Arne Slot makes embarrassing blunder in Liverpool press conference as he ‘forgets Cristiano Ronaldo played for Man Utd’

LIVERPOOL manager Arne Slot has FORGOTTEN that Cristiano Ronaldo starred for Manchester United. The Dutch coach was asked to compare 30-goal striker Mo Salah with world superstars Lionel Messi and Ronaldo.Liverpool manager Arne Slot forgot that Cristiano Ronaldo starred for Manchester UnitedRonaldo played more than 300 games for United, winning the Ballon d’Or with the club in 2008Mo Salah is enjoying one of the greatest individual Premier League seasons everAnd it had slipped the mind of Slot that the Portuguese international – now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia – spent a total of seven seasons in two spells at United.Slot said: “It’s so difficult to compare players with each other, and it’s not fair to anyone. I think Mo has his own career and Mo has been outstanding.“Messi and Ronaldo both didn’t play in the Premier League, but I don’t want to bring them down because these two players are incredible, but that makes the comparison maybe even more difficult.“So Mo has had some outstanding seasons here at Liverpool, and we hope he can continue this for a longer period of time, but to do that he first has to extend his contract, of course.”READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWSSalah, who faces Newcastle tomorrow for the Premier League leaders, has been outstanding for the Reds this season. And Slot believes Salah could win the Ballon d’Or without winning the Champions League.Manchester City midfielder Rodri achieved that last season even though him winning the award infuriated Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior.Slot added: “It’s mostly about the attackers, isn’t it? Although the last winner was a midfielder. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS“But yes, it’s a good thing that Mo is in the discussion, because it means he does well and it means we are doing well.“I think in general, someone that wins the Ballon d’Or needs to win something as well, so it’s a great challenge that is in front of us, but also in front of him. Fans plead with Pep Guardiola as they spot secret Mo Salah charm offensive after Liverpool loss “And what I liked a lot is that he takes this challenge not only by scoring a big goal and a great assist against City, but he also wanted the team to win.“Because his defensive work rate, especially in the second half, was outstanding, and that is what it takes for us to have a chance of winning something. “And if we as a team can win something, he will have a far better chance to win an individual prize like the Ballon d’Or.”Ronaldo played in 346 games across two spells for Man Utd and won his first of five Ballon d’Or’s when playing for the club in 2008.The Portuguese superstar won eight trophies during his first five year stint, including three consecutive Prem titles and the Champions League in 2008.Salah has now racked up an incredible 51 combined goals and assists this season across all competitions. He has now reached 25 goals and 16 assists in the Premier League alone – with 11 top-flight games still to go.READ MORE SUN STORIESSalah has now scored AND assisted in 11 different Premier League games this season. That’s the most since a certain Messi achieved the same feat for Barcelona in 2014/15.The Liverpool superstar notched another goal and assist as the Reds beat Man City More

Inside football’s greatest cup competition where upsets are encouraged with minnows set to take on £3.5bn giants

EVERY year debates rage over whether the FA Cup can ever regain its “magic”.But over in France, their domestic competition is going from strength-to-strength.Stade Briochin produced a sensational upset in the last roundCredit: AFPThe lower-league side are set to take on PSGCredit: AFPUpon first inspection, you might wonder what the big deal is: after all, Paris Saint-Germain have won it 15 times, Marseille on 10 occasions. But look a little closer, and you’ll see a competition that consistently delivers drama, upsets and “magic”, every single season. This season’s quarter-finals feature just four teams from Ligue 1, with some of the top-flight’s biggest clubs having been humbled along the way.And with fourth-tier Cannes hosting Ligue 2 Guingamp, at least one team from outside the top flight is guaranteed to reach the semi-finals.