Southampton 0 Brentford 5: Abysmal Saints destined for the drop with Ivan Juric’s side ten points adrift of safety

They do not have a cat in hell chance of beating the drop. Two second-half goals – one from the spot – from Bryan Mbeumo as well as strikes from Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa added to Kevin Schade’s first-half opener bagged Brentford their first Prem win on the road this season. And had it not been for some wasteful finishing from Wissa and Lewis-Potter, a fine Aaron Ramsdale save and the crossbar this would have been more embarrassing.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLSouthampton are 10 points adrift of safety and that gap could expand further if Ipswich win at Fulham today or if Wolves get any kind of result at home to Nottingham Forest tomorrow.Juric said: “It was a bad day. Man City 4 West Ham 1: Haaland back in the groove with two goals in thrashing to increase pressure on Lopetegui

NORMAL service still far from resumed…but a City stroll and Erling Haaland through the 20-goal barrier again will certainly do for now.And after the two months of hell Pep Guardiola’s four-time champions endured before the Festive period, that is a more than acceptable start to the New Year.Manchester City comfortably beat West Ham at the Etihad StadiumCredit: GettySavinho forced in the opener with his deflected crossCredit: ReutersErling Haaland hit a brace for the hostsCredit: PAPhil Foden put the match beyond West Ham in the second halfCredit: AFPAdmittedly nowhere near the five-star, blow-everyone-away team we have come to expect just yet. But a pretty decent start to 2025, nonetheless. Two goals from an increasingly back-in-the-groove Haaland – that’s 21 now in a supposedly dodgy campaign – and two more assists from increasingly vital Savinho. You can probably make that three, in fact, given the fact it was the Brazilian’s would-be cross which Vladimir Coufal turned into his own net for the opener, actually.Certainly, though, a growing sense that City – slowly, steadily but surely – are edging in the right direction once more with almost half the season to go.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLEven though there are, in fairness, few bigger football certainties than a home win over the Hammers – in all bar one of the past 15 meetings here, in fact.So no great surprise to see another notch on the bedpost after the latest clash either…even though the visitors did have some cause to feel aggrieved as they headed back south. Not so much for blowing a couple of chances, but more the clanger that denied Crys Summerville a run on goal after Manuel Akanji had the ball nicked off his toe.Still nearly half the length of the field to go admittedly, but no covering defender in sight as the striker set off. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSYet instead of letting the move pan out, then leaving VAR Graham Scott to make the call, ref Michael Salisbury blew. And considering no amount of television replays could deliver a unanimous verdict, there was every reason for manager Julen Lopetegui’s touchline tantrum.Ludek Miklosko gets emotional as he addresses West Ham fans at 2023 Conference League finalNiclas Fullkrug got one back for West HamCredit: ReutersPep Guardiola will be happy to see his team win back-to-backCredit: GettyThe defeat has heaped more pressure on Hammers manager Julen LopeteguiCredit: GettyBy then the Spaniard’s side were already chasing the game – thanks to a City opener that was more down to fortune than flair.Savinho certainly wasn’t planning to shoot as he cut in from the left, trying instead to pick out Haaland in the middle.Yet when Vladimir Coufal raced over to block, the ball clipped off his outstretched leg, flew over stranded keeper Alphonse Areola and into the far corner.City will no doubt claim they were due a bit of good luck, given they had precious of it during that shocking run before beating Leicester a week ago.But even after getting their noses in front, Guardiola’s men didn’t exactly play like the serial title winners they are – well not for another half hour at least.Indeed, there was good cause to argue a one-goal advantage at the break would have been flattering. Doubling it three minutes beforehand certainly was. That came courtesy of Haaland’s opener, and few of the previous 19 he had notched in all competitions this term were easier.Once again Savinho was at the heart of it, with a sweeping, searching, sensational cross beyond the far post – which the striking Viking rose unopposed for a point-blank nod-in.Cruel on the Hammers, for sure. But effectively a game-clincher for City, because you could all but see the wind – and hope – drain from the visitors at that second. And so, indeed, it proved. Although that was little excuse for some of the kamikaze