The Reds did win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup last season but lost in the Champions League final and fell just short in the Premier League.
Van Dijk managed to bring that leadership to the international team where Holland scrapped their way into the quarter-finals.
Despite being 2-0 down to Argentina with eight minutes to go, the Netherlands managed to take a fiercely-contested game all the way to penalties before losing 4-3 on spotkicks. More

Huge Drive to Survive star reveals he never watched a single episode of hit Netflix show ahead of 2023 F1 season

NETFLIX’S new instalment of their hit F1 show “Drive to Survive” airs on Friday but one of the stars of the series has never watched a single episode.Haas boss Guenther Steiner was the key character in the first series, which has been responsible for helping propel F1’s success across the globe.
Drive to Survive is set to be released on Friday, February 24
Haas boss Guenther Steiner has gained popularity from the seriesCredit: Splash
The sport’s popularity is booming – three sold-out races in the US, a joint-record 23-race calendar with more circuits clambering to join along with some new teams – F1 has never had it so good.
Anyone who has watched the show will know that Steiner – and his F-word rants – can lay claim to helping boost F1’s appeal – but as he puts it, he’s still waiting for F1 to provide him with a big cheque to say thank you.
“I have never watched an episode,” he says. “In the beginning I didn’t want to watch because I don’t really enjoy watching myself.
“I also didn’t want to get influenced to change when I am doing something. If you are an actor, you learn from your mistakes.
    READ MORE IN F1
“I don’t want to be an actor because maybe everytime I see a camera, it may have an effect on how I behave.
“It sounds very complex but for me it was a very simplistic thought process and now if I start to watch it, it was OK in the beginning, so why go back and change now?”
Steiner says he jokes with F1’s CEO Stefano Domenicali and business tycoon, Greg Maffei, who is the CEO of Liberty Media CEO, who own the rights to F1, about his influence in the show.
The likeable Italian is now an icon thanks to playing himself and his popularity is staggering.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST ONLINE CASINOS FOR 2023
He added: “We always joke with Stefano and Greg but you know, they have not reached out and told me they are sending a cheque!
“Stefano has known me for 20 years and knows I am the same person and nothing has changed. It is part of what we are doing.
“But I am recognised a lot more. The strange thing is you never know when you are alone or not.
“You can be sitting somewhere and you’re thinking nobody knows you and you forget about it and then someone says your name, but it is nothing bad, especially in the States, people are well behaved and ask for a picture.
“For my family, when the first series came out, my daughter was eight and people called your name or stopped me on the street and she would ask me if I knew these guys, and I was like no, but now it is not an issue.”
Steiner says he is not shocked by just how popular the fly-on-the-wall series has been but he is surprised about how it has changed the shape of F1 commercially.
His team, and the same of others on the grid, have been able to attract sponsorship they would not have been able to after Liberty Media opened up the sport to a wider audience.
He said: “F1 gives a lot of interesting things to the fans. To the new fans, it opens it up and they are telling the story.
“F1 missed out on not telling the story. Can you imagine if it would have started up maybe 20 years ago?
“Liberty Media understood the entertainment and they came in and realised there is a bigger story to be told.
“It has been a benefit to teams. A lot of sponsors come in because they want to be seen and it has done well for all the teams.
“The big teams are not the only ones people are interested in.
Before, you only saw the big teams on TV but now on normal TV they show the smaller teams as well because people are interested in what they are doing as well.
“We have been put on the map for sponsors that we are an interesting team, even if we are not winning races yet.”
Steiner saw his team kick off pre-season testing in Bahrain on Thursday ahead of the season-opener on March 5th.
He has picked veteran Nico Hulkenberg to replace Mick Schumacher, who is now a reserve driver at Mercedes.
Steiner was also linked with a move for Daniel Ricciardo, who finds himself as a reserve at Red Bull after turning down Haas.
It seemed like a backward step for the Aussie to turn down a seat on the grid, but Steiner has no hard feelings.
He said: “Nico is settling in really well. All the interaction is as expected. There was a plan because he was an experienced person and he is giving guidance to the guys.
“As for Daniel, I am not disappointed. Everybody can take his decision. If Danny had no interest, I respect that he did not waste my time in speaking with me.
    Read More on The Sun
“I respect that fully. It was pretty clear when he did not engage that he had no interest and I did not call back to show that I was desperate so it was a fair way of dealing with it.
“I am very OK with the attitude because he did not waste my time and we can both get on like we did before.” More

From the Crazy Gang to Gazza’s tears, the seven most iconic moments of John Motson’s career as BBC legend passes away

FOOTBALL has lost its most iconic voice after John Motson passed away, aged 77.Fans across the country are mourning the legendary BBC commentator, who hung up his mic – and famous sheepskin coat – five years ago.