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLLyon were astonishingly beaten on penalties by fifth-tier Bourgoin-Jallieu, who hail from a town of just 28,000 people barely 20 miles away. And the minnows very nearly backed up their incredible win, only falling to top-flight Reims on penalties in the last round.Lille, who have defeated Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus on the way to the Champions League round of 16, were also defeated via spot kicks by second-tier Dunkerque – despite stars such as Jonathan David being in action.Montpellier, Ligue 1 champions in 2012, finished their Coupe de France campaign in disgrace this season. Most read in FootballJOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUSAlready bottom of the table, they received no respite in the Coupe as they were astonishingly trounced 4-0 by fourth-tier Le Puy Foot 43 Auvergne.During the match, experienced captain Teji Savanier was asked “Last in Ligue 1 – does that hurt?” – to which he brashly replied: “When you’re being paid €210,000 (£175k) a month, no.”Inside PSG’s £250m lavish new training complex with luxury pools as fans joke ‘players will spend half the time lost’Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Nice, meanwhile, were beaten 2-1 by fourth-tier Stade Briochin courtesy of Hugo Boudin’s late double.Their reward? The opportunity to face Ligue 1 champions PSG in the quarter-finals.Such has been the interest in the fixture, set to take place tomorrow, that the match has been moved from Stade Briochin’s charming Stade Fred-Aubert home to Rennes’ Roazhon Park.Luis Enrique’s star-studded side will of course be huge favourites, but their lowly opponents will relish the opportunity to test themselves against one of Europe’s most in-form teams.Part of what sets the Coupe de France apart is its format.Ditching two-legged ties in 1999, the competition now automatically makes the underdog in each game the home side, provided that they are two divisions or more below their opponents.Third-tier US Quevilly subsequently reached the final in 2012, while Les Herbiers from the same level finished as runners-up in 2018.Coupe de France fixturesQuarter-FinalsAngers vs ReimsCannes vs GuingampBrest vs DunkerqueStade Briochin vs Paris Saint-GermainIn 2020, the Coupe de France also scrapped extra time, meaning underdogs just have to last 90 minutes before reaching the lottery of penalties. With the Coupe de la Ligue having also been axed that year, the competition also has maximum prestige as France’s only domestic tournament.Another fun wrinkle of the competition is that it allows clubs from semi-autonomous French regions around the world to participate.Earlier this season, AS Venus made the 30-hour trip from Tahiti to face fourth-tier ASM Belfort in round seven. While last season, Golden Lion made the 8,000 mile round trip from Martinique to face the stars of Lille, although the ruthless Ligue 1 side played their full-strength side and won 12-0.It may well be that PSG go on to beat Stade Briochin before marching to a 16th Coupe de France triumph.READ MORE SUN STORIESBut that wouldn’t change the fact that this season’s competition has been full of shocks, upsets and incredible stories. And perhaps it still has another fairytale or two left to tell. The stars of PSG will be in action against Stade-BriochinCredit: GettyLille took on Golden Lion last seasonCredit: AFP More

I watched Gerald McClellan fight for his life after horror KO – 30 years on it still makes me feel sick to my stomach

IT IS 30 years ago to the day that Nigel Benn, with an almost medieval ferocity, battered American Gerald McClellan to retain his WBC world super-middleweight title.Normally after such a blood-chilling, super-human display of guts and raw courage – when Benn had tigerishly fought back after twice being on the brink of defeat – there would have been an outpouring of elation.Nigel Benn’s brutal win over Gerald McClellan is 30 years old.. but still makes Colin Hart feel sickCredit: GettyBenn’s flurry of punches left McClellan counted out in the tenth roundCredit: PABut let me make it perfectly clear: the tragic events following the Dark Destroyer’s infamous 10-round KO victory – and there are still repercussions to this day – ensured there was certainly no cause for celebration.A 12,000 sell-out London Arena and a further 13million viewers tuning-in live on ITV watched horrified as McClellan was transformed from a superbly fit athlete to a shell of a man lying unconscious on the canvas as three doctors and an anaesthetist fought desperately to save his life.Recalling those scenes from three decades ago leaves me with the same sick feeling in the pit of my stomach as it did then.In my SunSport fight report, I said there had never been a more brutal battle in