defending that allowed City to add another two in three manic minutes after the break. Not so much with the first of them, admittedly…that was more down to Savinho being, well, savvy in spotting Haaland’s run behind Max Kilman and a slide-rule assist. It came with the most delightful of dinks over Areola – and as far as a contest, that really was that.A second successive win for the first time since October – what an incredible statistic that is for the champions – signed and sealed with over half an hour still to play. And with the shackles off, the pressure released and the chance to cut loose, Pep’s prize guys wasted no time in bagging a fourth.Although strictly speaking West Ham played as big a part in the assist as Kevin De Bruyne’s final ball, with a blueprint in cut-your-own-throat defending. That was all you could call Kudus’ pass to Edson Alvarez – a simple ten yard ball – which went behind his team-mate and sent De Bruyne away. The Belgian could probably have done the business himself some 12 yards from goal. Instead he rolled it to Phil Foden on his right and he certainly did.At least Niclas Fullkrug finally gave the Hammers some reward for their efforts when he stuck out a leg for the neat finish Tomas Soucek’s delivery deserved.READ MORE SUN STORIESBut in the land of small mercies, it was very much the smallest crumb of comfort for Lopetegui, back in the firing line once more after last week’s five-goal hiding off Liverpool. For Guardiola, though, there is certainly a chink of sunlight peeping through those dark clouds at last… More

Crystal Palace 1 Chelsea 1: Blues’ faltering Premier League title fight dealt another blow after late Mateta equaliser

A NEW YEAR but still the same frustrating Chelsea who could not wait to say goodbye to 2024.The past two weeks has seen them transformed from title-chasers to now up against it trying to stay in the Premier League’s top four.Cole Palmer’s cool first-half finish looked to be enough to earn Chelsea three pointsCredit: GettyThat was until Jean-Philippe Mateta struck late on to ensure the spoils were sharedCredit: GettyEnzo Maresca was eight minutes away seeing his rejigged side clinch a hard-fought victory that would have meant the Christmas period was not a total disaster.Instead they cracked late in the second half and paid the price for failing to finish off multiple chances to grab their first win in four games.Boss Maresca always talked down his chances of chasing down Liverpool during his debut season at Stamford Bridge. That would have been a stretch. But those above his head have set a high bar for their club to be playing Champions League football regularly.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLChelsea remain fourth but are now only a point above Newcastle who piled the pressure on them in the early game by winning at Tottenham. The Italian’s team responded to the threat by taking the lead through Cole Palmer inside a quarter of an hour only to let it slip in the dying moments and allow powerhouse Jean-Philippe Mateta to equalise in the 82nd.It’s the new year but Chelsea look far from resolute and Maresca can see the weaknesses that are holding his team back. Jadon Sancho was restored to the starting line up as one of six changes imposed by the determined coach as he looked to plot a way out of Chelsea’s mini slump. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSRecent defeats against Fulham and Ipswich have dented confidence in the camp. Combined with injuries to key defenders, the head coach rejigged his team to give it a fresher look.Maresca drafted in teenager Josh Acheampong for his first Premier League start – playing alongside Levi Colwill in a young partnership at centre back.Enzo Maresca’s brutal warning to Chelsea stars after Madueke dropped for Fulham defeat and summer signing axed entirely Acheampong, 18, is highly regarded at Stamford Bridge but a tough away game when the chips are down would not be the ideal circumstances to hand a young kid such an honour. Such is life at Chelsea right now.But winger Sancho settled the nerves for the visitors when he produced a piece of trickery to help get Chelsea off the mark.Collecting a low pass from Colwill, he sold Chris Richards a huge dummy and rounded the Palace defender to set himself free down the left flank in the 14th minute.Having bought time and space for his run, he then picked out Palmer inside the box, who in turn poked the ball home across the face of goal to claim his 13th Premier League goal of the season. It was a class move by Chelsea and equally unfortunate for Richards. The American had moments earlier produced a classy tackle to block the goalbound run of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson who was clean through. It was the sort of last-ditch but well-timed lunge with the back