During his distinguished 48-year career, Motty covered ten World Cups, ten European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 200 England games.
But there are some moments that stand out more than others and will NEVER be forgotten.
Here are SunSport’s favourite memories from the ‘Voice of Football’…
You can’t fault his appetite for the game
The famous sheepskin John Motson wore at Adams Park became synonymous with the BBC legend
It was an image that became synonymous with Motty.

And was always a running joke when the weather mimicked arctic conditions.
In December 1980, Motty reported live from Adams Park before Wycombe Wanderers entertained Peterborough United.
Battling the elements, he delivered his message with aplomb and the sheepskin became a regular fixture.
His commentating was something quite poetic

Motty tapped into popular culture too.

One of the biggest Cup Final shocks of all time came when Wimbledon beat Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a Lawrie Sanchez goal in 1988.
Cue scenes of hysteria and disbelief at the final whistle and a distraught looking Kenny Dalglish as The Reds missed out on doing the double.
“The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club,” he delivered when the ref called time.
And it is a line that has gone down in history.
And he loved it when England did well

Motty confessed that his favourite match he ever commentated on was England’s 5-1 drubbing of Germany in Munich.
You could really tell too, because he took so much delight in Michael Owen grabbing a hat-trick at the Olympiastadion during the 2002 World Cup qualifiers.
He bellowed: “Ohhh, this is getting better and better and better. One, two, three for Michael Owen!”
But arguably his most famous commentary line came when he first started out
Ronnie Radford’s goal for Hereford United defined John Motson’s careerCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
It was the goal that changed Motty’s life, he admitted.
Effectively, he was on trial at the BBC and he confessed that he “hadn’t pulled up too many trees at that point.”
“What a goal, what a goal,” Motson screamed as Ronnie Radford hit a screamer for Hereford United in their famous FA Cup shock against Newcastle.
“Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford.” Motty then became a permanent voice.
    Don’t mention Brian Clough though
John Motson loved interviewing Brian Clough
Brian Clough was prickly with John Motson in a awkward interview in 1979
In 1979, the legendary Nottingham Forest manager gave Motty a particularly prickly interview.
Cloughy wasn’t happy about the BBC over-analysing the beautiful game, so he let rip on the journalist.
“I think what you do to referees is nothing short of criminal,” Cloughy told him in no uncertain terms.
Despite that, Clough and Motty always had fun jousting over the years and Motty always said he was his favourite manager to interview.

When Paul Gascoigne launched into a mistimed tackle and earned a booking that would rule him out of a possible World Cup Final appearance, we were shot to pieces.
Gazza soon got emotional on the pitch, and his Spurs colleague Gary Lineker gestured to manager Bryan Robson to keep an eye on him.
“Oh dear. Oh dear me,” Motty reasoned with the nation. “He’s going to be out of the final, if England get there.”
“Here is a moment that almost brings tears to his eyes.”
Finally, he wasn’t afraid to call it how it was

When Zinedine Zidane got sent off against Italy at the 2006 World Cup the world was stunned by what they’d seen.
The world’s greatest player threw a headbutt towards Italian defender Marco Materazzi who collapsed to the ground.
“And the referee has gone across now with his hand in his pocket,” Motty told us as we awaited the official’s decision.

