Liverpool edge closer to sealing contract extension with Naby Keita as it will be cheaper than a transfer replacement

LIVERPOOL are close to sealing an extension with Naby Keita as he enters the final year of his contract.Keita has arguably been a very rare blemish on the Reds’ near-flawless record in the past few years.

Yet Kop money men are keen to keep the Guinea midfielder, 27, despite a mixed time at Anfield since his £52.75million moves from RB Leipzig in 2018.
That is because it would cost a fortune to replace Keita in their squad and they would prefer to retain him even if he is not first choice.
Keita could be talked into staying put if the terms are right after winning every major trophy with the Reds.
He was ruled out of Liverpool’s shock opening day draw against Fulham through illness.

Keita saw pal Sadio Mane leave Anfield this summer for Bayern Munich as Jurgen Klopp shuffles his pack.
Klopp splashed a fee rising to £85m on Benfica’s Darwin Nunez to replace Mane.
And it is a move Liverpool legend Pepe Reina hailed as a game-changer heading into the new season.
Reina said: “Darwin and Mane are two great players of a certain stature.

Everton versus Chelsea match halted due to medical emergency in the stands at Goodison Park

After around three minutes, the match resumed in Merseyside and TEN minutes was later added on.
The first-half saw EIGHT extra minutes after Ben Godfrey was stretchered off following an injury.
Everton later tweeted: “We can confirm Ben Godfrey has suffered a lower leg injury and has been taken to hospital.
    “We’re all with you, @BenG0dfrey!”

Astonishingly, the game was played for almost TWO HOURS, following nearly ten minutes of additional time in each half.
Despite the extended match, only Jorginho’s penalty before the break separated the two sides.
The problems keep mounting for Frank Lampard’s Toffees, after Godfrey’s gruesome leg injury while Yerry Mina also hobbled off.
Both Lampard and Thomsd Tuchel were far from pleased with their pre-season preparations across the pond this summer.

For the Blues, a mixture of shocking results, gruelling travel and weather conditions and frustrating transfer window set-backs had Tuchel spitting feathers.
It culminated in the German’s brutal put-down of his players, admitting they were not ready for the start of the Premier League campaign and lacked physical and mental commitment.
Everton’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Minnesota, Richarlison’s £60m exit and then Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s renewed injury woe has also left Lampard pulling his hair out.

Hasim Rahman Jr ready to fight Jake Paul NEXT WEEK and claims he can make 200lb after hosting unofficial weigh in

HASIM RAHMAN JR said he is ready to fight Jake Paul NEXT WEEK – and at their original weight of 200lb. The pair of former sparring partners were due to face each other this weekend at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.
Hasim Rahman Jr said he is ready to fight Jake Paul
But a weight disagreement between the two forced the entire Madison Square Garden pay-per-view to be scrapped.
Rahman signed to fight at the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit of 200lb, despite being 16 stone in his last fight in April.
So the New York State Athletic Commission wanted to track his cut but later changed the fight weight to 205lb.
Paul then spoke out to claim Rahman refused the change and would scale no less than 215lb, prompting the MSG card to be axed.

But Rahman denied the allegations and staged a private weigh in to prove he could make the new 205lb limit.
The heavyweight actually came in at 206.6lb – nearly 2lb overweight – but called to fight Paul next week – believing he can make 200lb.
Rahman said: “The original date for this fight was August 13th, that was the original date. They moved it forward.
“Did they move it forward because they wanted to give me less time? Did they move it forward because of whatever reason? I dunno.

“But had the fight been next Saturday, I probably would have made 200. But you know, it’s unfair that he pulled the plug like that.”
Paul, 25, initially announced his boxing return for August 13 but changed it to a week earlier after signing to fight Tommy Fury, 23.
Although Fury was forced out amid a US visa issue, which caused Rahman to step in.
After the NYSAC changed the weight to 205lb, Rahman had until 11.59pm to sign a deal for a new agreement.
He accused Paul of cancelling the fight four hours beforehand, giving him no chance to commit to the fresh terms.
But SunSport understands Paul’s team were informed hours before the public cancellation that Rahman could not make the weight.
And Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza – who was putting the PPV on his platform – added to this claim.
Espinoza tweeted: “He repeatedly assured us he would make 200. He signed a contract saying he’d make 200.

“And he sent us a video showing that he weighed 216 when he signed the contract a month before the fight. Shame on us for believing him.”
He added: “205 was max limit. Over 205 the fight was off, and he told us he couldn’t go lower than 215.”