of his heel that underlines how defending is an underrated art form. Not long after putting his team ahead, Palmer was just inches away from a neat cut back from Pedro Neto that would have made it 2-0 and made the visitors a lot more comfortable.Josh Acheampong, 18, was handed a Premier League full debut by Enzo Maresca and impressedCredit: GettyInstead, Palace refused to buckle and Mateta went close with a shot that was touched just wide of the post by a Chelsea boot.He was also just too late to latch onto Ismaila Sarr’s header down into the box that left the goal gaping. For as well as in defence, Chelsea are showing signs of weakness in goal with neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen able to convince their manager to give them a regular run between the sticks.Sanchez is a clanger waiting to happen and duly obliged with a goal kick that barely cleared the grass tops and fell straight to Cheick Doucoure in the centre circle.Luckily the move failed to lead anywhere but it shows how Maresca’s view that his team is not ready for a sustained challenge at the top of the table yet is spot on. Chelsea’s erratic keeper then redeemed himself by tipping over a Richards header in the 56th minute.Jackson missed the target in the second half. Going so close as to bite his fingers in frustration at his narrow miss. And with Palace turning the screw, they nicked a late point when Sarr threaded a through ball to Eberechi Eze, who in turn squared for the advancing Mateta.READ MORE SUN STORIESPalace’s lead man rammed home a shot to show Chelsea how to be clinical when the pressure is on.Fifth place in the Premier League could well be enough to clinch Champions League football next season and right now that might well be a relief to Maresca. Tottenham 1 Newcastle 2: Gordon scores in front of England boss Tuchel as Toon fight from goal down at crisis club Spurs

THOMAS TUCHEL barely had time to take his seat here before his England hopefuls quickly showed just how much talent he has at his disposal.Dominic Solanke gave Spurs the lead within four minutes sixth goal involvement in the last five games.Newcastle have won all five of those to motor up the league and put them in sight of the Champions League spots. While injury-hit Spurs, who were hours later, though Postecoglou on Friday said he had no issue with that, having given his tired team two days off.A sickness bug then hit Postecoglou’s team in the week, to the point where goalkeeper Fraser Forster – another player eligible for England – missed this game altogether. It meant Brandon Austin was handed his first-ever Spurs appearance, despite being at the club for nearly ten years and turning 26 next week. His last senior appearance came a whopping four years ago while on loan in the MLS at Orlando City.Livramento’s game looked like it might have been over inside the first minute after colliding into Lucas Bergvall, but he eventually picked himself up and carried on.Spurs were in need of a fast start and they got one thanks to Solanke expertly finishing off a brilliant move.Bergvall, the 18-year-old Swede starting ahead of Yves Bissouma, drove the ball forward and gave it to Brennan Johnson, who cut it back for Pedro Porro to swing in a cross.Solanke managed to hold off Sven Botman – starting his first game in nine months after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury – and headed into the far corner. The lead lasted all of two minutes though and, such has been Spurs’ season of late, it came in desperately unlucky circumstances for the hosts. They were breaking up the pitch when a Bergvall pass struck Joelinton’s hand, diverting the ball back towards their 18-yard box, allowing Bruno Guimaraes to tee up Gordon who slotted into the corner.Spurs protested but VAR agreed with on-pitch referee Andrew Madley that Joelinton’s hand was not in an unnatural position when the ball struck it.Which, as tough as it was on Spurs, was probably right by the letter of the law.Postecoglou was left incensed anyway – as were the Spurs fans when the already-booked Burn did not receive a second caution for what they felt was a deliberate handball midway through the half.Isak has been the man of the moment of the festive period with eight goals in his last seven before this game.He surprisingly let Spurs off the hook on 32 minutes when firing Murphy’s cutback just wide. But lightning does not strike twice, particularly for Postecoglou’s team right now, and six minutes later the super Swede diverted in a Murphy cross which had hit Radu Dragusin along the way.Amazingly, Spurs’ selection problems worsened as Dragusin was forced off at half-time, meaning Postecoglou was now without all FOUR of his centre-backs.Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies were already out injured and not expected back until the end of the month. It saw Sergio Reguilon come on and Djed Spence, presumably because he was a bit taller than the other full-backs, pushed into the middle of defence. The results may be dismal of late for Postecoglou but his players still appear to be giving their all for him on the pitch – and that was the same in the second half here. His knackered side pushed for a leveller, with Brennan Jonson striking the post and Maddison, who came on in the 63rd minute, whipping narrowly past the post after a short corner.Even Reguilon looked like he might score after an attacking frenzy from Spurs but the Spaniard’s wild shot ended up going out for a throw.Solanke had a brilliant chance to win it in ten minutes of stoppage time, but planted his header from Porro’s cross straight at Martin Dubravka. That did not take away from a superb individual display from Spurs’ centre-forward, giving Tuchel plenty to think about as he hot-footed it down to the South Coast to take in Brighton vs Inside Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd axe as it’s revealed November night out led to Ruben Amorim dropping star

THE explanation behind Marcus Rashford’s shock Manchester United axe has been revealed.Rashford, 27, scored three in Ruben Amorim’s first two Premier League games in charge.Marcus Rashford has been exiled by Ruben AmorimCredit: GettyHe has not featured in Manchester United’s last four Prem matchesCredit: PAHe grabbed the opener two minutes in against Ipswich before helping himself to a double as United thrashed Everton 4-0.But then Amorim dumped Rashford out of the starting XI for the defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. And he has not featured in the Premier League since.Rashford was left out of matchday squads entirely against Manchester City, Bournemouth and Wolves – plus the Carabao Cup exit at Tottenham – then returned as an unused sub against Newcastle on December 30.READ MORE ON MAN UTDTellingly, Amorim refused to bring the forward on despite United trailing 2-0 from the 19th minute. It means the academy graduate’s only start since December 1 was away at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League and he has played 118 minutes of football from a possible 720 under Amorim. And his prolonged absence looks set to extend with Rashford missing training due to illness ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Anfield. Now there is talk of a possible transfer exit away from Old Trafford, especially after Rashford admitted he was open to a “new challenge”.Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSBut according to The Athletic, there is a specific reason behind Amorim’s sudden change of tune.It is claimed in the aftermath of the win over Everton, Amorim was told Rashford had been on a night out in Manchester on Friday, November 29 – less than 48 hours before the Toffees clash on Sunday, December 1.Former Man Utd star slams Rashford and says he should move to MLS The new manager has a strict rule on players not going out to bars so close to matches. When he spoke to Rashford about the matter, the £325,000-a-week star reportedly denied the suggestions and told his gaffer he had been misinformed.Nonetheless, Amorim dropped Rashford. Then two weeks later, Rashford was said to be slacking in United’s final training session before the Manchester derby on December 15 – with again claims he had been out on the Friday before a Sunday match.Again, Rashford’s representatives strenuously rebuffed the reports and there is a feeling within his camp that the England man and local hero gets extra scrutiny on his social life than team-mates.A year ago, Rashford phoned in sick for training on a Friday – two days before facing Newport in the FA Cup – and it transpired he had been on a bender in Belfast. On the Monday after the cup clash, for which Rashford was axed, Sir Dave Brailsford addressed the United squad in a pre-arranged meeting – but then spoke privately with Rashford for 90 minutes. Why Rashford joining Arsenal is perfect fitBy Martin LiptonMARCUS RASHFORD is at a crossroads. But now the England star has to make the biggest choice he has ever faced – does he care about cash, or about his career?Rashford’s shock admission that he is “ready for a new challenge” after some two decades under the Manchester United umbrella has altered the dynamic around his future. That Rashford might not fit the blueprint of Ruben Amorim – who has now responded to Rashford’s comments – was not exactly a surprise. The Portuguese coach prefers a 3-4-3 formation but appears to have settled on Rasmus Hojlund as his starting central striker and wants two “narrow” inside forwards, with the width coming from the wing-backs.Rashford has always wanted to play through the middle but is often at his best exploiting spaces out wide – and that skillset does not necessarily suit the way Amorim wants to play.Even so, going public with his evident dissatisfaction at being bombed entirely from the squad for the Manchester derby was a major move, even if he vowed there would be “no hard feelings” if he does leave his boyhood club.In truth, Rashford has been leaving United almost from the moment he signed that new £325,000 per week contract in 2023.Something was broken in his connection to the club. His form dropped, his threat dissipated, his issues with the hierarchy deepened. When Erik ten Hag dropped him for hosting a birthday party after a derby defeat, and he later pulled a sickie to miss the FA Cup game with Newport, it felt even then that the writing was on the wall. The facts suggest the love affair has ended. After scoring 30 in all competitions to earn that new deal, he has scored just 15 in the 18 months since it was signed.Amorim’s arrival seems merely to have accelerated what was increasingly inevitable. Now, though, it is up to Rashford to determine what his future will bring. If it is only about the money, then his options might be somewhat limited. It is hard to see a Prem rival coughing up the same £16.9m annual salary – although Rashford’s comments have probably knocked £20m-plus off any transfer fee, even next month. But Real Madrid have their fill of big-money strikers and Barcelona’s budget remains restricted by La Liga financial controls. In Europe, then, that probably leaves PSG – but a move to a one-club league.Or, in the wider world, he could follow the likes of Ivan Toney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roberto Firmino and Co and head to the Saudi desert.Lucrative, yep. Certainly a different environment – and that may be exactly what Rashford both wants and needs. But the football? Not in a million years. What Rashford needs, above all, is to be able to play for trophies and showcase his talents. There is no better stage than the Premier League – which has far more global eyeballs on it than any other domestic competition. And in that Premier League there is one club crying out for a goalscoring No 9, especially if he can also play down the left channel to balance out the side and widen its threat.Rashford has always been more Longsight than London.Yet Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta, might be the perfect fit.The Gunners’ lack of a proper scorer is one of the major factors many fans feel has hurt their title challenge this year.Gabriel Jesus has never been a natural finisher, while Kai Havertz is still a converted midfielder. And while the link-up between Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka makes their right flank deadly, faith in Gabriel Martinelli on the left is waning. There have not been too many who succeeded at Arsenal after leaving United – although Danny Welbeck was not a flop.Rashford has all the attributes to change that history, if he can reproduce what everybody knows is inside him.And by breaking free, giving himself the chance to start all over, Rashford can make a point to Amorim that will resonate for a very long time. The attacker also angered Erik ten Hag in December 2022 by oversleeping and arriving late to a team meeting, prompting him to be dropped to the bench. Then in November 2023, Ten Hag slammed Rashford’s decision to go out partying for his birthday after a 3-0 hammering by rivals City as “unacceptable”. The 2024-25 season started off badly for the 60-cap international with two of his best mates at the club, Jadon Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, both leaving. He has chipped in with four Prem goals and an assist and has improved his running stats – now averaging 10.2km and 21.33 sprints per 90 minutes of action. His Europa League goal and two in the Carabao Cup take his overall United tally to 138 – 15th on the all-time list and now just seven behind Cristiano Ronaldo in joint 13th. Whether he adds many to that list, though, remains to be seen.Only clubs in Saudi Arabia would realistically be able to match his mammoth wages – but he has turned down three bumper offers already. SunSport revealed a swap deal with Victor Osimhen of Napoli is being discussed after Juventus declined the option to strike a deal. The MLS remains another possible exit route should he fail to win over his new manager and regain his starting spot following his recent exile. Amorim’s current stance to sideline Rashford has been given the support of the boardroom hierarchy. The ex-Sporting chief, though, insists the ball is in the player’s court to get himself back into contention and reignite his United career – but only if he is willing to prove he is up for the challenge.Amorim said: “It depends more on him than me.READ MORE SUN STORIES”He has to want it really, really bad. “He’s here.