“We basically all looked up to him – his diligence, his dedication, his knowledge. He was a very serious broadcaster but he was a real fun guy to be around.”
Fellow commentator Clive Tyldesley wrote on Twitter: “As a teenager I just wanted to be John Motson. Nobody else.”
Jamie Carragher said: “RIP John Motson. An absolute Legend of the game. So many of us grew up listening to this man describe the action & goals on MOTD & cup finals. Sad loss.”
While former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell wrote: “Rest in Peace John “Motty” Motson an absolute legend and gentleman.”
In 2014, Motson was diagnosed with bowel cancer and forced to miss the World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking at the time, he said: “I consider myself very lucky I was diagnosed so early that the cancer was dealt with and the positiveness came about because I wanted to get back into my normal life.
“That drive and determination was probably the most positive thing I could’ve had.”
Motson was born in Salford and began his journalistic career in Barnet – the team he supports on the Barnet Press.
He worked as a reporter between 1963 and 1967 before being hired for BBC Radio 2.
His first radio commentary was an Everton v Derby clash in December 1969.
Three years later, Motson became a household name thanks to his work on Match of the Day.
His breakthrough came during Hereford’s shock 2-1 win against Newcastle in the 1972 FA Cup replay.
Motson was only meant to cover the match for a five-minute segment but Ronnie Radford’s famous 30-yard strike meant the clash was promoted to the main game.
He famously remarked on the game: “Oh what a goal! Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford! And the crowd are on the pitch. What a tremendous shot by Ronnie Radford.”
It helped propel his career even further – with Motson going on to voice major FA Cup, European Championships and World Cup finals.
He commentated on almost 2,500 televised games in total including a record-breaking sixth World Cup final in Berlin in 2006 and his 29th FA Cup final in 2008.
Motson was famed for his often poetic commentary and encyclopaedic football knowledge during his illustrious career.
His quip at Wimbledon scuppering Liverpool’s chances of the double in 1988 became notorious.
The legend said: “The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club.”
Motson bowed out after 50 years on the final day of the 2017/18 season and was invited on to the pitch.
Then-Crystal Palace manager Roy presented him with a framed copy of the programme from his first and last matches at Selhurst Park and a crystal microphone.
He won a Bafta that year for his work and received an OBE in 2001 for services to sports broadcasting.
Motson lived in Hertfordshire with his wife Anne, who he married in 1977.
BBC director-general Tim Davie described Motson as “the voice of a footballing generation”, steering fans “through the twists and turns of FA Cup runs, the highs and lows of World Cups and, of course, Saturday nights on Match of the Day”.

He added: “Like all the greats behind the mic, John had the right words, at the right time, for all the big moments.

Garnacho, 18, has previously had a look resembling characters from Peaky Blinders.

Another fan shared an image of blonde Messi under a post of Garnacho’s new look.
However, considering Garnacho’s idol is Messi’s GOAT rival Cristiano Ronaldo, it was probably not his exact intention to draw such comparisons.
As well as fans, the new look whipped up some reaction from team-mates, including Brazilian Casemiro.
SIlver-haired team-mate Antony exposed Garnacho’s new look to the rest of the squad while in training, with Casemiro showing off his surprise.

Lewis Hamilton’s boss Toto Wolff and rival Max Verstappen slam F1’s Drive to Survive on Netflix ahead of new series

MAX VERSTAPPEN and Toto Wolff have expressed concerns over Drive to Survive with the hit series days away from its fifth season release. The fly-on-the-wall documentary series follows all 10 teams and provides fans with an insight to the drama that is missed by standard TV coverage.
Drive to Survive is widely believed to have boosted F1’s popularity among younger audiences
It has proven to be a huge hit and is often cited as a factor in F1’s popularity boom in recent years.
But the series is not everyone’s cup of tea, including those at the centre of the drama.
Verstappen, 25, initially refused to do any talking head interviews despite his boss, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, being one of the series’ main protagonists.
But the Dutchman has dropped his boycott this year despite the unflattering review he provided ahead of the fourth season’s release previously.

He said: “They faked a few rivalries which don’t really exist. So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show.
“I am not really a dramatic show kind of person, I just want facts and real things to happen.
“The problem is they will always position you in a way they want, so whatever you say, they will try to make you look reckless or trying to make you… whatever fits the story of the series.
“So I never really liked that. I prefer to just have a one-on-one interview with the person who would like to know me.”

Lewis Hamilton’s boss Wolff revealed similar misgivings last year.
He said: “It’s scary how much we let them in. You hate to see yourself in there. They create a spin to the narrative – they put scenes together that didn’t happen.
“I guess you’d say as an insider, ‘well that’s different than how it was’. But we’re creating entertainment, and that is a new dimension of entertainment.”
The most recent series of Drive to Survive followed F1’s most dramatic and explosive title race ever with Hamilton and Verstappen’s rivalry resulting in huge crashes and unprecedented last-lap drama.
The upcoming series – which is released on February 24 – will review the 2022 season which saw Verstappen dominate, Mercedes struggle and Ferrari unravel. More
