comment last year when asked whether hosting the finals was in Nichols’s contract. The spokesman declined to comment when asked again Friday. Generally, most ESPN contracts for on-air commentators are what are known as “pay or play” contracts, meaning ESPN has the right to take anybody off the air for any reason, but the company must continue to pay them.Nichols was inadvertently recorded from her hotel room near Orlando. A camera in her room was left on after she finished taping for a show, feeding its recording to a server at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Conn. Her conversation came as the country was roiled by racial justice protests after the police in Minneapolis killed George Floyd, and right after The Times reported that many Black employees at ESPN felt they were harmed by racism at the company. On the recording, the adviser Nichols was speaking to, Adam Mendelsohn, who is white, said he was “exhausted” by Black Lives Matter and Nichols laughed.Maria Taylor left ESPN and joined NBC, where she has covered the Olympics and hosts “Football Night in America.”Nick Cammett/Getty ImagesOn the podcast Friday, Nichols said she believed that ESPN was asking her to help fix employee and audience complaints about a lack of diversity in a way they would not have asked a man to do. “Do you think ESPN would ever say to Rece Davis: ‘Hey, we want to give Maria this opportunity. You go be the sideline reporter?’” Nichols said, referring to Davis, a white man who hosts “College GameDay.” “They don’t say that to men.”Nichols added that she attempted to set up a meeting to apologize to Taylor after Taylor learned of her comments but that Taylor would not meet with her.“I feel sorry that any of this touched Maria Taylor,” Nichols said. “She’s a fellow woman in the business. It wasn’t her fault what was going on.”Nichols, without naming anyone, said she thought “people who had bad feelings” held on to the hotel room recording, then leaked it to the media for “leverage with their own situations.”It is not immediately clear how big of a role Nichols will have at Showtime, which does not have rights to show N.B.A. games. According to a statement from Showtime, Nichols will “contribute to multiple programs and projects from Showtime Basketball across multiple platforms.” More

A jam-packed crowd was in attendance at Wembley to see Gareth Southgate’s team in action.
However, the rest of England’s supporters unable to get to the national stadium were tuning into Channel 4.
But just minutes into the first half of the game those that were watching via the Channel 4 website and app were no longer able to watch as both went down.
Viewers online and on the All4 app were greeted with an unwelcome error message.

The broadcaster replaced ITV for coverage of Three Lions matches this year.
But frustrated viewers took to Twitter to vent their anger at being unable to watch Southgate’s men in action.
One fan moaned: “Fancy sorting your app out so we can watch the game?”
Another wrote: “Let’s just hope Channel 4 hasn’t got the rights to any of the World Cup games. All4 can’t handle it.”

And another joked: “Channel 4 certainly made a difference with English football. Now nobody can watch it!”

Alex Scott reveals she ‘briefly turned to drink’ as ex-England star and BBC presenter ‘drowned out’ racism and trolling

ALEX SCOTT has revealed the torment she went through after being racially abused and trolled online. The former Arsenal and England star, 37, has carved out an incredibly successful career as a broadcaster, presenting events such as Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Scott has opened up about the impact racism and trolling has had on herCredit: PA
Scott has also taken over from Dan Walker as the host of Football Focus.
But her success has coincided with sickening racial abuse as trolls have singled her out on social media.
And Scott admits it has had a major impact, leading to her “briefly turning to drink” after the Olympics last year.
Speaking to The Times, she said: “I can slip into dark places. And once I slip into dark places, I don’t stop.

“I loved being out at the Olympics, but afterwards I realised the mad pressure that I’d put on myself to take everything – the trolling, the racism, Lord Digby Jones.”
The reference to Jones relates to a tweet he sent accusing her of negatively impacting BBC’s Olympic coverage with her East End accent.
He said: “Enough! I can’t stand it any more! Alex Scott spoils a good presentational job on the BBC Olympics Team with her very noticeable inability to pronounce her ‘g’s at the end of a word.
“Competitors are NOT taking part, Alex, in the fencin, rowin, boxin, kayakin, weightliftin & swimmin.”
    Most read in Football
The criticism understandably affected Scott, who was even forced to deal with death threats.
She continued: “That was at a level that I was scared for my life. I was scared to leave my house to even go to the shop.
“That’s the stage that we’d got to – that, oh my gosh, someone black might be replacing a national treasure could cause such hatred.”
Scott is preparing to release her memoir “How (Not) to Be Strong” in which she discusses the harrowing abuse she suffered as a child at the hands of her father.
Scott’s dad frequently beat her mother, scenes the ex-footballer recounts in frightening detail.
“I felt helpless,” she said. “All I could do was lie there and pray my mum would be alive in the morning.”
Yet Scott, who has not spoken to her dad since he text her asking for Strictly Come Dancing tickets in 2019, admirably insists she did not write the book to punish him.
She said: “I didn’t write this book to shame my dad – actually, I’ve forgiven my dad.

“I take lessons from what’s happened to me. I wouldn’t be the person I am without all this.
“At football, you don’t show emotion. You’re tough; you get on with things. You don’t talk about stuff. You roll your socks up and do your best.”