But he remains linked with a comeback to fight either Joshua, 32, or Oleksandr Usyk, 35, who rematch on August 20 in Saudi Arabia.
Talk of an exhibition bout with Game of Thrones star and ex-world’s strongest man Hafthor Bjornsson, 33, has also surfaced.
And promoter Eddie Hearn even claimed Fury’s team reached out to Derek Chisora, 38, for a bizarre trilogy despite his 2011 and 2014 wins.
David Ghansa of 258 MGT told The Independent: “Tyson’s team have indeed reached out to us about a potential fight towards the end of the year.

Not only did Salah score on the opening weekend of the season for the sixth year running, he put himself in the history books.
The Egyptian now has as many goals on on the first weekend of the new campaign as Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer.
Salah, who signed a new three-year this summer, was on the scoresheet with new strike partner Darwin Nunez.
But Aleksandar Mitrovic’s double in between threatened to give Fulham a shock win.

Klopp said on BT Sport: “The best thing about the game is the result, that we get a point from a really bad game from my side.
“The attitude was not right in the beginning, we wanted to fight back but we don’t find it as easy any more.

Asked what he told his players at the break, Klopp replied: “You can’t always hug the boys.”
He added: “We do that usually when they deserve it and the first half – it’s not that they didn’t but when you start a game the opposite of how we want to start it’s difficult.
“Everybody was under pressure, we couldn’t really break the lines.
“We never had momentum, we could have won the game as we had the bigger chances but that would have been too much.”

Both sides have accused each other of being at fault, but in Rahman’s latest swipe he has released unseen sparring footage.

Liverpool will be even BETTER this season with Darwin Nunez replacing Sadio Mane, warns Pepe Reina after £85m transfer

PEPE REINA claims that £85million new boy Darwin Nunez will more than just fill Sadio Mane’s gigantic boots at Liverpool. The Senegal talisman departed Anfield for Bayern Munich after six years of outstanding service in which he contributed a frightening 168 goals and won every single major trophy at stake.

And Jurgen Klopp acted swiftly to bring in the refined Uruguayan finisher who caught his eye in last season’s Champions League quarter-final showdowns against Benfica.
He is now confronted with the vertiginous task of replacing his free-scoring predecessor though.
But for Reina, who defended Liverpool’s goal 394 times during an eight-year spell, Liverpool have actually become BETTER due to Darwin’s towering presence which offers a never seen dimension to their vibrant attack.
He told SunSport: “Darwin and Mane are two great players of a certain stature.

Reina was pushed out the door in summer 2013 to make way for incoming Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with Brendan Rodgers keen to revamp an ageing side that had languished for years in the doldrums.
But the 39-year-old Villarreal veteran goalkeeper insisted that he has moved on.
That departure, however painful at the time, paved the way for transfers to European super clubs Napoli, Bayern Munich and AC Milan.
Reina said: “I have no regrets because for eight years I was the club’s number one goalkeeper, playing nearly 400 games. I can’t moan about anything.
“In the end it had to happen and we went our separate ways. All things considered, things didn’t go too badly for me since then.
“So, with hindsight, at the time it was the right call.”
Liverpool have a great variety of players but they needed someone who can hold up the ball and play one-two passes. And thanks to Darwin they are perfect in attackPepe Reina
Reina has observed Liverpool’s staggering rise from afar in recent years.
And far from begrudging the club’s success, he heaped praise on the stunning transformation it has undergone.
He said: “Liverpool are a healthy club and a benchmark worldwide.
“The team, the players, the technical staff and the whole environment exude positivity.
“The Premier League is a beautiful league and Liverpool are an incredible side.”
Completing a clean sweep of trophies after coming within a whisker of doing so last term is not beyond Liverpool.
But contesting the domestic trophies and European glory with Pep Guardiola’s Man City as their closest antagonists remains a tall order.
Pepe Reina pictured with former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez
He admitted: “Liverpool can win the Quadruple. But in Man City they have a huge rival, they are really good.
“And it will again be a great race for the league title between Liverpool and Manchester City. I think no one else will fight for the title.
“As for Arsenal, it would already be good for them if they qualify for the Champions League.”
Reina was named Liverpool’s Player of the Year in 2010 and notched three Premier League Golden Gloves.
Liverpool have had three number ones since he left to reunite with former Kop boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli nine years ago.
But it was only after two failed experiments with Mignolet and Loris Karius that the club finally managed to fill the Spaniard’s void in 2017.
And Reina feels that Alisson belongs to the pantheon of goalkeeping greats as he ticks all the boxes.