Britain – and thankfully there has never been another like it since. We watched, hearts in our mouths, as the medics spent 15 minutes going about their work.McClellan was given an injection to relax him, put in a head-brace and had a oxygen mask strapped to his face. He was stretchered out of the ring and rushed to the nearby Royal London Hospital. There, waiting to operate, was neurosurgeon John Sutcliffe, who removed a blood clot from his brain. After surgery, McClellan lay in a coma for two weeks before being flown back to his home in Freeport, Illinois, where he has been cared for by his sister Lisa ever since. His devastating brain injuries have left him blind, almost completely deaf and confined to a wheelchair.Ironically, Benn was taken to the same hospital and placed in the same ward as McClellan suffering from extreme exhaustion, a fractured nose, fractured jaw and passing blood in his urine due to kidney damage.McClellan took too much of a battering and failed to get off his knees in the tenth roundCredit: GettyMcClellan was taken out of the arena on a stretcher after suffering life-changing injuriesCredit: PAMcLellan was left in a coma and blind, while also mostly deaf, following the fightColin Hart’s fight report from the dramatic fightCredit: The SunWe were told that Nigel went over to his comatose opponent kissed him on the cheek and said “sorry”.In hindsight the omens weren’t good for this meeting between – pound-for-pound – two of the most devastating punchers of their era. They just didn’t like each other. If ever there was an Ugly American it was McClellan who arrived on these shores with a reputation for being as mean and nasty outside the ring as he was inside. The great Manny Steward, who trained dozens of world champions including Tommy ‘Hit Man’ Hearns and Lennox Lewis made no bones about it when he said: “Out of all the fighters I have trained, Gerald probably had the biggest mean streak of them all.”McClellan, having won all but two of his 31 fights by KO, prophetically said two months before he met Benn: “You have to go to war. You have to be prepared to die. That’s what boxing is.”And his cornerman, Stan Johnson, put in his two pennyworth by declaring: “Gerald didn’t want to win the fight. He actually wanted to kill Nigel Benn.”McClellan had to be respected as a formidable world-class fighting machine, but for me he was an extremely flawed human being. His hobby was breeding fighting pit bulls. How can anyone possibly warm to anyone who admits to tying up the muzzle of a Labrador and throwing it into the jaws of his prize pit bull and watch it being torn to pieces?Because of his violent reputation, McClellan was a 1-3 favourite going into the fight that was choc-full of drama and controversy from the the start.Just 35 seconds after the opening bell, McClellan trapped Benn against the ropes and – with both fists crashing against his skull – forced him out of the ring onto the apron.Recalling the moment, Nigel said “I didn’t know a man could hit that hard.”Nigel Benn was sent flying out of the ring in the first round, such was McClellan’s powerCredit: GettyThe pair fought until the tenth round in a savage war of attritionCredit: Allsport – GettyBenn managed to scramble back with the count on nine, but it seemed impossible for him to survive.Yet he tore into McClellan with both hands and it was obvious we were about to witness a sensational non-stop battle of attrition. From then on, the action ebbed and flowed with a violence that was frightening in its intensity. In the eighth, a desperately-tired Benn was floored by a tremendous McClellan right.Nigel got up to take the mandatory eight count and, as he stood in a neutral corner swaying like a sapling in the wind, his face grotesquely swollen, he looked more like the Dark Destroyed than Dark Destroyer. He seemed to have little chance of pulling through.Yet somehow, from somewhere, he managed to dredge up a few more ounces of strength and willpower and once again launched himself at his tormentor. He shook McClellan with a right to the chin and that was the moment the American looked fearful and started to crumble – perhaps realising he was faced with an unstoppable, unrelenting force. Two rounds later, another Benn onslaught sent McClellan to his knees. Managing to haul himself upright he was met by a short right uppercut. This time – fully conscious – he stayed down on one knee as French referee Alfred Azaro, counted him out.McClellan eventually sank to his knees and failed to get back up after Benn’s barrageCredit: News Group Newspapers LtdThe pair have since been reunited after McClellan’s life-altering injuriesCredit: News Group Newspapers LtdBenn also ended up in hospital but avoided any serious, long-term injuriesCredit: News Group Newspapers LtdI’m ashamed to say I was guilty of thinking McClellan had committed boxing’s cardinal sin and had decided he’d taken enough punishment and quit.At that moment – before the stark reality set in – the crowd had worked themselves into a frenzy of excitement at having seen Benn’s unbelievable courage prevail against the odds. There have been many theories that McClellan – who showed signs of distress after being accidentally head-butted in the ninth – could have finished beaten but unscathed if the rookie referee, in charge of only his second world title fight, or Johnson had read the signs correctly and pulled him out.We will never know. There’s no doubt that Benn, 61 – four years older than McClellan and now living in Sydney – was so traumatised it changed his life completely and led him to become a born-again Christian and preacher.Several years later, Nigel said: “Sure I wanted to win – but not at that price. On that night my heart went out of boxing. “Let me tell you something – inflicting that kind of damage does something to you.”Benn was back at the London Arena five months later, knocking out Italian Vincenzo Nardiello – but he was never the same fighter again and he retired after losing what would be his final three fights. For a time there was bad blood between Benn and the McClellan family – Lisa felt Nigel hadn’t shown enough remorse or compassion for her brother. But, in 2007, the rift was healed when Benn helped organise a star-studded charity evening at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, that raised £200,000 for McClellan. That money has helped to make Gerald’s life as comfortable as it can possibly be.However, I suggest no amount of cash is any sort of consolation for a young man in his prime having his future shattered in under half an hour.Benn showed off a cut cheek as he suffered a fractured nose, fractured jaw and kidney damageCredit: News Group Newspapers LtdMcClellan was in clear distress as Benn unleashed a flurry of blowsCredit: PA More

Just not in the way most expected.Arsenal’s latest crumbling saw Liverpool re-extend their lead at the top to 11 points, having played a game more than the Gunners. And in truth they were very comfortable in the 2-0 win at the Etihad, with yet another Mo Salah goal and assist for good measure. The Reds have 11 games left, with crucially SEVEN of those to come at home. That starts with the visit of Newcastle in midweek, buoyed by their win over fellow top four contenders Nottingham Forest on Sunday. The Toon trailed early before a stunning four goals in 11 minutes had them in control before the break. Forest rallied with two late goals but it was still a huge win for Eddie Howe’s side. With the cup final against the Reds to come in a few weeks, this is a chance to stamp their authority and continue their push for Champions League football.First scorer and correct score predictionsCorrect score: 2-1 at 7/1 with Betfred – HEREFirst scorer: Mo Salah 12/5 with talkSPORT BET – HERELiverpool vs Newcastle latest oddsOdds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change. How to claim..William Hill £60 welcome bonusVisit the William Hill website HERE*Register an account using the Promo Code: T60Once your account is registered, click ‘opt in’ on the ‘Vegas Promotion’ pageDeposit a minimum of £10 in your main account to receive a £20 Vegas Bonus for use on Selected GamesThen place a bet with a minimum stake of £10 at odds of 1/2 or greater on any football marketOnce that’s settled, your account will be credited with £40 in free betsWilliam Hill: Claim £60 welcome bonus – click here*Liverpool vs Newcastle predictions and tipsBack and readyCody Gakpo returned for the closing stages on Sunday after missing the last couple of games with injury. With four goals and an assist in the five games prior to injury, he’s turned into a huge player for Arne Slot’s side, allowing Luis Diaz to operate through the middle too.Can come in from the start here and no surprise to see him pick up where he left off, given he’s two goals in four appearances against Newcastle.Cody Gakpo to score at 17/10 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE Goals aplentyIncredibly, there have been TWELVE first half goals in Newcastle’s last three games. An astonishing number and that could continue at Anfield where Liverpool will hope to start quickly.Seven 1st half goals in Liverpool’s last three too.
